ARCS PROVIDES A MEASURABLEIMPACT ON THE ADVANCEMENTOF SCIENCE IN AMERICA

ARCS Foundation is a nonprofit organization administered entirelyby women who see a national problem and are taking the initiativeto solve it. The organization’s mission is to address this country'sserious shortage of American scientists and engineers. We addressthis issue by providing financial awards and encouragement to menand women working to complete their degrees in science, engineering, and medical research.

Our Scholars Will Change The World

Single-minded focus, sharp intellect, years of hard work and sacrifice, strict discipline, and profound commitment to scientific exploration -these are the characteristics of scientists who will lead us to a betterfuture. Hundreds of these individuals are current ARCS Scholars, poised to make the discoveries that will lead to U.S. scientificprogress, global competitiveness, and national security.

Since its founding in 1958 ARCS Foundation has grown to 16chapters nationally and invested more than $100 million in thepotential of over 9,500 of the most outstanding American graduateand undergraduate Scholars in science, engineering and medicalresearch at 54 of the country's top research universities. Since 1985,the San Diego chapter alone has contributed over $9 million insupport of Scholars at San Diego State University, The ScrippsResearch Institute, University of California, San Diego andthe University of San Diego.

ARCS Foundation donors can be assured that 100% of each contribution isdirected to the Scholar Award Fund, because we provide a unique vehiclefor supporting Scholars in science, medicine, and engineering withoutincurring administrative overhead. Member dues and event underwritingcover all Foundation operating expenses and members donate their timeto provide most administrative services.

There are several ways for you to support these ARCS Scholars. One is tomake an annual gift to the Scholar Award Fund. This entire amount isawarded within a year of receipt. Another is through a gift to the Endow-ment Fund, in which the principal continues to accrue interest in perpetuityand Scholar Awards are made from the interest earned. And another is toprovide a gift to ARCS Foundation through the Legacy Society.

Annual Gifts to the Scholar Award Fund Gifts to ARCS Foundation Scholar Award Fund support continuingand new Scholars at San Diego State University, The ScrippsResearch Institute, University of California, San Diego, andUniversity of San Diego. Gifts to the Scholar Award Fund may bemade by check, credit card, or through gifts of appreciatedsecurities. Gifts received during the fiscal year (July 1 - June 30) areawarded at the beginning of the following academic year.

Gifts to ARCS Foundation Endowment Fund Gifts to ARCS Foundation Endowment build an investment fund, theearnings of which provide a permanent source of income essentialfor supporting a portion of the Award Fund in perpetuity. Wheneveran Endowment grows by $150,000, the interest earned generates a$7,500 Award. The Virginia L. Grady Fund, Wally Schirra MemorialEndowment Fund and the ARCS Endowment Fund are examples ofpermanently endowed Scholar Awards.

Gifts to ARCS Legacy SocietyARCS Legacy Society comprises donors who have provided for ARCSFoundation in their estate plans, thereby insuring the future of ARCSScholars. For further information about how to become a member of theLegacy Society, contact Becki Etess at (858) 456-2593.
