Monitor flow through open channels, partially full sewer pipes andsurcharged pipes a flume or weir. Ideal for municipalstormwater, combined effluent, raw sewage and irrigation water.
The AVFM 5.0 uses a submerged ultrasonic sensor to continuouslymeasure both Velocity and Level in the channel. The sensorresists fouling, corrosion and abrasion. The flowmeter can beconfigured with the standard submerged velocity-level sensor, orwith submerged velocity plus a separate non-contacting ultrasoniclevel sensor.

Optional 2-Million Point Data Logger
The AVFM 5.0 Area-Velocity FlowMeter measures both Level andVelocity to calculate flow in an openchannel or pipe. Calibration is simple:enter the pipe diameter or channeldimensions and the AVFM 5.0automatically computes and displaysflow volume.
The ultrasonic sensor mounts inside the pipe or on the bottom of a channel with a stainless steel mountingbracket (included) and a single screw into the bottom of the pipe or channel. No special compounds, tools orhardware are required. The sensor is completely sealed with orifices or ports.no
The standard sensor measures both velocity and level with a singlesubmerged probe. It is installed in the pipe or channel floor with thestainless steel mounting bracket (supplied), or mounted with anoptional stainless steel band for round pipes. Alternate sensor modelsare available for special applications: a separate non-contactingultrasonic level sensor with a submerged velocity sensor. Sensorcable can be extended up to 500 ft (150 m).
Careful selection of sensor mounting location results in best performance and maintenance-free operation.
The channel should not have drops or direction changes immediately upstream of the sensor mounting location.Pipe or channel slope should not exceed 3%.
Choose the built-in data logger option if you want the AVFM 5.0 to store time and date-stamped flow values at 10 second to 60 minute intervals.
Transfer log files to any USB flash drive just by connectingto the logger's USB output. Windows software is included to display log files in graph andtable formats, change measurement units and generate flow reports. Export data to
Excel.
Avoid locationswhere sediment builds up.
will result when the water is not highly turbulent and where velocity is evenly distributed across thechannel.
The AVFM 5.0 can measure forward flow velocity up to 20 ft/sec (6 m/sec) and reverse flow up to 5 ft/sec (1.5 m/sec). Theelectronics and software sample and average flow rates continuously to provide stable readings. The submergedvelocity/level sensor will measure flow in partially full and surcharged pipes with pressure up to 10 psi. No special set-upor adjustment is required. Minimum recommended pipe diameter is 6” (150 mm).
Calibrate the AVFM 5.0 for installation in irregular or compound channel shapesby entering the channel width at multiple level points through a .Channels of virtually any shape can be monitored with your choice ofmeasurement units.

The Township of South Glengarry in EasternOntario discharges continuously from their 72,000m3 sewage lagoon. But they ran into flowmeasurement problems when their magneticflowmeter was unable to detect seasonal low flowrates.
Operations Manager, Shawn Killoran selected aGreyline AVFM 5.0 Area-Velocity Flow Monitorbecause it was simple to install in a horizontaldischarge pipe from the lagoon and because itcould accurately detect and monitor the full rangeof flow rates up to 3,800 m3/D.
Township operators liked the Greyline AVFM 5.0datalogger reporting system where formatted flowreports (total, minimum, maximum and average)could be downloaded automatically to a USBmemory stick without carrying a laptop to the site.
The AVFM 5.0 flowmeter electronics were AC-powered and installed in an insulated shed alongwith a sampler.
The sealed ultrasonic flow sensor was mountedthrough a tee section at the invert of the
pipe and. A stainless
steel bracket was screwed into the pipe to securethe sensor in place.
After several months of operation, no algae, sediment or weed build-up was observed on thesensor. But the mounting location was fitted witha removable cover to allow periodic cleaning ifrequired.
