Student Media Hosts Concert On Thursday, May 1, the Department of Student Media will host the first ever Lights Out! event. It will be a concert on the Quad stating at 7 p.m. and ending at 9 p.m. This event was planned by Bridget Goedke and Lauren Voytal after they came up with the idea in March 2014, according to Goedke. There will be student performances, taste testings and a bonfire at Lights Out! Most of the preformers will be students that have participated at Mercy Students for Peace and Justice’s Open Mic events. The lineup for Lights Out! includes Amanda Kalas, Joe Williams, Emily Caliendo, Bobby McGrealm, Max Rodriguez, Casey Papp Jamel Williams, and local band Roger This. Starbucks has new drinks for this summer and will be offering samples of those drinks during the event, including new flavors of their popular “refreshers”, according to Goedke. In addition, there will also a bonfire, but students should also bring blankets to lay on and keep warm. The temperature should be in the mid 50s on Thursday night. The Saint Xavier University Improv Club will also preform skits in between musical performances. Goedke said Lights Out! is important because it showcases Saint Xavier University students and local talent and also because this is the first event the Department of Student Media has sponsored in a while.

If successful, Goedke hopes it will become an annual celebration. Students in need of any more

This appreciation towards the honorees was quite noticeable throughout the night as faculty members spoke about the exploits of their students. Senior Paige Jeffrey stated, “I feel so honored to have received SXU’s Outstanding Psychology Student Award. Being a psychology major at SXU has been such a rewarding experience, and it’s nice to know that all my hard work was recognized by faculty and staff.” The statements that were given by faculty towards the honorees contained appreciable stories from the past, and complements towards the growth of the honorees across their time at Saint Xavier University. A total of 24 senior students were honored at the ceremony, and the work that these students put into their fields of study is incredible. As the faculty recounted the times they had worked with the students, the crowd was given a glimpse of the dedication these honored students have for their fields of study. The work of these honored students included independent research, academic excellence, and volunteer work done during their time at Saint Xavier University. As the night of celebration and recollection concluded, one final award was given to a faculty member who had stood out for their work in the arts and sciences. This year’s award went to Dr. Sandra Burkhardt from the Psychology Department of Saint Xavier University. Dr. Burkhardt concluded the ceremony with a meditation of her time at Saint Xavier University, and gave thanks towards those who helped her pursue her academic and research career.

separately, it was proposed to the IllinoisBoard of Higher Education that they would work together to achieve the goals during the grant period. Thus the Chicago Area Consortium for the Redesign of Early Childhood Education (CACRECE) was created. Sondler was a key participant in enabling the creation of the consortium, which consists of four universities and seven community colleges. Mr. Sondler stated, “We’re very excited about this aooprunity we designed a model that we expect will result in a stronger articulation agreement than just between one university and one community college.” When asked what the main goal is in redesigning the Early Childhood Education program here at Saint Xavier Professor George responded, “The main goal of the redesign is to continue to maintain the high quality of the Early Childhood Education program at SXU by bringing our curriculum into alignment with the latest educator licensure standards.” Some other goals that she listed included the following: the enhancing of the effectiveness of the preparation of early childhood educators, the creation of new partnerships of the enhancing of already existing ones between Saint Xavier and two year colleges in an attempt to create an early childhood workforce in Illinois that is highly trained, etc. With the redesign, Saint Xavier’s Early Childhood Education program is going to look different. Professor George explained that, “We may redesign existing courses or create new ones to address the new standards.” Many of the grant activities have already begun, but it is expected that the redesign process should be complete by December

EducationFrom Page 1

2014. This revised program will mirror the latest standards for educator licensure, and will prepare Saint Xavier students in the program to work more efficiently with young children who are English learners. According to Professor George the redesigned program will, “Continue to allow SXU’s teacher candidates access to a high-quality early childhood education curriculum that prepares them for the workforce and ensures that they are better prepared to serve and meet the needs of all their students.” Not only will Saint Xavier be redesigning their program to these new standards, but both Moraine Valley Community College and Richard J. Daley College will also be redesigning their two-year programs. This will allow for Saint Xavier to strengthen its articulation agreement with Moraine Valley and also establish a similar agreement with Richard J. Daley College. These agreements will allow students who complete the two-year programs at either institution to have the proper requirements to enter Saint Xavier’s program to earn a bachelor’s degree as well as their Professional Educator License. “I am personally elated that we have received this support to move the work of program redesign and articulation forward. Although our collaboration is still in its initial stages, I greatly enjoy working with our various partner institutions. We are having a lot of rich conversations and discussions about what good programs look like and what high quality teachers who enter the field of early childhood education should know and be able to do. It has been a lot of hard work so far, but also extremely rewarding!” George stated when asked her personal feelings concerning the redesign. With this grant comes new changes here at Saint Xavier that should prove to be rewarding for the future educators of Illinois.

Saint Xavier University will be hosting its annual Taste of SXU fair on Wednesday, April 30. The event will be held at the Shannon Center parking lot between 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. and will feature numerous food vendors. The Taste of SXU marks one of the most anticipated end of the year celebrations at Saint Xavier University. As well, the Taste of SXU is an event funded by the Student Activity Fund and sponsored by the Saint Xavier Council. Many of the students who attend the end of the school year celebration, take part in the many food tastings from restaurants around campus and the Saint Xavier community. One of the biggest draws of the event is the sheer variety of food made available at the event. The planned vendors include some on campus locations, local neighborhood food establishments, and the infamous food trucks. For a campus full of hungry students with dwindling dining dollars by the end of the semester, the Taste of SXU offers a great opportunity to grab some grub. Admission to the event is free for students, which is meant to encourage a high student turnout. For faculty and staff members at Saint Xavier, a five dollar charge will be necessary in order to gain admission into the tasty event.

Jake AlleruzzoNews Correspondent

The overall event boasts giveaways that including a free t-shirt, something any student would love to adorn. There also will be plenty of music and fun events planned during the three hour food extravaganza. Students who are planning to attend will have plenty to taste and dance about as the day progresses, and local weather has

shown that early Wednesday may hopefully be clear of rain showers. Saint Xavier student and Junior Education Major Marissa Melvan is looking forward to the event on Wednesday and hopes the weather holds up for the day. “I am hoping it doesn’t rain, I really enjoyed the warm weather last year and the food variety available.” stated Marissa when

speaking about the Taste of SXU event. Even with the weather still up in the air, the Taste of SXU should turn out to be another successful and fun filled event where students can get their food fix before the semester’s end. Be sure to attend the event Wednesday and celebrate of the most anticipated events at Saint Xavier University.

The Crusader of SanityIn defense of the comic book as literature

Readers, I’m a comic book fan. Now, I don’t mean that in any sort of “I’m-a-superhero-enthusiast” kind of way.

No. I love the art of comic literature. And some of it is just that – literature. And that’s not just limited to the standard defenses of comic book culture – Alan Moore’s/Dave Gibbon’s “Watchmen” comes to mind as well as Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight Returns.” Great works. Incredible. They’re the best gateways for anyone who has never picked up a comic in their life to find a way into the world of slash panels, speech bubbles and heroes in ink. Not only that, they also make commentary on the world as it is, or rather as it was (both works were published in the mid-to-late 80s). Almost more importantly than being great commentaries, they prove that comics can indeed rise above pulp and become the modern mythical literature of our time. “The Dark Knight Returns” is a not-so-veiled criticism of Ronald Reagan’s presidency set against the backdrop of a weary Gotham City and an even wearier

Batman who, at age 50, is teetering on suicidal. “Watchmen” is a scathing critique of Cold War politics drawn through a lens of super-anti-heroes who, despite having been outlawed by the government, still fight for justice in their own twisted way. It’s a daring book that questions the entire superhero mythos by asking “Who’s watching the Watchmen” or “Who is watching those who say they are heroes and are protecting us.”

Why do I stress these two works? Well, first, they’re both widely regarded as two of the greatest graphic novels of all time. Second, they validate a medium that I think is often thought of as a children’s medium. I’m not going to say that comics aren’t for kids. I understand that the general audience for most comic books is 9-12 years-old. But there are adult works out there; they should be sought out and read by all who want a colorful way to experience the most

underrated form of popular literature. (P.S. Both “Watchmen” and “The Dark Knight Returns” should be read by mature readers only.) We value superhero movies in our society, but for some reason the books themselves have a nerd-stigma about them. Why is it OK that a person can go see Captain America: The Winter Soldier and it can make a gazillion dollars world-wide, but reading a Cap comic could brand someone a dork for life? Some of the most valued social criticisms/apologies/analysis I’ve ever read have been done through the art of the comic book. Chris Claremont’s/John Byrne’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past” is probably one of the most fun exploration and criticism of post-JFK politics that has ever been put to paper. “Batman: No Man’s Land” (varying writers and illustrators) is a gripping and sorrowful lament of the US government’s inept handling of natural disasters both at home and around the world. Let’s just be honest, the fact that graphic novels have pictures give some people the opinion that these books cannot contain gripping words and engaging stories. I’ve read comics with more depth and attention to large societal needs than quite a few works of “classic” literature. So before you think that comics are just kid stuff, remember that there are brains behind the pages of some of those books.

It was announced this week that hackers have found a way to implement bugs into the browser Internet Explorer. There is no patch for the moment, but according to the article by John Finkle from Reuters “US Government Suggests that You Switch from Internet Explorer,” it is suggested that perhaps you pick a different online browser for the time being. According to the article, this bug could allow for hackers to actually to take “complete control” of an infected system. Mostly, the reports are coming from businesses, not from personal use. However, it is always important to keep in mind that these things have a way of getting out of hand and spreading from corporate problems into affecting the average folks who are simply using the online portal for their personal enjoyment and entertainment. Finkle’s article stated that hackers might already be trying to predict what this patch might be so that they can jump ahead of the Microsoft company and try to thwart any preventative matters from these patches.

That is why the key suggestion at this time is to try to steer clear from using Internet Explorer and switch to another browser. The upcoming Microsoft patch will not be available for users of Windows XP as Microsoft is trying to make an effort to phase out that equipment. Of course, the question that comes up in these situations is why are there people out there who feel that they must use their incredible computer skills for less than noble purposes instead of applying these skills to better digital communication in an ever expanding digital world? Last week we informed our readers about a bug called Heartbleed and this week, we are writing about breaking news of hackers trying to use Internet Explorer. It would seem that cyber crime is on the rise. The troubling part is, it seems that we have no way of dealing with these things until they land at our front door. In the real world, you can take actual, physical preventative measures to make sure that your interests are protected, but when

it comes to the internet, we are dealing with a world of crime that we have never known before, and it is coming back to bite us. So what are we to do? Well, following the guidelines set by the government is a good first step. Switch your browser until Microsoft releases the patch for this Internet Explorer bug. Other than that, it seems that the only sound advice to be given in this sort of situation would be to tell you the readers to remain ever vigilant. Don’t click on any suspicious links or visit any suspicious websites. Don’t follow links from any unsure email contacts. Make sure that security measures on your computer are up to date and functioning properly. These measures may seem small, but they go a long way in preventing anything terrible from happening to your device or your personal information. Unfortunately, this seems to be the world that we live in and from time-to-time we’ll have to deal with hackers.

New internet bug to be aware of

The College DiariesThe most important pages of my diary

As this semester comes to a close, I write my last article of my sophomore year. I have a done a great deal of learning this year, in every way. It is fair to say that through writing my column and everything I have endured in the past year, I have developed, altered, and strengthen several “viewpoints”. So, what better way to close my column for this academic year than to share some of my final and most important viewpoints of the year. First, life is short. As many of you probably know (and if you don’t, I am about to tell you) my father passed away suddenly at the beginning of June. I am sure many people have been waiting for or expecting me to write something about this but I find most of the time, it’s more than I could ever put into words. Nonetheless, here is my attempt. My Dad wasn’t sick and he wasn’t suffering, he woke up completely healthy and normal the day he died, none of us were expecting what occurred that night. Up until that night I, like many others, fell into the trap of thinking we had all the time in the world.

You picture your life and without a second thought you picture your family right there with you, at every stage and every step. I am not saying that it is at all wrong to do that, envisioning the future is a beautiful thing, but I’ve learned the hard way that the things you think are a guarantee are in fact, not. It’s important to recognize that. I’ve learned that every single day that I wake up, I already have a gifted denied to many. Every time I hear the voice of my mom, or brother, or sisters on the other end of the phone line or get to hug them or even spend the smallest amount of time with them is important to me now. Those are moments I will never have with my Dad again. I hope with my whole being that most women my age will have their parents around for a long time to come. I hope that your fathers will walk you down the aisle, you will see your parents smiling faces in the audience when you graduate from college and they will be your first phone call when you get your dream job and that your mom and dad will meet your children. But, I also hope that we learn to hug our parents a little tighter, skip a few nights at the bar and watch a movie with your dad, call them a few extra times during the week and argue with them as little as possible. And most importantly, tell them you love them every chance you get. As Buddha once explained so profoundly, “The trouble is, we think we have time.”

The second viewpoint that has become quite important to me over the past year which also stems from my father’s passing (I find that most things do now) is best illustrated in a quote from the movie Country Strong “Don’t be afraid to fall in love. It’s the only thing that matters in life. The only thing. Fall in love with as many things as possible.” Nothing could be more true. And I’m not just referring to the love you share with the guy you’ve been dating for a month. I mean everything, love everything and everyone you can. I try to make it a point to fall in love with as many things I can every day whether it be my family, my job, writing, my friends, nature, strangers I’ve just met, music or life itself. I’ve experienced so much grief and pain recently but it has made the love so

much more important. As explained by Alexandra Elle “I’ve been hurt so bad and I still love so hard. I admire my heart for that.” Love is the only thing that matters, the only thing. To close, if these thoughts or anything I’ve written this year in my column has changed even one mind, influenced one life or simply made someone realize that there’s someone else out there thinking or feeling the same thing they are, I will consider this year of journalism a success. I hope everyone has enjoyed reading my column as much as I have enjoyed sharing my life and ideas with all of you. I will leave you with a simple thought from one of me and my father’s favorite movies, “Meatballs” …..are you ready for the summer?

“Don’t be afraid to fall in love. It’s the only thing that matters

in life. The only thing.Fall in love with as many things

as possible.”- Country Strong

The Cougar PulseHealthy foods that can actually be bad for you

As Americans seek to lose weight and be healthy they often seek nutritious foods that are known to be healthy. While these foods are certainly good for you, they are only good in moderation. Here is a list of foods that we understand as healthy, as well as a description of why they are healthy and how overconsumption can be bad for you. Olive Oil is quickly replacing butter and other cooking oils due to its heart healthy properties. It is high in monounsaturated fatty acids that have been known to lower cholesterol and your risk for heart disease. Although this is seen as good fat, too much olive oil can sharply increase the amount of calories in the food that you cook. Juices are popular for the obvious reasons of the vitamins and minerals that you get from consuming them. They are a quick and easy supplement for soda and other unhealthy beverages. According to nutrition and wellness coach Lara S. Sutton, “juicing removes the pulp from the produce, [but] it’s also removing the fiber that keeps you full.” When we are not full we will continue to consume whatever it is we are drinking or eating. When you do this with juice you are drink a lot of extra calories and high amounts of sugar. It is much healthier to eat a whole fruit

rather than its juice counterpart. Nuts such as almonds and cashews are seen as a go to healthy snack food. While these nuts are full of protein and fiber, they are also made up of nearly 80% fat. Most of us do not consume the recommended serving size on most snacks such as nuts, and this can lead to high amounts of fat in your diet. Nuts are also usually coated in salt which leads to higher sodium intake, and can diminish the reality in your goal of eating a healthy snack. Sushi is a type of food that I particularly

love. Not only is it high in omega-3s from the seafood, it also tastes amazing. I can easily eat 30 pieces of sushi in one sitting, but when I do this I am also exposed to the toxic heavy metal mercury. Too much mercury can have a negative impact on the nervous system. If you simply cannot eliminate excess amounts of sushi from your diet, like myself, then you must know it is safer to consume sushi with shrimp, eel, and crab, because they have lower levels of mercury in them. Green Tea is a famous beverage known for its health benefits such as weight loss and the antioxidants that help prevent

many diseases. Although it is used to relieve headaches, nausea and diarrhea, overconsumption of Green Tea can actually make these symptoms worse. According to WebMD, green tea can also reduce your body’s ability to absorb iron from your food. Iron helps your red blood cells deliver oxygen from the lungs to other cells all over your body. Whether you eat healthy or not it is important to eat your favorite foods and drink your favorite beverages in moderation. Because even the healthiest foods in the world, such as the ones listed above, can actually have the opposite affect on your weight and health.

From all of us here at The Viewpoints Section, we’d like to wish you all a happy, healthy, and safe summer.

See you next fall.

Your Guide To

Summer Music Fests

When: June 13-15Where: Soldier Field, Chicago EDM is all the rage right now. If you want to join the trend, maybe you should consider going to Spring Awakening. Think of it as a massive three day rave with all of the most popular DJ’s. Some of the headliners this year include: Tiesto, Kaskade, Knife Party, and Pretty Lights. If none of those strike your fancy, there are about 85 more DJ’s that might be more your style Swinging your glow sticks and listening to repetitive beats isn’t going to be that cheap though, you better be ready to cough up $235 if you want to attend all three days. Maybe the soon to be announced after parties will be able to ease the pain of the big ticket price.

Spring Awakening

SummerfestWhen: June 25-29 and July 1-6

Where: Henry Maier Festival Park, Milwaukee While Summerfest is not quite Chicago, if you’re looking to take a road trip this summer, the lineup for this festival is well worth it. Even if you and your friends have completely different tastes in music, you will all be able to find a musical act that will leave everyone in high spirits. From Tegan and Sara to Girl Talk to Ludacris and so much more, this really is the “world’s largest music festival”. You really have to check out the full lineup to see just many people will be performing at this thing! Go to www.summerfest.com and look under “Lineup”. While you’re at it, look at the ticket prices! This has to be one of the most inexpensive big name music festivals I have ever seen. For a one day general admission pass, you’ll only have to spend $17 and if you feel like going all out and attending all 11 days of the fest, it’ll only cost you $70. No joke!

Your Guide To

Summer Music Fests

Taste of ChicagoWhen: July 9-13

Where: Grant Park, Chicago Sure, the Taste isn’t really a music festival, but considering they have five nights of musical acts, I figured that it was worth mentioning. Spread across five days, some of the musical acts include Gary Clark Jr., Janelle Monae, AWOLNATION, Aloe Blacc, and Jeff Tweedy from Chicago’s very own Wilco. Admission is free, but if you want to grab a seat in the Petrillo Music Shell, you’ll have to wait until May 22nd to purchase a ticket. The full lineup can be found on www.tasteofchicago.us. Grab a $20 slice of pizza and listen to some sweet tunes surrounded by plenty of sweaty people.

Pitchfork

When: July 18-20Where: Union Park, Chicago Do you like to hang out with hipsters and feel like you are better than everyone else? Are you really into pretending you know who Majical Cloudz and Ka are? Well then, Pitchfork Festival is the place for you! Just think about their music reviews coming to life and materializing into bad denim diapers and cuffed skinny jeans. This year’s lineup consists of some “okay” bands mixed with a lot of people that I have never heard of before. Then again, I guess I’m not indie enough. Headliners this year include: Beck, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Kendrick Lamar. Luckily Pitchfork hosts a smattering of hip-hop acts such as Pusha T and Schoolboy Q to complement their super totally underground bands. Luckily, the fest is only moderately expensive. $120 for all three days or just $60 a day. Tickets are on sale now.

Desperately trying to stay alternative, while still playing everything one hears on Top 40 stations, Q101 is throwing a PIQNIQ. Headliners this year include Linkin Park, Thirty Seconds to Mars, and AFI. They have yet to announce any of the other bands that will be playing, but looking at last year’s lineup, they will probably try to snatch up some of the one hit wonders that they constantly play on their station. The ticket prices range from $45 (for lawn seats) all the way up to $355 for the seats behind the pit.

I find it difficult to try to put four years of hard work and memories into just 400 words, but I’ll try. I joined The Xavierite at the very beginning of my first year of college. I can still remember sitting in the office for the first time wondering what to expect. I could have never known that joining the school paper could have had such a profound effect on me. During my four years here, I have had so many opportunities to do amazing things. I have been able to attend the ICPA Awards three times, do an interview with the author of a book about “zombie gardening,” and be featured as a “Student You Should Know” in the SXU Alumni Magazine. There are so many things I have accomplished, including winning two ICPA awards, designing and laying out a 12 page yearbook issue as well as several of the FOCUS editions of the paper, and improving my skills as a writer. Looking back, I would like to think that I have made an impact on The Xavierite, its staff and its readers. I have poured my soul into this paper for the past four years (I mean, come on, it’s practically a horcrux), and I would like to think that it shows in each issue.I have made so many friends, and that is what I will miss most of all. For the past four years, I have been part of a constantly growing and changing family,

and I will be sad to have to move on and join the adult world, just like those who went before me. However, I do feel confident in The Xavierite’s future. I will be passing the torch on to Brian Laughran, just like Editor in Chief Emeritus Tony Bara passed it along to me last year. I would like to thank everyone at the paper, especially Pete, Tony, and Brittany for their support throughout my time here, and I’d like to wish next year’s staff the best of luck. I’m sure I’ll be seeing you around.-Becki

Friends, Chicagoans, Students lend me your ears. My time here at Saint Xavier has been invaluable in shaping the person I have become. Looking back at the last four years I feel that I have had many great experiences and gained friendships that will last far beyond my time here. Here at Saint Xavier I received a wonderful education in both the Criminal Justice and Communication programs. I feel that the projects and work that I have done

during the last four years have prepared me for any future career I may hold. Becoming a part of the Paw Prints Dance Team here at Saint Xavier had a huge effect on my last two years here. I became more involved on campus and met some extremely wonderful teammates who have become my friends. This last year as a member of The Xavierite has had an enormous effect on my work ethic and understanding of what it means to work in a professional setting

as a team. Not only that but everyone was so friendly and supportive it was like becoming a member of a family. The Saint Xavier community has inspired me to better not only myself, but also the area around me. It is my goal to be known not only for my work ethic and career but, also, for how I live in my day-to-day life as the member of my community and family. I feel that Saint Xavier has given me the tools to move forward and live in such a way. It’s time for us seniors to move forward with our lives and enter into the real world where interviews, bills, and budgets await us. So good luck to everyone and may the future hold wonderful surprises with lots of amazing experiences ahead.-Catlyn

Hey there, everyone! I’m just going to say two things before I say farewell to you all. One, I am bad at writing letters. Two, I hate saying goodbyes. During the last four years here at Saint Xavier, I’ve learned a lot. Whether it was in the classroom or from my peers, it feels like I have some preparations for the real world. (But who am I kidding? No one is ever ready for that.)

Sometimes, though, I just wish I could stay another year but the real world is never going to leave and I’ll have to face it eventually. What I’ll miss most graduating from SXU on May 10? My friends, for sure. Some of them, I have known all four years. Others I’ve only known for the last year. Through thick and thin, each of my friends has been here for me in one way or another in support and I for them.

And that’s something that will last a lifetime. Thank you, everyone. (You know who you are. Haha.) But I have also worked here at The Xavierite for the last two years. The office has always had a cast of characters, and it has been fun working with my coworkers. I’ll miss the rush of everyone trying to hit that deadline. The sass everyone gives off, with some having more sass than others. To you, I say thanks for making work super enjoyable! And to everyone else that I’ve met at Saint Xavier, thank you!-Brittany Klyczek

Dear SXU Peeps, Oh Saint Xavier University, I sit here writing this letter in remembrance of my experience here at Xavs. I originally did not start my college career here but I am glad I finished it here. I have gathered much knowledge in my time at SXU both academically and in my growth as a human being. It is not the school I will miss as much as the community and the people I have met. It didn’t matter who it was. I seemed to find people inspiring me to take on new experiences and new challenges. Awakenings is a retreat offered by campus ministry to students and I was so glad to be apart of it as words cannot describe the positivity and joy it evokes in you. I was inspired at first by my girlfriend/love of my life to go and then eventually inspired by my roommate. It was an amazing weekend and I will miss the people I was fortunate enough to share that experience with and also the two people who inspired me most to go. I will miss the professors that taught me so much about communication and especially my colleagues at The Xavierite. I think everyone knows my love of sports and I loved writing for sports at The Xavierite my senior year because my dream is to be sportswriter. I will miss the entertaining times we had in The Xavierite office especially on press night and all the conversations we had that made being there so much fun. I loved spending time with

my friends at SXU from random dance parties to wild jokes to bonding over the terribleness that is Chartwells’ food. The individuals I got close to here supported me to through my ups and downs. Whether it was my girlfriend taking care of me after food poisoning or my suitemate driving me to the DMV at seven in the morning, I felt support everyday. I enjoyed my conversations with Rae Joyce, my advising appointments with Dr. Sternberg, and the advice about my career I received from Peter Kreten. Xavs wasn’t perfect but for about 32 months out of the past three years it was my home and for better or worse I will miss every moment being an SXU Cougar.-Damone

Super Friends Finally Unite On Screen This week it was announced that a Justice League movie was finally in the works and that terminal bachelor George Clooney was engaged. Now guess which one of these is a rumor--I’ll give you a hint: it doesn’t come with batnipples. On April 27, The Wallstreet Journal reported that Warner Bros. president Greg Silverman has confirmed that Justice League will shortly follow-up Batman vs. Superman in 2018; as with Man of Steel and its sequel, Zack Snyder is returning to direct. I’m sure most fans believed the likelihood of George Clooney returning as Batman and simultaneously getting married was much higher than seeing a Justice League team up before they died. This, however, is not the first time studios dipped their feet into the seemingly lukewarm waters of Justice League. Several years ago, Warner Bros. along with director George Miller (best known for Mad Max and Happy Feet) tried their hand at it but eventually shelved the project around 2007 due to ensuing script and financial issues. For those that loathe the idea of Ben Affleck in the role it can also be said that they dodged a bullet. Miller’s incarnation of Justice League would have seen Armie Hammer (The Social Network, Lone Ranger) don the cape and cowl. The idea of it almost makes me nauseous; it is almost as appealing as Nicolas Cage in Tim Burton’s fair weather Superman. Rememeber that...no? That’s because it was canned, too. Now fans are speculating (hopefully jokingly) that frequent collaborator and best friend to Affleck Matt Damon will go up for the part of Aquaman, pitting him against Game of Thrones alum Jason Momoa

who is rumored to be in talks with Warner Bros./ DC for an unknown role. If this idea is coming from the same source that suggested some months ago that Damon play the Robin to Ben Affleck’s Batman, then it is clear that there is no substance to it. All of this news both justifies and arrives on the heels of the insertion of a Cyborg (to be played by Broadway performer Sam Fisher) cameo into Man of Steel sequel titled Batman vs Superman, providing confirmation that the hotbed of shady casting decisions was for a specific reason.

Zhana JohnsonFeatures Correspondent

With production secrets and information being shut so tight behind the wall that is the DC/Warner Bros. team, various sources have only been able to release specualtive stories about the trajectory of DC’s future cinematic universe. As production for the sequel has been pushed back it could only be infered that the team was secretly doubling up on projects in order to shoot them back to back. If that is the case then Justice League will be more likely to wrap in 2017. Of course, all of the actual confirmed

dates are to subject to change with the projected release being so far away. With Snyder at the helm it’s clear that this isn’t your dad’s “Super Friends”. Millions of people will probably die again, most likely by building rubble or alien invasion. Children are going to be crying in theatres but it will be awesome. At this point, DC and Warner Bros. are not obliged to do anything except take up their own solid formula for how they will continue and hopefully stop releasing movies five years out. While their films are enjoyable, Marvel is not as considerate of quality as it is with quanity. If a website forum makes another post about DC rushing to the punch or needing to follow Marvel’s lead, I think I might punch a hole through the metaphorical wall separating the two properties. At the rate that WB is pumping out DC movies it would be a completely left-field statement to say the company is rushing the excecution of their respective films. If the pacing of the formula is any indication of where the universe is headed then fans should be reassured that the producers are in no way jumping the gun. No one, at any point in the conceptualization of the DCU, has rushed anything and if they are someone needs to slap them across the face with a Merriam-Webster dictionary with the page opened on the definition of rushed. This news, while not surprising, could not have come any sooner. That being said, it feels like 2 in 4 movies that release every other weekend now have to do with some angst ridden guy and his superhero struggles. Justice League now marks the 14th comic book movie set to release within the next 4 years. It is a heroes world, we just happen to live in it.

Will Justice League be just okay? bkbn.net

Dear Lauren, All of my friends are graduating this May, but I won’t be graduating until December. What should I do?

Sincerely, Forever Alone

Dear Forever Alone,

I’m sorry to hear that all of your friends are graduating before you and leaving you in the dust, but I’m sure you can make it one more semester without seeing them in the hallways. You know, just because they are graduating, it doesn’t mean that you can never see them again. I’m sure most of them would be perfectly willing to meet up with you for a cup of coffee or for dinner. Or

maybe even just to hang out, because they aren’t dead, they are just past another part of their lives. You also could take this last semester to maybe make a few new friends or rekindle old friendships with people you may have fell out of touch with. Or the last option I can give you is to just keep your head down and study hard so you can get the most out of your last semester. Good luck and remember to always listen to Lauren!

Letter from Lauren: I would just like to say thank you for all of your submissions over the past year. And even if you did not send a question, I hope that some of my advice helped you if you found yourself looking for answers to questions you didn’t even know you needed answers to...or something like that. I have enjoyed pretending to play therapist for all of your problems and hopefully my successor will take his or her shot at a sarcastic and sometimes helpful advice column. Have a fantastic summer.

A Conversation About RacismDamone Griffin

Sports Editor

A rich Caucasian makes racists comments while talking to girlfriend over the phone about her pictures with an African-American. It sounds like a sort of interesting plot line or twist in a plot line for maybe Law and Order. I could actually sit in my lazy boy on a lazy Saturday afternoon and get into a story like that. The problem is this wasn’t a TV show plot it is part of the sad reality we unfortunately still live in. This past weekend a recording of a conversation between Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling and his girlfriend, V. Stiviano, was leaked by TMZ to the rest of the world. Normally TMZ just reminds me of the obnoxiously crazy little brother of the TV network E! and, therefore, should just be ignored but this time little brother found out disturbingly incriminating information. In the recorded heated conversation with his girlfriend Sterling is heard making racist statements against minorities specifically African Americans. You could tell in the conversation that he was extremely upset that she posted a picture of herself with retired basketball great Earvin “Magic” Johnson. He did not say the N-word during the now infamous audio clip but he did utter statements such as, “Ya it bothers me a lot you want to promo… broadcast that you’re associating with black people” and “… I want you to love them-privately. In your whole life everyday you can be with them… But why publicize it on the Instagram and why bring it to my games.” The “them” and “it” he is referring to

is a whole race of people many of them not only fans of the NBA, his team included, but also coaches and players that he employs on his team. So here we have an owner of a professional basketball team in a league that is about 80 percent black with millions of other black fans and the question is what should NBA commissioner Adam Silver do about this egregious and embarrassing situation that now casts the darkest of dark shadows over the playoffs? I am an African American and a huge fan of NBA since I could even hold a basketball so maybe I am biased in my opinion but I believe Donald Sterling must be forced out of the league at this time. Temporary suspension of this owner after his comments is a quick fix but this situation needs more than just a quick fix with some gum and duct tape. It needs swift immediate action with a sledgehammer maybe even a crowbar to remove a character with the vile ideals of Donald Sterling from the ultra inspiring and obviously racially diverse NBA. The other owners, coaches, and players must do whatever they can to communicate the message that Sterling and people like him are not welcome in their league. I realize it is not simple to remove billionaire from a team that he has built as a contender, but if the NBA cares about the ongoing fight against racism they will openly make no qualms about getting Sterling out. His past is now being examined more by everyone interested in the situation and a lot of stories about his mentality as seemingly a “slave owner” in his business practices but there wasn’t much factual damning proof to back up these claims. I never thought I would give a shout out to TMZ but I will shout them out to the

top of my lungs at this moment for giving the public the factual proof needed to get rid of this seemingly racist figure from the NBA. Magic Johnson tweeted after he heard the recording that “he will not attend another Clippers’ game as long as Donald Sterling is the owner” and I’m sure other black people share his sentiment. Even though apparently it sounds like Sterling would get his wish of “them” not being at his games can you imagine former five-time Laker icon Magic Johnson not being welcome at a LA sporting event. The thought is ludicrous just like the idea of Sterling still being allowed to own a basketball team anywhere. Anyone can say it is just a sport and how much does a rich white man’s comments really matter at the end of the day? They do matter because individuals such as Jackie Robinson, Ernie Davis, Don Haskins, Roberto Clemente and every single athlete who has been a part of the fight for racial diversity and equality in sports did

not fight so owners or people like Donald Sterling could still inject racist venom into a still growing league. Chris Paul, Doc Rivers, and Blake Griffin were brilliant moves by Sterling to elevate this team from last place bottom dweller to true title contender which all Clippers’ fans and observers must salute him for from a basketball standpoint. As big a sports fan as I am, even I realize there must come a time where we must not put sports first. Dignity, pride, identity, and just doing the right thing must be on the agenda of a league such as the NBA in order to communicate the right message to fans. Sterling showed his true disgustingly ugly colors to the world and now the NBA must show its true colors. Better yet, or more to the point, they must show that color for the billionth time to any other billionaire and their legions of followers that what’s true is not the color of the skin but the person that lies within.

Donald Sterling faces his day of reckoning. titletownnews.org

2013-14 Stanley Cup Conference Semi-Finals Coming Up! Hawks Eliminate Blues!Frank Markasovic

Unfortunately, this will be our last issue of the Xavierite for this spring semester. I hope you have enjoyed these NHL articles and I wish that you will stay tuned in the fall for some more! Let’s cut to brass tacks. The first round of the 2013-14 Stanley Cup Playoffs are almost over. Some teams have already advanced to the next round and others are in the process of completing that feat. Though this article is written prior to the games completed after April 28, 2014, I will do my best to cover the series that have not yet been completed as of this date. As of writing this article, five of the eight series have been completed in NHL playoffs.

2013-14 NHL Playoffs Update

Western ConferenCe

In the West, the dust has settled for Chicago and St. Louis. Chicago, although they went through a rough start, won the series in six games. St. Louis capitalized in their first two games at home as they survived two third period Chicago leads by tying the game in the last remaining seconds of each game. After sending the first two games into overtime, St. Louis scored in each overtime giving them a 2-0 lead in the series. The Blackhawks returned to Chicago and won their next two home games, tying up the series. Shortly thereafter, the Blackhawks would take down the Blues in St. Louis and again in Chicago to clinch the series. I firmly believe that if these two Western Conference powerhouses were on

opposite sides of the bracket, they would surely meet in the Conference Finals. St. Louis had a spectacular season, but a spectacular post-season, they did not. Chicago will play the winner of the Colorado-Minnesota series. Also, in the West, the series between Anaheim and Dallas has finished. Though Dallas gave a good fight, Anaheim was victorious. The Ducks seemed to have all the momentum in the series, however, Dallas held on tight and won two games. Both Dallas victories were well deserved of the Stars as they fought for every minute of puck possession. The series actually seemed to be headed into game seven as the Stars lead the Ducks 4-2 with just over two minutes in the third period. Majestically, the Ducks rallied to tie up the game 4-4 in just a matter of two minutes and sent the game into overtime. Ducks forward Devante Smith-Pelly was to thank for the game-tying goal with just 24.2 seconds remaining in the third. With just 2:47 expired in OT, Ducks forward Nick Bonino ripped the biscuit past the tender to finish the series. The Anaheim Ducks will draw the winner of the San Jose-Los Angeles series, which may or may not have been determined on Monday night, April 28. The two series left in the West could have already been completed or will be completed by Wednesday, April 30. The Colorado-Minnesota series is currently at 3-2 Colorado (as of 4/28/2014 9:30pm). I believe the Avs will finish off the Wild either on April 28 or on April 30 (tonight). I apologize for the delay in news as hockey does not stop while these issues are being written/printed.

In California tensions have raised as the San Jose Sharks blew a 3-0 lead against Los Angeles. The Sharks had a chance to sweep the Kings, however the Kings fought back to make the series 3-2 (as of 4/28/2014 9:30pm). The series can already be over by the time this reaches you, however, I hope that it is sent into game seven for entertainment purposes, of course.

Regardless, my predictions still stand. I believe Chicago will draw Colorado in the Conference Semifinals, and Anaheim will draw Los Angeles.

eastern ConferenCe

In the East, all but one series has been completed over the last few days. None of these series has disappointed. The Boston Bruins, as predicted I might add, have beaten the Detroit Red Wings in just five games. Though captain Henrik Zetterberg made his return to the Wings’ lineup, the Wings could do little against the Bruins defensively sound infrastructure. The Bruins, with great goaltending and veteran defense, rooted the Wings in an exciting and physical series. The Bruins will square off against playoff and regular-season rival, Montreal…which brings me to my next point. The Montreal-Tampa Bay series ended abruptly as the Habs swept the Lightening in the first round. This was unexpected of me as I thought the Lightening would best the Habs due to a great regular-season and a surging offensive effort led by Steven Stamkos. However, that was not the case. Montreal’s players showed up ready to play against the Lightening and swept them all

the way to the golf course. The Boston-Montreal will be an absolutely physical and entertaining series to watch…ah I cannot wait for it! Another surprising series came of the Pittsburgh-Columbus series. This matchup was favored to be an easy sweep against the weaker Columbus Blue Jackets. However, the hockey gods had other plans. Columbus, with some persistent players and a wee bit o’ luck, held on for a fighting chance against the Pens. The Blue Jackets managed to win two games before the Pens ousted them in the series, 4-2. The Pittsburgh Penguins will face off against the winner of the New York-Philadelphia series, which may or not have been determined when reading this paper. The New York Rangers and Philly Flyers have been duking it out through this series as expected.

Just when the Rangers seem to have the upper hand in the series, Philly comes back and gains the much-needed momentum. I hope this game goes into game seven, as these two teams really know how to put on a great show, but I still believe the Rangers will square off against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Conference Finals.

Golf Teams Launch High and Land SoftMen Win CCAC; Thompson Wins 2nd Ind. Title

Tim CarrollSenior Sports Editor

Both Saint Xavier golf teams had eventful CCAC championship events last week. The men took a team victory and a women’s team member earned the individual title.

Men’s Team Victory The Saint Xavier University men’s golf team earned their third team victory of the season following the April 21 and 22 tournament. But this was by far the crowning achievement of the season. After all, it was the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) championship. It was their second-straight win after having captured the Bethel Pilot Invitational in South Bend, Ind., on April 11 and 12. The Cougars, in just their second year as a team, beat out the other 11 teams in the field at George W. Dunne National in Oak Forest. Dunne is probably the toughest course they played all year: a par-72 track with water on 11 holes that played to 7,262 yards. Saint Xavier took the CCAC crown by seven strokes and had all four golfers in the top 10. Junior Kyle Bahnick almost came away with the individual title in addition to the team victory. His first-round 76 and second-round 75 (+7 for the tournament) had him tied for the lead after regulation. Bahnick met Holy Cross College’s Matthew Code for a playoff hole, which Code won to take the individual title. More important, however, was the

team win, which the Cougars earned with consistency and depth on the roster. Senior James Kerr finished in a tie for third place after improving on his first day score of 79 with a second-round 74 (+9). Seniors Kirby Brown and Brendan Ryan rounded out the team score in a tie for seventh and ninth place, respectively. Brown shot 78-79 (+13) and Ryan finished in 78-80 (+14) to demonstrate the men’s golf team’s prowess from top to bottom.

Thompson Takes Individual Title First-year golfer Taylor Thompson shot an 81 on the first day of the CCAC championship and followed it up with a 79 to win the individual title by two strokes over Olivet Nazarene University’s Ashley Miller. It was Thompson’s second first-place

finish this season. The first came in the Saint Francis University (Ill.) Fall Invite on Oct. 4 and 5. It was also her fifth-straight top-10 finish of the season. G l e n e a g l e s Country Club in Lemont held the championship event. The c o u r s e m e a s u r e d 6,045 yards and played to a par of 72. T h e women’s team

as a whole struggled. They finished in fifth place out of the five teams in the field. First-year Courtney Dudgeon finished tied for 14th place with consecutive 91s. Fellow first-year Katie Reno found success in the first round with an 89 but could not keep it going in the second round, shooting a 102. Ashley Anderson, another first year, improved between the first and second days. She shot a 130 before her second-round 122. The golfing future for Saint Xavier looks bright, with the second-year men’s team picking up three team victories in 2013-2014 and the first-year women’s team earning two individual titles during the season. The men’s team’s season continues

with their bid for an NAIA national championship in Daytona Beach, Fla., on May 13.

Thompson earned her second individual win in the CCAC Championship. SXU Athletics

Records Were Meant to be BrokenDamone Griffin

Sports Editor

As odd as I can be on a daily basis I still understand how to approach a situation logically. In softball it is simple logic if a team cannot score runs then they will not beat their opponent. I call this thought logic the SXU’s Softball team would simply call it a winning strategy and oh how they execute it to near perfection. Saint Xavier (42-5-1, 17-2-1) broke two records last week on Tuesday, April 22 ,during their two wins in a double-header against Judson University. The Cougars beat Judson University 3-1 to push their winning streak to a program best 20 games and in the process broke an NAIA record for consecutive innings played without allowing a run. The previous record was held by California Baptist at 57.1 innings and SXU only needed 3.1 innings of shutout work to break the record. SXU got that and more from their dynamic pitching and defense as SXU ran their ridiculous scoreless streak to 60.2 innings before Judson scored on a RBI single in the top of fourth to take a 1-0 lead. Even though the streak was broken SXU still rallied in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead. Junior centerfielder Shannon Lauret hit an RBI single to tie the game at one and then first-year shortstop Franchesca

Graffeo gave the Cougars the lead for good with another RBI single. Junior catcher Megan James finished off the scoring with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1 which would prove to be the final score. Senior pitcher Megan Nonnemacher was excellent on the mound, going all seven innings with one earned run, five hits, and six strikeouts. In the second game the Cougars extended their winning streak to 21 with a 6-1 victory to finish off the sweep. Sophomore Nicole Nonnemacher pitched another gem, going all seven innings by allowing one run, four hits, and striking out 16 batters. The game was highlighted by an RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth by N. Nonnemacher and sacrifice bunt laid down by junior first basemen Amanda Hainlen. After the sweep of Judson No. 9 SXU then went on to face No. 4 Olivet Nazarene University in a huge CCAC double-header. It took 21 games and top-5 opponent but SXU was finally defeated by a score of 5-2 in game one. It was their first loss since a 4-3 defeat at the hands of Calumet College of St. Joseph. The Tigers’ win was highlighted by a three-run home run by sophomore leftfielder Lindsey Krippel in the bottom of the second inning, which gave the Tigers a four run lead. SXU had a runner on in the top of seventh after cutting the deficit to three but the next three batters came up short as

Olive took the win. M. Nonnemacher had a tough outing striking out nine but gave up seven hits and five earned runs on the afternoon. The next was a dogfight that ended in a 2-2 tie after eight innings because of darkness. Hainlen blasted a two-run home run in the top of the fourth to give the Cougars a 2-0 advantage. Krippel would counter in the bottom of the sixth with another big homer for the Tigers that made it 2-2. As it went into extras, darkness would encase the field and the game had to be called, ending Olivet’s ridiculous 43 game winning streak. N. Nonnemacher also gave up seven hits but yielded only two runs and striking 10 in eight innings of work. The Cougars continued to their journey on the road playing Purdue University-Calumet. SXU had to settle for a split in this series after they won game one 4-2 but lost game two 0-1. In the first game M. Nonnemacher earned her 81st career win as a pitcher for SXU, breaking the program record. She finished with seven strikeouts and a walk with two earned runs in seven innings of action. Game two saw the Peregrines shutout the Cougars 1-0 with the only run being scored off of a solo home run by PUC. N. Nonnemacher absorbed the loss

even though she pitched well, fanning 13 and allowing only two walks. The team finished out their regular season with sweeps of Siena Heights University and Concordia University. N. Nonnemacher (18-3) ended the season with her 16th shutout a 4-0 win against Concordia University. The team will start play in the CCAC Tournament Thursday May 1 at SXU’s Softball Field, so come out and support the Cougars.

Cougar Baseball Second in North DivisionSXU’s 14-11 CCAC Record One Gam Better than RMUTim CarrollSenior Sports Editor

As of Monday, the Saint Xavier University Cougar baseball team had a record of 20-26 overall and 14-11 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC). The Cougars dropped both games of a doubleheader at Olivet Nazarene University before winning three of their last four. The three wins came via a victory in their game against Purdue University Calumet and two wins in a three-game weekend series against Robert Morris University.

Onward to Victory Last Thursday’s game against Purdue Calumet, which was played at Ferrell Field but was technically a Purdue Calumet home game, ended in a 5-1 Cougar win. The senior leaders of the Cougar squad again had solid performances against the Peregrines. Designated hitter Chris Klein went

3-for-5 with two RBIs hitting in the leadoff spot, while first baseman Thomas Keating, batting cleanup, added two more RBIs in his 2-for-5 showing. Each also scored a run of his own. Keating got the scoring started with a double down the left field line in the third inning that scored sophomore shortstop Alec Barnhart, who scored two runs. First-year right fielder Bryan Polak drove in the other run that inning, which gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead. Klein added a run in the top of the fourth on a solo home run to left field. It was Klein’s second of the year, moving him into fourth place on the team behind Barnhart (four) and Polak and Keating (three). Klein then singled home a run in the sixth before Keating ended the scoring with an RBI single in the eighth. Klein pitched the first game of the doubleheader at Robert Morris on Saturday and earned his fourth win of the season. He went all seven innings, giving up two runs

on six hits while striking out nine. He also showed up at the plate. He was 3-for-4 with an RBI on a fourth-inning double. Keating again had a masterful performance at the dish. He was a perfect 4-for-4 with a run scored. Barnhart and senior left fielder Brad Myjak found success against RMU pitching as well. Barhnart was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Myjak

was 1-for-3, but he added two RBI on a first-inning single and drove in another run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. After dropping the second game of the doubleheader, the Cougars hosted the Eagles on Sunday and won the game 1-0. Senior pitcher Scott Vachon won the pitcher’s duel with a complete-game shutout, spreading out the seven hits he gave up while striking out six batters. The Cougars’ lone run came on a double. As first-year catcher Ryan Pellack took second base, Polak swiped home. The manufactured run proved enough for Vachon’s outing.

Cougars Remain in Second Despite the doubleheader sweep at the hands of Olivet Nazrene and one loss to Robert Morris, Saint Xavier still holds second place in the north division of the CCAC. Robert Morris, which holds a better

overall record at 28-18, is hot on the heels of Saint Xavier. They are just one game back in the division, and neither team has a chance to catch first-ranked Judson University, which holds a six-game lead on Saint Xavier. The Cougars had a chance in each of their games against Olivet. The Tigers clipped the Cougars by one run in each contest, winning 4-3 and 5-4. The game Saint Xavier lost to Robert Morris was not nearly as close. The Eagles ran away with game two of the doubleheader by a final score of 10-0 (in seven innings). Cougar pitching combined to surrender 16 hits and four walks to the Eagles in just 6 2/3 innings of work.
