Dear Ardrey Kell Families: We are pleased that you have chosen Ardrey Kell High School as your child’s school. We continue to set high expectations for our staff and our students. We value the commitment of teaching children in a safe and orderly environment for them to learn and grow. We have chosen this agenda to help your child with his/her organizational skills. Used properly, this agenda provides parents the opportunity to know what is expected of your child and may be used to communicate with each of your child’s teachers. Please check the agenda on a daily basis to ensure that your child is on the pathway to success.

Our Philosophy: All students need a loving, caring, and supportive environment to help them grow socially, emotionally, and academically. Before placing students in classes, we assess students’ strengths and weaknesses and we schedule classes that meet their needs. We monitor progress throughout the year to help all students achieve. We have a strong support system in place that provides students the help they need to have success both in and out of the classroom. We make safety and order a top priority by constantly monitoring the instructional environment and making the necessary changes to our safety plans. We build positive communication through the use of our Connect Ed phone system, school website, weekly Knightly News emails, Parent Portal, and student agendas. We are student centered, and we celebrate diversity and creativity on a daily basis. We value our parents and we want them to be a part of our environment by attending school events and volunteering for activities. Expectations: Each year, we review our expectations for not only students, but also for staff members and parents. As a part of the Ardrey Kell family, parents play a major role in the success of the school. Please work with your child to ensure that he/she knows the expectations and continues to live up to them. If your child loses his/her agenda, he/she will be required to purchase a new one. An agenda is required for all students. Rights and Responsibilities Agenda: At Ardrey Kell High School, we follow the guidelines set forth in the CMS Rights and Responsibilities Code of Conduct Handbook. We expect all students to abide by the rules established by the school system. Rule violations will be dealt with as outlined in the handbook. Please read the handbook carefully and make yourself familiar with all the rules and consequences. Also, an appeals process exists to ensure that school actions are fair and equitable. We have your child’s best interests at heart and we want him/her to be a successful learner. Please review all policies and consequences and continue to work with your child to make sure that everyone understands the policies.

Athletic Eligibility Requirements

Only students in grades 6-12 may participate in interscholastic athletic competition (State Board of Education Regulation). In order to qualify for public school participation, a student must meet the following requirements, but is not limited to the following requirements:

No student may be eligible to participate at the high school level for a period lasting longer than eight (8) consecutive semesters, beginning with the student’s entry into the 9th grade or participation on a high school team, whichever occurs first. For students who skip the 9th grade and advance directly to the 10th from the 8th, the year prior to entering the 10th grade is considered the first year of entry into 9th grade for athletics. The principal shall have evidence of the date of each player’s entry into 9th grade. The North Carolina cumulative record is sufficient.

Student-athletes establish a “sports school” at which they are eligible to participate in interscholastic athletics. The sports school for new students and 9th graders is the school in which the student is enrolled on the first day of school.

5

Athletic Eligibility Requirements (continued)

Students must also meet the requirements set out below. For other students, the sports school will usually be either the school attended the previous year or the student’s home school. There are exceptions to this general rule.

9th– 12th Grades Must meet local promotion standards

Must have earned a 2.0 GPA from previous semester

Must have passed a minimum load of work during the previous

semester *

Must be currently enrolled in at least one-half of the minimum

academic course load.

Must be in attendance at school for at least one-half of the

instructional day

Shall not participate if he/she becomes 19 years of age on or

before August 31 of said school year

*High School: For athletic eligibility purposes, a minimum load is defined as passing a minimum of three out of four on a 4 x 4 format (or six out of eight courses in the A/B format) of block scheduling during the traditional school day.

Attendance/Absences

(Both excused and unexcused absences count towards 10-day limit students are allowed to have for each class.)

There is a direct correlation between regular attendance and school achievement; therefore, it is imperative that students are in class every day. The North Carolina Attendance Laws (GS-115C-378) expect every student to be in attendance each school day. There may be times that a student must be absent. In the event of an absence, the student must bring a note signed by a parent, guardian, or health care professional stating the reason for the absence(s), the date(s) of the absence(s) and any other pertinent information. Students who are absent:

Complete the Ardrey Kell Absence Form that is found on our website. It must be signed by a parent or legal guardian stating the reason for the absence(s), the date(s) of the absence and any other documentation (dr. note/dentist note, etc.)

Turn in the form to the Main Office when you return to school. All absences are considered unexcused until a form is presented. Forms and notes presented more than five (5) days after the student returns to school will be accepted but the absence will remain “unexcused”.

6

Absences (continued) It is the student’s responsibility to contact individual teachers within five (5) school days for any work missed during the absence that must be made up. Make sure to reference each teacher’s course syllabus for specific details regarding missed work. Students arriving at school after 11:00 AM or departing from school prior to 11:00 AM will be considered absent for the entire school day and will not be permitted to participate in CMS sponsored activities on that day. A student who misses more than half of any class period will be considered absent from that class for that day. When absent an extended period of time (5 or more days) due to a chronic or extended illness, or other unforeseen events, please notify the attendance secretary, your counselor, grade level administrator and our school nurse, before returning to school. Such illnesses/absences can and often do affect academic performance. Sharing this information as soon as possible will help to maintain a team approach in ensuring your child’s academic success. Excused Absences (absence note must be presented in order for an excused absence): Illness Death in immediate family Doctor/Dental appointments Religious observances (holidays must be approved by the school district prior to the absence) Court proceedings Approved/verification of college visits (Juniors – Limit 1 and Seniors - Limit 2 – verification notes from the college one the date of your visit must be presented with the absence form) Examples of Unexcused Absences: Traffic/Car trouble Inclement weather Missing the bus Oversleeping Vacation/Family trips

Health Room

The Health Room is located in the Main Office. It is for emergency use and minor first aid treatment only. Students will not be allowed to remain in the Health Room for longer than 5 minutes unless it is determined that he/she is too ill to return to class. If it is determined that a student is too ill to return to class, a parent or guardian will be notified and asked to pick up their student or give permission for the student to leave. If a student is unable to leave school, he/she must return to class. Medication Administration – For safety purposes, medication will only be administered to students if a Medication Authorization Form is completed by a Physician and signed by a parent then returned to the school nurse; this includes over the counter medications as well.

12

Homeroom Students remain with their Homeroom class for all four years of high school. This is an opportunity for teachers and students to assess the progress in their classes and make informed decisions about where to attend Knight Time. This time is also used to discuss current events, participate in ice-breaker/team building activities, and attend grade level events. Building a relationship with your Homeroom teacher is a key to your success in high school. In addition to this relationship, there will be a quarterly evaluation from your Homeroom teacher. The “grade” (exceeds expectations, meets expectations or does not meet expectations) will impact a student’s opportunity to park on campus, attend extracurricular activities, participant in clubs, etc. The Homeroom process is a critical part of our Graduation Initiative.

Honor Code

Ardrey Kell High School supports student adherence to the CMS Student Honor Code regarding the merits of ethical behavior and fair play. Cheating on exams or other academic work will not be tolerated and will lead to serious repercussions for students. Any honor code violation may result in disqualification from the National Honor Society.

“I will not cheat or help others cheat; will take pride in my school and how I represent it; and will be responsible for my actions. I understand that violating this honor code compromises my self-respect. I will follow this honor code and help others do the same.”

Internet Use

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education Policy #6160 will be followed for student and faculty use and access to the Internet. CMS offers an Internet network (CMSNET) accessible to students, parents, and staff. CMS users will sign an “Internet Acceptable Use Agreement” prior to being given access to CMSNET. This agreement will define the educational objectives and guidelines for use as well as unacceptable uses which will result in revocation of access to the Internet and possible legal action. CMS has installed centralized software to control, monitor, and filter inappropriate material. Students under the age of 18 must have written parental permission before being given access to CMSNET.

Knight Time

Knight Time is a remediation/tutoring time built into the school day for all students. It operates on a rotating schedule every three weeks. Students are responsible for selecting the class that they want to attend for Knight Time, and then communicating their choice to their Homeroom teacher. During Knight Time remediation groups are smaller than regular class sizes, and are meant to target specific skills that students may be struggling with.

Late Arrivals

Lockout begins @ 7:25 AM. If you arrive after 7:25 AM, you must have a Late Arrival form, which can be found on the AK website, completely filled out with a parent/guardian signature. If a note is not presented at the time of check in you will be asked to fill one out and to provide proof of identification which can delay your student’s arrival. Failure to sign out and leaving campus (skipping class) without permission will result in disciplinary action and parking privileges revoked. Please try to schedule early dismissal times for the end of class periods to eliminate classroom disruptions. Classroom teachers cannot grant permission for a student to leave campus. Only the Main Office personnel or an administrator can authorize this action.

Lockers

All lockers are the property of the school. Lockers can be used for a $5.00 fee and are assigned to the student only upon the student’s agreement to the following terms and conditions:

Students are responsible for all property placed in the locker. Lockers should be used only for storage of such property as is necessary for the student’s school activities such as school books, school projects, gym clothes, etc.

Lockers are the property of CMS officials. School officials are authorized to open and search any locker to remove unauthorized articles or any other items which may endanger the health, welfare, or safety of students or school personnel.

Students are not permitted to change or share lockers without permission from

the school administration.

14

Community service is an essential component of our lockout program. It is the student’s responsibility to contact his/her teachers within five (5) school days for make-up work needed due to any class absence. Students who have major tests (as determined by the teacher) or other date specific assignments will be required to complete those either in the classroom or in the Student Management Center (SMC) under the supervision of the SMC Coordinator and administrator. Each recovery session is 90 minutes long. Recovery is from 2:30 - 4:00 PM. Each department determines its own

location. Students will not be admitted late. Any student who is disruptive will be removed and will not receive credit for

that day.

Security

The following items are required for all Ardrey Kell students: Agenda: Every student is required to purchase an Ardrey Kell agenda and have it on him/her during the school day. If a student does not have an agenda, he/she will be given one in the main office and charged $5.00 which must be paid by the next day. The agenda is a great tool to help students stay organized and informed of daily class assignments. Also, it is a hall pass for when a student is out of class. Student ID: Every student is required to have their student ID on them on a daily basis. A student ID is required for entrance into all classes. (Using an inappropriate ID is an Honor Code violation) Student ID pictures will be taken at the beginning of the year in the Media Center. Replacement IDs cost $3.00. Students who do not have their ID will be sent to the Media Center to have one made one and will be charged $3.00, which must be paid by the next day. The student ID provides access to the student’s Media Center account, lunch account, exams and is an additional security measure to help identify Ardrey Kell students during the school day. Additional Security items: All drink containers must be in a clear container. Any container that does not meet these requirements will be confiscated. This includes all types of coffee containers and non-see through water bottles.

Tardies Students are expected to be on time for all classes. All students, including drivers, who are late to school must complete a Late Arrival form which can be found on the AK website. We will not accept phone calls or emails for any late students – NO EXCEPTIONS! If a student is late for 2nd, Knight Time, Homeroom, 3rd or 4th block class, he/she is to report immediately to the Main Office with their Late Arrival form. Students without forms will be sent to lockout. Parents will not be allowed to be called to come back and sign in their child. Grade level administrators will meet with those students with excessive absences/tardies to 1st block and contact parents to develop a plan for the student and to inform them of the consequences of the excessive absences.
