5.3.5 Research Projects of the Programme
Research projects leading to the doctoral degree correspond to the strategic plans of the Faculty, Mahidol University, Ministry of Education and the country, respectively. These include basic and applied medical science related to tropical diseases and public health. The researches then cover laboratory and field disciplined. In terms of laboratory investigation the research involves for examples pathophysiology of severe malaria insecticide susceptibility, development of diagnosis kits and vaccines for tropical diseases serotyping of malaria and DNA Bank of mosquito vectors in Thailand. Field investigation covers epidemiology of tropical diseases and application of geographical information system in medical health science and well as the study of social-behavioral and environmental impacts on tropical diseases and other public health problems.

World Health Organization Research Training Grants (WHO/RTG)
2.1 Research Training Grants for Applied Field Research and Biostatistics (RTGs) RTGs are awarded for studies leading to the acquisition of postgraduate
degrees or specialized skills in disciplines related to applied field research, such as epidemiology, social sciences, biostatistics, health education and communication, and health economics, or in research related to health interventions. TDR particularly encourages applications for graduate training in applied biostatistics from persons currently employed in multidisciplinary research groups. Training may take place in the home country, a DEC, or in a developed country. TDR reserves the right to select the institution, research programme, or TDR-funded Research and Development (R&D) project where it is felt the most suitable training can be obtained. For further information and application forms, contact Dr. Fabio Zicker at the address below or Email: [email protected]
2.2 Research Training Grants (RTGs) RTGs will be awarded for the pursuit of studies leading to the acquisition
of a post-graduate degree or for acquiring specialized skills in disciplines such as molecular biology, immunology, parasitology, clinical pharmacology or synthetic chemistry. TDR also encourages training in disciplines related to applied field research, such as epidemiology, biostatistics, health education and communication, health economics and the social sciences. The training may take place in the home country, in other developing countries, or in developed countries. TDR reserves the right to recommend the institutions, research programmes, or TDR Research and Development (R&D) projects where the most suitable training can be obtained. Data gathering overseas
Students may collect thesis data in their home country. Approval of the
Thesis Advisory Committee is required. Students are to provide their plan and duration of overseas data gathering, and provide 3-monthly reports to the Thesis Advisory Committee. The Advisory Committee is responsible for finding someone in the foreign country to be co-advisor during this time.
Funding support for the above is not available. If the co-advisor is unable to come to Thailand for the thesis examinations, he/she can send questions for use in the examination.
Should the ehcial consideration is involved, Mahidol University will transfer this responsibility to the Ethics Committee in the country of data collection. Student, however, have to inform the Faculty of Tropical Medicine of such ethical approval.
