Dear Antonio Park Families,
Another short week has flown by – we’re getting a bit used
to these 4 day weeks! I hope that everyone enjoyed their
ANZAC day holiday, and managed to find some time to
spend with their family and also to remember our fallen
war heroes.
On Monday night I travelled into the MCG with my two
eldest children to see the ‘ANZAC eve’ clash between
Richmond and Melbourne. It was amazing to witness the
dawn of a big event – an enormous crowd, a moving pre-
match ceremony in the near darkness, and then the lights
being switched on for 85 000 people to roar at a cracker of
a footy match. Hard to believe that this incredible event,
which now seems certain to be an annual feature (and
which I would argue was ruined only by the result!), was
just a seed of an idea in one man’s mind less than two
years ago.
It was a reminder to me of how great things can be
achieved relatively quickly when you have the right mix of
inspiration, dedication, and expertise to make them hap-
pen. And of how special it is when the right mix of respect
for the old traditions (in this case, of the features of the
ANZAC ceremony and imagery) and the innovation of new
ideas is just right.
This story has come into my mind this week as I’ve been
taking the time to have one-on-one meetings with all of our
staff at Antonio Park. These meetings are a chance for me
to get to know each of our teachers and education support
staff, to learn about their strengths and talents, and to hear
their thoughts about where our school is at and where they
feel the next steps for improvement may be. I’ve found
these meetings to be quite inspirational. They have ex-
posed to me a staff that have a genuine love for the school
and its community, and that possess exactly what I’ve
mentioned above: an exciting mix of inspiration, dedication
and expertise. There is a real feeling around our staff that
a great school is on the cusp of even greater things.
Two main themes have stood out to me as I have met
each one of the staff. That is, the desire to protect and
enhance everything that is special and unique about Anto-
nio Park and its community, and the eagerness to launch
into the next exciting chapter of Antonio Park’s history.
Respecting the old, embracing the new.
My intention as Principal is to do ensure that I do just that:
endeavour to preserve and enhance what makes our
school uniquely great, and at the same time set a course
for exciting future directions based firmly on the goal of
ensuring each and every one of our students reaches
their full potential.
2018 Foundation Information Night
Term 2 is upon us and that means it is the season of
school Open Nights and Information Evenings. Hav-
ing a daughter in Grade 5 this year has meant I’ve
had my fair share of Secondary School tours and
information sessions this year myself! If you know of
a family who is potentially interested in enrolling at
our school for Foundation next year, please remind
them that our Foundation Information night will be
held this coming Wednesday at 6pm. It is a great
opportunity to find out more about our school, and
specifically our Foundation program.

What’s Happening in Level 1?
We have lots of exciting things planned for the Term beginning with our ‘Silly Science’ incursion and ‘Feeling Safe’ workshops. Notices went home with payment envelopes last week. If you did not receive a notice please see your classroom teacher. The School Nurse will be visiting us over the next couple of weeks. If you have not returned your forms from the large envelope, please do so as soon as possible regardless of if you have concerns or not. This week students have been spending time being introduced to our Inquiry topic, ‘Young Einsteins,’ discussing what they think science is and what a scientist might look like. We have very much enjoyed hearing their thoughts and seeing their enthusiastic smiles when they discover the many different things a scientist studies. Our comprehension focus for the first half of this Term is ‘summarising’. Summarising means to identify the main parts of a text, usually a story. At
school we have been practising this using the prompts ‘Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then’. You could do the same thing when sharing a book with your child. Don’t forget to come and check out our Level One Persuasive Writing display outside the staff room and in the Level One corridor. Students had lots of fun debating whether summer or winter was better and are very proud of their work. Just a reminder that we have school photos on Tuesday. Foundation photos are scheduled for the morning, so please check that your child’s face, hair and uniform are clean and tidy before they head to school! Have a lovely weekend! Courtney, Mitchell, Bronwyn and Rachel Level 1 Team
ANZAC Day Our school captains did a stellar job at our assembly on Monday lead-ing the community in commemorating ANZAC Day. Thank you to the four captains and to Bonnie Ratten for preparing this, and the many members of our community who came along to the assembly on Mon-day to recognise this significant day. We also thank our JSC repre-sentatives who sold badges and wristbands in the lead up to this spe-cial day on our Australian calendar. School Photos These annual photos are next Tuesday (May 2nd). Please remember to return the envelope from Schoolpix prior to the day or on the day. If you have chosen the order online option you don’t need to return the envelope as your order will be automatically processed. We look for-ward to seeing everyone in their full school uniform, with their hair tidy, and their beautiful smiling faces!
2018 Enrolments Following our message in last week’s newsletter we had a number of our current families come to the office and enrol their 2018 Foundation child! It was so wonderful to see one of our future Foundation students with his backpack on which was almost the size of him!! Chatting in the yard, we know there are more of you in our community and we’d love to see more of you enrol as soon as you can so our planning can get underway. If you know of a neighbour, friend, or family member who has a child of school age in 2018 who would like to book a tour please ask them to contact the school office to book in. We conduct tours of our wonderful school each Wednesday at 9.30am. Have a great week. Tim and Annette

We have had a wonderful start to Term 2 in Level 2! Students are learning about multiplication in numeracy and further consoli-dating and extending their knowledge. It’s a great idea to speak with your child about equal groups and using skip counting to further practise these skills at home. We are mid-way through learning about visualising as a comprehension strategy in literacy. Students do so by imagining images in their minds about what they are reading, focusing on adjectives and other descriptive language to create these images. You can use this as a tool at home by discussing how your child imagines what they read. We have begun our inquiry unit for term 2: Australia Our Home, exploring the geography of our country. Our rotations will begin next week, students
and teachers alike are very excited! Narrative writing has begun and all students are excited to share their ideas. Our persuasive writing wall is on display in the main building. It is a wonderful opportunity to see the hard work our students put into their writing pieces. In ICT we have been focusing on developing students’ typing skills. Here is a link you might want to use at home to further assist your child. http://www.bbc.co.uk/guides/z3c6tfr

What’s Happening in Level 3?
What’s Happening in Level 2?
The students in Level 3 are off to a great start this term. Our inquiry unit for Term 2 is ‘Can the force be with you?’. Throughout this unit we will be discovering information and extending our understandings around Simple Machines. These machines come under the headings of levers, wedges, inclined planes, wheels and axles and pulleys. We are really looking for-ward to making new discoveries and finding out where these machines are found every day and how they make our life easier. Last week the students were given their first homework task for Term 2. Please ensure your child has made a start on this. They do not need to buy anything new for this activity. The simple machines that the students are to focus on should be found in or around your house. Each student’s plans and ideas for their mini advertisement should be done in their homework book. This enables each teacher to see the journey that the students have gone on to reach their final product. Please ensure that your child’s reading log and rubric are cut out neatly and glued into their homework books.
Last week the Level 3s and 2s had their first buddy session for Term 2. Everyone had a great time chatting about their holidays. The stu-dents played a circle game, which involved cooperation and team work. There were lots of laughs and strange moves happening. The students also needed to think outside the square to complete an A to Z chart about their holidays. It was great to see the students thinking imaginatively and working together to fill in all the letters. Below are some photos that were taken during the session. Reminders:
Homework due Friday 28/4/2107.
School Photos – Tuesday 2nd May. Please return slip to classroom teacher
Cross Country is on Tuesday 16th May
Have a great week Level 3 team.
What’s Happening in Level 4?
Writing: This week, Level 4 have begun our new writing genre, narrative. Over the next few weeks, students will be creating narrative stories for their prep buddies, based on their interests. We are all very excited to see the development of these pieces of writing. Reading: It has been fantastic to hear some of the discussions students have been having about their literacy novels. We are very impressed with the quality and depth of responses from all students regarding their books. Camp: Thank you again to families for getting camp forms back so far, if you do have any forms outstanding, could these please be returned as soon as possible. A medical administration form has been sent home this week, it would be greatly appreciated if this was also returned promptly. Interschool Sport: This Friday is the first week of Interschool Sport for term 2, with our first game against Croydon Hills. We look forward to everyone participating in our winter teams: netball, football, softball, soccer, volleystars and sports squad.
Sports Training: Our morning sport training is back again this term, each Wednesday mornings from 8am. Sports squad members are also encouraged to attend Wednesday morning training sessions and participate in one of the sports running this term. If your child is involved in a sport that trains on the oval, it would be a good idea to bring a second pair of shoes - the oval is becoming muddier now that we head into the wetter weather. Should it be raining Wednesday morning, we ask that you please use your judgement - we will most likely cancel train-ing. Hope you are having a wonderful week, Level 4 Team Bonnie, Jana, Danielle, Lauren and Kate
Bullying outside the school If bullying happens online or via text messages outside school report it to the school, especially if other children from the school are involved or it is making your child uncomfortable at school. Schools are aware of the potential harmful effects of bullying, including cyberbullying, on young people and take reports of bullying seriously.
Talk to your school immediately The sooner the school receives information about a bullying issue the quicker they can respond. School staff understand that it can be distressing to report that your child is being bullied. They will try to support you and your child as much as possible and include you in discussions about strategies that could be used.
What should I do? Contact the school and make an appointment to discuss the issue.
Do not directly approach any other student or their family.
Ask the school for a copy of your school's policies and any handouts on bullying.
Work with your child’s school to solve the problem by establishing a plan for dealing with the current situation and future bullying incidents. Schools must follow privacy laws and may not be able to tell you everything that has taken place, especially about any other children involved. These laws also keep you and your child’s information private too.
