Ceasar and I look forward to a fresh start after the break, with new ways of emphasizing outreach and awareness of community and civics lead by our leadership students— going beyond simple afterschool clubs, to empower and encourage all of ASLA with arc’s participation in the Take Action Campaign (along with many other high schools and middle schools in LA). As the rest of the year unfolds, look out for Kick Butts Day (smoking awareness), Denim Day (violence/rape awareness), and Spotlight On Success (student achievement/involvement in the arts/media). -Christina Chavez, Assistant Site Coordinator arc news

March Recap: This month at arcThis month we’re happy to report that both the ASLA Customs Car Club and Martial

Arts program have caught the interest of students at ASLA. Many of you may have

noticed the class outside of our parking lot—which has now grown into Edward’s

Car Club being held daily after school. Students have been given a unique hands-on

experience with lessons on engines, including various practice techniques on cars

and motorcyles. Edward’s students definitely aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty!

Nick’s Martial Arts program has been

growing, and students have been

taught the fundamentals of self-

defense with Sensei Nick—but more

ninjas are wanted…seriously! I mean,

why wouldn’t you want to learn how

to round-house kick? It could be

useful or fun! Not convinced? Just ask

student Felix Starks—he’s a rookie

ninja, soon to be ‘karate master’!

Volunteer for the Teen Adventure ChallengeWe are now taking volunteers for the Teen Adventure Challenge! If you or your friends

want to give back to a great event, lots of opportunities are available for you to lend a

helping hand. Areas include the adventure elements (kayaking, mountain biking, rock wall),

teambuilding activities, food pavilion, goodie bags, event documentation, and much more.

You will also receive an official Teen Adventure Challenge t-shirt!

Go to the website at www.teenadventurechallenge.com to sign up, and like the Facebook

Students Spotlight: S.O.S. (Spotlight on Success) Performers

Yes, this month there are multiple shining stars! If you haven’t

already heard, as a part of the Student Spotlight on Success held

at Paramount Studios on May 11th, ASLA will be competing &

represented in five different categories among 44 high schools. In

the spoken word/freestyle-rap category will be Osmar Castellanos;

in band/instrumental, Omar Garcia’s guitar band “Under the

Concrete”; in vocals/singing, sophomore Ron Cabb’s band; in DJ-

ing, senior Kyree Jefferson (a.k.a. “Dj-MegaHands”); and in dance,

Jasmin of arc’s hip hop group, P.Y.T’s (“Pretty Young Thangs”).

We’ve got talent—and ASLA will be repping their skills on multiple

stages in front of hundreds of kids, music and entertainment

executives, and even a few celebrities! They have much practice

to put in, but don’t underestimate them—ASLA is bringing it, and

bringing it hard! We can’t wait to see them on stage—drop by after

school and see the stars in action as they get ready!

Shout-Out to arc: Bragging Rights

We don’t brag often, but for the sake of the ‘lighter’ tone of this newsletter, we’re going to—just a little. First, about how great

our Leadership and club-students are, and then to give kudos to ourselves in arc for being pretty amazing (just kidding)!

Silliness aside, arc is very proud to have sponsored the mobile film lab, the first annual Film Festival at ASLA led by Mr.

Carlson; to send our leadership students on two overnight leadership camp trips and the USC college field trip; to support

SRLA in their marathon completion; and finally, to be able to close out the season with our TAC event Kick Butt’s Day!

The film students that were able to produce, direct, and edit their very own films boldly debuted them in front of an entire

room full of teachers, staff, parents, and peers. Now, the films will be able to be shared with the rest of ASLA, which will

hopefully only be the beginning of filmmaking on campus in the future.

SRLA finished yet another marathon—that’s 26.2 miles of dedication, persistence, and pain—finishing a goal that many

wouldn’t even dream of attempting. Mr. Pfeffer, Ms. Eng, and Ms. Dorrance were phenomenal coaches every step of the way

(literally), and arc wants them to know it!
