The Weavers transformative legacy gift brought others to the giving table.When Wayne and Delores Barr Weaver sat down to discuss a gift to Baptist Health in 2012, there were a lot of options on the table. But when the Weavers learned that there was a tremendous need to expand behavioral health care for children and adolescents in Jacksonville, they were “all in.” They made a record gift of $10 million dollars and issued a challenge to the behavioral health team at Baptist — enhance care and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health.

There are many barriers to providing high-quality, comprehensive mental health care to children and adolescents, but adequate funding is often at the top of the list. Providing the required wraparound services to appropriately address pediatric behavioral health issues is often stymied by a lack of funding. But in any given year, one in five American children will show signs or symptoms of a mental health disorder. More alarming, nearly 80 percent of children who need mental health services won’t get them due to lack of insurance or limited access to community services.

Furthermore, the stigma surrounding mental health often stops families from seeking care.

Delores Barr Weaver can relate to such stigma of a different sort. Her mother, Claudia Adams Barr, a Georgia native and homemaker, succumbed to cancer at the age of 47. Weaver was only 20 when her mother died on October 2, 1957. Back then, people didn’t talk openly about cancer. They only whispered about it, were afraid of it and there was shame connected to it. Sounds like mental health today.

Thirty years after her mother’s untimely passing, Weaver was able to come to terms with that crushing loss by making a major gift to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in her mother’s memory. The Claudia Adams Barr Program in Innovative Basic Cancer Research is widely recognized as one of the largest and most successful programs of its kind.

Since 2012, the J. Wayne and Delores Barr Weaver Legacy Endowment has improved access for children and adolescents who would have normally been placed on a waiting list for mental health services. For example, instead of waiting up to two years for a diagnosis of autism, Baptist Behavioral Health can see pediatric patients within a fraction of that time to provide that all-important early intervention.

Over the past five years, the Weaver Legacy endowment has helped, among other things, fund a fellowship position, launch a stigma reduction initiative featuring a Jacksonville Jaguars player, support community clinics, and improve psychiatric accessibility so that children and adolescents can achieve consistent session time with their therapists. Last year, the Weaver Legacy Endowment helped launch the Wolfson Children’s Behavioral Health Center — a place of healing and hope that specializes in caring for the mental health needs of children. The center includes a licensed social worker to coordinate support services for in-patients nearing discharge, and a unique education liaison specialist to serve as an advocate for patients enrolled in local public schools.


Since 2014, the Weaver Legacy Endowment has served more than 4,000 children, and provided nearly 9,000 psychiatric sessions. It also funds a year-round Youth Mental Health First Aid training course that is free to the public. The two-day, eight-hour course, teaches adults how to assist adolescents going through a mental health crisis. Graduates of the program earn a three-year certification and form the first line of defense in dealing with the stigma surrounding adolescent mental illness. To date, 4,000 people have completed the training.

Hugh Greene, President and CEO of Baptist Health, calls behavioral health “a vital community need,” adding that the Baptist Health board of directors is committed to develop the most comprehensive behavioral programs in the region, despite the lack of reimbursement for these services. Since then, seven more behavioral health endowments have been created, with the total endowment now at $19 million.

The Weaver Legacy Endowment generates perpetual funding for programs in pediatric and adolescent behavioral health that are designed to decrease the stigma associated with seeking help. The $10 million gift was the catalyst for creating, as never before, an increased awareness for children and adolescent mental health in our area and continues a powerful partnership that the Weavers established with Baptist shortly after they moved to the area nearly a quarter of a century ago.

1. Abigail’s Joy Developmental Pediatrics Center – Established in 2016 by Ed and Marlene White, Steve and Cathy Auld, and Auld & White Constructors in honor of the White’s granddaughter, Abigail, to support Developmental Pediatrics programs and services at Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

2. Steven Vaughan Adams Cardiology – Established in 2017 by Leinesa and Kenneth Adams, MD, to provide programs and services that support adult cardiology within the Baptist Health System.

3. Adolescent Behavioral Health – Chris and Cindy Ware established this fund in 2017 to be used for research, programs, services and treatment related to adolescent depression and behavioral health at Wolfson Children’s Hospital and Baptist Health.

4. AgeWell Development Council – In 2016, AgeWell Development Council member Vince Ferrigno, along with friends and council members, established this fund to support geriatric training and education, program innovation and patient care activity within the Baptist Health AgeWell Institute.

5. Alexandre J. Allaire Pastoral Care – Established in 2013 by the Allaire Family, the purpose of this endowment is to support activities of the Roman Catholic ministry of patients while in the hospital.

6. Rue Andeer Music Therapy – Established in 2016 in honor of Rue Andeer to support the music therapy program at Wolfson Children’s Hospital which minimizes the stress associated with hospitalization and helps children reach their physical, psychological, developmental and emotional goals.

7. Grace Andersen Pet Visitation – This fund was established in 2015 by Grace Andersen to support the animal visitation program at Baptist Jacksonville. The fund will provide supplies and training resources for pet therapy volunteers, veterinary care and tools for pet therapy teams.

8. Shirley Anderson – Established in 2007 by John K. Anderson Jr. and friends, in memory of his wife, this gift is part of the Community Health Initiative and supports the Tipping the Scale program, an adolescent advocacy and intervention mentoring program. Most students who participate graduate from high school and either enroll in college, the military or become employed.

9. Dr. George Armstrong Congenital Heart Fund for Grenada – This fund was established in 2015 by Patrons of the Hearts to support the evaluation and treatment of children in Grenada who suffer from congenital heart disease and are treated by the pediatric cardiology clinical team at Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

10. J.B. Arp Cystic Fibrosis – This endowment was established in 2000 by Margie and Norman Reuben in memory of their son. The gift supports and enhances services for cystic fibrosis patients at Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

11. Claudia L. and Charles C. Baggs Family Cancer – In 2015, the Baggs created this fund to support cancer patient care and research through the Baptist Health/MD Anderson partnership, with preference given to melanoma.

12. Martha and Tom Baker Pastoral Care Counseling Intern – This gift was established by the Bakers in 2015 to provide the annual salary and operations support for pastoral care counseling interns.

13. Baptist Health General – Cornelia S. Meyers established this fund in 2014 to support health system patient services that are not adequately reimbursed or sustainable.

We are truly grateful for our community’s incredible support of Baptist Health. It is your

generosity that allows us to provide high quality care for children, the frail elderly and

everyone in between. For more than 60 years our doors have been open to everyone

in our community, regardless of their ability to pay. In September 2017, Baptist Health

reached $150 million in endowments — an incredible illustration of how, through

14. Baptist Health/MD Anderson Cancer Care – This fund was established in 2015 by Joan and Preston Haskell through the Haskell Foundation to provide support for all aspects of cancer care related to the Baptist Health/ MD Anderson partnership. Mr. Haskell was a longtime health system board member and fundraising volunteer.

15. Baptist Health Neurological Institute – Martina and Ricardo Hanel, MD, along with Elizabeth Rodriguez and Eric Sauvageau, MD, established this fund in 2015 for the support and expansion of programs and services that include new technologies, telemedicine, education fellowships and other academic medical programs.

16. Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Education and Research – This endowment was established to support educational and research activities at Baptist Jacksonville related to the Baptist Health/MD Anderson partnership.

17. Baptist MD Anderson Golf Classic Medical Director’s Fund – Established in 2016 with proceeds from the Baptist MD Anderson Golf Classic, this fund supports the Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Medical Director’s Endowment, which provides funding for a variety of priorities including patient care, research, recruitment, innovative health care technologies, educational activities/needs and emerging priorities, as determined by the BMDA medical director.

18. Baptist Medical Center Auxiliary – Established in 1995 by the hospital’s auxiliary volunteers, this endowment was created to support special needs at Baptist Jacksonville. The proceeds from purchases made in the hospital gift shops fund this endowment.

19. Baptist Medical Center Beaches – Established in 1995, this gift benefits various services and projects for community health care and other related needs, such as capital and equipment, at Baptist Beaches.

20. Baptist Medical Center Beaches AgeWell – In 2017, Ernie and Rita Bono established this fund to support geriatric training and education, program innovation and patient care within AgeWell at Baptist Beaches.

21. Baptist Medical Center Beaches Pastoral Care – Established in 2012 by Marian Derfer, the purpose of this endowment is to support the pastoral care program at Baptist Beaches. Mrs. Derfer is a strong advocate for health care in the community and through this endowment, she hopes to enhance the level of care available to residents in the Beaches area.

22. Baptist Medical Center General – This endowment, established in 1995, supports specific programs, departmental needs and various equipment purchases at Baptist Jacksonville.

23. Baptist Medical Center Nassau – In 1995, this fund was established to support specific equipment needs to benefit patients at Baptist Nassau.

24. Baptist Primary Care – This fund was established in 2015 by primary care physicians, hospitalists and team members of Baptist Primary Care to support patient service enhancements in the areas of care transition, population health management, technology improvements and education.

25. Barco and Rollinson Families AgeWell @ Home – In 2016, this fund was established by the Barco Family Foundation and Jane and Brad Rollinson to support a variety of services including staff training, home-based primary care, telehealth technologies and home support not covered by insurance.

26. Kenneth W. Barwick, MD, Lab – In 2001, Dr. Barwick’s colleagues, coworkers and friends established this memorial gift to show their appreciation for his years of service and support to the Baptist Jacksonville Laboratory. This gift provides laboratory staff with opportunities for continuing their education and provides necessary equipment and supplies for their daily operations.

27. Evan Patrick Bell – This endowment was established in 2009 by Pat and Rick Bell in memory of their son, Evan Bell. The fund was used to create “Evan’s Room,” a teen room at Wolfson Children’s Hospital on the hematology/oncology floor, and continues to provide necessary maintenance and upgrades to the room, and support other needs of the pediatric cancer program.

28. Bergson Family AgeWell – This fund was established in 2015 by Janet and Paul Bergson with the purpose of supporting inpatient and outpatient programs, focusing on addressing the complex needs of the geriatric patient population for the Baptist AgeWell Institute at Baptist Beaches.

29. Betty and David Berkman – Established by the Berkmans in 2015, this fund provides for a dedicated cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation space and program at Baptist Nassau.

30. Carey Bishop – In 2001, the Bishop Family established this endowment in memory of their son, Carey. This endowment helped create the Safe Kids Water Safety Program, which provides swimming, safety education and accident-related care to Wolfson Children’s Hospital patients and their families.

31. Bishop Family Pediatric Neurology – Benham and Henry Bishop established this fund in 2015 to support pediatric neurology programs and services for patients at Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

32. Paula and Dennis Blackburn Neurosurgery Education – In 2014, Paula and Dennis Blackburn established this fund to support the education and training needs of the neurosurgery clinical staff.

33. Sheldon B. Boney – Established in 1997 by her husband, Paisley Boney III, and friends to honor Mrs. Boney’s memory and service as a resident chaplain, the purpose of this gift is to provide scholarships for students in the Baptist Health chaplaincy program. Because of this fund, services have extended past the traditional inpatient care and into home health and hospice services.

34. Paul and Kathy Bosland Community Health – Established in 2016 by long time Baptist Health Foundation trustee Paul Bosland and his wife, Kathy, to support community health and wellness activities for Baptist Nassau.

35. Bott Family Advanced Nursing Scholarship – Established by long-time friends of Baptist Health Jerry and Susan Bott in 2017 to provide scholarship support for advanced nursing programs at Baptist Medical Center Beaches.

Bradbury for the Medically Complex Child at UF – This fund was established in 2014 by The Bradbury Family Charitable Foundation to support the Bower Lyman Center for the Medically Complex Child, which serves as a medical home for children with complex medical conditions, particularly those who are dependent on medical technology to survive. The Center offers children a coordinated, family-focused, team-based approach to provide the highest quality of life possible.

40. Bryan Family – Chris and Bill Bryan established this endowment in 2014 to provide funds to support continuing education, as well as other types of professional development for employees at Baptist Nassau.

41. Cancer Center – This endowment was established in 1995 to help fund the operations of the Edna Sproull Williams Cancer Center. Funds are also used to purchase equipment and technology to fight cancer.

42. Cardiac Services – This fund, established in 1995, supports the cardiac catheterization lab at Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville.

43. Dr. Hugh A. Carithers – Established in 2009 by Drs. Mobeen Rathore and Thomas Chiu, this endowment supports an annual lecture on infectious disease for Jacksonville pediatricians.

44. Cavert Legacy Fund – In 2015, The Women’s Board established this fund to support the operating needs of the Women’s Board of Wolfson Children’s Hospital in honor of its founder, Ellen Cavert.

45. Drs. E. Ceithaml and W. Marvin Jr. – In 1997, this endowment was established by Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Jones Jr. to honor the work of Drs. Ceithaml and Marvin in pediatric cardiology and cardiovascular surgery. The purpose of this fund is to enhance the pediatric cardiology program and care patients receive at Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

46. Lynn and Thomas Chapman Cardiology Charity Fund – Established in 2017 by Lynn and Thomas Chapman to provide funds and resources for Baptist Jacksonville cardiology patients who cannot afford expenses directly related to medical treatment and care, with preference for electrophysiology patients.

47. Charity Care – This fund was established in 2014 to support Baptist Health patients who cannot afford to pay for their own health care.

Child Abuse Prevention and Victim Support at Wolfson Children’s – This fund was established in 2014 by Hospital President Michael Aubin and his wife, Hillary, to support child abuse prevention programs and services at Wolfson Children’s Hospital, including the treatment and support of victims of child abuse and neglect.

49. Childhood Cancer Research – Established in 2014, this endowment was created in partnership with Nemours Children’s Specialty Clinic to support pediatric cancer research, as well as pediatric fellowships in oncology and hematology at Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

50. Christopher’s Fund – The Christopher Edwards Foundation established this fund in 2015 to provide a dedicated cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation space and program at Baptist Nassau.

51. Cimarrone LGA Pink Ribbon Cancer – The RITA Foundation established this fund in 2017 to support women’s cancer programs at Baptist Medical Center South.

52. Clements Family Behavioral Health Fellowship – In 2015, this fund was established by Poppy and Robert Clements to provide support for the Clements Family Fellowship at Wolfson Children’s Hospital, specifically with the inpatient and outpatient counseling programs in behavioral health.

53. Blanche and Luther Coggin Baptist MD Anderson – The Coggins established this fund in 2015 for the Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center Medical Director. The gift will be used to provide support for patient care, research, equipment, construction and renovations, lectures and clinical staff recruitment and education.

54. Betty P. Cook – Established in 1997, this gift funds the areas of most need with an emphasis on scholarships for continuing education for health care professionals at Baptist Nassau. Ms. Cook was a nurse in Nassau County for many years and had a strong desire to promote advancements in education for nurses in the area.

55. Melvyne and Edgar Cooper – This endowment was established in 1999 with the purpose of supporting the Clinical Pastoral Education program, which trains hospital chaplains. Dr. Cooper was a minister in the Jacksonville community for many years and served on the Baptist Medical Center Board from 1971 to 2001.

56. Tom Coughlin Jay Fund for Oncology Patients – Established in 2016 by the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund to support programs and services that enhance the quality of life for cancer patients and their families at Wolfson Children’s.

57. Diane Lynne Crawford – In 1999, this endowment was established to support research and assist with equipment and technology purchases, and provide advanced training to nurses in pediatric cardiology. This fund was created by Toni and Andy Crawford in memory of their daughter.

58. Crittenden Family Newborn Intensive Care Unit – This fund was established in 2014 by the Crittenden Family to support the special needs of the patients and families of the newborn intensive care unit at Wolfson Children’s Hospital.




59. Del and Peggy Dallas Chair in Breast Cancer Care – In 2017, Debbie and Sutton McGehee established the Del and Peggy Dallas Chair in Breast Cancer Care in memory of her parents to support patient care, research, innovation technologies, recruitment, Fellowships and continuing medical education of clinicians under the direction of the Medical Director of Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center.

60. Stephen J. Dandridge Pediatric Nursing – Established in 2008, this endowment provides scholarships to pediatric nursing students, with preference given to nurses serving in the pediatric cancer program. The endowment was created by Bernie and Martha Dandridge in memory of their son.

61. Joseph H. and Amy Q. Davis Pastoral Care – This endowment was established in 2016 by Mr. and Mrs. Davis for the use and benefit of supporting pastoral care and clinical pastoral education at Baptist South.

62. John M. and Marian M. Derfer – This fund was established in 2008 by Mrs. Derfer in memory of her husband. With a strong desire to enhance the health care available to Beaches residents, she created the fund to support scholarships for nurses at Baptist Beaches.

63. Albert H. and Ruth Reid Desnoyers – This endowment was established in 2014 by Albert H. Desnoyers in memory of his wife, Ruth Reid Desnoyers. This fund supports education and research in cardiac disease prevention, wellness, intervention and rehabilitation programs at Baptist Nassau.

64. Diaz Family/Savannah Beach Pediatric Oncology – Mike and Kelly Diaz established this fund in 2015 to support pediatric oncology patients and their families. The fund was named in honor of pediatric cancer patient Savannah Beach, a friend of the Diaz Family.

65. AJ Donohue – Established in 2007 by the late AJ and his parents, Terrilyn and Bill, this endowment supports scholarships for pediatric nurses in the oncology unit. It was AJ’s request that a portion of the money be used to purchase reclining chairs, bedside lights and CD players, to help make the rooms more comfortable for families staying at the hospital with their children.

66. T. O’Neal and Alice Douglas – Established in 1997 by Mr. Douglas, former chair of the Baptist Health Board of Directors (1986-1994), and his wife, this gift expands Baptist’s role as a provider of critical services in the community. The fund is part of the Community Health Initiative and has supported various Wolfson Children’s Hospital needs, provided books for the Library for Healing and supported the Tipping the Scale mentoring program, as well as The Bridge of Northeast Florida. The Douglases have committed a $500,00 estate gift toward this endowment.

67. Duval Ford Critical Needs – In 1999, this endowment was established to support the families of Wolfson Children’s Hospital patients who are in financial distress. The fund provides services and supplies, such as prosthetics and rehabilitation equipment, to children whose families would otherwise be unable to afford them.

68. Dr. and Mrs. Robert G. Ellison Jr. Nursing Education – The Ellisons established this fund in 2014 to support nursing education needs for Baptist Jacksonville. Dr. Ellison and his wife, Penny, a registered nurse, made this gift to show their appreciation of nurses and the work they do.

69. Emans Family Patient Care – In 2014, Christopher Emans established this endowment to support Baptist Medical Center South patients and families who are experiencing financial hardships.

70. Emergency Care – This fund, established in 1995, is comprised of several gifts that support emergency care services. Funds are used to purchase equipment and technology and to support other necessities that help elevate the level of emergency care we provide for our patients.

71. Emergency Department Excellence – Physicians of Emergency Resources Group (ERG) established this fund in 2015 to support the education, equipment and programmatic needs of the Emergency Departments across Baptist Health. Additional support may be given to areas of need within the health system as deemed appropriate.

72. Endocrinology/Diabetic Education – This fund was established in 2014 by the William and Sally Green Family Foundation to support needs within the endocrinology area, with preference for needs in diabetes education.

FAMU/Baptist Health Nursing Student – This fund was established in 2015 by the Florida A&M University Foundation to provide nursing students with clinical rotations/preceptorships at Baptist Health hospitals, which includes covering costs for travel, housing, meals, tuition and other related expenses.

74. Paul W. Farrell II, MD, Cardiology Staff for Quality Care – Established by Paul and Karen Farrell in 2016 to provide educational training for cardiovascular nurses, cath lab technicians, and other cardiology staff who care for patients at Baptist Jacksonville.

75. Linda and Bill Farthing Cerebrovascular Lecture Series – This fund was established by the Farthings in 2015 to bring visiting endovascular neurosurgeons to Baptist Health to work with physicians and fellows on the latest techniques and equipment for brain surgery.

76 Mary Virginia Faulkner Pastoral Care – Established in 2014 by Jack S. Faulkner and family in memory of Mary Virginia, the purpose of this fund is to support pastoral care at Baptist South.

77. Ferrigno-Erhard – In 2008, Vince and Linda Ferrigno established this fund in honor of Dr. Michael Erhard, a pediatric urologist at Wolfson Children’s Hospital. The endowment helps improve the quality of life for children living with spina bifida by sending them to special camps and to ease the financial burden their families face due to the costs of therapy and special equipment.

78. Linda M. and Vincent R. Ferrigno – The Ferrignos established this endowment in 2013 to support the Bike-A-Bility program at Wolfson Children’s Hospital. The program supports children in the Rehabilitation Department by providing specialized bikes to assist with their therapy.

92. Lindsay Ghiloni Memorial – Peter and Joanne Ghiloni, as well as their family and friends, established this fund in 2015 in memory of Lindsay to support Baptist Beaches patients who have a family history of breast cancer and require assistance to receive the genetic testing for the BRACA gene.

98. Susan and A. Hugh Greene Behavioral Health – Established in 2011 by the Greenes, this gift supports the operating and capital expenses of the behavioral health program. Mr. Greene is currently president and CEO of Baptist Health, and both he and Mrs. Greene are strong advocates for mental health care throughout the region.

99. Gresham, Smith & Partners Healing Environments – In 2016, this fund was created to provide support for the enhancement and maintenance of hospital gardens, natural spaces, and holistic programs that help to promote an environment of healing and well-being at Baptist South.

Gunn for Nursing Education – Established by Elizabeth Gunn in 2015, this fund provides nursing scholarships for Baptist South, with preference given to team members who are pursuing degrees in nursing as a second career and also supports those who are pursuing their bachelor’s or advanced degree in nursing.

102. Hall-Halliburton Family Support Services – In 2014, the Hall-Halliburton Foundation established this fund to support Child Life and other non-reimbursed support services for patients and families at Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

104. M.C. Harden Jr. Cardiology – To honor his father, M.C. “Ceree” Harden III and friends created this fund in 1995 to support education, research and advancements in the treatment of heart disease. 105. Healthy Living Initiative – Established in 2014 by Zimmerman Boulos and family, this endowment will be used to promote healthy lifestyles for youth and adults who participate in Baptist Health’s Healthy Living initiative. The goal is to educate current and future generations about the benefits of healthy living, thus reducing health risks such as diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity.

106. A. and V. Hein for Child Life at Wolfson Children’s – In honor of her family’s legacy, Ruth Shugart established this gift in 2015 to support the Child Life programs and services that provide help and assistance for children and families at Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

Margaret and Robert Hill Jr. Behavioral Health – Established in 2015 by the Hills, the purpose of this fund is to support children, adolescents and adults with behavioral health needs through licensed psychologists. The gift will also provide the funds for continuing education, as well as the needs of PhD level fellowships.

108. Trinity Love Hoblit Foundation – Established in 2016 by Philip and Olivia Hoblit in memory of their daughter, Trinity, to support neuroscience research for pediatrics and adults at Wolfson Children’s Hospital and Baptist Neurological Institute.

129. Jim Mayo Chaplaincy – Established in 2011, this gift supports all aspects of Spiritual Care at Baptist Nassau. Mr. Mayo was the inaugural president of Baptist Nassau, serving from 1994 until he retired in 2011.

130. Jennifer and Michael A. Mayo Nursing Education – This fund was established in 2015 by the Mayos to support nursing education needs for BMC Jacksonville.

131. Mary D. and Robert M. McConnell Jr. – This endowment was established in 2000 by the McConnells with the purpose of supporting the needs of Wolfson Children’s Hospital patients. Funds have gone towards the purchase of critically needed equipment, and helped children in the speech and language disorder program, whose families could not otherwise afford treatment.

132. Frank B. Miller – Linda Moore and her family created this endowment in 2000 in memory of Mr. Miller to support pediatric health care. Funds provide ongoing education to medical and nursing staff, support research initiatives, provide care to children with critical needs who are lacking access due to financial hardship, and more specifically, support children undergoing correction of cleft palate deformities.

133. Miller Electric for Technology – Miller Electric Company established this endowment in 2014 to provide equipment and material required to enhance technology for both medical and information purposes throughout Baptist Health.

134. Robert H. Miller Pediatric Cardiology Research and Education – Established in 1995 in honor of Robert H. Miller, MD, by Mr. and Mrs. Hugh H. Jones Jr., this endowment is used to provide continuing education opportunities for the pediatric cardiology group and cardiology research projects.

135. J. Walker Mizell Family Support – This fund was established by Carrie and Adam Mizell in 2014 to support patients and families at Wolfson Children’s Hospital who are experiencing financial hardship.

136. Katy and Yung Moon – Established in 1997 by the Moons, this endowment supports the needs of pediatric cardiology. Funds from this endowment have been used to purchase equipment such as an EKG machine and cardiac ultrasound machine to treat children with heart problems.

137. Mori, Bean & Brooks Advanced Medical Imaging – Mori, Bean & Brooks established this fund in 2014 to support the Buddy Bus program for diagnostic/interventional breast imaging services.

138. Myers Family Gynecology Surgery – This fund was established in 2015 by Dr. and Mrs. Richard Myers along with Matthew Myers to provide funding for gynecology surgery at Baptist South. Funds will be used to enhance nursing and technician skills in gynecologic surgery through continuing education, certification, conference attendance, workshops and seminars, as well as gynecologic surgical equipment.

139. NAIFA Jacksonville – This endowment was established in 1999 by the Jacksonville Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (JAIFA) to help purchase cutting-edge technology to support the critical needs of children at Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

140. Newton Family Spirituality Fund – This fund was established in 2016 by Joannie Newton to attract, train and retain outstanding spiritual care professionals, help renovate/construct key spaces, and educate patients, family and friends about the connections between spiritual care and healing at the Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center.

141. OB Services – In 1995, this fund was established to support staff education and necessary materials for the OB/GYN Department. The funds continue to enhance the level of care the medical and nursing staffs are able to provide to our patients.

142. Jane L. and William C. O’Malley Family Cardiac Rehab – Established in 2016 to provide a dedicated cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation space and program support at Baptist Nassau.



143. Mildred Caldwell O’Neal Baptist Beaches Nursing Scholarship – Established in 2013 by Mr. and Mrs. Jay Faulkner, this gift supports scholarships for nurses at Baptist Beaches.

144. Deborah Pass Durham Hospital Presidents Fund at Wolfson Children’s – This fund was established by Delores M. Kesler in 2015 in honor of her daughter Deborah’s dedication and service as a past chair of the Wolfson Children’s board.

145. Patrons of the Hearts – Established in 2007, the purpose of this endowment is to bring children from underdeveloped countries to Wolfson Children’s Hospital for treatment of their complex congenital heart problems. Since its inception in 2006, Patrons of the Hearts has provided life-saving cardiac procedures and surgeries to many children worldwide.

146. Patrons of the Hearts Specialty Physician Services Professorship – This endowment was established in 2014 to provide physician care services for children with congenital heart conditions from underdeveloped countries who are treated at Wolfson Children’s. The endowment supports physician education and other costs related to cardiac surgery, anesthesia and cardiology for these patients.

147. Pediatric Cardiovascular Intensive Care – In 2015, Howard Korman and Jacksonville Greyhound Racing established this fund to support the pediatric cardiovascular intensive care needs at Wolfson Children’s.

148. Pediatric Genetic and Molecular Medicine – This fund was established in 2015 by Roseann Duran, vice chair of the Wolfson Children’s Hospital Board, to support the genetics and molecular medicine programs and services for children treated at Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

149. Pediatric Medication Support – Established in 2017 by Scott Wooten to provide financial support to cover pediatric patients whose families are underinsured or uninsured and cannot afford to pay for their medication(s).

150. Pediatric Neurovascular – Established in 2015 by Interline Brands, funds are used to support programs, services, research, education and clinical needs of children suffering from neurovascular illnesses, including stroke and aneurysms.

151. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic - Breast Cancer Care for Baptist Medical Center Beaches – Funded in 2015 by the proceeds of the Pink Ribbon Golf Classic, this endowment supports the breast cancer needs of patients, programs and services at Baptist Beaches.

THE PLAYERS Center for Child Health at Wolfson Children’s Hospital – Established in 2016 to support the programs and services of THE PLAYERS Center for Child Health at Wolfson Children’s Hospital, which serves as a community outreach center focused on improving the health, wellness and quality of life of children and families living in the North Florida and South Georgia region and to ensure sustainability of its five core focuses, including Community Education, Unintentional Injury Prevention, Health and Wellness, Healthcare Access and Legislative Advocacy.

153. Program for International Peace – Established in 2016 by Daniel and Jill Scheuble to provide funding for the Program for International Peace at Wolfson Children’s Hospital, which provides life-saving treatment for children from around the world.

154. Promise to Kate – The Promise to Kate Foundation, led by Elizabeth and David Conte, established this fund in 2014 to provide funding for educational opportunities for Wolfson Children’s Hospital’s clinical staff which enhance the patient experience through innovative, efficient medical practices and methods.

155. Thomas and Cheryl Rackley Beaches Cardiology – In 2014, Thomas and Cheryl Rackley established this endowment to support projects, equipment and operations for cardiac services at Baptist Beaches.

156. Rackley Beaches Neurology – Established by Thomas and Cheryl Rackley in 2016 to create a neuroscience endowment at Baptist Beaches, which supports neurology and neuroscience needs such as the Baptist Neurological Institute.

157. Rehabilitation Services at Baptist Medical Center South in Memory of Jefferson R. Edwards IV – Established in 2016 by Annette and Jefferson R. Edwards, III, MD, in memory of their son, Jefferson R. Edwards IV, to provide rehab services at Baptist South in the area of physical and occupational therapy for patients who are either uninsured or underinsured.

158. Bertram S. Reid Senior Services – This fund was established in 1997 to honor the late Mr. Reid by his wife Margaret and friends. The purpose of the fund is to serve the critical medical and various other needs of the elderly in our community.

159. Reid Technology – In 2008, this endowment was established from the estate of Bertram Reid with the purpose of supporting clinical and information technology. The fund provides salaries, equipment and materials required to enhance technology for both medical and information purposes at Baptist Health.

160. RITA Foundation Cancer Endowment in Honor of The Hanania Auto Group – In 2017, the RITA Foundation established this fund in honor of The Hanania Auto Group to support women’s cancer programs at Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center.

161. RITA Foundation/Mixed Tennis RITA Cancer Fund – Established in 2017 by the RITA Foundation to help fund prostate support groups at Baptist Medical Center Beaches, such as Bro to Bro, as well as prostate cancer care and education.

162. Roark Nursing Education Established in 2014 by Darin Roark, an administrator for Baptist Health, the purpose of this gift is to provide funding for nursing education, including special speakers, educational materials, workshops and seminars for Baptist Clay.

RobbinsNest Pet Therapy – This fund was established by the RobbinsNest Fund in 2015 to support pet therapy and other specialized programs for patients at Wolfson Children’s Hospital that enhance the social, physical and emotional development of children and provide a powerful normalizing effect on their hospital experience.

165. Robert and Jennie Rowe – In 2009, the Rowes established this fund and later designated the purpose as Baptist AgeWell Center for Senior Health. The couple values the care provided by Baptist Health and knows the value the center provides for our community’s aging population.

166. Meredith and Mary Ruark – In 2016, Mary W. Ruark established this endowment at Baptist Nassau to provide cancer care, treatment and prevention for Nassau County residents throughout the Baptist Health System.

167. Ruby Satpathy, MD, Excellence in Structural Heart – In 2017, Ruby Satpathy, MD, and her husband, Ajaya Kar, established this structural heart endowment at Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville to support structural heart, patient care and staff education and training.

168. Michael and Janet Scharf Orthopaedic – In 2014, Michael and Janet Scharf established this fund to support education, training and equipment for the Orthopaedic Department at Baptist Jacksonville.

169. Scholarship Golf Classic – This endowment was established in 1990 by a group of Baptist Health physicians who were concerned with the shortage of skilled nursing professionals in the area. The fund, supported by proceeds from an annual golf tournament, provides scholarships to nurses and other health care professionals to assure that our community has access to the most highly trained staff.

170. Joel P. Schrank, MD, Excellence in Cardiac Nursing – Anonymous donors established this fund in 2015 to support advanced cardiology nursing education needs for Baptist Jacksonville. They wanted to recognize Dr. Schrank for his many years of service as one of the foremost cardiologists in the region.

171. Eugene and Marilyn Schutt Employee Development and Recognition – In 2014, the Schutts established this fund to provide employee development and recognition opportunities each year, granting funds to at least one employee from Baptist Beaches within the Endoscopy Department.

172. SEI Social Responsibility – SEI established this fund in 2015 to provide support for Social Responsibility and Pastoral Care community outreach programs such as community building, education, training, health and wellness and serving those in need.

184. Wilma P. Smith – This endowment was established by Mireille S. Threlkel and Robert Threlkel, MD, in 2001 in memory of Wilma Smith. This endowment supports children with abnormalities and multiple conditions at Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

185. Smoking Clays for Kids Emergency Department – This fund was established in 2016 from the proceeds of Smoking Clays for Kids to support programs and services provided for children and families utilizing Wolfson Children’s Hospital Emergency Department.



186. Edward and Lizbeth Snyder Pediatric Cleft and Craniofacial Conditions – The Partnership for Child Health established this fund in 2013 to support the Jacksonville Cleft and Craniofacial program. The endowment provides treatment, service, education and research related to such conditions in collaboration with Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

194. Danielle and Keith Stein Patient Safety in Memory of Daniel Stein – Established in 2014 by the Steins, this gift was made to provide support for new and innovative approaches to help improve patient outcomes. Later that year, Daniel passed away and the fund is dedicated to his memory.

195. Deanie and Jay Stein Baptist MD Anderson Director’s Fund – In 2015, the Steins established the first director’s fund to support Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center. The gift will provide for patient care, research, equipment, construction and renovations, lectures, recruitment of clinical staff as well as educational opportunities.

196. Linda Berry Stein Going Home – In 2001, this endowment was established by Linda and David Stein to provide critical needs, including medical and rehabilitation equipment and pharmaceuticals, for disadvantaged children discharged from Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

197. Peter S. Stevens, MD – This endowment was established in 1998 by the late Dr. Peter Stevens, a pediatric urologist, and his wife, Barbara. The fund is used to support education and research in pediatric urology to benefit the patients of Wolfson Children’s Hospital and Nemours Children’s Clinic.

198. Stroke Center Fellowship – This fund was established by Cynthia and Daniel Edelman in 2014 to provide support for the Stroke Center by attracting physicians for fellowship training in stroke and endovascular neurosurgery.

199. William Stromberg, MD, Gynecology Education and Research – Dr. Stromberg established this gift in 2015 to support the education, research and patient care activities of gynecology in the Baptist Health System.

200. Walter and Michelle Stys Pediatric Neuroscience Services – This fund was established by Michelle in 2014 in memory of Walter Stys to provide comprehensive pediatric neuroscience services for children with a range of neurological disorders.

Subaru of Jacksonville Porter Family for Wolfson Children’s Hospital Trauma Services – In 2016, the Porter Family and Subaru of Jacksonville established this fund to support the programs, services and equipment purchases for Wolfson Children’s Hospital Trauma Center and related trauma services and programs.

203. Jack Surasky – In 2000, this endowment was established by Mr. Surasky’s estate to support the medical needs of critically ill children and educational needs of the staff who serve them in the Northeast Florida Pediatric Diabetes Center at Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

204. Swisher International Emergency Department for Baptist Beaches – Swisher International, Inc. established this fund in 2015 to support the expansion of the Emergency Department as well as its programs and services at Baptist Beaches.

205. Team Member Care Fund – This fund was established in 2001 to provide emergency assistance to Baptist Health employees who are in financial crisis. A majority of the funds come from fellow team members of Baptist Health and distribution is managed by the Spiritual Care Department.

206. C. Herman and Mary Virginia Terry Asthma – Established by Mary Virginia in 2015, this fund provides staffing and services for asthma education and treatment through THE PLAYERS Center for Child Health at Wolfson Children’s.

207. Thompson Family AgeWell Fund – Carol and Joseph Thompson established this fund in 2015 to support the inpatient and outpatient programs of the AgeWell Institute at Baptist Beaches, with a preference for behavioral health dealing with dementia, depression and delirium.

209. Ullmann Family Nursing Scholarship – Established by Glenn Ullmann in 2017 to provide nursing scholarships for Baptist Beaches with preference given to Certified Nursing Assistants working toward their BSN degree.

Vickers Family – Established in 1998 by the Samuel Vickers Family, this endowment supports treatment, research and education for children living with asthma, one of the leading diagnoses in our community. Funds are also used to provide equipment and necessary drugs to treat asthma for children whose families are experiencing financial hardship.

Joseph and Drenda Vijuk Foundation/Bill and Gayle Gower Social Responsibility – This fund was established in 2015 by Drenda Vijuk and Bill and Gayle Gower to support the community health partnership between Baptist Nassau and the Nassau County Tipping the Scale program through college or vocational scholarships.

212. VyStar Credit Union Pediatric Asthma – VyStar Credit Union established this fund in 2015 to support advocacy programs and services at Wolfson Children’s Hospital that provide education about asthma treatment and management to children diagnosed with asthma.

Ward and Glock Foundation/Parent-Child Interaction Therapy – Michael Ward and Jennifer Glock established this endowment in 2016 to provide professional services necessary to implement and carry out the Parent-Child Interaction Therapy program for uninsured or underinsured families needing intervention on an outpatient basis through the Wolfson Children’s Center for Behavioral Health.

214. William A. Watson Jr. and Janelle W. Watson Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes Research and Cure – The Watsons established this fund in 2015 to provide improved care for Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes through molecular biology and genetic research, providing for equipment, fellowships, operating expenses and related costs.

215. Weaver Legacy – In 2012, this fund was established by J. Wayne and Delores Barr Weaver to support behavioral health programs at Wolfson Children’s Hospital and Baptist Health for children and young adults. Their goal for the endowment is to do more than treat those with behavioral health conditions, but to also help patients who are receiving treatment, while making the community aware of the need for behavioral health programs.

216. Judson and Carolyn Whorton Cancer Research – In honor of Dr. Neil Abramson, the Whortons established this fund in 2000 to provide funding for cancer research and treatment at Baptist Cancer Institute. The funds also support the use of clinical trials at the Institute, which help advance the future of cancer care, and purchase of new, cutting-edge technology.

217. Wicker Smith Structural Heart Education – Wicker Smith established this fund in 2017 to provide support towards structural heart caregiver education and patient support for Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville.

218. Wilbanks Family Pediatric Oncology – Executive Vice President and COO of Baptist Health, John Wilbanks and his wife, Janet, established this fund in 2013 to provide general support for pediatric oncology, realizing the importance of supporting pediatric cancer care for our region’s children.

219. Albert Wilkinson Jr., MD, Professorship of Pediatric Surgery – Established in 2013 by The Women’s Board in memory of Dr. Wilkinson, this endowment allows Wolfson Children’s Hospital to support a percentage of a pediatric general surgeon’s salary and provide the surgeon with the necessary non-clinical time to enhance surgical services provided at the hospital.

220. Norma S. Williams Infusion Center – This fund was established in 2015 by Norma and John Williams Jr. to provide support for the Baptist Health Infusion Center, inclusive of construction, renovations and equipment related to the MD Anderson Cancer Care Network affiliation and/or similar cancer partnerships that may develop over time.

221. Wilson Cancer Care Center – Laura A. and Joseph M. Mitrick established this endowment in 2014 to support the needs of the Wilson Cancer Care Center at Baptist Beaches.

Winston Family Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center – In 2016, Jim Winston established this endowment to provide the BMDA Cancer Center’s Medical Director with support for patient care, treatment, research, equipment, construction/renovation, invited lecturers and clinical staff, recruitment and education.

Wolfson Children’s Challenge Technology and Equipment Support – The Wolfson Children’s Challenge, comprised of a group of committed volunteers and grateful patient families, established this fund in 2013. Supported by an annual running event, funds provide for the equipment and technology needs of Wolfson Children’s.

Wolfson Children’s Hospital Auxiliary – In 2014, the Wolfson Children’s Auxiliary established this fund to support new and existing services, programs and materials that enhance and enrich the patient and family experience, while keeping Wolfson Children’s at the forefront of premium patient care.

Wolfson Children’s Hospital Bass Tournament – Established in 1999 by employees of Baptist Health and funded by proceeds from an annual bass tournament which began in 1989, this endowment provides for the educational needs of patients and staff and supports equipment purchases for Wolfson Children’s Hospital. Tournament leadership is composed of members of the Plant Facilities, Property Management and Construction Services Departments at Baptist Health and volunteers.



226. Wolfson Children’s Hospital Center for Medically Complex Children at UF – This fund was established by anonymous donors in 2014, naming the Center in honor of Bower Lyman, to support its operations and needs to help ensure that medically complex children receive the care that they need.

227. Wolfson Children’s Hospital Child Life – Established in 2014 by Michael, Eileen and Katelynn Grebe, this fund supports the needs of the Child Life Department at Wolfson Children’s Hospital. Funding decisions are advised by the Kids Who Care program.

228. Wolfson Children’s Hospital Developmental Pediatrics Center – This fund was established in 2014 by The Bradbury Family Charitable Foundation to provide support for the programs and services that bring together teams of pediatricians, therapists, specialists and psychologists to work with children who are at risk for learning, behavioral and developmental delays. The teams serve children with a variety of conditions, ranging from treatable developmental delays to lifelong conditions.

229. Wolfson Children’s Hospital Diabetes and Endocrinology Center – This endowment was established by John and Dorothy Barber in 2014 to support the Wolfson Children’s Hospital Diabetes and Endocrinology Center which offers diagnosis, treatment and management of diabetes and endocrine disorders.

230. Wolfson Children’s Hospital Emergency Department Programs and Services – Established in 2014 by James and Murray Benz, this fund supports programs and services provided for children and families who are admitted to Wolfson Children’s Emergency Department.

231. Wolfson Children’s Hospital General – In 1996, this endowment was established to support the areas of greatest need at Wolfson Children’s Hospital. This all-purpose endowment provides flexible funding for timely and critical needs.

232. Wolfson Children’s Hospital Newborn Intensive Care Unit – In 2014, George and Virginia Winterling established this fund to support the needs of patients, families and clinical staff of the newborn intensive care unit (NICU) at Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

Wolfson Children’s Hospital Patient Technology – In 2014, Brooke and Hap Stein established this fund to maintain and expand educational and entertainment technology available for the Exploratorium and other similar areas at Wolfson Children’s Hospital, ensuring patients and families have access to an engaging, educational and fun atmosphere.

234. Wolfson Children’s Hospital Pediatric Cardiology Intensive Care – This endowment was established in 2013 through the annual event, Smoking Clays for Kids. Funds raised from the event are used to support the patients and staff of the pediatric cardiology intensive care unit through advanced care, technology, education and professional growth.

Smith Trust to support recreational therapy provided to patients at Wolfson Children’s Hospital. Recreational therapy includes relaxation and pain management, procedural support and preparation, as well as sensory and developmental stimulation.

Wolfson Children’s Hospital Stys Medically Complex Child – This fund was established by Michelle in 2014 in memory of Walter Stys to streamline and improve the care of children with severe disabilities and chronic diseases, providing multidisciplinary care all in one place to comprehensively address the broad range of needs of these children and their families.

239. Wolfson Family – Established in 1999, this endowment was established to serve the needs of Wolfson Children’s Hospital patients. The Wolfson Family has been integral to the enhancement of pediatric care in the region, impacting the lives of thousands of children.

240. Saul and Hazel Wolfson Pediatric Research – This endowment was established by Karen and Don Wolfson in 1999 to honor Don’s parents. The purpose of the endowment is to fund pediatric research within Wolfson Children’s Hospital that will help promote advances in the treatment of children in our community.

241. Women’s Board/Carolyn U. Johnson Nursing Research – The Women’s Board of Wolfson Children’s Hospital established this fund in 2015 with the purpose of supporting research projects and activities facilitated by the Wolfson Children’s nursing staff in an effort to develop the latest processes and techniques to improve the care of children.

Women’s Board Neonatal Intensive Care – This endowment was established by The Women’s Board of Wolfson Children’s Hospital in 2017 to provide funding and support for programs and services, capital needs, technology and equipment for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and its related areas at Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

243. Women’s Health Initiatives – This fund was established in 2014 to support health care for women.

244. Woolley-McCrone-Wicker Leukemia – Established in 2017 by Louise Wicker in memory of her late husband, Marvin Wicker and her family, to support research, education and treatment of leukemia at Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center with an emphasis on Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Louise is a native of Jacksonville and former NICU nurse at Baptist Health.

Calculation of Endowment Value — 3-Year Rolling Average

As the Foundation continues to refine its policy on investments, we have adopted the 3-year rolling average

approach. The concept is simple. The value of each endowment is calculated on June 30 of each of the last three

years and then averaged to determine the dollar amount from which the 5 percent spending rate is calculated.

The advantage to this method is that averaging “smooths” out the fluctuations in market performance from year

to year and provides a more predictable source of revenue.

Below you will see two columns. The first is the average of the past three years. The second column has the

amount, up to 5 percent, which is available to be spent as of October 1, 2017. For some of the newer funds, the

I want to welcome all our past and new endowment donors to the fifth edition of

the Legacy Report. During the past five years ,the endowment has grown from

$22 million to $150 million and from 64 named funds to 244. The Foundation has

exceeded all its expectations through the generosity of our donors during the

Securing Tomorrow Together campaign. J. Wayne and Delores Barr Weaver’s

$10 million gift in October 2012 helped to launch our campaign and set the stage

for our success. More details on our record-breaking campaign will be highlighted

when Faces of Philanthropy is published in February 2018.

Investment Returns

I am pleased to report that the return on investment for the period July 1, 2016, to June 30, 2017, has

been solid. Results were strong for the endowment portfolio during this 12-month period. The Investment

Committee of the health system has been very involved to ensure a successful strategy which performs well in

robust years and minimizes downside risk. Currently, our asset allocation is 60 percent in stocks and 40 percent

in bonds which falls within the fiduciary guidelines for prudent management of endowments.

Donor Impact

More than 300 donors generously contributed to the 244 endowments this past year, making positive

impacts to programs and services. One of them was donor Michelle Stys. She and her husband, Walter,

earmarked $10 million from their estate to support Wolfson Children’s Hospital. Walter passed away

in 2013, and Michelle died unexpectedly in June 2017. The Stys’ $10 million endowment gift has been

matched at 150% by Baptist Health, creating a total of $25 million in endowed funds. Thanks to the lasting

legacy of Michelle and Walter, the annual investment earnings of $1,250,000 will be used for unfunded or

underfunded pediatric programs at Wolfson Children’s, saving the lives of children who need quality health

care in our region.

Baptist Health Matching Gift Program Ends December 31, 2017

As we reach the end of the Securing Tomorrow Together campaign on December 31, 2017, so will the

matching gift program. Strong market conditions coupled with the philanthropic leverage of Baptist Health’s

matching gift program allowed us to increase the endowment by more than $125 million in five years. I want

to personally thank you for this tremendous support. Baptist Health is fortunate to have such a loyal group
