“Earth without art is just Eh”

We found this quote in the middle of two different articles submitted to us earlier, so we thought that it really matters to our writers. Now what about you, our readers?

Arbor Vitae is back with yet another interesting topic at hand, the one you wouldn’t have found anywhere else! The subject of art is something not usually talked about between medical students, as we usually express our interest more in our field of study...or do we? Everything we do,

we do it with art. If you haven’t realized it yet (you will,) please follow through with the articles in the Current Medical Affair section, you have five of them articles waiting to tell you the reason–why is the medical field a form of art?

Also on this issue is an interview we had with the current Ambassador of Public Health, you can read more about her insights on the Interview section.

Enjoy reading!

Regards,

THE WORLD OF MEDICINE

WITHOUT ART

written by:Ahmad Aulia Rizaly

Some say that “Earth” without “Art” is just “Eh”. If we do the same to “Medicine”, then nothing is changed. “Medicine” without “Art” is still “Medicine”, but is it?

Art is a diverse range of human activities and the products of those activities involve imaginative and t e c h n i c a l s k i l l s . A r t i s t h e representation of reality, the reflection of human mind, most beautiful way to communicate. It is undisputedly the h i g h e s t a c h i e v e m e n t o f o u r civilization. But, what does it have to do with medicine?

To figure this out, let us imagine the world without art. Let’s say, everyone wakes up in a morning and in a sudden, art disappears from Earth, no one has the sense of art, and these are going to happen to us, the people who are living in the world of medicine:

Some say that “Earth” without “Art” is just “Eh”. If we do the same to “Medicine”, then nothing is changed. “Medicine” without “Art” is still “Medicine”, but is it?

1 Say goodbye to illustrations and photographs in your textbooks

Have you ever imagined studying anatomy or physiology without photos or illustrations? Learning to understand every detail in human body by reading only text? Trust me; it is going to suck! You will be bored before you turn the third page and you’ll quit medical school before the first week just because it is too boring.

2 There will be no readable textbooks and scientific posters.

In the world without art, there will be no readable typefaces. Even if there is, no one will know the use of it. Why? Because to make textbooks readable, the skill of typography is required. In other word, art is needed!

3 Say goodbye to your plastic surgeons

Plastic surgery is medical specialty concerned with the correction or restoration of form and function. To reconstruct someone’s body, sense of art of a surgeon is vital. Without i t , i t wi l l be l ike turning a supermodel into Homer Simpson

4 No Art Therapy

Art is also used by art therapists, psychotherapists and clinical psychologists as art therapy. The purpose of art therapy is essentially one of healing. Art therapy can be successfully applied to clients with physical, mental or emotional problems, diseases and disorders. Any type of visual art and art medium can be employed within the therapeutic process, including paint ing, drawing, sculpt ing, photography, and digital art.

5 My mom will be a supermodel

Of course she won’t. I’m just kidding. I write so just to attract reader’s attention

6 Health Promotion will be boring

All these years, we have been seeing many creative ways to promote health, whether it is creative posters or videos. In the world without art, say goodbye to all of those.

Art will never save the world. It may not cure cancer, stop Ebola outbreak, cure Tuberculosis, stop a nuclear war, or decrease the number of poor people on Earth. But it will damn sure make the world beautiful.

ARTDOES MATTER!

Page 13: Arbor Vitae - Eleventh Edition

Every doctor always says the same thing, “Being a doctor is one form of art.” Of course, that sentence is heard a lot in medical school. Somehow, students, like us, sometimes fail to see the art in being a doctor. For those who are in medical school for the art and still fail to see it, this is good news for you, because art is actually the oxygen of medical world.

As soon-to-be doctors, we are very familiar with anatomy books, histology atlas, atlas of the human body, and textbooks with illustrations. Some of us really learn from those pictures and imagine how those would look like in real human. Some of us just like to see those colorful pictures, especially when bored; no, you can’t deny that! Nevertheless, since we memorize pictures much better than texts, we all hang our anatomy exams in our memories of those pictures (may God bless us who are about to face any exams at the moment). Without them, our knowledge is just ashes waiting for wind to drift them off. However, has it ever crossed your mind that those pictures were actually hand-drawn?

Page 14: Arbor Vitae - Eleventh Edition

Yes, they were hand-drawn and printed in your atlas. Amazing, isn’t it? You must think that these people are not regular people; since people need to have a great knowledge in anatomy (if they are drawing about anatomy) to draw an anatomical structure of one’s self. In fact, they need to be doctors first to be able to draw illustrations for anatomy atlas. Then, they need to get a M a s t e r o f A r t s d e g r e e i n Department of Art as Applied in Medicine. You may have never even heard of it, but yes, it does exist. The department, actually, d o e s n o t o n l y p r o d u c e illustrations, animations, or graphics for medical textbooks and at las, but also create prosthetics for patients. We all know how important prosthetics are in the world of medicine; people around the world are using it, maybe even the granny next door uses it.

Unfortunately, not many schools provide this program. Doctors

taking interests in

this department is g e t t i n g f e w e r a n d f e w e r . Therefore, the department is not ve ry we l l -known. Med ica l students these days are more i n t e r e s t e d i n b e c o m i n g specialists or family doctors, even those who used to dream of being an artist. Those who haven’t made their choices don’t even know this department existed. Many claim they like to do art and good at it, but refuse to study art applied in medicine.

Everything has its own advantage and disadvantage. Although not many schools provide the Master of Arts program, people who join the program get jobs rather not very hard. There are so many

Page 15: Arbor Vitae - Eleventh Edition

atlas, books, and textbooks from publishers that need illustrations and these Master of Arts is the best illustrator for medical books out there. Since the program isn’t really opened in many schools, the graduates from the program don’t really have that many of competitors. Not only illustrating by the hand, but also they can draw in computers, making a 3D illustration for an anatomy app. Don’t forget that these graduates can also make prosthetics for prosthetics-producing companies; they get royalty for their design on p r o s t h e t i c s e a c h t i m e t h e company produce what they designed. There are so many jobs available for medical illustrators. The best part is: you get to recall what you’ve learned in school when you’re working! You are still a functioning doctor after all.

If you’re still reading until this paragraph and you still don’t know how much art matters in the world of medicine, you will h a v e t o r e a d t h i s a r t i c l e completely.

Art as applied in medicine is still art in its unique way. Art as applied in medicine loves your c r e a t i v i t y a n d fi n d y o u r

knowledge in medicine very helpful to other colleagues. You can combine your creativity and knowledge of medicine to help your colleagues in learning. If you love art and you love medicine, this is the right track for you.

For those of you who like art, but are not very good at making one, or maybe not very confident about making it, simply making s o m e l e c t u r e n o t e s w i t h schematic but colorful and fun pictures is also a form of art. Since art is the oxygen of medical world, everything a doctor does is art, including how he studies medicine. We can take a look at people posting learning videos for anatomy with them drawing what they learn. Not only they are exploring their creativity in d r a w i n g o r s h a r i n g t h e i r knowledge to the world, but they are also recalling what they already know. Thus, it makes their knowledge stay longer in their memories. Aside from having fun with art, we can get multiple advantages from it too!

N o t o n l y i n t h e f o r m o f i l lustrations and prosthetics where art matters, but also in applying them. For example: have

Page 16: Arbor Vitae - Eleventh Edition

you ever thought how plastic surgeons reconstruct a broken face or a lost ear with a prosthetic? Think of it like this: painters create their arts on canvas, while surgeons create their arts in an operation room, with their patient on an operation bed. See? Both of them are doing art, only the media is different; and actually another important difference is surgeons’ media of art can complain. Broken nose, leg fracture, and ear loss are just some examples of surgeons’ media of art.

So, do you still doubt the sentence “Being a doctor is one form of art”? No need to! Because you can find the essence of art in everything doctors (or medical student) do if you truly understand your purpose in medical school. Even in one form of art, you can find so many types of art if you are devoted to search for them. Art is the oxygen of medical world, and just like in the human body, oxygen is used for so many types of metabolism in human body. We can’t live inside the medical world if we can’t breathe the oxygen in. That is just how much art matters in the world of medicine.

ANATOMY OF THE HUMAN BODY VOL. 1

?!

Page 18: Arbor Vitae - Eleventh Edition

Modern medicine that we know today has always been changing and revolutionizing since the recognition of objective medical practice, as oppose to the time when divination and mysticism had reigned. Medicine has always kept pace with the developing world, whether it is about legal statutory, technology, ethical issues and others.

However, from all these medical revolutions something has never changed, which is the use of medical illustration in the world of medicine. Medical students and medical professionals around the world surely have seen, read and own a copy of a fully illustrated atlas of anatomy or other text books also filled with illustrations. These atlases and text books filled with illustrated pictures of the h u m a n b o d y h a v e h e l p e d countless students and health professionals around the world to understand about the human body. Not only are they important

to medical students and health professionals, but they are also important in providing a better u n d e r s t a n d i n g a n d comprehension to patients or the general public about facts and details that maybe are too subtle for the written or spoken words.

Medical illustration had been found to have first originated during the 3rd century BC in H e l l e n i c A l e x a n d r i a . T h e illustrations were created on sheets of papyrus, and they covered anatomy, surgery and plants that had medicinal properties. The progress of medical illustration a c c e l e r a t e d d u r i n g t h e Renaissance, which was the time of Leonardo da Vinci, an artist, architect and anatomist. During his time, artists inspired by Greek and Roman statues created naturalistic representations of the human figure which was aided by doing their own dissections of cadavers. At the end of Leonardo’s career, Andreas Vesalius a physician began authoring and publishing De Corpus Fabrica Humani in his medical career, the most well-known book of anatomy for its influence. Anatomical figures drawn were often posed gracefully

Page 19: Arbor Vitae - Eleventh Edition

in landscapes of nature or classical architecture, unlike the bare backgrounds of illustrations found today.

According to the Association of Medical Illustrators (AMI) and the John Hopkins School of Medicine, Max Brӧdel an important figure in the development of modern medical illustration, started his career as an i l lustrator for clinicians at John Hopkins. He created illustration work in pen and ink, and later carbon dust, a technique he pioneered, which was widely, used among medical i l lustrators in the twentieth century. In 1911 he presided over the creation of the first academic department of medical illustration which is located at the John Hopkins School of Medicine. Graduates of Brӧdel tutelage

w o u l d t r a n s f o r m m e d i c a l illustrator into a profession, leading to the formation of AMI in 1945. The aim was to create professionals with exceptional scientific background as well as being accomplished artists, since at that time most illustrators were artists without scientific and medical knowledge or they were doctors with limited art skills.

In order to become a graduate of the depar tment o f medical

i l l u s t r a t i o n , o n e s h o u l d concentrate on art and biology for a program of three years. Students are demanded to take art courses which include drawing, painting, color theory and computer graphic design. While science courses inc lude chemis t ry , genera l biology, anatomy, embryology, physiology, and cell biology. Another two-year curriculum is needed to achieve a degree of Master of Arts in Medical and Biological Illustration. These two fields of medical science and art are combined in the form of medical illustration.

M e d i c a l i l l u s t r a t o r s c r e a t e illustrations using traditional methods and also digital graphic design techniques which appear in d i f f e r e n t t y p e s o f g r a p h i c illustration media depending on their purposes. They often create i l lus t ra t ions for books and publications as well as produce animat ions for seminars or lectures. Although much of the medical illustration is used for the printed media, medical illustrators a lso work in 3 -dimensions , creating anatomical teaching models, patient simulators, and prosthetics.

Advances in computer graphics and imaging prompt the creation

Page 20: Arbor Vitae - Eleventh Edition

of newer and better visual aids. As an example subcellular processes that are too small to be seen by the most advanced microscopes can come alive through computer generated animations. As medical a n d s c i e n t i fi c i n f o r m a t i o n periodically expands along with the development of better imaging techniques, the science and art of medical illustration will continue to grow and evolve bringing concepts and methods to life.

There is no doubt that medical illustration helps in the learning and comprehension process. An illustration can highlight the important features of the human s t ruc tu re fo r teach ing and

l e a r n i n g . T h i s g r a p h i c representation is also a very effective medium in transmitting and communicating medical knowledge. Especially for cellular science courses, anatomy courses and surgical disciplines, students rely much on 2-dimensional illustrations and 3-dimensional models to learn. As the saying goes “One picture is worth more than a thousand words.” Therefore, the use of illustration is an integral aspect in teaching, learning and c o m m u n i c a t i o n b e t w e e n colleagues. There will always be a need for medical illustration as long as there are students and medical professionals eager to learn about the human body.

TELOGEN EFFLUVIUMGetting to the Root of the Problem

written by:Chintya Tedjaatmadja

Having beautiful hair is a dream for every woman. We certainly will do any treatment needed to keep it healthy and shiny. And it is undeniable that excessive hair loss can be worrying and sometimes affect our confidence even though the global prevalence of this disorder is quite high.

Telogen effluvium (TE) is the second most common cause of hair loss in women after Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPHL). It is d e fi n e d a s a d i s o r d e r characterized by sudden onset of m a s s i v e s h e d d i n g , approximately 120-400 strands of hair every day.

The etiology of TE may vary. It can be caused by endocrine d i s o r d e r s ( h y p o - o r hyperthyroidism, child birth, miscarriage), stressful events, nutrition (rapid weight loss, c h r o n i c i r o n d e fi c i e n c y ) , intoxication, or drugs.

Hair growth cycle has three phases: growth phase (anagen), termed phase (catagen), and a resting phase (telogen). In TE, an abnormality occurs in one of these phases, which may be a prolongation of the anagen phase, or prolongation or shortening of the telogen phase. The type of abnormality that

Page 22: Arbor Vitae - Eleventh Edition

occur depends on the triggering stimulus. Anagen hairs are prematurely shifted into telogen hairs and the normal anagen/telogen ratio of 90:10 can switch to 70:10.

TE can be diagnosed by anamnesis or using a simple pull test. Pull test positive if there are three or more hairs can be pulled out on different parts of the scalp. We can also use trichogram or phototrichrogram to

quantify the amount of telogen hair. To differentiate TE from alopecia areata, we can

do a scalp biopsy.

The prognosis of TE is good as long as the triggering factors are eliminated. But the triggers may be difficult to identify. Doctors need to deliberate the patient history carefully. TE is reversible and does not lead to complete baldness. It will grow

back around six months after the etiology is eliminated.

Treatments that can be used for TE are different depending on the etiology. Topical

2% or 5% minoxidil solution 1 mL twice daily may be used as additional treatment. It is important to avoid stress, modify lifestyle such as eating behavior and also consume iron supplements.

The newest study also states that caffeine, niacinamide, panthenol, dimethicone and an acrylate polymer (CNPDA) has the potential to be new solutions for ‘thinning hair’. CNPDA is proved can increase the diameter of individual, existing terminal scalp hair fibers by 2-5 micrometers. Fiber diameter of hair itself is another contributor to thinning hair, but it is less often the focus of medical or cosmetic treatments.

“The practice of medicine is an art, not a trade; a calling, not a business; a calling in which your heart will be exercised equally with your head. Often the best part of your work will have nothing to do with potions and powders, but with the exercise of an influence of the strong upon the weak, of the righteous upon the wicked, of the wise upon the foolish”-Sir William Osler

Although medicine has been considered as science, as well as the fact that science rooted from medicine itself, art plays an important role and significantly affects medicine. Dr. Hebert Ho Ping Kong claims that the art of medicine exists with a greater emphasis on the human factor, more importantly, the use of three key human senses namely the sight, hearing, and touch into the doctor-patient relationship in prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Art itself is like a vast tree with various branches filled with creative activity for instance visual arts, music, as well as performing arts. Influenced by culture, society, eras, and more, art itself is influential in the practice of medicine in many ways that medical schools have an opening for a master’s degree in medical art.

For example, the distinguished John Hopkins University’s Department of art as applied to medicine has been in existence since 1911 and teaches

Medical Masterpiece

Page 24: Arbor Vitae - Eleventh Edition

medical illustration until now. Here are a few lists of curriculums for the first year in medical art which consist basic science course, communication media which involves graphic design and photography, illustration anatomy, medical sculpture, pen and ink illustration and digital imaging in 2D and 3D. In the second year, student will study operating room sketching, surgical illustration, ophthalmological illustration as well as doing their research and thesis. The alumni’s works are used in textbooks, websites and even published for National Geographic Medicine. These illustrations have proved to help doctors with visual learning style to visualize for learning and teaching purposes.

Other than illustrations, a video graphic may be used to help improve communication of a disease as how World Health Organization elaborate and shows general public of recent Ebola and measles outbreaks as well as raise awareness and concerns for Vietnamese who suffer from tuberculosis. Besides video, WHO also uses info-graphics to represent information regarding health in a visually simple and straightforward way which helps people to

understand and share to their acquaintances. Other than WHO, many other organization uses info-graphic to explain health problems such as Central for Disease Control and Prevention, and UNICEF.

Lastly, music has also made an impact towards medicine as it is used as a therapy method. According to American Music Therapy Association, music can be used in hospital to alleviate pain in conjunction with anesthesia or pain medication, elevate patients' mood and counteract depression, promote movement for physical rehabilitation, calm or sedate, i n d u c e s l e e p , c o u n t e r a c t apprehension or fear, and lessen muscle tension for the purpose of relaxation which including the autonomic nervous sys tem. Researches published by music t h e r a p y j o u r n a l p r o v e t h e effectiveness of music therapy in improving patient’s condition. In conclusion, art has influences medicine in multiple ways such as i m p r o v i n g s t u d y m e t h o d s , increasing awareness in general public, as well as a treatment method to improve patient’s health.

Q: Can you describe yourself in a few words?

A: I would say I’m someone that is very spontaneous and tenacious! Naturally born as an extrovert, I find myself easy to get along with people, especially when engaging strangers into good friends in conversation. I’m the type of person that’s mostly motivated by challenges and will put everything that I have into what I’m passionate about. People who know me best, say that I’m a go-getter, dedicated, and creative type of a person. Oh, and I’m an ENFJ!

Q: What is your motive for running for the APH? What’s the story of your run?

A: Well, my goal in life is to contribute my skills at a place where I can make differences. Making a better healthcare is one thing that I’ve always passionate about. As future doctor, we have to be concerned to the community around us and try to do something for the benefit and improvement of our community. By being an Ambassador of Public Health you are given the opportunity to lead and represent a group of high-passionate medical students to achieve that goals. Along with that, I believe that being an APH will help me discovered my full potentials and shaping my leadership skills as well as increasing my passion to give more to the society.

Q: In your opinion, what is the most important aspect that essential to be the APH?

A: I would say Motivation and Dedication. Being an APH is more than just a title but a huge responsibility. Despite your busy med-student life you have to be able to manage various projects at the same time. Sometimes it may be hard and stressful to keep all things in track, but back then your strong will and commitment will become your mood booster for not giving up. You have to learn to radiate your positive energy towards others and cheer them up! Beside that, The APH should be passionate and concern with public health issues plus being well acknowledged to the current global health problem.

Q: What is the APH’s role and Job?

A: The Ambassador of Public Health b a s i c a l l y e n g a g e s i n m o s t o f c o l l a b o r a t i o n w i t h N G O s ( N o n -Governmental Organization) as the representative of AMSA-Indonesia. Worked together with fellow APHs, and with the help of Community Outreach and PnP Team, we conducted various social projects that being held in all 6 different districts. The APH will also have to initiate a monthly health campaign (mostly done through social media) based on International Health c a l e n d a r t o i n c r e a s e p e o p l e s ’ awareness towards specific health issues. For example, to commemorate the World AIDS Day, World Diabetes Day , Cancer Prevent ion Week,

Page 28: Arbor Vitae - Eleventh Edition

Tuberculosis day, and etc. To top it all, the APH should actively promote, pioneered and strive to increase the health of this nation.

Q: Can you tell us what kind of experiences you’ve got while you’re being the APH? Anything interesting occurring while you’re doing your job as the APH?

A: Being the APH has been a great opportunity for me. I get to work with loads of great people that broaden my relations and connections, making solid friendships within my fellow ambassadors and friends and develop strong interpersonal skills. Realizing the power of social media I’ think directing a virtual health campaign would be the most productive yet challenging experience. How you prepared the materials, making it understandable and attractive to the society, managed the contents to be fit in beautifully within twitter’s 140 characters, the poster design, video, promotion through any kinds of social media including YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, Line, Path, Facebook, and Friendster (perhaps) are the things I’ll remember most.

Q: What’s your take on the current Indonesia’s public health status?

A: Indonesia is yet to achieve the health-related MDG goals particularly Goals 4 and 5. The health issues of low-to-middle income patients are still prevalent, from maternal mortality to

vector-borne diseases such as Malaria to malnutrition case. At the same time the country is experiencing a surge in degenerative diseases associated with a population that is both ageing and living an increasingly sedentary lifestyle. It has been realized that while emphasizing improved access to services, equal attention also needs to b e g i v e n t o e n s u r e q u a l i t y , comprehensive and integrated health services for women, children and adolescents. Nutrition, a critical common factor in both mortality and morbidity, remains a key public health p r o b l e m ; f u r t h e r t r i g g e r e d b y inadequate food safety and quality. Public health risks posed by tobacco, unhealthy diets, lack of physical activity, unsafe water, inadequate sanitation, traffic congestion; place further demands on the need for integrated health promotion and healthy settings.

Q: How far we medical students can intervene and actually make changes?

A: As medical students we need to start transferring theory into practice that is by reaching out to the community through social services. Promoting healthcare, educating more people especially mothers, and conducting various health projects are few simple-yet worthwhile to do. We must admit that our country is far behind others when it comes to getting actively involved in social movements. Therefore, creative and unique projects are needed to attempt more people to give a hand especially in medical field.

Page 29: Arbor Vitae - Eleventh Edition

Other than keep promoting the public health, I would like to recruit as many people especially the youngster as an agent of change to involve more in promoting the health issues. They don’t need to be a doctor or a medical student first to help making a change, right?

Q: What is your motto you live by?

To be the best me, to follow my destiny and someday be a woman who uses what she was given out of grace; to inspire, to love, to sympathize and to give

Q: What is your hope and Message for the next APH?

Being an APH is not merely about yourself but how you cope with others and use your full potentials for the good of the community. “Remember, coming together as the APH team is just the beginning. Keeping together is progress. But working together is success. Good luck!” At the end of the day I would like to express my utmost gratitude to my family and fr iends who have been very supportive and encouraging throughout the year.To my fellow APHs sisters; Ressy, Triana, Regina, Maulidina, Thalia, Innin and especially our beloved LO for NGOs KaDhanty : Life may be tough.. but we’ll always have each other’s back!

Long live, AMSA-Indonesia.

REALVSVIRTUALSOCIAL MEDIA:

Page 31: Arbor Vitae - Eleventh Edition

e are currently living in a time zone where information technology

has strived drastically and dominated our modern world. Exchange of information has been made easier with the use of current technology in compare with the past where paper and pen were used to share ideas and information. Every second, thousands of information is being shared across the world with the information carrier that travels rapidly at a high-speed in every direction without any pause in the virtual world, making it the busiest traffic known to man. As we all know, we are entering the digital era where nowadays literally everywhere at any moment, you can see almost all people owning a gadget, holding and focusing on it as if the gadget is the only thing in the world that matters. This excessive usage of gadget has somehow created a toxicity mentally to users which is dangerous despite one realizes it or not.

Social media is one of the prominent information technology that let people share information easily and quickly to their family, friends and even to the world, either it could be in the form of text, photos, audios or even videos. In the social media world, people could conveniently share anything that they want like what they feel right now, what ideas up in their mind and possibly share an opinion towards one trending topic. The problem is, that there is no limit in sharing things when it comes to social media, you can post anything you want and you can be as open as like sharing your personal p r o b l e m i n l i f e w i t h y o u r psychologist. Privacy is hard to be kept as that way when people reckless ly expose informat ion regarding their life and daily activities to their social media without putting any boundaries.

There is a general rule in social media which tell that once a person post or update anything in social media, there is no second chance in retrieving it back since it will always be available indefinitely in the virtual world and it can be seen by public directly without you even knowing it. Sometimes, posting or sharing

W

Page 32: Arbor Vitae - Eleventh Edition

information easily without deliberately thinking ahead first could eventually backfire. Such example is when a person feels that posting a photo of drinking shots at a party with their friends seems not a big deal; the photo could be harmful if later seen by an employer while doing a background check.

“May my life someday be as awesome as I pretend it is on social media...”

Another common problem that can be seen often regarding social media is depression. Have you ever found yourself staring at someone profile on social media, stalking their earlier posts or photos for hours, and amazed with how they can have a perfect life to live? Or even following the latest updates of your friends who have just came back after a holiday trip, posting their delicious food photos, while you’re stuck at home and do nothing? Some psychological studies have shown a correlation when it comes to social comparison between peers through social media and their level of depression. Nowadays, the importance of social media is no longer used for communication and networking, but a place where people are able to “show off” their good things, and make people think that their life is as awesome as they pretend it on social media.

Depression levels due to comparing someone's social life with other people will unconsciously affect one's mental health. This may be perceived as not serious matter, but when someone constantly addicted to social media and regard it as a necessity to be equal with others in social aspects, this is the time when

Page 33: Arbor Vitae - Eleventh Edition

social media becomes more dangerous.

The stress and depression which come out as a result of excessive usage of social media is not just about trying hard to build a good picture of yourself in front of people, but it may also lead to loss of confidence. Social media provides a broad network of connections between people around the world. They always find some online friends to chat with, or even just seeing the endless friends’ updates. However, the moment when those kind of person are away from their gadget, they would easily feel lost and lonely. Addiction to social media will make people unaware to their surrounding community and become anti-social. They find it more convenient with their virtual world and become isolated.

Most of social media users feel that they can’t survive without gadget in their hand. This is perceived as if addiction of social media is no di f ferent wi th addict ion to smoking or even drugs. If the addiction is not intervened or halted, the dependence towards

social media will get stronger and stronger by the minute. It is as if gadget is a parasite which stole all of your attention completely away from the reality.

“The more you spend time with it, the less likely you will be able to back into the real world.”

W i t h t h e d e v e l o p m e n t o f Smartphone technologies and varied applications of social media, it is a great importance for us to act wisely towards it. Social media can have an impact on psychological and mental health of a person. Something that was once created for a good purpose must be maintained, it should not give any bad impact for our social life, but develop it for something useful for human being. Therefore, a l w a y s k e e p i n m i n d t h a t technology are built to assist us and for a greater good, not to c r e a t e o u r l i f e w o r s e a n d complicated. So, let’s together log out from our social media, keep away our gadgets for a while and set out to enjoy the real fascinating social life that has awaited us.

Have you ever been gone to an arcade? Then everyone should say yes to it. Arcade is one of the holiday destination to most of the people, especially those who lives in a big city. There are so many kind of games that we can play, whether if it’s a one-player or two-player game, you will always having a good time to be there. But, it is so boring to play the same game over and over again, right? So let me introduce you with these two games that will make you dance! And I bet, you will get addicted to this games.

The games are called “Pump It Up” and “Danz Base”. The first is Pump It U p . P u m p I t U p , c o m m o n l y abbreviated as PIU or shortened to just Pump, it is a music video game series developed by Nexcade a n d p u b l i s h e d b y A n d a m i r o , a Korean arcade game producer. The game is typically played on a dance pad with five arrow panels: up-left, up-right, bottom-left, bottom-right, and a center panel. Additional gameplay modes may utilize two five-panel pads side-by-side. These panels are pressed using the player's feet, in response to arrows that appear on the screen in front of the player. The arrows a r e s y n c h r o n i z e d t o t h e genera l rhy thm or bea t o f a chosen song, and if you want to successfully win this game, you should be able to synchronize the time with your steps accordingly.

Pump It Up’s song list are mostly K o r e a n s o n g o r c o m m o n l y recognized well as K-Pop songs. All the K-Pop lovers should love this game so much. There are many versions of Pump It Up. The newest one is Pump It Up Prime 2015. It’s been introduced, as far as I know, in US, Europe, and Eastern Asia. This game will be introduced in Indonesia for maybe 6 to 7 months later after the premiere launching. The common version of Pump It Up in Indonesian’s arcade are Pump It Up Fiesta EX 2013, Pump It Up Fiesta EX 2011, Pump It Up Fiesta EX 2010, and the oldest version are Pump It Up NX, Pump It Up Rebirth, and Pump It Up Exceed. Interested enough? Now, you can try it by yourself!!! I’d like to give you an advice. First, don’t forget to play the game in full mode so you can unlock all of the songs from the earlier version of Pump It Up to the newest one. And also, you can unlock all of the K-Pop songs that provided by Pump It Up! Second, if you have a plan to play the game with your shoes on, don’t ever use a sneakers or a slippery. But I’d recommend you to take of your shoes and your socks while you’re playing this game. Third, make yourself comfortable while playing such as wearing a shirt and trousers or jogger pants, and don’t forget to bring your own drink! The other one is Danz Base. Danz Base i s a mus ic v ideo game developed by International Games System (IGS). The game was officially

Page 36: Arbor Vitae - Eleventh Edition

unveiled at GTI Asia China Expo 2013, released December 12th 2013 and later in Southeast Asia. Danz Base focuses on realistic (or commonly knows as kinetic game with a camera sensor on the top of the game console) dancing with in-game choreography based heavily on each songs music video as well as the original choreography based on a mixture of any genre of music such as hip hop, pop rock, trance, and many more. Danz Base has over 50 licensed songs, with 2 to 4 new songs added each month including K-Pop, C-Pop, J -Pop, anime soundtrack, and Western songs.

There are 4 levels or modes provided by the game such as easy, normal, hard, and master. But the master mode only unlocked if you get an A to a song that you play on hard mode. A beginner player should try the easy first before trying the normal and hard mode. Unlike Pump It Up, there is no full mode in Danz Base.

There are two ways to play Danz Base. First, you log on your ID and enter your password, and if you don’t have the ID, you need to register first. Or if you don’t want to log on your ID, you can also play as a Guest. There are so many advantages if you logging in while playing Danz Base. First, you can make your level up and you can u n l o c k m a n y i t e m s s u c h a s characters, notes, messages, and many more. Second, the higher your level, the more hidden songs you’d get! Third, you can also play the game in live battle mode! Live battle mode

only provide if you are playing the same song as the other player on the other side of the world. Yes, you can meet new friends from all over the world too!

So, are you ready to play? I bet you will get addicted and would never stop playing those games, just like me! And if you want, you can join the Pump It Up or Danz Base club in your hometown. They usually have their own “show time” to play together. Have a nice play!

It’s been a while since we’ve amazed by EXO’s mini album, OVERDOSE, “Someone call the doctor...” There are two versions of it: Korean and Chinese, with powerful dance and beautiful harmony voices. Many people are guessing how EXO survived after their Chinese members, Kris and Luhan left the group as soon as OVERDOSE has been released.

SM Entertainment as the agency of EXO answering by preparing the new album, known as EXODUS. At the end of 2014 a unique teaser has been released and received a lot of thoughts. There’s none of members at there. Something interesting is there are two points inside a labyrinth symbol of EXO and there are another ten points outside of it. Fans of EXO (a.k.a EXO-L) have a lot of perceptions. Most of them defined that Kris and Luhan will come back, but another says that they will not include in this album.

Therefore, there's no hint for this album around January until February. There just a lot of rumors about it. But, in the middle of March, SM Entertainment dropped out the first individual teaser of Kai. This teaser followed by other teasers of the rest members. Each member has one teaser and also has one mysterious hint that took in different place and time. Actually, the hints are: Colorado-the

Page 39: Arbor Vitae - Eleventh Edition

place of D.O, Arizona-the place of Chanyeol, London-the place of Kai, Lyon-the place of Baekhyun, Marseille-the place of Suho, Edinburgh-the place of Sehun, Barcelona-the place of Tao, Almaty-the place of Chen, Berlin-the place of Xiumin, and Yunnan-the place of Lay. The first letter of the place combined and formed CALL ME BABY which means the main song of their new album called EXODUS.

Finally EXODUS was released at the end of March with 10 track songs: Call Me Baby, Transformer, What If, My Answer, Exodus, El Dorado, Playboy, Hurt, Lady Luck, and Beautiful. Those songs are easy listening. All of the tracks also explains that nowadays EXO come back with 10 members without Kris and Luhan in different atmosphere.

The MV of Call Me Baby also release at noon in the end of March with Korean and Chinese vers ion. I t ’ s d i f fe rent f rom individual teaser before, the MV has strong and powerful feeling. Looks like one take video with luxurious cars as the background. T h e e n e r g e t i c d a n c e a n d expression combined beautifully with their harmonic voices. Although in different side, many fans are disappointed with the fact

that the indoor MV is not as good as the individual teasers.

On April 2nd, they could make different feeling of come back with Call Me Baby, My Answer and Exodus. Not only willing to be romantic person, but also sensual, aggressive and a little bad boy character by Call Me Baby. EXO have proved their existence even though they lose their two member. The MV has been watched over 10 million for Korean version and over 5 million for Chinese version in a week. Fortunately, they catch their first win at Inkigayo just 3 days after their come back and also become the first in many countries.

B e s i d e s t h e a l b u m , S M entertainment is still preparing a mini drama for EXO together with LINE. The tittle is EXO Next Door. Chanyeol, D.O and the other members of EXO are going to be the main characters together with Moon Ga Young. They will act like their real personalities. EXO Next Door contains 16 episodes. This mini drama will be released firstly on April 9th through LINE platform and NAVER TV Cast. Wow! Seems great, RIGHT?! Wanna see or listen? Just call me baby...

Surabaya Carnival Night MarketTaman Bermain ala Suroboyoan

Suroboyo Carnival Night Market bisa menjadi salah satu destinasi l i b u r a n u n t u k k a m u y a n g berdomisili di kota Surabaya dan di luar kota Surabaya.

Page 42: Arbor Vitae - Eleventh Edition

“Rek, mreneo rek, ayo melok aku.Ngejak konco-koncomu, dulur karo tonggomu. Seneng-seneng ndek kene, dulinan sakarepmu”

(Rek, kemari rek, ayo ikut aku.Ajak teman-temanmu, keluarga, dan tetanggamu.Bersenang-senang disini, bermain sesukamu.)

Page 43: Arbor Vitae - Eleventh Edition

Nah, masih bingung mau kemana?

Do you know the most popular traditional food from Yogyakarta?

Gudeg is a traditional food from Yogyakarta. Gudeg is made from young jackfruit, boiled for several hours with palm sugar , and coconut milk and the other additional spices including garlic, shallot, candlenut, coriander seed, galangal , bay leaves , and teak leaves, the latter giving a reddish brown color to the dish. Not only in 'gudeg center', but you can also find this food in every part of the city. Dried gudeg becomes the most wanted gift from Jogja. Gudeg is served with sambel krecek, a stew made of crisp beef skins, boiled egg and chicken. We can eat it for just 7000 rupiah until 50.000 rupiah (depends on the complement food that we eat).

Gudeg not only has one style, but actually, there are three kinds of gudeg, namely dry gudeg, wet gudeg, and gudeg manggar. Wet gudeg is served with yummy coconut milk and it’s very delicious if you consume it with sambal terasi. This kind of gudeg is very nice choice for breakfast. Gudeg

kering (dry gudeg) is cooked longer than gudeg basah (wet gudeg) until the gravy dry and turns into brown. It also tastes sweeter. It can last for 24 hours or more if it is stored in a refrigerator. The most common gudeg comes from Yogyakarta, and is usually sweeter, drier and reddish in color because of the addition of teak leaves as coloring agent. We can find it in gudeg center in an area called Wijilan. Besides gudeg from young jackfruit, Yogyakarta also has gudeg manggar. Manggar means coconut flower that bears a different sensation in this food because this flower has crunchy texture like mushroom. However, the limitation stock of raw material (manggar) makes this food hardly found. Some sellers should close their restaurant and only serves this food with order. There are only several places to find it like in Bantul.

Gudeg has many benefits for our health. As we know, jackfruit is the primary component in gudeg. 100 g of edible jackfruit bulbs provide 95 calories. The fruit is made of soft, easily digestible flesh (bulbs) with simple sugars like fructose and sucrose that replenishes our energy and revitalizes the body instantly. Jackfruit is rich in dietary fiber, which makes it a good bulk laxative. The fiber content helps protect the colon mucous membrane by binding to and eliminating cancer-causing chemicals from the colon. Fresh fruit has small amounts of vitamin A, and flavonoid pigments

such as carotene-ß, xanthine, lutein and cryptoxanthine-ß. Together, these compounds play vital roles as antioxidant and in vision functions. Vitamin A is also required for maintaining integrity of mucus membranes and skin. Consumption of natural fruits rich in vitamin A, and carotenes has been found to protect from lung and oral cavity cancers. Additionally, jackfruit is a good source of antioxidant vitamin C, provides about 13.7 mg or 23% of RDA. Consumption of high vitamin C foods helps the body develops resistance against infectious agents and scavenges harmful free radicals. It is one of the rare fruits that are rich in B- complex group of vitamins. It contains very good amounts of vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), niacin, riboflavin, and folic acid. Fresh fruit is a good source of potassium, magnesium, manganese, and iron. P o t a s s i u m i s a n i m p o r t a n t component of cell and body fluids that helps controlling heart rate and blood pressure. The other component like which are added in sambal krecek also has many advantages. For example chili has substance that is good for antioxidant in our body. Teak leaves besides give color in gudeg, it also c o n t e n d c o n s t i p a t i o n . B u t sometimes you must check your glucose level and cholesterol level to keep your body healthy.

Jadi, secara h a r a fi a h , H o s p i t a l V i s i t b e r a r t i “kunjungan ke rumah sakit”.

Pada tanggal 14 Maret 2015 lalu, untuk p e r t a m a k a l i n y a A M S A - U N S

Tak berapa lama, peserta kembali dipandu untuk menuju ke stase-stase yang ada, diantaranya pediatri d a n f a r m a s i .

Tak cukup dengan tour di rumah s a k i t , p e s e r t a j u g a d i b e r i kesempatan untuk berkunjung ke kantor Palang Merah Indonesia (PMI) cabang Surakarta.

Viva AMSA!

Skill(s): I spent most of my organization experiences in AMSA by working in the Publication and Documentation division, related to Public Relations in AMSA-UAJ and Publication and Promotion in AMSA-Indonesia. Within two years working for AMSA, these are skills and applications I learned from basic. I create poster, shirt, logo, ID card, banner, and bookletcover designs using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Often times I scan my hand-drawn illustrations, made using drawing pen or Sharpies, to those softwares. I made the concept of promotional videos before I implement it using Adobe AfterEffects, iMovie, Final Cut Pro, and

Windows Movie Maker. I use Audacity, SoundForge and/or GarageBand to create and synchronize the background music, narration, or other audio effects as the video enhancement. To enhance the features of my videos, I use Macromedia Flash or Adobe Flash to create animations. I do make programs for questionnaires or surveys using Visual Basic 6.0 or C++. I made a web layout using Adobe Dreamweaver. I had experience on setting up and managing layouts of Tumblr, Weebly, Wordpress, and HTML basic programming.
