they do not have a class (study hall, teacher aide, office helper, etc.), as long as their parent completes and signs a form that will be made available in December. For those high school students whose only transportation is by school bus, they will be supervised in a central location during the times they are not required to be here otherwise. ALL junior high students are expected to be in attendance the entire day, all three days. Any 8th Graders taking a high school class will report to that class for the exam. District-Wide Early Release on Wednesday, November 27 & Friday, December 20 There will be a district-wide 2-hour early release for all students on Wednesday, November 27, 2019 and Friday, December 20, 2019. This then begins our Thanksgiving and Winter Breaks, respectively! STOPit School Safety Website/App Arlington Local School is once again utilizing a district-wide anonymous reporting system for school safety concerns. The STOPit system allows students, parents, staff, and community members to anonymously report incidents of threats, harassment, assaults, bullying, cyber-bullying, weapons, or drugs on campus. Information can be shared through the website http://stopitsolutions.com or through the STOPit app that is available for iPhone and android phone users. The access code for both online and app access is ARLINGTON. Please talk with your children about the importance of reporting safety concerns they observe happening at school, and encourage them to make good use of this new system. We will continue to share information about this system with students, staff, and parents, and users are encouraged to learn more about it through the many resources available on the website. Ball Metal Recycling Program Arlington Local School District will be participating in the Ball Metal Can Collection throughout the school year. Parents, please feel free to participate by collecting aluminum cans and dropping them off on the front porch any day of the week. We will make sure that the cans make it to storage, and remember, every little bit helps our cause. Funds collected from the can drive come back to our school. Help us to take advantage of Ball Metal's service to Hancock County Schools. Safer School Tip Line The Ohio Department of Education has created a safer school tip line which provides anonymous reporting of suspicious activity or situations in our school that endanger students and staff. Simply call 844-SaferOH (844-723-3764) to make a report. Operators are available 24/7 and have immediate access to local law enforcement and school officials. Keeping You Informed This newsletter is only one way we try to keep you informed of the many events taking place throughout the year. November Counselor Corner – Mrs. Hutcheson

It is hard to believe that one quarter of our school year has already been completed. Our first report cards are going out November 8, 2019 and with it may come some celebrations or concerns. Parent/Teacher Conferences were held last month, but as always I welcome working with students and parents if there is something you would like to address before the next conferences come around in December. I am always happy to be added to your team of resources if you have any concerns. Seniors should keep in mind that the end of the month brings an important deadline. All applications to four-year colleges/universities should be completed by November 30. Additionally, all last attempts on the ACT should be completed by the December 8 test. This will allow universities to have the information they need to make those acceptances and make sure seniors are included for all financial aid. Please make sure to complete the FAFSA as well, as many universities have a December 1 priority deadline. Even if your family believes they will not qualify, I recommend it be completed as many colleges and scholarships use the FAFSA as a first step to see who is qualified. If it is not completed, it could cause a delay and other financial aid opportunities may be missed out on as a result. Please watch senior emails and the counselor website for any new local scholarships that become available. These will become more frequent with the completion of the early application season. The Community Foundation will present to our seniors in early December to help in understanding their process. The focus for juniors should be on exploring and defining more clearly what is their next step after graduation, whether that is looking at colleges or career opportunities and narrowing down their lists of possibilities. A group of our top juniors will be participating in a Competitive College Admission Workshop on November 13. In December, all juniors will have the opportunity to participate in a Career Day at Rhodes State College. Sophomores will have their first connection with Millstream Career Center on Friday, November 8. Millstream will give an informational program on what opportunities are available at their site. This will be followed up on Thursday, December 5 when all sophomores will take a trip to Millstream to see and consider for themselves if this may be a direction they want to go as juniors.

The first week of December will bring the opportunity to retest for our State Tests for students who were not proficient in the spring. Retesting opportunities will occur throughout the first week. All students have been notified if they will need to participate. Seventh through ninth graders will continue to focus on developing that necessary framework for success by increasing time management, problem solving, cooperative and work ethic skills, as well as furthering their content area learning. I will meet individually with many of them to decide where their strengths lie and how to improve in areas of need. In this month of Thanksgiving, I wish to thank each of you for allowing me to share in your child's journey to success. If there is any way I can support your student and family, please ask! My goal is to work as part of a parent/school team to encourage our students’ best efforts. Together we can make a difference.

Senior of the Month Program - Amanda Miller

Once again the Academic Alliance will be sponsoring our "Senior of the Month" program. Each month the staff will vote for a senior who demonstrates the following criteria: scholarship (including improvement/outstanding efforts), leadership, citizenship, and involvement in school/community activities. Chosen seniors will select a $25 gift card of their choice from the Academic Alliance. A biography and pictures of the senior will be placed in the display case by the high school office. In May, these seniors will submit an essay to a committee of teachers and Academic Alliance members (who do not have a senior child). Based on the essays, one senior will be chosen as our "Senior of the Year." This senior will receive a gift card/monetary award from the Academic Alliance as well. Depending on his/her postsecondary goals, the award must be used for the purchasing of college supplies or materials necessary for enriching his/her future career. October Senior of the Month-Austin Bolander

Family Austin is the son of Erin Mason and Bryan and Penny Bolander. He has seven siblings: Jasmine, Bryce, Gage, Nick, Drew, Hope, and Payten. One of his fondest childhood memories was going on a fire call with his father. It definitely sparked an interest in him to become a fire fighter. Austin has the upmost respect and admiration for his role model…aka Dad. His favorite family tradition is spending time with his family around the Christmas holiday. Extracurricular Activities, Volunteering, and Work Austin has participated in football all four years of high school. He is also an active member of the FFA. According to Miss Keck, Austin has achieved several accomplishments as an FFA member. “Austin is currently the FFA Sentinel. He has earned the Chapter FFA Degree; the highest award our chapter can bestow. He has previously been awarded the Chapter Leadership Award, given to non-officers who lead within the chapter. Within the FFA Career Development Events Austin has been competitive in Soil Judging, Tractor Troubleshooting, and Small Engines competitions. His Supervised Agricultural Experience projects have consisted of numerous home improvements. He has also completed over 20 hours of community service, much of which was spent with the Arlington Fire Department.”

In addition to these school activities, he volunteers his time at the Arlington Fire Department. For almost two years, he has worked as a bagger at the Kroger in Findlay. Enjoyment and the Future…. In Austin’s spare time he enjoys hanging out with his family and friends. Some of his best high school memories have been made with the new people he has met and all the FFA trips. After high school, he plans to start working. At this time, he is undecided on the type of work; however, he will definitely be applying for the volunteer fire department. What the staff has to say about Austin:

“Austin is a very hardworking, polite, and respectful student. He is always in a good mood and looking for the silver lining when road blocks are put in his path. He has been a pleasure to have as a student for the last 3 years and I wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors. I just know he will succeed at whatever he puts his mind too.”

6

“Austin is a dedicated FFA member who leads by example. He frequently works quietly behind the scenes to make sure our events are a success. He is always supportive of his teammates and classmates, so that everyone can succeed together.”

“Austin is one of the nicest people I have ever met. He is always willing to help others. His kindness will brighten anyone's day and his easy going manner makes working with him in the kitchen great! He is one student I will always remember.”

“As the Director of Football Operations, Austin is always there to do whatever we need to make sure that practices run smooth and set up for games is done right. He is a vital part of our team and he always puts the team first.”

FFA News

By Reporter: Paige Hartman Fall Career Development Events In this past month we’ve begun preparing for the next round of CDE’s that include Food Science & Technology and Job Interview. In the Food Science competition a team of four members will complete an aroma test, triangle test, food safety hazard identification, food science equipment identification, and a food product development practicum. Job Interview competitors create a resume, references, and cover letter, fill out a job application, complete a mock interview and follow up letter.

Halloween Meeting Also this month we held our monthly meeting, which was our Halloween and pizza party meeting! We had many of the members come dressed in their costumes

to practice some parliamentary procedure and enjoy some pizza and fun! Austin Bolander was voted best dressed with Chenoa Newman and Karmen Kain coming in 2nd and 3rd respectively.

National Convention

October is a big deal for FFA members everywhere. Each year, the Naional FFA Convention is held in Indianapolis. The FFA Convention offers a Career Expo and various learnig sessions from experts in the field. Students participating in the convention also toured the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the World’s

Toughest Rodeo. Students also gathered with other FFA groups throughout Ohio at the Buckeye Bash.

American Degree Recipient: Bailey Parke While some of our members were in Indianapolis for the National FFA Convention they got to watch one of our very own alumni, Bailey Parke, receive his American FFA Degree! This is the highest and most prestigious degree able to be achieved in FFA, awarded to fewer than 0.5% of FFA members. To earn an American degree you must have been an active member for the past three years and be graduated from high school for a year. You must also earn at least $10,000 and productively invest $7,500 in your projects. Bailey worked at Freed Farm, Boehm Dairy, and Parke’s Power to earn his award. Applicants must also have participated in at least 50 hours of community service and a variety of leadership activities. Bailey is only the 26th Arlington FFA member to earn this distinction since our chapter started in 1929. We are very proud of Bailey’s achievements. Pictured are Diane, Bailey, Kendra, and Chad Parke.
