Economics of the Film and Television Industry

What economic factors do television and film companies

consider when selecting film and TV show locations? Why aren't

Westerns filmed in Arizona anymore? In this highly engaging

workshop, participants will learn how states like Georgia--now

the #1 location for film and television production in the United

States--as well as New Mexico, Utah and Nevada are using tax

incentives, investments in infrastructure, increasing educational opportunities, and a friendly

business atmosphere to change the landscape of the industry. Participants will also look at the

broader national picture of film tax credits and how location decisions are made as well as the

actual economic impact a major motion picture can have on a local area. The workshop includes

Teaching the Ethical Foundations of Economics Workshop

Why do we teach ethics in an economics class? The lessons pose

interesting questions about efficiency and equity in health care, the

meaning of justice, why ethical conduct is essential to the scientific

process, why markets need ethical standards, the moral limits of

markets, the ethics of sweatshop labor, the social responsibility of

business and the ethics of the sale of human organs. The active-

learning lessons help students develop critical-thinking skills necessary

to explore economic and public-policy issues within a wider moral

context.

Co-taught by:

John Morton - Former vice president of program development at the national Council for

Economic Education. He chaired the advisory board of The Wall Street Journal Classroom

Edition for nine years and has written over 40 widely used publications of instructional activities

for high school economics courses.

Jonathan Wight – Professor of Economics, Robins School of Business, University of

Richmond.

Professor Wight’s areas of expertise include ethics of capitalism, economics of globalization and

Adam Smith.

David Schmidtz - Head of the Department of Political Economy and Moral Science at the

University of Arizona, Kendrick Professor of Philosophy, Eller Chair of Service-Dominant

Logic (College of Management), and editor in chief of the leading academic journal Social

The Economics of Dating

What do dating, economics and critical thinking have in

common? Everything... we hope! Join ACEE at this fun

interactive workshop that uses the tools of economics to explore

and analyze the world of dating.

How early is too early to ask a date to prom? Are diamonds

really a girl’s best friend? Should you date out of your league? Why do florists gouge romantic

consumers on Valentine's Day? What's with all the super-star break-ups? And more!

From The Dating Game to dating apps... enjoy a trip down memory lane as we explore the

institutions that influenced dating then and now. Bring economics to life with fun activities,

video clips and examples your students can relate to. Arm them with the tools to make good

dating decisions. From marginal analysis, transaction costs, and diminishing returns to the sunk

cost fallacy, supply and demand, and even a Valentine's Day price index, this workshop has it

all. Give your students a Valentine's Day lesson - economics style!

This workshop is best suited for middle and high school teachers with cross-disciplinary

applications in economics, personal finance, math, psychology and history.

Disney (including Pixar) animations provide some of the most

memorable scenes from childhood. This session will introduce

educators to a sampling of how Disney film clips

(e.g. Frozen, Up, Little Mermaid) relate to economics. The

scenes are short, targeted examples designed to illustrate a core

concept (e.g. supply and demand, financial planning and scarcity). We will also provide short

lesson plans for each scene.

SPECIAL TWO DAY ECONOMIC EDUCATION WORKSHOPS

Shark Tank: Turn your economics class into a real world

environment with your own “Shark Tank” competition. The

sharks in this workshop simulation are the students themselves

who have limited resources to satisfy the unlimited wants of their

entrepreneurial classmates. Teach about economic choices,

assessing the economy and business concepts of the real world.

Business plans, power points, and elevator clips to gain funds for

their ventures will be created and presented. Videos, rubrics and evaluation sheets will be

Schemes and Scams: The credit industry, like any other

industry, has a few people who operate on the edge. Some of

these people are flat-out thieves. Others operate businesses that,

while completely legal, can put people who are already in

financial trouble into positions from which they will find it even

more difficult to recover. Not all financial scams and schemes

involve credit. Some deal with investments and jobs. They

appeal to your desire to make a bundle of cash overnight. This curriculum correlates with the

Arizona Career and College Readiness standards and prepares your students for the real world.

asked you, “When am I going to use this in real life?” In this

workshop, we will introduce you to several resources that will

help you relate math and personal finance lessons to real issues

facing your students. Math in the Real World brings together the

expertise of math teachers and economics teachers to create

interdisciplinary lessons that teach important personal finance

and economic concepts in the context of math lessons. The

curriculum has also been used successfully by some special

education teachers.

The Hidden Costs and Benefits of College: With college loan

debt now exceeding credit card debt and the number of

students graduating from college, this is a real world financial

literacy lesson aligned with the Arizona Career and College

Readiness standards. What are the college costs besides tuition,

books, supplies, room and board when budgeting? Do your

students understand the differences between a grant, scholarship

or loan and the requirements of each? What about the student-

debt dilemma, the six payback options, forgiveness, forbearance and deferments?

personal finance concepts by playing Monopoly, Life, Awesome

My classroom economy integrates with your existing curriculum

in any subject to help students become savvy consumers and

roles to operate in a classroom economy. It is a simple classroom

school "dollars" so that they can rent their own desks. To earn a paycheck, they need to take on

classroom jobs. The material is appropriate for different grade levels using auction and

Economics in Action

This workshop is based on the publication Economics in Action:

14 Greatest Hits for Teaching High School Economics, available

in Virtual Economics. The philosophy behind the methodology is

stated in the following proverb: "I hear and I forget; I see and I

remember; I do and I understand." When students approach the

study of economics by doing something that challenges them to

use economic reasoning to examine economic behavior, they are

more likely to understand the concepts being taught.

In this workshop, six simulations such as "Why people trade", "Productivity", "The Invention

Convention", "The Circular Flow of Economic Activity", "Property rights" and "Money and

inflation" will be demonstrated.

Economic Freedom: Charting a Path to Prosperity

Studies reveal that economic freedom correlates with higher

economic growth, lower rates of poverty, higher life expectancy,

lower infant mortality, less public corruption, improved health

care, and political liberty. The world has become more

economically free in the last quarter century. The average

economic freedom score has increased by 20%.

In 2001 an estimated 2.7 billion people lived in moderate or extreme poverty. Now fewer than 2

billion people live in moderate or extreme poverty. The United Nations credits economic

freedom for most of these gains. Yet the role of economic freedom is rarely covered in high

school economics courses.

Health Care through an Economics Lens

How do we bring the current voter issues to the classroom? It

starts with introducing the students to understand the

economics behind these issues.

What are the costs of healthcare, who are the beneficiaries, and

who has a stake in it? Do you know that 26% of Arizonans have unpaid medical bills?

This workshop uses the basic principles of economics, such as: supply and demand, scarcity and

adverse selection, to review the history of health insurance, explain our current healthcare

situation, and see what may lie ahead. The workshop will empower you with more resources

to educate yourself and your children to understand the important issues around healthcare and

make more informed decisions.

Economist Cathleen Johnson researches and writes extensively on the theory of networks and
