Second Sunday of Easter or Sunday of Divine Mercy April 19, 2020

Third Sunday of Easter

April 26, 2020

First Reading: Acts 2:14, 22-33

After the Holy Spirit descends upon the apostles, Peter preach-

es with great enthusiasm to both Jews and Christians. He re-

calls for them in vivid terms the miracles and wonders that Je-

sus performed.

1 Peter 1:17-21

Peter makes reference to the Passover, when the Jews es-

caped from Egypt because the blood of the paschal lamb was

shed. Now they are being saved from sin by the blood of Christ,

the Lamb of the New Testament.

Gospel: Luke 24:13-35

Jesus reveals Himself to two disciples on the way to Emmaus.

After explaining to them the passages in Scripture which re-

ferred to Him, Christ “took bread, broke it, and distributed it to

them.” Then they recognized Christ and their “hearts burned

within them.”

The Flowers on the Altar the week of April 26th are for the inten-

tion of Thomas Patrick Curran given by Martha Bowles.

The Candles on the Altar the week of April 26th are for the inten-

tion of Thomas Patrick Curran given by Martha Bowles..

Tenth Annual Agnes Lunetta Scholarship Award Essay The Agnes Lunetta Scholarship was established by Larry Lunetta, Patricia Van Arsdalen, and Susan Fattel in memory of their mother, Agnes Lunetta. This $1,000 scholarship is awarded every year to a 7th grade student at St. Patrick School in honor of Agnes Lunetta who was a highly involved parishioner at the church, and an individual of great faith and integrity. The award is based on a student’s essay about a personal faith journey at St. Patrick School. This year’s winner is Samantha Losacco. The award was presented to Samantha at a school liturgy on January 17, in honor of St. Agnes. Her essay is as follows:

“Christ died for us so that we may have eternal life in heaven. He is someone who is always there for me and helps me when times are rough. I know I can always turn to Christ when I am struggling or need hope. He makes me feel loved and safe. Although I know Christ will always be there for me, I felt a lack of Him in my heart three years ago on October 24, when I lost my grandmother to brain cancer.

When she passed away, I felt empty. It hurt and I was confused why God would take away such an important part of my life. I remem-ber the times I spent with my grandma and I never realized the pain I would feel when she was gone. I felt alone when she wasn’t’ there to comfort me. It almost seemed that Christ was no longer with me. Of course it was difficult to overcome the passing of my grandmother, but I felt Jesus through the people around me. Whenever I was upset or needed to talk to someone, everyone was will-ing to listen and be there for me.

To be a follower of Christ, you must try your best everyday to be like Him and live up to His teachings. This means you should always be helpful and sympathetic towards others. I feel everyone is worthy to be a follower of Christ because everyone was made to be like Him and everyone is capable of doing good in the world. Christ asks that we believe in Him no matter what. Even if you are going through challenging times in your life, know that He will always be there to guide you. Christ is not present in our lives to provide us with all the answers to our problems, and He won’t make every situation you face easier, but He will help you through the challenges you face because He knows how strong you are.

I believe Mary portrays a prime example of a true follower of Christ. She was a great listener and she never sinned. She tried her best everyday to be there for others and she always said yes to God. When she was asked to be the mother of Jesus, she agreed. This is like Christ because He always accepted that God knew what was best for Him.

Christ is a huge part of my life. Although at first I felt like He was not with me when my grandma died, He helped me get through it. Of course I still miss my grandma, even today, but Christ has helped me realize that my grandma will always be with me, even if it is not physically. Christ has taught me that although it is hard to lose something that means everything to you, He will help you through it and it will always get better.”

As the Easter Season calls for courage to articulate our faith in the Risen Christ, there are countless times that we struggle to believe; perhaps many wonder about the presence of God during this coronavirus crisis as some might be asking the reason that God is not doing anything about it. However God is working through many people during this tragedy as his love is shown in countless ways. This weekend at liturgy the apostle Thomas hears those powerful words proclaimed in John’s Gospel (John 20:29), “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” Let us be people who take to heart the reality of the Risen Christ who will carry us through these difficult days.

In Christ’s Love, Fr. Bob

The Appalachia Help Weeks are a part of the Justice &

Service component to St. Patrick Youth Ministry. The

whole process fosters the faith development of all who

participate and provides an opportunity for our communi-

ty to be the Body of Christ for others. We support the

area of Preston County physically, emotionally, spiritual-

ly and financially allowing the families who are served to

know that Catholics are people of Christ who care about

others and want to help those in need. Our Appalachia

Help Week teams help (to the best of our ability) make

the assigned homes designated for repair as safe and as

livable as possible. High school sophomores and older

including adults (no maximum age!) are invited to join

us. Visit our website for more information.

Mass will be live streamed

WQXR “Seize the Day” segment On Holy Thursday the following was heard on WQXR, station 105.9FM, New York’s Classical Music Radio Station. “A loud shout-out to Maggie Hanson, music director of St. Patrick Church, in Chatham, NJ. In the absence of in-person choral singing for the Holy Week Services, she had choir members record their parts at home and send them by e-mail, so she can mix them using audio software and play the finished product for the on-line services. It’s kept everyone in the choir close to one another and has kept our spirits up. She’s the best!

Easter Sunday Winner The winner for following Easter liturgy via livestream from the furthest distance from the parish goes to Kate Oliver who watched the 9:00 a.m. liturgy all the way from Ibiza, Spain. Congratulations goes out to Kate. The runner up was Jack and Margot Hanson who tuned in from Bristol, Maine. Thanks to all who participated in the contest.
