APRIL 28, 2019 Second Sunday of Easter

And Then There Was One Welcome to our new bulletin, which actually premiered last weekend on

Easter Sunday. It covers the news and schedules for our Neighbors North Catholic Community while including var ious impor tant items from our four individual parishes. It is one of our main means of communication, along with the new website neighborsnor th.org and Flocknote. If you are not yet on the Flocknote email system you can sign up by contacting either Julie at [email protected] or Michelle at [email protected].

Whether you choose to read it online or hard copy, this weekly bulletin will give you a view of the week ahead and even beyond. It is configured to be user friendly so you can find the information you need in the same place every week: general grouping info first, then Mass schedules and staff contacts, then individual parish events and ministries. We’ve also added a page for outside announcements regarding diocesan news, events in other parishes, and community news and events. Thanks to Kelly Ryan, our bulletin editor, for putting this massive project together every week.

In addition, there are three pages of advertisements that pay for these weekly bulletins, so peruse them carefully and support our generous benefactors. We pay nothing for this opportunity to keep you informed and we even receive a yearly rebate.

Meanwhile, the new website for our grouping is up and running although it is still being tweaked to get it where we want it. Thanks to Deacon Bill Palamara for overseeing the construction of our website and keeping it running.

As you see, we are working hard to keep you informed. If you have further questions, you can call or email.

Administrator’s Perspective

In Other News: It has been customary to publish here the high school honor roll students for each quar ter. However, because we have so many br illiant students in the parishes of our grouping, we no longer have enough room here. This is indeed a blessing, but because of the lengthy list of names we’ve had to move the honor roll to another venue. So from now on, you’ll find the high school honor roll on Flocknote….stay tuned for more news….

Second Sunday of Easter (Divine Mercy) This feast of Divine Mercy reminds us of many parables taught by Jesus emphasizing God’s mercy. We remember the three beautiful parables of Luke 15. God is like a shepherd who leaves 99 sheep to go in search of the one lost sheep. God is like a woman who searches the entire house to find the coin she lost. God is like a father who comes out of the house to welcome back his prodigal son, and who comes out of the house a second time to entice the elder son to come in and join in the party. Today God has created yet another opportunity for us to receive his infinite mercy. He is risen! Let the Church say, “Alleluia!”

Caritas Concert Series Next Sunday We will have the final installment of our concert series next Sunday, May 5, at 3 PM in St. Teresa of Avila Church. The Slippery Rock University Wind Ensemble will be presenting an exciting afternoon of music for concert band including works by Percy Grainger, Steven Bryant, Eric Coates, Franz von Suppé, and more! Join us as we share the gift of music from the talented students at Slippery Rock University. Freewill donations to support our Neighbors North Music Ministries and the SRU Wind Ensemble. All ages welcome!

Gather Hymnal Update Thanks to all who have been participating in dedicating and memorializing new Gather hymnals for each of our four churches. We will soon begin publishing listings of donors on a weekly basis. Bookplates will also begin to appear inside the hymnals throughout the month of May. There’s still time to participate! Simply fill out a form and return it to any of our four churches. Thank you very much for supporting Neighbors North Music Ministries!

Thank You, Tommy Hoffman and David Volcheck I’m sorry to say that we’ve come to the end of an era. This is the last weekend that Mr. Tommy Hoffman and Mr. David Volcheck will be with us. Tommy was the former music director for St. Sebastian, and David was the former music director for Incarnation of the Lord. Both Tommy and David agreed to stay on as music assistants to help us throughout the transition process over the past six months for which I am extremely grateful. There is absolutely no way we could have pulled off merging the music ministry programs from four different parishes without them.

Prior to On Mission and the formation of our grouping, they each served their own parishes with total love and devotion for many, many years. Anyone who has done this job will tell you that it takes up all of your spare time. Days can run anywhere from eight to thirteen hours on the job. Tommy and David selflessly gave us all of their time through their faithful service in worship and music ministry. It is quite evident that they love their parishes and all of you. They wouldn’t have done this job if they didn’t. If you have the opportunity this weekend, please make the time to offer them your personal thanks and wish them well. We are blessed because they shared their blessings with us.

If you would like show your appreciation to Tommy or David by offering them a card or gift, simply bring it to any of the rectory offices over the next few weeks with their name on it and we will certainly make sure they receive it.

Parish Social Ministry

Anointing of the Sick The Annual Mass for Anointing of the Sick will be celebrated on Saturday, May 18 at 1:00 at St. Sebastian Church. Anyone wishing to be anointed is welcome to attend and receive the sacrament. Light refreshments will be served in the Narthex following Mass. Reservations are required.

Please R.S.V.P. by Tuesday, May 14th to: Anne Kaufman at 412-364-6442; Peg Kirchner at 412-508-9457; or Mary Boglitz at 412-366-3532.

Communion Visits: Many of our parish shut-ins receive Holy Communion and visits from parishioners, but in some cases we do not know who receives visits and/or Communion, or who may want Communion or a visit. We need your help! Please call Sister Alice Dunlop, part-time social minister, with names of people who would like a visit, and efforts will be made to contact them. We know many people reach out to others in need, but we often do not know who they are. Sister Alice is contacting various parish groups/staff to update our list of shut-ins. She may be reached at 412-931-4624, ext 212. More information to follow!

Clothing Drive at St. Athanasius for SVDP Saint Vincent de Paul will have a Bundle Up clothing drive to replenish the St. Vincent de Paul thrift stores. The drive will be on Saturday, May 18 from 9am until Noon. A truck will be in the St. Athanasius parking lot for your contributions of gently worn clothing for all ages. Please bring your donations of clothing, shoes, purses, etc. in bags or boxes during this time only. People will be there to help collect your donations. This is a good time to clean out your closets while changing to summer! Also, you will be performing one of the Corporal Works of Mercy (to clothe the naked). Thank you for your support and please remember to pray for the less fortunate.

Rachel’s Vineyard Retreat Weekend: The next retreat weekend is on May 17-19 at The Ark and the Dove Center on Babcock Blvd in Gibsonia. This retreat is open to any woman or man who is struggling with the emotional and spiritual pain of abortion. The weekend provides an opportunity to enter the grieving process and identify all the ways abortion may have affected you. Pain and suffering are then transformed through a spiritual process using rituals, meditations, a memorial service and Mass of Resurrection. Retreat facilitators include a licensed therapist, former participants, and a priest who serves as the spiritual director. The retreat is non-judgmental and confidential. For more information, contact Toni Jester, Retreat Facilitator at 412-352-5348 or [email protected].

Substance Addiction Ministry “SAM”: Tuesday May 7th at 7:00pm in the St Sebastian

If you care about someone who suffers from an addiction or the many who have no one to pray for them please join the Pgh. Diocese North Hills SAM team at St Sebastian chapel, on the first Tuesday of the month to pray the rosary for recovery at 7:00pm in the chapel, all are welcome. Help Our Lady fight the crisis!

Faith Formation CATECHESIS OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD

How blessed we have been this 2018-19 Religious Education year that Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Level I (ages 3-6) has begun at St. Teresa of Avila Parish. As we continue to listen and be led by the Spirit we know that God is calling more individuals to the joy of serving as a Catechesis of the Good Shepherd catechist or aide; please prayerfully consider if God is

calling you… Please pray about this invitation: Beginning this summer St. Germaine Parish, Bethel Park will host a summer Level I (ages 3-6) Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) course for all interested adults. CGS is a faith formation experience for children ages 3-12 years old. It is based on the belief that young children can and do experience God in a very real way. Founded on the educational principles of Maria Montessori, CGS is rooted in scripture and liturgy. Children enter into a love relationship with Jesus, the Good Shepherd, through Gospel proclamation, prayer, song, silence and liturgical celebrations. The adult catechist seeks to “Let the children come to Jesus,” knowing that as adults we must “turn and become like children.” In this Level I course, participants will explore the guiding principles and methodology of CGS, discover the religious nature and most vital needs of the three to six year old, meditate on scripture, learn how to observe and learn from children and to enjoy the presence of God. The course will take place in a retreat environment. Additional information about CGS can be found on the national website: https://www.cgsusa.org. Contact Kate at [email protected] for more details and CGS scholarship opportunities. INTERIOR CASTLE COFFEE HOUSE & SPIRITUAL LIBRARY The Interior Castle Coffee House & Spiritual Library will be open on Sunday, May 5 at 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. All are invited! Contact Kate at 412.367.9001 x548 or Susan x547 for additional information. FAMILY FAITH FORMATION MASSES Family Faith Formation Masses will be held on Tuesday, April 30 at 5 p.m. and Wednesday, May 1 at 6 p.m. at St. Teresa of Avila. All families are to attend; we look forward to seeing you there. LITURGY OF THE WORD WITH CHILDREN Liturgy of the Word with Children (CLW) is celebrated at the 11 a.m. Mass at St. Teresa of Avila. Please prayerfully consider if the good Lord is calling you to serve on our CLW team as a catechist or assistant in this ministry. Please contact Kate at x548 for further details. VACATION BIBLE CAMP Save the date for our joint Vacation Bible Camp with St. Athanasius at St. Athanasius site on June 24-June 28: 9 a.m. to Noon. View our Neighbors North Catholic Community website for more details about registration.

Second Sunday of Easter ~ Receive the Holy Spirit.

Breaking Open the Word: John 20:19-31 Listen to the Word: As you hear this reading, what words or phrases str ike you? What in this reading touches your heart? What lingers in your memory? Look into Your Life: Children: Jesus appeared to the disciples even though they were afraid and locked in the closed room. How can you show Jesus to another person this week by how you act? Youth: Thomas didn’t believe because he hadn’t seen Jesus with his own eyes. How hard is it for you to believe in God without being able to see God? How do you see God in the words and actions of others?

Adults: Jesus said: "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe." Give one example of how you will show your belief in Jesus this week - how you are being sent forth. This is the final installment of Thom S. Rainer’s book, Autopsy of a Deceased Church. In his 12th Chapter Rainer states four responses to a Church that has symptoms of sickness: “1) Pray that God will open eyes of

the leader and members for opportunities to reach into the local community, 2) Take an honest audit of how church members spend their time being involved, 3) Take an audit of how the church spends its money and finally, 4) Make specific plans to minister and to evangelize your community.”

ADC pages 88-89

Prayerful Commitment: “Lord, let me see my church with honesty and open eyes Help me to grasp where we have gotten out of balance with inward and outward ministries. Even more, God use me to be a catalyst and instrument for the

changes that need to be made.” ADC page 90

The Second Sunday of Easter April 28, 2019

THE GOSPEL: Following Jesus’ crucifixion the disciples lost hope due to their uncertainty about Jesus’ resurrection. They were filled with fear, and locked them-selves in a room. Without entering through the door, Jesus appeared before them with a greeting of peace and a mission to spread the Good News. The disciple, Thomas, was not in the room. When he learned of Jesus’ visit, he would not believe it. But about a week later, Jesus appeared in a similar way and Thomas was with the others. Jesus invited Thomas to touch the wounds in his hands and side. Thomas knew immediately that it was Jesus and believed in him.

THE DOMESTIC CHURCH: Parents are often the source of hope and encouragement for their children. When a child falls repeatedly while learning to walk or ride a bike, it is a parent who coaxes, encourages, and praises the child. Parents provide hope and comfort when a child falls short of a goal whether in academics, relationships, sports, or the arts. Parents can relate to the role of Jesus with his disciples. They were fright-ened and discouraged but they found hope and relief with the peace and presence of Jesus.

The first and most important place for passing on the faith is the home, through the quiet daily example of parents who love our Lord and trust in his word.” Pope Francis

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!

Incarnation Parish needs church office volunteers. Volunteers would answer the phone and door, takes messages, receive and sort mail, and perform occasional light clerical duties such as stuffing envelopes. A positive attitude and a warm smile together with good communication skills are key. Volunteers are needed Tuesdays and Fridays between 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM. You will be asked to agree to a regular “shift,” e.g., Tuesday from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Attire is casual, but suitable to a church environment. You may bring a book, magazine, knitting for when you’re not busy. Interested? Please call the parish at (412)931-2911 and leave your name, phone number, and the best time to call. THANK YOU!

GREETING CARDS We thank all of you who donated any extra or unused birthday cards we send to our parishioners. We have plenty of those at the moment but could still use some “Thinking of You” cards.

Saint Sebastian

We commend the following soul to your prayers: Elizabeth Barngrover died on April 13 and was buried from our parish on April 25. She is the mother of Darlene Barngrover of our parish.

Parish Share Program – Reminder Parish Share supports the many efforts of the Diocese, which in turn directly and indirectly benefits the parishes – Vocations, Leadership, Training and Evangelization, Catholic Education, as well as administrative programs, systems and support. Each parish in our grouping received an assessment to finance the operation of the Diocese. Any funds raised in excess of our assessment stays in the parish, to be used for improvements, or for parish operations. Thank you for your participation.

Holy Cross Academy

This has been an exciting year for the PTG at Holy Cross. As the second year of our school, we have an entire new executive board for PTG: President – Sarah Marker, Vice President – Gretchen Cetti, Treasurer-Kristen Gualteri, Secretary – Kristy Frisco. It has been a packed year with

activities, fundraisers, and events to enhance our students’ school year. It started in August with an ice cream social at the supplies drop off before the start of the school year. In September, PTG scheduled the Meet the Teacher night for grades 1-4, 5-8. October was our first fundraising event with a hoagie sale with a great turnout. At Christmas, PTG ran the Santa Shop for the students to purchase gifts for their family, along with anyone who attended the Breakfast with Santa event. After the new year, there were many planned events for Catholic Schools week, however the weather had other plans and we missed much of the week due to cold and snow. Most of those events and assemblies were rescheduled for later in February. In March, we had our first afternoon meeting with a lot of interest and planning for the future. With the end of the year approaching, there are still some fun events and assemblies coming up along with field trips (PTG provides a portion of the funding for the bussing). PTG is a versatile organization with a variety of activities and events in the school year that hopefully make Holy Cross Academy a more fun and welcoming experience for the students and staff. We meet every second Tuesday at 6:45 in the cafeteria. Our meetings are open to

parents, grandparents and parishioners. We hope to see more of you at our meetings.

PARENT - TEACHER GUILD (PTG)

After a unit on forces and motion in science, the fifth grade students worked in groups on a STEM activity to design the fastest balloon rocket. To create their rocket, they were given balloons of various sizes and shapes along with different types of materials to create a track for the rocket to follow. There were many unique designs and the students thoroughly enjoyed testing and redesigning their rockets. The fastest rocket design went 355 cm/s. During the chapter on Native Americans in social studies, the students worked in groups to create a model of an item that could be part of a museum display of Native American artifacts. The artifacts they made were based on their assigned tribe’s location and available resources. Totem poles, pottery, longhouses, and tomahawks were a few of the artifacts made.

The collections for the Fifth Grade Slipper Drive for Children’s Hospital just finished on April 15. We extend millions of thanks to all who donated to this worthy cause. There will be many happy faces on Holy Thursday as we “dress” children’s feet as Jesus washed the disciples’ feet. The students wrapped the slippers with enthusiasm and love sending the following message with each pair. From the bottom of our hearts to the

bottom of your feet: We hope you are feeling better! From your friends in the 5th Grade class at Holy Cross Academy. - Mrs. Brungo, Mrs. Mooney & Mrs. Slifkin
