Area of Concern Needs Assessment Projects – Action Plan Evaluation Competency addressed

The leadership and organization of the Black History Program.

The Black History Program needs a staff member to work in conjunction with the principal to co-chair the adult committee in organizing, planning, rehearsing, and performing the annual cultural celebration.

Begin by recruiting staff members to be on the committee. Then hold adult committee meetings to plan dates, themes, rehearsal schedules, and assign duties within the committee. Next, hold student tryouts, assign staff members to work with various acts, and conduct rehearsals. Then, come back together as a group to have dress rehearsals and finalize everything for the program. Finally, hold the program for three different performances during the school day and one larger, more complex performance at night for the community.

The program was wonderful! The students, parents, staff, and community were all impressed at the work, dedication, and talent of all the students in the program. There was one misstep. In the beginning stages of planning when various adults were assigned or volunteered to be responsible for certain aspects of the program, every job was assigned. However, in the end, there were a small group of people who had to complete extra tasks because some other staff members did not come through with their assignments. In the future, I would make a committee-wide list of duties and distribute that to everyone so that no one is unclear of their responsibilities.
