Teaching the Ethical Foundations of Economics Workshop
Why do we teach ethics in an economics class? The lessons pose
interesting questions about efficiency and equity in health care, the
meaning of justice, why ethical conduct is essential to the scientific
process, why markets need ethical standards, the moral limits of
markets, the ethics of sweatshop labor, the social responsibility of
business and the ethics of the sale of human organs. The active-
learning lessons help students develop critical-thinking skills necessary
to explore economic and public-policy issues within a wider moral
context.
Co-taught by:
John Morton - Former vice president of program development at the national Council for
Economic Education. He chaired the advisory board of The Wall Street Journal Classroom
Edition for nine years and has written over 40 widely used publications of instructional activities
for high school economics courses.
Jonathan Wight – Professor of Economics, Robins School of Business, University of
Richmond.
Professor Wight’s areas of expertise include ethics of capitalism, economics of globalization and
Adam Smith.

common? Everything... we hope! Join ACEE at this fun
interactive workshop that uses the tools of economics to explore
and analyze the world of dating.
How early is too early to ask a date to prom? Are diamonds

consumers on Valentine's Day? What's with all the super-star break-ups? And more!
From The Dating Game to dating apps... enjoy a trip down memory lane as we explore the
institutions that influenced dating then and now. Bring economics to life with fun activities,
video clips and examples your students can relate to. Arm them with the tools to make good
dating decisions. From marginal analysis, transaction costs, and diminishing returns to the sunk
cost fallacy, supply and demand, and even a Valentine's Day price index, this workshop has it
all. Give your students a Valentine's Day lesson - economics style!

Schemes and Scams: The credit industry, like any other
industry, has a few people who operate on the edge. Some of
these people are flat-out thieves. Others operate businesses that,
while completely legal, can put people who are already in
financial trouble into positions from which they will find it even
more difficult to recover. Not all financial scams and schemes
involve credit. Some deal with investments and jobs. They
appeal to your desire to make a bundle of cash overnight. This curriculum correlates with the

students graduating from college, this is a real world financial
literacy lesson aligned with the Arizona Career and College

books, supplies, room and board when budgeting? Do your
students understand the differences between a grant, scholarship
or loan and the requirements of each? What about the student-
debt dilemma, the six payback options, forgiveness, forbearance and deferments?

Economics in Action
This workshop is based on the publication Economics in Action:
14 Greatest Hits for Teaching High School Economics, available
in Virtual Economics. The philosophy behind the methodology is
stated in the following proverb: "I hear and I forget; I see and I
remember; I do and I understand." When students approach the
study of economics by doing something that challenges them to
use economic reasoning to examine economic behavior, they are
more likely to understand the concepts being taught.
In this workshop, six simulations such as "Why people trade", "Productivity", "The Invention
Convention", "The Circular Flow of Economic Activity", "Property rights" and "Money and
inflation" will be demonstrated.

Economic Freedom: Charting a Path to Prosperity
Studies reveal that economic freedom correlates with higher
economic growth, lower rates of poverty, higher life expectancy,
lower infant mortality, less public corruption, improved health
care, and political liberty. The world has become more
economically free in the last quarter century. The average
economic freedom score has increased by 20%.
In 2001 an estimated 2.7 billion people lived in moderate or extreme poverty. Now fewer than 2
billion people live in moderate or extreme poverty. The United Nations credits economic
freedom for most of these gains. Yet the role of economic freedom is rarely covered in high
school economics courses.
This workshop is designed to help you to incorporate economic freedom into your classes.

Health Care through an Economics Lens
How do we bring the current voter issues to the classroom? It
starts with introducing the students to understand the
economics behind these issues.
What are the costs of healthcare, who are the beneficiaries, and
who has a stake in it? Do you know that 26% of Arizonans have unpaid medical bills?
This workshop uses the basic principles of economics, such as: supply and demand, scarcity and
adverse selection, to review the history of health insurance, explain our current healthcare
situation, and see what may lie ahead. The workshop will empower you with more resources
to educate yourself and your children to understand the important issues around healthcare and
make more informed decisions.
Economist Cathleen Johnson researches and writes extensively on the theory of networks and
