CS2014 HENNING Public School

On Saturday, March 29 the Hen-ning Archery club competed in the first archery competition in school history. The group traveled to Cham-plain Park High School and competed in the Minnesota State NASP Tournament. The tourna-ment was attended by over 1,100 students from across the state. The Henning group was led, on the boy’s side by ninth grader Alex Suchy who scored a team high 278 out of a possible 300. Suchy’s score was good enough for 10th place in the ninth grade boys di-

vision and 44th place out of 649 boys overall. Ninth grader Tina Rice led the Henning girl’s scores with a 254. The trip was made possible thanks to Chuck Frederick and the

Henning Rod and Gun Club. Fred-erick helped coach the group this winter and attended the meet with the team. The Rod and Gun club provided transportation and en-try fees for the students. The club also recently received bow cases thanks to a donation by Prairie to Woods Whitetails, the cases came in very handy at the tournament. The archery club season was a huge success this winter thanks to local groups and we are very thankful for the community sup-port of the program.

Henning BPA has strong showing at region, state Quinton Borchardt has advanced to the 2014 National Business Professionals of America contest after finishing in second place at the state contest. Borchardt, who was competing in the PC Servicing and Trouble-shooting category, and competed at the national meet in April in India-napolis, Ind. In addition to Bor-chardt’s second place finish, a number of Henning BPA team members finished in the top 20 overall at the state contest. Among the students who placed at the state contest include: Greta Nyhus, ninth place in Presentation Management-Individual; Jacob Haugen, ninth place in Extemp Speech; Savanna Cichy, 14th in Advanced Spread-sheets; Alyssa Houselog, Paige Weber, Kendal Bjorklund and Leah We-ber, 14th in Presentation Management-Team; Jon Eckhoff and Jacob Hau-gen, 17th in Administra-tive Support Team; and Quinton Borchardt, 19th in Advanced Spread-sheets.

Knowledge bowl teams wrap up busy season

A pair of Henning High School Knowledge Bowl teams advanced to the section contest earlier this year. That is the first time the school has ever had two teams qualify for the section contest. Team 1, made up of Kaleb Thalmann, Quinton Borchardt, Keith Stueve, Jacob Haugen and Anthony Helmbrecht finished in 15th place, while team 2 made up of Alec Suchy, Christian Rose, Lydia Hanson, Savannah Cichy and Courtney Dague took 20th out of 92 teams. Henning High School fielded a third knowledge bowl team that consisted of: Ellie Ranum, Stephen Araca, Desi Roach, Marissa Geyer and Whitney

Henning supermileage team builds fuel efficient cars

The Henning High School Supermileage team has been hard at work this year in their goal to build multiple fuel efficient cars in the annual high mileage com-peittion. The group will compete at the Brainerd Raceway against schools from across the state in a contest to see who can get the best gas mileage on their man-made cars. Advisor Eli Hill said the team revamped one car this year and

built two more cars from scratch. The class in which students build the cars is called “power technol-ogy” and focuses on a real world challenge that encourages cre-ative problem solving, design and fabrication. The students learn to weld both aluminum and steel and then use those metalworking skills to build the cars. Many of the same students are in the “out-door handyman/ manufacturing enterprise” class and have nearly

completed 2 very nice spearhous-es for local anglers. Hill said he is proud of the team and is excited to see them test their results at the Brainerd competition. In addition to Hill, Chuck Frederick has been help-ing to mentor the students as they construct the high mileage vehicles. Students in the power technol-ogy course include: Tyler Klimek, Kellin Wiese, Cody Greenwood, Dylan Schwartz, Tarren Early, Josh Wojcik, Taylor Johnson, Shane Woody, Travis Turchin, Brandon Moats, Vance Doll, Carl Colburn, Nikita Chernyshov and Mason Truax.

Henning students hosted their annual fall musical entitled “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” in November. The musical featured three per-formances.“How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” The musical is about a young window washer named J. Pier-repont Finch, played by Kaleb Thalmann, who tries to work his way to the top of the World Wide Wicket Company by reading the book “How to Succeed in Busi-ness Without Really Trying”. The “Book Voice” tells him that he will succeed if he follows its ad-vice. As Finch enters the company, he bumps into J.B. Biggley, played by Quinton Borchardt, who is the president of the company. Bigg-ley dismisses Finch to the person-nel manager Mr. Bratt, played by Ricky Erlandson, who gives him a job in the company’s mailroom. While working in the mailroom, he works with Mr. Biggley’s lazy and arrogant nephew Bud Frump, played by Carl Colburn and earns favor with the long-time head of the mailroom, Mr. Twimble, played by Kory Juvrud. Meanwhile, a young secretary named Rosemary Pilkington, played by Kendal Bjorklund, falls in love with Finch and dreams of a life in the suburbs. Her fellow sec-retaries, Smitty, played by Alyssa Houselog, Ms. Krumholtz, played by Britta Torgerson and several

other ladies chorus are envious of her chance to marry her boss. When an extremely attractive but air-headed woman named Hedy LaRue, played by Whitney

Borchardt, is hired all the busi-nessmen are instantly attracted and want her as their secretary. The group later finds out that LaRue is Mr. Biggley’s secret mistress.

The Henning speech team opened their season in early February and wrapped up their season in early April. The team competed at a number of invitational tournaments before moving on to the Subsection 22 and Section 6A tournaments late in the season. The activity is sanctioned by the Minnesota State High School League and is open to students in grades 7-12. Participants can choose from 13 different categories of competition: Creative Expression, Discussion, Seri-ous Drama, Dramatic Duo, Extemporaneous Reading, Extemporaneous Speaking, Great Speeches, Humorous Interpretation, Informative Speaking, Original Ora-

tory, Serious Poetry, Serious Prose and Storytelling. Some of the highlights from the season include: a team championship trophy at the Eagle Valley invitational tournament; 12 members of the team placing in the top eight in their re-spective categories at the Subsection 22 meet; 10 team mem-bers competing at the Section 6A tour-nament, with four of them advancing to the final round of competition; Alyssa Houselog qualifying for the State Class A speech tournament in the

category of Serious Drama. Speech is an activity which promotes the development of

lifelong communication and social skills. The Henning speech team is fond of the

saying: “We do, for fun, what some others fear more than death itself…public speak-ing!” Members of the 2014 Hen-ning speech team include: Cassidy Anderson, Jacob An-derson, Whitney Borchardt, Ian Froslee, Marissa Geyer, Jacob Haugen, Marc Haugen, Alyssa Houselog, Bailey Keierleber, Riley Moen, Ellie Ranum, Monica Rice, Chris-tian Rose and Vincent Rose. Speech team members are also available to speak to community groups or other interested organizations. Emilee Eckhoff placed third in the research divi-sion of the fourth grade science fair, Hannah Lar-son placed second in the experiment division of the fifth grade science fair and Brandon Otto re-ceived an honorable mention in the research divi-sion of the fifth grade science fair.

The National Honor Society is an organiza-tion that promotes four pillars: Service, Schol-arship, Character and Leadership. Advisor Dana Damm said it is a great reward to be inducted into NHS. Damm said he thinks of NHS as a capstone or final accomplishment in a list of many things a student can be proud of throughout their high school career. Colleges and employers look very favorably on a student’s resume, or application, if they see NHS on it. It is a rewarding experi-ence to help others. It’s a great way to learn how to be a lifelong volunteer and citizen and is also provided countless hours of service to those that need it. To be eligible for the Henning NHS, students

must be a junior or se-nior in high school with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or greater. Students must fill out an application, get letters of recommen-dation and show proof of volunteer/service work. NHS is a nationwide organization that is ap-proximately 100 years old. It was established in Henning under the direc-tion of Terry Oscarson in the 1980’s. There is an induction reception each year in December or Jan-uary for new members. During the spring semester of each year, the students design, plan and carry out one major service project of their own. They also assist other group members with their projects and participate in group wide projects. Examples of projects include Adopt a Highway, blood drives,

tutoring, yard work and many other volunteer activities. Damm said one thing he has found interest-ing is seeing how much a students four pillars have grown after they are in the organization. It teaches them that there is always room for improvement.
