RST Hamfest - The Radio Society of Tucson held their Fall Classic Hamfest on September 29 in Tucson. The weather was perfect (Except for the Sun glaring into the eyes of all those en-route along 22nd Street) and a good turnout was enjoyed by all at the swap meet and VE testing, passing 7 new hams. Hourly prizes and Door prizes went to a few of the lucky ticket holders and everyone enjoyed the camaraderie and friendship of eyeball QSO's around their coffee and doughnuts.

ARRL Election For Section ManagerBeginning October 1st, the period of nominations for Section Manager for Arizona begins. Section Emergency Coordinator, Dennis Bietry KE7EJFAfter a summer of relenting heat, it appears that summer is finally over. This means that the public service season is beginning in at least the warmer climates of the state and have wrapped up in the cooler parts. There are a number of public service events scheduled around the state. Maricopa Countyalone has 34 events for hams to volunteer for. Public Service Events are the perfect way to practice andhone your disaster communications skills. Contact your local group and sign up for at least one this year. Remember, the only difference between a public service event and a real disaster is one is scheduled and one isn’t.

On October 3, there will be a National Emergency Alert Test. FEMA in coordination with the FCC, will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA). Sending the WEA test message will begin at 11:18 a.m. MST. The EAS message will be sent at 11:20 a.m. MST. This will be the first nationwide Presidential-level WEA test and cannot be opted out of. It’s also a great chance to make assure the alerts work on both your cell phones and weather radios.

Youth and Scouting, Tom Fagan K7DFThanks to Joe N2QOJ for submitting the following information.

For those of you who may want to know a little bit more about Operation On-Target, visit this link: http://www.bsaontarget.org/what-is-on-target

OPERATION ON TARGET was an official Varsity Scout high adventure activity until the Varsity Scouting program was discontinued on 1-Jan-2018. However the On Target event still lives on and is open to Scouts or anyone interested in participating. It is still scheduled annually for the 3rd Saturday in July &/or September (Arizona & New Mexico hold their Operation On Target event on the 3rd Saturdayin September and southern California participates in both July and September.

Scout teams across the country will choose mountain peaks to climb and from there they will use mirrors to signal each other. They will also talk to each other with ham radios or cell phones, creating a link between them and other teams that are participating. They then plot these contacts on a map."

As some of you may know, the U. S. Army Signal Corps utilized Heliograph system (invented by British Army) as a way to communicate while chasing Geronimo in the Southwest region. Now you know why Heliograph Peak is named as such.

I've attached two docs that have additional information. Just contact me directly if you can't download the attached files or use these links to download from the Cloud:https://www.dropbox.com/s/h1eariyejb2590m/The%20Heliograph.pdf?dl=1 https://www.dropbox.com/s/caw27oej5tyoa58/What%20Is%20On-Target.pdf?dl=1

Over the last few years, ham radio communications has been used by the Scouts to coordinate On-Target activity. Arizona is radio active and will be participating in Operation On-Target on ☢ ☢Saturday, September 15th.

HAM RADIO Operator RV’ers/Tenters...

What? Quartzfest© is an annual HAM Radio RV'ers Boondocking event which is held in late

January every year with dates coinciding with the Quartzsite Arizona "RV Show".

When? January 20th thru 26th of 2019 (make sure you add these important dates to your 2019

calendar)

Where? 7 miles south of Quartzsite Arizona - on US 95 at La Paz Valley Road

Who Can Attend? ANYONE! If you don't have your Amateur Radio Operators License yet, you’ll

be able to take your Amateur Radio Operators License Exams at Quartzfest©

Cost? FREE!!!!

Our Annual Amateur Radio “get together” is called "Quartzfest©" and is open to ALL to attend.

Quartzfest© is not a club, no officers, no budget, no dues and is not affiliated with any

organization..and is absolutely FREE!! During the week of Quartzfest©, RV's are everywhere across

the desert, as far as you can see..every make and model you can imagine!

There are hundreds of groups that meet in Quartzsite every year in different parts of the desert

who share like interests. Our group, Quartzfest©, started out in 1997 as just a few HAM RV’ers

getting together, camping in their RV's in the middle of the desert..no power, no restrooms, no

running water. Solar Panels and Generators are in use everywhere. If you want to see how well

you're prepared and how long you'll be able to hold out in the event of an emergency or disaster,

"Boondocking" in the desert for a week will show you.

Quartzfest© is similar to a Hamfest but lasts an entire week and is packed full of scheduled Seminars

and Activities. Talks range in topics from Genealogy and Crafts for Non-HAM's to Solar Power and

Battery Information, Technical information for the seasoned HAM, and introductory information for

the new HAM. Also included in the week's activities are VE Amateur Radio License Testing, Antenna

Shoot Out, Antenna Walkabout (touring other HAM's RV Antenna installations), Solar Walkabout,

4x4 Off Road Trip in the Desert, Prospecting, Campfires (some with musical entertainment), night

time movies, Pot Luck dinner, Hootenanny and lot's more!
