Art and Design Technology at Park View School GCSE Art & Design The course is broad and research based. The specificaon emphasises the new subject criteria for Art. Art and Design Technology at Park View School GCSE Art & Design The course is broad and research based. The specification emphasises the new subject criteria for Art. Overview of the option

At Key Stage 4 pupils establish their own company and continue to build and develop their skills through this forum, adopting roles within the company to develop a realistic view of the world of commerce. Through engaging in product development pupils learn to explore new ideas, develop their creativity and explore imaginative solutions to problems. Pupils will develop mathematical skills in a real life context, calculating profit and loss of the company. They will develop communications, skills from working with suppliers and custom-ers.

Pupils will explore marketing and sales oppor-tunities inside and outside of school including-pop up shops and South Tyneside markets.

Overview of the option

Pupils will be provided with the opportunity to develop their cooking skills in a simulated work environment. Independence and team work skills will be promoted through the preparation and cooking of healthy wholesome food and self-esteem boosted through the satisfaction gained from the creation of a successful end product. Whilst developing knowledge of health and safety pupils will have the opportunity to develop their social skills and valuable life skills in preparation for life after school. These skills will be monitored in accordance with City & Guilds to provide National occupational standards in the above units.

Pupils will cover units from the 7 modules, which will include completing theory as well as practical cooking skills that will allow them to develop plan and cook meals over a period of time. Previous work has included researching and cooking meals for £5.00, learning how to cook a Christmas din-ner. Demonstrating clear health and safety rules used in a kitchen. Planning and undertaking a fundraising event.

Overview of the option

The course has been set up by TV Chef Jamie Oliver. The pro-gramme is set up to teach pupils how to cook great food that tastes amazing, saves money and, in the long run, will help them lead a happier, healthier life. Jamie Oliver believes that cooking is, without a doubt, one of the most important skills a person can ever learn and share. Once someone has that knowledge, that's it - they're set for life. Pupils will receive 3 hours a week, 2 hours practical and 1 hour written work. Pupils will learn to cook good quality food from scratch and learn new ways to get creative in the kitchen. Pupils will also develop knowledge of their ingredient selection, their functions as well as social and moral issues related to food and farming. Throughout the course, pupils will develop knowledge on food and nutrition and how it affects their health and life expectancy. Pupils will understand the issues and implications of poor diet choices. There will be a cost implication with this course of £1 per week to support with the purchasing of ingredients.

Overview of the option

IT User Skills gives pupils boarder access to the Information Tech-nology element of Computing. Using skills based around building websites, presentations, emails, discussing mobile IT devices and the internet pupils will work towards level 1 achieving an award or certificate. The qualifications aims to give pupils the IT user skills needed for full participation in employment and society and is perfect for pu-pils who may be using computers in their work, study, home or community. The qualifications recognise employers’ needs for ICT qualifica-tions that reflect real-world skills, and the challenges of work-place learning. Nine out of 10 new jobs require people with IT us-er skills. Operating a computer and being able to use the internet and a word processor are essential skills for work as well as for life. Pupils will design websites for mobile phone stores which include a number of pages, hyperlinks, animations, graphics and contact forms. Pupils designed all elements of the website from layout, formatting and images to developing the information on each page. Other units including using mobile IT devices involves pupils us-ing a range of devices, setting them up, accessing apps and devel-oping an understanding of using the devices securely.

Overview of the option

With assistance from adult Leaders, participants select and set objectives in each of the following areas: Volunteering: undertaking service to individuals or the community. We generally tie in with main school eg CiN, Red Nose Day and a chosen charity, this is currently the RNLI Physical: improving in an area of sport, dance or fitness activities. We generally complete this sec-tion with walks. Skills: developing practical and social skills and personal interests. The group will decide this. We have in the past used sailing on James Cook, Cy-cling / Mountain Biking etc

Expedition: planning, training for, and completion of an adventurous journey in the UK or abroad. One practice and one real expedition will be un-dertaken.

Overview of the option

Through our working partnership with Simonside Outdoor Adventure, we have successfully had groups attending each term and participating in various activities. In addition to the units above, we also offer the chance of learning basic First Aid and the British Heart Founda-tion Heartstart award. Also on offer is the chance to go Mountain Biking and learn Orienteering. All activities are life changing chances for young people. Aside from the formal qualifications, pupils devel-op social skills, communication skills, a better understanding of other pupil’s strengths and weaknesses. Add to that a sense of physical achieve-ment and interaction with new staff and oth-er pupils they may not normally form a partnership with.

Each of the units is designed to get students to use differ-ent learning skills and styles to explore and research many issues that can affect them in life after school. The units can be very physical (leisure time, healthy liv-ing) and some can be very educational (managing money) While some are a combination of the two. A lot of the learning will be student lead.

Overview of the option

Students must have a keen interest in music as sessions will include singing and learning a variety of instruments such as keyboard, drum kit, tin whistles and samba drums. It is help-ful if they have taken part in a showcase assembly in the past with their class, choir or after school club. They should be open minded to learning to read tradition notation and other forms of written music. They must be prepared to develop team-work, listening, performing and evaluating skills. The course includes teaching students how to set up and pack down equipment to become independent in these skills. They learn to be responsible for organising a concert, and re-hearsing and refining a “set” of songs. Students must be prepared to perform to an audience as this is part of the coursework criteria. An audience may be a class, a group of friends or a larger showcase assembly audi-ence. This can be discussed within the student and the group.

Overview of the option

The qualifications in Independent Living have been designed to address the needs of learners working at Entry Level.

The qualification focuses on transferable social and life skills which are essential for liv-ing and working in the community.

The qualification will be of benefit to pupils who Are beginning their journey towards independent living by raising awareness and developing skills around issues that they are likely to face. The qualification is made up of a range of practical activities e.g. cooking, cleaning, making drinks and shopping as well as a number of educational trips with our educational partners at Groundworks, re-cycling centres and colleges.

On other occa-sions, there will be opportunities to participate in a range more general sporting activities. The qualification itself requires a set level of participation. Pu-pils are expected to take part in all practical sessions, they can-not opt out of activities they do not like as we have to accom-modate the whole group. PE kit needs to be worn every ses-sion.

Area 1: Develop skills in a range of arts, acting, singing, dance, art, music, front of house Use these skills to create a performance for an audience Examples: Put on a play, develop comedy skills such as clowning, develop skills in singing, create a dance, learn a new skill such as Djaying, work with an artist. Organise a concert, create tickets, flyers. Make a short film, visit a recording studio make a record-ing. An important aspect of the course is a commitment to perform Area 2: Evaluate a live performance See a theatre show and write about it Residential visit to York or Edinburgh see a show. Area 3: Explore local performing arts venues Back stage tour of the Sunderland Empire, Baltic, or Sage Find out about the different roles in the theatre and what their job involves. Arts Award Bronze students carry out the above tasks through completing the four parts of the Award to a high standard: Part A, Explore: This encourages students to take part in Arts activities. At Epinay these will happen in class and in various workshops both in and out of school. We will also have artists into school to work with students. They explore as a participant. Part B, Find Out: This encourages students to find out about being part of an audience. Epinay students will visit Galleries and Art Shows. They ex-plore the Arts as an audience member. Part C, Share: Epinay students will find out about which Artists inspire them. Interviews and studies on the chosen Artists take place both off site and on. They research, summarise and evidence what they have found out about their inspiration. Part D, Share: Epinay students will share and pass on the skills they have learned to others. They run workshops for the younger children in school and showcase their skills for adults and professionals. They evaluate and reflect on how well sharing their skills went. Teachers at Epinay School who deliver Arts Award are trained Arts Award Advisers who act as assessors, facilitators and mentors for the students and to help them gain the qualification. Arts Award Bronze is appropriate for our older students at Epinay because they: discover the enjoyment of creating and participating in any art form develop their creativity and leadership skills learn new skills and share them with others get to work with or experience working with creative arts professionals gain experience and knowledge to progress into further education and employment

Bronze Arts Award is externally moderated. This means the adviser’s as-sessment is validated by a moderator from Trinity, by looking in detail at a sample of arts logs/portfolios. After Arts Award Bronze some students may be able to progress to Arts Award Silver which is equivalent to GCSE Art Grades A* - C.

Through opportunities provided in gardening pupils will benefit from working in a calming environment whilst developing essential skills of co-operation and team work. Taking ownership of a project or a small plot develops a sense of responsibility and pride in a job well done whilst more energetic jobs can help release tension and frustration. Aspects of science, art, mathematics can all be ad-dressed in a real life context, whilst developing valua-ble work skills in a supportive environment.
