    Chamber Shout Outs

For the sixth consecutive year,MCMC nurses were among the exclusive group of Oregon healthcare professionals selected to receive the March of Dimes Nurse of the Year Award.

Each year the March of Dimes selects one outstanding nurse in each of 16 di erent categories of care. is year, two MCMC nurses were selected in two categories continuing the hospital’s streak of having at least one nurse earn the honor every year since the award program’s inception. is year’s honorees are: Lynn Allen, M.N., A.R.N.P., and Kathy Kahler, R.N., M.S.N., C.H.C.A.A member of the patient care team at MCMC’s Celilo Cancer Center, Allen was named Advance Practice Nurse of the Year. She says she loves visiting with her patients, discovering their personal stories, and supporting them through one of the most di cult times in their lives. Kahler, co-director of Visiting Health Services for MCMC, is Home Health Nurse of the Year. e daughter of a nurse, Kahler says it is an honor that patients allow visiting nurses into their home to care for them. “It’s always been her mission to care for patients where they are most comfortable — in the home,” says Visiting Health Services’ other co-director, Marcia Medler, noting that Kahler coincidentally won her honor during National Home Care & Hospice Month. “I am very humbled by this honor,” Kahler says. “It’s the team that I work with at Visiting Health Services, and my family, that make me who I am. I look forward to growing MCMC’s Visiting Health department in the Columbia Gorge region, where we cover seven counties in Washington and Oregon and serve over 200 patients every day. I want to thank the sta who cares for our patients, and also my mom for her inspiration and support.” Interim President/CEO Dianne Storby considers MCMC’s year-in, year-out representation on the nursing awards list to be “an extraordinary achievement for a hospital of our size. It is proof of the hard work and dedication to patient care I see every day from the healthcare professionals at MCMC. I am proud of our winners, past and present.” An awards breakfast for all honored nurses was held in November in Portland. e annual event brings together the Oregon and Southwest Washington healthcare community to recognize nursing excellence and achievements in education, innovation, leadership, research, and quality patient care.

    Fort Dalles Museum Update

Dear Chamber Members and Friends, Fort Dalles Museum/Anderson Homestead is open for their 111th season, sharing the history and the heritage of e Dalles and the eastern Columbia Gorge. e Museum, in the original Surgeon’s Quarters of Fort Dalles, opened on August 31st 1905. e Museum was started by a local women’s association called the Sorosis Club. Today each room of the Surgeon’s Quarters tells a story or stories of our local history. e newest exhibit is on the history of the Umatilla House Hotel, one of the grand hotels of the West. Other stories include: e Dalles as a River City, e Celilo Indians, e 1890s Parlor, e Horn Saloon, e Old West Room and the Lady’s Bedroom. Across the lawn of the Surgeon’s Quarters the vehicle building contains horse drawn vehicles and early automobiles that once drove or rode on the streets of e Dalles. Next to the vehicle building is an open air shed which houses more horse drawn vehicles. Another story unfolds in the original buildings of the Anderson Homestead. e homestead was originally owned by Louis Anderson and family who came to e Dalles in 1890 and purchased farmland on Pleasant Ridge. Today you can walk through the Swedish designed and built house, privy, granary and barn.Fort Dalles Museum/Anderson Homestead is open seven days a week from 10 am – 5 pm at 500 West 15th Street in e Dalles. (541) 296-4547 WE NEED VOLUNTEERS TO HELP US TELL THE STORIES OF FORT DALLES, ANDERSON HOMESTEAD, THE DALLES AND THE MID-COLUMBIA AREA. We need some active people to show people around the Museum and Homestead. For those of you who would rather not do a lot of walking we need people to act as a greeter and cashier. We will train you so that you will quickly become a storyteller sharing our area’s history.
