GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGEDecember is a time for celebrations at E.D.W. Our Council Christmas party is Thursday,

December 18, 2008, following the Council meeting. There will be plenty of refreshments, hearty appetizers, wonderful desserts, numerous door prizes, and four raffle baskets at our Christmas party. Breakfast with Santa occurs Sunday, December 21, 2008, and it is always a big hit. The New Year’s Eve Gala, a terrific event that rings in the New Year, happens on the 31st, so please make your reservations soon to attend this gala.

PGK Jim Holland is again busy with Keep Christ in Christmas (KCIC). He is doing a great job. In December, along with KCIC, we can consider contributing towards the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) which needs contributions throughout the year and especially during this month of December. Federal employees can still contribute to their Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) and I would like to remind all that KOVAR is # 42569.

With the Council Christmas Party coming on December 18, 2008 and then the annual meeting on January 15, 2009, we will have the opportunity to present some of our brother knights their membership pins for fifty years and twenty five years with the Knights of Columbus.

In November we held our annual Memorial Mass with more then sixty people present to help in the remembrance of twenty-five Brother Knights who departed us this past year. It is extremely important for E.D.W. that our Financial Secretary, PGK Jerry Garren at 202-498-1638, the office at 703-536-9656, or myself at 703-685-3795 is contacted when we lose a brother knight. We would rather hear the news twice, than learn about this sad event at a later time.

Nominations for the Columbus Club Board of Directors should be submitted to the nominating committee which consists of PGK Art Gamotis, PGK Jerry Garren and GK Robert Dannemiller.

Have a safe and merry Christmas!

GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE

NOTICE OF ANNUAL MEETING OF THE COLUMBUS CLUB OF ARLINGTON. INC.

January 15TH 2009, 7:30 PM Pursuant to the By-Laws of the Corporation, Article II, Section 1, this serves as notice

to the membership of the annual meeting of the Corporation, which will be held on Janu-ary 15TH 2009 immediately following the 7:30 p.m. meeting of the Council.

Please make sure to attend, as there are two very important matters that require a quorum to be present for approval.

First, the Corporation Budget will be presented for membership approval. Second, the Columbus Club will hold an election to fill the vacancies created by the expiring two-year terms of George Kirby, Paul Bothwell, Dan Metzler, Dave Paduda, and John O’Neill III. While all of the incumbents are seeking re-election, please contact the chairman of the Election Committee, GK Bob Dannemiller, via email at [email protected] if you are interested in serving on the Board.

In order to conduct business as orderly and efficiently as possible, the agenda of discus-sion items will be strictly followed. Please submit any agenda items in writing to President Owen Beirne Jr. via email at [email protected] by December 22nd, 2008, for prior consideration and approval of the Board.

FROM THE DESK OF THE FINANCIAL SECRETARY

by Jerry Garren, FS, PGKYou should receive (or have received) your dues notice for

2009 early this month. If you have not, please be aware that you can mail a check to the Council without your billing slip. In the event that you do, please remember to write your membership number in the memo section of the check. Dues will increase by $5.00 in accordance with the resolution previously passed by the Columbus Club in 2003 to increase dues by $2.00 each year and Supreme’s Special Assessment of $3.00. Regular Members’ dues will be $119; Honorary Members’ dues will be $65, Honorary Life Members dues’ will be $46 (Columbus Club dues only).

Please remember that a “member in good standing” is defined simply as a Brother Knight who pays his dues. But when a mem-ber doesn’t pay dues, he hurts the Council finances, as there are significant costs associated with each membership (e.g., State and Supreme dues that MUST be paid, even if a member does not pay). So, when members fail to pay, they unnecessarily increase the costs to this charitable organization and impact our ability to help others.

If you are having money difficulties, we want to keep you as a member. The Council will help any Brother Knight who cannot pay their dues. All you have to do is to write to [email protected] or call me at (202) 498-1638 and I will help. Also, if you are in arrears, please take the time to call me to discuss your particular situation.

Please be thoughtful…pay on time…Men join the Knights of Columbus for various reasons. If you are no longer interested in membership at EDW, please contact me to arrange withdrawal or, if still interested in membership, transfer to another Council.

Honorary Life Members There seems to be a misunderstand-ing of the rules concerning HLMs and their responsibility to pay Columbus Club dues. As you well know, the Supreme Constitution provides that HLM receive a full exemption from the payment of Council dues. However, this exemption does not apply to dues levied by their “home corporation.” Please be aware that the By-Laws of the Columbus Club DO NOT provide for the exemption, or reduction, of dues for HLMs. As such, HLMs are reminded that they still must pay Columbus Club dues ($46) in order to ensure that sufficient funds are available for the operation of the grounds.

The Council Officers, Columbus Club Board Members, and I are very interested in accommodating HLMs who may be experienc-ing financial problems. If you are an HLM (a treasured member) who needs an accommodation, please contact me immediately to discuss potential options. However, in keeping with the previous ruling of the State Advocate, HLMs who fail to pay or contact me will remain members in good standing and permitted to attend Council meetings. However, they will NOT be permitted to utilize Columbus Club facilities.

Making it Easy Okay, with all of the above having been said, we have been working on establishing an online payment process. Unfortunately, it won’t be ready for roll out this month. Please keep checking my column for more information.

KOVAR and the Combined Federal Campaign It’s that time of the year again. All Federal employees are reminded that it is VERY easy to support the Virginia KOVAR charity through regular payroll deductions made possible through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). Please remember that EDW can receive credit for your contributions when you provide a copy of your pledge sheet to me. Thank you for your generous support.

Deaths I am saddened to report that Father Louis Gagnard, our Chaplain Emeritus on November 3rd. He has served us for many years and will be missed by all. Please keep him, as well as his family in your prayers. We also lost our Past Grand Knight Ernie Klint in October. Please keep him and his family in your prayers.

Merry Christmas. May God bless each and every one of you and your families.

Jerry Garren, PGKFinancial Secretary

Please join us for some upcoming events. On Thursday, Decem-ber 4th we will celebrate the holidays with our annual gift exchange. This is a great opportunity to meet LUK members. All you have to do is to bring an appetizer or sweet to share and if you want to

participate in the gift exchange, bring a wrapped gift worth $20. We will be gathering at the Council Home at 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday, December 21st Santa will take a break from over-seeing the hard working elfs at the North Pole to make his yearly trek to attend the “Breakfast with Santa.” Ladies U Knighted will be taking Santa pixs for a $5.00 contribution. The photos will be available for pick up at the breakfast. What a wonderful gift for family and friends! Please see the ad in this month’s Knight Life for more information. Looking for last minute gifts and stocking stuffers for a Brother Knight? We will be selling KofC ornaments and a beautiful photo of the Council Home done by none other than our artist extraordinaire, Meredith Dittmar.

FISH CLUB NEWSby Captain Mark

The Fish Club will host our annual Christmas party on Satur-day December 6. The party starts at 6:00 PM in the Old Council Home. Please plan on joining us that night.

BLOOD BANK NEWSRay Fioramonti

The 2009 INOVA/EDW Blood Drive sched-ule is not set yet. They notified us that due to recent low turnouts they are unwilling to commit to an advance year-long schedule. In fact they may switch from setting up in the lower lounge to sending over a “blood mobile.”

Anyway, we thank all our regular and occasional donors for their contributions over the years and ask that you listen and look for future announcements regarding blood drives. We will notify you of dates via the internet, phone, and/or notices posted around the club. Hopefully if we can increase our donor numbers they will resume a regular schedule.

FAMILY OF THE MONTHJim and Janet Walsh are our December Family of the Month.

They have been invaluable members of E.D.W. for years. The annual kids Halloween party is a success due to all of the work Janet does during the party and in preparing for it throughout the year. Jim is very involved with KOVAR these days after having been our KOVAR chairman for many years. He is a very active member of our Red Coats and you will frequently see him working many of our day time events. Additionally, Jim frequently attends our Retiree lunches in the Council Home. Jim and Janet are steadfast supporters of E.D.W. and they frequently attend many of our events either by themselves, with their family, or with many of their numerous friends. Thank you Jim and Janet for what you have done and all you will continue to do for E.D.W. and others. Please join me in congratulating Jim and Janet for being our December Family of the Month.

KNIGHT OF THE MONTHJohn Thompson is our December Knight of the Month. He is

a long time member of E.D.W. who over the years has repeatedly welded our barbeque pit and many of our picnic tables so we can better enjoy the grounds and our BBQs. Additionally, John has organized our Car Show and this year there was an even greater turn out of truly impressive cars which many of us enjoyed viewing. Thank you John on all you have done and all you will continue to do for E.D.W. Please join me in congratulating John Thompson for being the December Knight of the Month.

EDW WAITERS - AKA “REDCOATS”Bob Muschamp

Some members have suggested an article about our well-known “Redcoats”. Here is the history as I understand it.

In the early 1950’s when our forefathers purchased the property on Little Falls Road and moved E.D.W, Council there (from Cher-rydale), the Redcoats were established. This started with about 20-25 volunteers as a way for E.D.W. to be able to host dinners for members and wives as well as to host “outside” functions to provide revenue (at little labor cost). Over the years the tradition of EDW “Redcoats” has continued and flourished.

Today there are six “Redcoat” teams ranging in number from about 15 to 40. One team, the “retiree” team enables us to cater to several weekday daytime functions. Many volunteer Redcoats are now well into their 70’s and 80’s; some have been waitering for 40-50 years (It becomes a hard to break habit). We’re always ready to welcome new (and younger) members to fill vacancies and add to our ranks, and keep the tradition going. Recruiting is often done after Degree ceremonies, at the Council Home, or simply through word-of-mouth. Several have joined a waiter team as they had a friend already on that team. “Redcoats” are not paid. They often work 3-4 hours bartending and serving meals, bussing table, etc. as a ways of helping our Council. Once they’ve completed serving, waiters are provided a meal (same as they’ve served), and share in some camaraderie. We have “Redcoats” from all walks of life: teachers, law enforcement, various government agencies and other careers.

Revenue in the “Waiters Fund” is derived from tips from custom-ers and a small stipend from the Columbus Club. An “appreciation dinner/dance” for waiters and wives is held annually.

The “Redcoat” team captains regularly vote to contribute these funds to various charitable and other worthwhile causes. Recent examples include a $1,000 contribution to the Arlington Diocese Priest’s Retirement Fund; EDW’s Capital Campaign Fund-$1,000; E.D.W.’s annual Thanksgiving Dinner fund; the annual KOVAR drive. The waiters fund has also paid for items such as several new, sturdy picnic tables, wrought-iron deck furniture, large, “ten-top” banquet tables; new tray stands and trays; renovations in the “Paradise Lounge” (in ‘06).

This is all meant as general information to all as well as an ap-peal for new members to step forward and join our ranks. Contact any of our team captains; PGK Kenny Goss; PGK Vince Long; Jim Gravette, Jim Walsh, Steve Hilla, Patrick Kerrigan, or myself - Bob Muschamp. If you don’t know, or can’t reach one of us, contact the Columbus Club office, 703-536-9656, ext. 6. We’ll give you a half hour of on-the-job training and you’ll become a full-fledged EDW “Redcoat”.

NEW YEAR’S EVE GALA AT EDWBob Muschamp

Here we are into December with primary focus on the Christ-mas season followed shortly thereafter by another New Year’s Eve. I hope that many of those reading this who have not been to a New Year’s Eve Gala at EDW will give some serious thought to, and then plan to get a table together and join in the festivities. It’s really a very pleasant evening with a very nice group of EDW members and their friends.

The evening starts this year at 7pm with an open bar and light hor’s d’oeuvres; note: beer, wine and soda is available at no additional cost all evening; BYOL for hard liquor. From 7:45 - 9pm a 3-course meal will be served; salad, dessert and choice of entree: prime rib, Dijon crusted salmon or pork tenderloin. 9pm-12:30am dance music by the Jim Bowie Band (w/vocalist), which, in previous years has kept the dance floor full with their fine choice of dance numbers. At 11:45 pm a bottle of champagne is placed on every table; hats, noisemakers, etc. are provided and there’ll be plenty of door prizes (save your ticket stubs). At 12:05 AM (2009) a continental breakfast spread will be available; coffee, juice, bagels, danish, etc. At only $95 per couple you’ll get a full evenings entertainment, food, drink, dancing and good company - and your money’s worth!!

Tickets will be available in Columbus Club office; if/when you call in your reservations you’ll be asked your entree choices. ALL tickets must be picked up and paid for by Monday, December 22nd. Call Betty at 703-536-9656 X6 for reservations. Hope you’ll be part of the expected 225-250 revelers on New Year’s Eve!!

IS MY MIDDLE NAME IS MISSPELLED?

By Steven BrownWe all know that Edward Douglass White, Jr. (EDW) is the

namesake of our Council; but do you know where he is buried? Out of curiosity about his life, I did some research on EDW and found out he is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Georgetown. On a beautiful, hot, summer day, my wife and I went on a pilgrimage

to his burial site hoping to find a magnificent memo-rial to the first Catholic Su-preme Court Chief Justice. Instead we found a rather ordinary tomb stone on the very edge of the cemetery, within throwing distance of the Rock Creek. Even more surprising was the misspelling of his middle name. I later learned that

our original charter at Su-preme headquarters also has the middle name misspelled. The unique spelling must have been an irritant to him all his life. I was unable to find out who made the mistake on the monument and why it wasn’t changed. Does anyone have a clue?

For those who would like to visit the grave of our council’s name sake, he is buried in historic Oak Hill Cemetery, 3001 R Street NW, Washington DC, and plot 600 East.Visit the cemetery office for more specific directions. The cemetery is the premier burial location for many of Washington’s famous and wealthy. It is a beautiful site with excellent gardens and well worth a visit

KNIGHT LIFE 7

THINK ABOUT IT…By Jerry Garren, Financial Secretary

The Knights of Columbus was founded specifically to financially help members’ widows and children in the event of a death. Think about it, I promise that it’s going to happen to every single one of us. We all have “a time” and, when it comes, it’s going to be a tear-filled time that will be extremely difficult for our surviving families.

The Knights of Columbus insurance program is one of the highest rated and most trusted in our nation. When those facts are combined with the reasonable rates they offer, I think that the life insurance offered through the Knights of Columbus is a pretty good deal. I know that no one really likes the insurance man (except on the day a benefit check is to be issued), but take a moment to think about what NEEDS to happen on the day you die.

In keeping with the Knight’s original purpose, remember our Fraternal Benefit Advisors are available to help your family address many of the financial issues that will arise after your death. They are there for you and your family…whether or not you purchased insurance from the Knights.

However, if you pass away without life insurance through the Knights of Columbus, you will limit your family’s future options to purchase insurance through our organization. Unfortunately, your surviving wife and minor children will be ineligible to apply for an annuity, life insurance or long term care programs that the Knights offer to protect themselves.

Guys, this isn’t just about you. Be responsible and think about the future. Don’t limit the options that are available to your surviv-ing family and contact a Fraternal Benefits Advisor today.

THE COUNCIL HOME IS THE PLACE TO BE!

(Reviewed by The Food Critic November 2008)

(*****) Stars out of 5!!!!On several occasions recently in November, I ventured into

the Council Home to see what all the fuss was about on Sundays. I was greeted by a friendly bar keep and staff. As I looked up on the food board menu (similar to how hymns are listed in Church), I was greeted by a wonderful menu.

Hot Wings .50 cents each (and they can create VERY HOT ones too!)Knee pads (tiny cheeseburgers) 4 for $5Chili dog or Junkyard dog $2.75 or 2 for $5Hot Ham & Cheese Sub $6Double R Bar Burger w/ fries $6Freshly made steak & cheese subs $6

Other specials (all homemade) that month (all homemade) as weather dictated were:

MeatloafGuinness StewSpiced Shrimp

I was very surprised by the freshness, the quick service, and the abundance of the portions. The beer was very cold and ski gloves were needed for the frosted mugs and bottles. Great wine selection too!

Did I mention the six (6) 47” (1080) HD LCDs with the NFL Ticket all spread out in four different rooms? For the best food, beverage, and company around, the Council Home is the place to be!

Do not forget the Saturday afternoons with the famous “Scot-ty” Italian Subs, Tuesday night - ½ lb Burger Night for $5.50, Wednesday – Taco Night, Thursday night – Spaghetti Night (Huge portions)

Oh, by the way, you can place an order by phone (703-536-9656 # 3) to pick up. Try it , I did, it was great!

Facts about the Capital Improvements (CI) and the Capital Campaign (CCF) Fund that you should know!

Owen J. Beirne Jr. PresidentIf you remember, we secured a loan in January 2006 and work

was commenced in May of 2006. Here are the highlights of what has been done since May of 2006 through 2008:

We borrowed - $211,000 We have raised through the CCF - $137,000Total Funding - $348,000We have undertaken and will have completed 25 projects in 33 monthsTotal cost of CI’s completed - $351,600 (difference in cost and funding, about $3,000, came from previous construction proceeds)In this Knight Life (KL) is an excel spreadsheet which shows each project that was done, the cost for each one, and a total cost. We refinanced two 5 year notes into one 5 year note in May of 2008 with a significant interest rate reduction Current loan balance as of 11-8-2008 - $146,700 and that is our only debt.

This was a very aggressive plan from the beginning. Many hands went to work on this plan to see that it got done, no matter what. I want to thank all of you who had a hand in getting it done!

However, we still have Phase III (and the final phase) of the CI to be done in 2009. An excel spread sheet in this KL indicates that we are looking at about another $375,000 of work that we need to get done.

So now that we have shown you the whole picture, Jim Savarese, Chairman of the CCF, and I ask that as the year comes to an end, please think of the Capital Campaign. We have proved that we can

VENTURING CREW 2473 CELEBRATES ITS FOURTH

ANNIVERSARY IN DECEMBERCrew 2473 celebrates its fourth year in existence at Knights of

Columbus Council 2473, and what a year we have planned ahead. We’re having a training event at Camp Snyder on December 13. We’ll be bunking in a cabin for a night and taking a leadership development course designed for Venturing-aged youth. Our fourth annual pre-Christmas bowling event at Ft. Myer bowling alley will be on Friday, December 19 at 7:30pm. This is a great chance for interested teens and new-comers to see what we’re all about.

We’re selling Christmas wreaths again this year and will be at the December 21 brunch to sell what we have left. Call Carl Stout, 703-992-8870, to order yours.

We added seven new Ventures and three new Venturing adults to our number this fall at our annual Crew fall picnic. Several of our Ventures have moved on to college in Virginia and come back to see us on vacation. We’re bigger than ever as we celebrate our fourth year in operation. We greatly appreciate the opportunity to have such a wonderful sponsor of our program.

Our activities for the coming year include a winter camping event, a snowboarding event, a weekend of shooting and Ventur-ing activities, white-water rafting, a rock climbing lock-in event at SportRock, sea kayaking, and we’re planning an early July week-long event at the Pamlico Sea Base in North Carolina. For more information and a copy of the crew’s calendar of monthly events and activities, write to us at [email protected].

Crew members learn the basics of tour kayaking before on the Shenandoah this fall.
