Continuing Conversion

We will begin a consecration to Jesus through the Blessed Virgin Mary from April 8 to May 13 using the materials from Thirty Three Days to

Morning Glory. If you would like to join us, the book and participant packet should be ordered before the class begins. A donation of $30 would be appreciated but is not necessary. You will receive a book and workbook and other materials at the first class. We will meet in the conference room at 9:45 after donuts. Call Bonnie at 678-478-8581 or Ginger at 419-549-0235 if you have any questions or for sign up.

Over 50 will meet on April 9 at 6:30. Bring a dish to share or if you don't cook, bring some drinks, all are welcome and encouraged to join us, make some new friends or renew old

aquaintances. See you then !!

Training for Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist has been scheduled.

All Eucharistic Ministers must attend one training session every three years as required by the Archdiocese. If you have not been trained since 2015 or you want to begin

serving, you must be certified to serve or continue serving.

International Festival Please sign-up to bring your favorite dish from your home country to share with the Saint Matthew parish family at the International Festival on May 20th. Sign-up in the narthex on the weekends of April 8th, 15th, and 22nd.

Bring your blankets and stadium chairs, or just lay in the grass. The Knights of Columbus, Mother Teresa council 8972 is hosting an outdoor night at the movies on April 14th at 7:30 PM, after the 5 PM Mass. There will be a concession stand open with popcorn, drinks, and other goodies. We will be showing the viewer’s choice based on your vote. Pick up your free movie tickets in the Nar-thex April 7th and 8th, and vote for your choice of mov-ies. Come on out to the movies with us.

40th Anniversary

When I arrived in Atlanta in 1984, I needed to find a parish to go to church. First, I went to Atlanta to the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and then I found St. Matthew much closer. At that time there was no mass in Spanish, but I did not care that I did not under-stand English very much. My children were small and I also brought them with me because they also needed to make their sacraments. After the years passed, with much effort from the Hispanic community and with the help of the archdiocese, we were able to celebrate mass for the first time in Spanish. At first, we had to go and bring the priest and then take him home after mass. The pastor at that time, Father Caffrey, taught us how to prepare everything for the Mass and how to clean and store everything. There were also no altar servers, lectors, or Eucharist ministries. Therefore, the priest would tell us when he needed help, and I was usually the first one he went to. Masses in Spanish were possible through the help of many Hispanic priests in the area. First it was Fr. Zalazar, then Fr. Vicente Peña, and even once Fr. Zarama, now Bishop. Father Pepe was the one who stayed longer and helped us a lot to establish the Hispanic community in St. Matthew. After a few more years, for the first time we had the joy of celebrating the feast of the Our Lady of Guadalupe and the community began to flourish even more up to what we have been blessed today. — Luz Rodriguez

40 Años de Aniversario

Cuando yo llegue a Atlanta en 1984, necesitaba encon-trar una parroquia para ir a misa. Primero iba a Atlanta a la Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, y después en-contré a San Mateo más cercano. En ese tiempo no avía misa en español, pero no me importaba que no entendía mucho el inglés. Mis hijos los tenía pequeños y también me los traía porque necesitaban hacer sus sacramentos. Después con los anos, con mucho esfuerzo de la comuni-dad hispana y la ayuda de la archidiócesis, pudimos cele-brar misa por primera vez en español. De primero teníamos que ir a traer el sacerdote y después llevarlo a su casa. El párroco en aquel tiempo, el P. Caffrey, nos enseno como preparar todo para la misa y como limpiar y guardar todo. También no había ministerios de mona-guillos, lectores, o de Eucaristía. Entonces el Padre nos desia si necesitaba ayuda y a mí me tocaba ser la pri-mera a quien acudía. Las misas en español fueron posibles atravesó de la ayuda de muchos sacerdotes hispanos del área. Primero fue el P. Zalazar, después el P. Vicente Pena, y una vez hasta el P. Zarama, ahora Obispo. El padre pepe fue el que estuvo más tiempo y nos ayudó mucho a establecer la comunidad hispana en San Mateo. Después de algunos años más, por primera vez tuvimos la dicha de celebrar la fiesta de la Virgen de Guadalupe y de hay fue creciendo la comunidad mas y mas.—Luz Ro-driguez

Youth of the year

Leslie DeSantos was named the Catholic Youth of the Year for St. Matthew's Lifeteen program. She has actively been involved in the youth group for the past four years and showed excellent leadership skills this year when she lead the Core Teen group. She has been a member of St. Matthew since 2006. Her favorite part of Lifeteen is having small groups with the teens and getting to help them grow in Christ. Her faith to her means having an intimate relationship with Christ no matter what may come her way. She says she is extremely blessed to have the resources to maintain her relation-ship with Christ. Leslie is a senior at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic High School and will attend the University of Georgia next year. Congratulations Leslie!

Leslie DeSantos fue nombrada Juventud Católica del Año para el programa St. Matthew's Lifeteen. Ella ha participado activamente en el grupo de jóvenes durante los últimos cuatro años y mostró excelentes habilidades de liderazgo este año cuando lideró el grupo Core Teen. Ella ha sido miembro de St. Matthew desde 2006. Su parte favorita de Lifeteen es tener grupos pequeños con los adolescentes y ayudarlos a crecer en Cristo. Su fe en ella significa tener una relación íntima con Cristo sin importar lo que pueda venirle a ella. Ella dice que es
