APRIL 2017Kalamazoo’s Community Theatre
t’s 1933, and every aspiring actress in Hollywood wants the lead role in the upcoming antebellum
epic “The Belle of New Orleans.” Long suffering African-American maid Vera Stark is enlisted to help wine anddine some Hollywood bigshots to make sure her boss, fading starlet Gloria Mitchell, wins the lead role.Meanwhile Vera and two of her friends are determined towin their own roles in the epic, even though Vera onceswore she would never put on a head rag to play a slave, even one of those rare roles for “a slave with lines!”
Hilarious and poignant, the play by Lynn Nottagepaints a revealing picture of the early days in Hollywoodthat shaped Vera as a mysterious screen queen and inanother time and place, who she might have been.
Fast forward to the 1970’s in the second act, whereboth actresses meet again on a talk show to discuss thedecisions they made throughout their careers, and pickat the scars they inflicted on each other forty years prior. The decisions they made years earlier affected not onlytheir careers, but also their fame, their futures and thestory behind the cameras no one ever really knew.
Drawing upon the screwball films of the 1930’s, Bythe Way, Meet Vera Stark is a funny and irreverent lookat racial stereotypes in Hollywood, but one begins towonder, what progress has been made? MarissaHarrington, who plays Vera Stark, believes this is a verycomplicated issue. “Show business in general has historically been very segregated and people of colorwere “allowed” to be represented. Unfortunately, in
these situations it was not our own people writing ourstories. Characters were written based on stereotypesand prejudices. So, this is what you saw represented.Mammies, drug dealers, maids, pimps, gangsters, youname it. Black people have not had the luxury of havingthe artistic flexibility of other races. Do I think thatprogress has been made? Absolutely. Do I think we havea long way to go? Of course. I will think that we’veachieved progress when more people of color are represented more frequently on screen and stage, withdiverse characters - not just the roles for black people.”
Director Emily Campbell Berezowsky faces a uniquechallenge tackling this piece where the action spans 70years. She feels that since storytelling in theatre isbound only by the audience’s imagination, if a clear orderof information is created, then the audience will travelback and forth in time with the production. She recentlysaid, “Age is a funny thing. People often say they stillfeel twenty-five inside, even though they might be threetimes that in physical age. I appreciate that in By theWay, Meet Vera Stark, we experience Vera, Gloria andLeroy in two distinct eras of their lives, but really thecharacters in these scenes operate, manipulate, and perform at 63 much as they did at 28. I don’t need to seethem ‘old’ to understand that they have lived complicatedlives over the course of the intermission! That is mydelight in this play.”
Don’t miss your chance to ‘meet Vera Stark’ in herquest for fame in this Kalamazoo area premiere.
