Preparing for the cooler weather, the hot co-

coa and the holidays. The season I like to call

“the thankful season”. During this time of

the year many families begin gathering to-

gether for Thanksgiving Day; others take

this time to prepare for Christmas shopping,

while others just take this time to meditate,

enjoy the cool weather and thank God for

everything He has done for us.

As children of God that we are, we shouldn’t

just be thankful one day or one season of the year. We should be

thankful every day of our lives. While some people seem to feel they

have nothing to be thankful for, I am thankful for just being able to

open my eyes this morning. Every day that we open our eyes, God is

granting us the gift of life one more day. Things might not be perfect

but if God gives you another day He has a purpose for you.

WHAT IS #GIVINGTUESDAY?

We have a day for giving thanks. We have two for getting deals.

Now, we have #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving

back. On Tuesday, December 2, 2014, charities, families,

businesses, community centers, and students around the world

will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate gener-

osity and to give.

It’s a simple idea. Just find a way for your family, your commu-

nity, your company or your organization to come together to

give something more. Then tell everyone you can about how

you are giving. Join us and be a part of a global celebration of a

We want to thank the Chancery Employees and Christ the King Parish in Hillside for all the

donations! Supplies were piling up as the days went by. It was amazing to see the people of

Christ working together for one purpose, Children. I like to believe that when one give to oth-

ers is like creating little miracles for those in need. For some is the miracle of having some-

thing new for once, for others the miracle of financial help.

Your donations were sent to the four following Catholic Schools:

Archbishop Oscar Romero Prayer: A Step Along the Way

It helps, now and then, to step back and take a long view.

The kingdom is not only beyond our efforts, it is even beyond our vision.

We accomplish in our lifetime only a tiny fraction of the magnificent enterprise that is

God's work. Nothing we do is complete, which is a way of saying that the Kingdom al-

ways lies beyond us.

No statement says all that could be said.

No prayer fully expresses our faith.

No confession brings perfection.

No pastoral visit brings wholeness.

No program accomplishes the Church's mission.

No set of goals and objectives includes everything.

This is what we are about.

We plant the seeds that one day will grow.

We water seeds already planted, knowing that they hold future promise.

We lay foundations that will need further development.

We provide yeast that produces far beyond our capabilities.

We cannot do everything, and there is a sense of liberation in realizing that.

This enables us to do something, and to do it very well.

It may be incomplete, but it is a beginning, a step along the way, an

opportunity for the Lord's grace to enter and do the rest.

We may never see the end results, but that is the difference between the master build-

er and the worker.

We are workers, not master builders; ministers, not messiahs.

We are prophets of a future not our own. Bishop Ken Untener of Saginaw *This prayer was composed by Bishop Ken Untener of Saginaw, drafted for a homily by Card. John Dearden in Nov. 1979 for a celebration of departed priests. As a reflection on the anniversary of the martyrdom of Bishop Romero, Bishop Untener included in a reflection book a passage titled "The mystery of the Romero Prayer." The mystery is that the words of the prayer are attributed to Oscar Romero, but they were never spoken by him.

faith and relationship with Jesus Christ; and to help guide their roles in their families, in the

Church, and in society as men of God.

♦ The OFFICE OF EVANGELIZATION serves to complement and enhance evangelization

efforts in the Archdiocese of Newark through parish consultations, programs, courses and work-

shops.

♦ The ARCHDIOCESAN CATHOLIC SCHOOLS’ OFFICE helps the schools that are not

able to sustain themselves to remain viable and of service to the communities of faith that they

serve.

♦ The HISPANIC APOSTOLATE develops and coordinates guidelines, plans and pastoral

goals and is a resource to the parishes providing and developing ministries.

27th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“The stone the builders rejected has become the corner stone…” - MATTHEW 21:42

Jesus was the corner stone and He was rejected by the religious and political leaders of his day,

as well as ordinary citizens. Living a stewardship lifestyle may cause you to be “rejected” by oth-

ers in today’s society. For example, saying grace before a meal in a restaurant may attract some

strange looks from some. But to others it is sign that God is alive and well!

God really does provide for those that are grateful and generous. This is very difficult for people

that don’t live a stewardship lifestyle to believe. People are skeptical and say it’s just coincidence.

If you are skeptical, try living a stewardship lifestyle for just one month – be generous with your

gifts of time, talent and treasure and see how God provides for your needs.

Everything we are and everything we have belongs to God. We aren’t “owners” of anything, we

are merely “stewards” of the gifts God has given each of us. All God is asking is that we give

back a portion of what He gave us. This is the essence of Stewardship. God should be our first

priority in everything. All else comes second.

Do you put other “gods” before God? Is your love of money, power, status or some personal pos-

session greater than your love for God? If so, you may want to pay attention to the scripture

reading because you are not going to like the outcome. The good news – it’s not too late to put

God first in your life.

Here’s the ironic thing about people who are generous. Those that give freely and cheerfully do

not do it to be rewarded. They do it to show their love for God and their neighbors. Yet, be-

cause of their generosity, they typically are given more than they gave away!

We are called to help God build His kingdom on earth. We are His eyes, ears, hands and voice

on Earth. By giving of our “first fruits” of our time, talent and treasure we help fulfill God’s

call. Are you doing all you can to help? Do you spend time in prayer every day? Do you partic-

ipate in one of the many parish ministries? Do you give generously in the offertory collection

each week?

“Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over

much…”- MATTHEW 25:21

God expects us to nurture and develop the gifts He has given us and then generously give back

with increase. He doesn’t want us to waste or hoard the gifts He has given us; He expects us to

grow our gifts, use them wisely and be generous with them.

Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

“…as you did it to one of the least of my brethren, you did it to me” – MATTHEW 25:40

Most of us are generous when it’s convenient for us. We are generous when we have the time

or the money. But, generosity is the opposite of that. It means giving of one’s time, money,

compassion, forgiveness, mercy when it’s not convenient; when it’s not on our schedule, but on

the other person’s schedule.

We all take things for granted. In particular, we take time for granted. Our lives are so busy,

many of us are planning our time - our days, weeks, months, even years in advance. Remem-

ber, our time on earth is a gift. None of us knows how long we will be here. Start today and

begin thanking God for each and every day. Take time in silence, everyday, and listen to what

God is saying to you.

We are all called to live a holy life. We are all called to invite others to live holy lives. Living a

stewardship lifestyle, being grateful and generous with our gifts, does just that – it puts us on

the path to holiness and it invites others to be holy, too.

3rd Sunday of Advent

“Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in

Christ Jesus for you” – 1 THESSALONIANS 5:16 - 18

This scripture reading sums up Stewardship. “Rejoice always” means place your trust in God;

He will provide all that you need. “Pray constantly” means prayer should be a running conver-

sation with God throughout the whole day, every day. “Give thanks in all circumstances”

means even in bad situations, thank God. Suffering a little bit helps build empathy for others

in similar situations.

Faith is a gift from God. During this Christmas season take time in silence and pray to God.

Thank Him for all the gifts He has given you. Try to set aside any anger or resentment you

have and really open your heart to receive the gift of God’s grace.

Forgiveness – one of the hardest things for people to do. It’s amazing how long we can hold a

grudge or be angry with someone. As we celebrate the feast of the Holy Family, take this oppor-

tunity to give the gift of forgiveness to someone - maybe someone in your family, maybe a

friend, maybe a co-worker or neighbor or, maybe yourself. Pick up the phone or text someone

right now.

"La piedra que desecharon los constructores ha llegado a ser la piedra angular." - MATEO 21:42

Jesús fue la piedra angular y fue rechazado por los líderes políticos y religiosos de su tiempo, co-

mo también por el ciudadano común. El vivir el estilo de vida de servicio puede hacer que sea

"rechazado" por los demás en la sociedad de hoy. Por ejemplo, dar gracias antes de la comida en

un restaurante podría atraer miradas de extrañeza de parte de algunas personas. ¡Pero para

otros será una señal de que Dios está vivo!

Dios de verdad provee a aquellos que son agradecidos y generosos. Esto es muy difícil para las

personas que no viven una vida de servicio. La gente es escéptica y dice que es solo una coinciden-

cia. Si usted es escéptico, trate de vivir una vida de servicio por solo un mes - sea generoso con

sus dones de tiempo, talento y tesoros y vea como Dios provee para sus necesidades.

Todo lo que somos y todo lo que tenemos le pertenece a Dios. No somos "dueños" de nada, solo so-

mos "servidores" con los regalos que Dios nos ha dado. Lo único que Dios nos pide es que devolva-

mos una pequeña parte de lo que nos ha dado. Esta es la esencia del Espíritu de Servicio. Dios

debe ser nuestra prioridad en todo. Todo lo demás es secundario.

¿Usted pone a otros "dioses" antes que a Dios? ¿Es su amor por el dinero, el poder, el estatus, o

alguna posesión personal más grande que su amor por Dios? Si es así, talvez debería ponerle

atención a las escrituras porque no le va a agradar las consecuencias. La buena noticia - aun no

es tarde para poner a Dios primero en su vida.

Aquí va la ironía de las personas que son generosas. Aquellos que dan libre y alegremente no lo

hacer para ser premiados. Lo hacen para mostrar su amor por Dios y sus prójimos. Pero, a causa

de su generosidad, ¡generalmente reciben más de lo que dan!

Se nos llama para ayudar a Dios a construir su reino en la Tierra. Nosotros somos Sus ojos, oí-

dos, manos y voz en la Tierra. Al donar nuestros "primeros frutos" de nuestro tiempo, talento y

tesoro, estamos ayudando a cumplir con el llamado de Dios. ¿Está usted haciendo todo lo que

puede para ayudar? ¿Se toma el tiempo para rezar todos los días? ¿Participa en alguna de las

muchas parroquias? ¿Hace donaciones generosamente durante el ofertorio cada semana?



“Bien, siervo bueno y fiel; en lo poco fuiste fuel, sobre mucho te pondré…”- MATEO 25:21

Dios espera que alimentemos y desarrollemos los dones que Él nos ha dado y para después gene-

rosamente devolver el favor con multiplicado. Él no quiere que desperdiciemos o acumulemos los

regalos que nos ha dado; Él espera que hagamos nuestros dones crecer, que los usemos sabia-

mente y que seamos generosos con ellos.

Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, Rey del Universo

“…en cuanto lo hicieron a uno de estos hermanos míos, aun a los más pequeños a mi lo hicieron”

– MATEO 25:40

La mayoría de nosotros somos generosos cuando nos es conveniente. Somos generosos cuando

tenemos el tiempo o el dinero. Pero, la generosidad es todo lo contrario a esto. Significa dar

nuestro tiempo, dinero, compasión, perdón, misericordia cuando no es conveniente, cuando no

está en nuestros planes, sino que en los planes de otra persona

“Estén alerta, velen; porque no saben cuándo es el tiempo señalado.” - MARCOS 13:33

Todos subestimamos lo que tenemos. Particularmente, no apreciamos el tiempo que tenemos.

Nuestras vidas son tan ocupadas, muchos de nosotros planeamos nuestro tiempo - nuestros días,

semanas, meses, e incluso años, por adelantado. Recuerde, nuestro tiempo en la tierra es un re-

galo. Ninguno de nosotros sabe cuánto nos queda. Comience hoy y empiece por agradecerle a

Dios por cada día. Tome un momento de silencio, todos los días, y escuche lo que Dios le está di-

ciendo.

“Preparen el camino del Señor…” - MARCOS 1:3

Se nos llama a vivir una vida sagrada. Se nos llama a invitar a los demás a vivir vidas sagradas.

El vivir una vida de servicio, ser generosos y agradecidos con nuestros dones, hace eso - nos po-

ne en el camino hacia la santidad e invita a los demás a ser santos también.


3er domingo de adviento

“Estén siempre gozosos, oren sin cesar, den gracias en todo momento, porque esta es la voluntad

de Dios para ustedes en Cristo Jesús” – 1 TESALONICENSES 5:16 - 18

Esta lectura de las escrituras resume el Espíritu de Servicio. "Estén siempre gozosos" significa

poner nuestra fe en Dios; el proveerá todo lo que necesitamos. "Oren sin cesar" significa que la

oración debe ser una conversación fluida con Dios durante el día, todos los días. "Den gracias en

todo momento" significa dar gracias a Dios incluso en situaciones malas. El sufrir un poquito

ayuda a desarrollar empatía por los demás en situaciones similares.


4o domingo de adviento

“¡Salve, llena de gracia, el Señor está contigo!” – LUCAS 1:28

La Fe es un regalo de Dios. Durante esta temporada de Navidad tome un momento de silencio

para orar a Dios. Agradézcale por todos los regalos que le ha dado. Trate de dejar atrás cual-

quier enfado o resentimiento que tenga y abra su corazón para recibir el don de la gracia de

Dios.

“…Como Cristo los perdonó, así también háganlo ustedes.” - COLOSENSES 3:13

El perdón - una de las cosas más difíciles de hacer. Es increíble en tiempo que podemos pasar

con rencor o rabia contra alguien. Mientras celebramos el festín de la Santa Familia, tome esta

oportunidad para dar el don del perdón a alguien - talvez a alguien de su familia, talvez un ami-

go o un colega o vecino, o talvez a usted mismo. Tome el teléfono o mándele un mensaje ahora

mismo.
