Letter from the Reverend Sharon Goble......
Church News April 2018
Along with millions of other viewers, I was to be found sobbing on the sofa when
Barbara Hereward of ‘Call the Midwife’ lay dying. At the time of writing, I don’t know
how the series is going to handle the funeral scenes and move us all on a bit. All seven
series have done a remarkable job at addressing so many significant themes, not only
about the usual remit of the midwife’s calling but also exploring social issues, justice,
spirituality, gender, race, community, prejudice, family dynamics, calling, faith and so
much more about what makes us human with such tenderness and sensitivity – and
always with the persistently empowering theme of bringing life into the world.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil….
As Barbara’s onscreen husband, Tom the curate’s voice cracks, her great friend and
colleague Phyllis takes up the words of Psalm 23, even though she’s never had any
truck with religion before. In this episode, those with faith are challenged in their
grief and those without faith find strange solace in the words of the Bible,
remembering the faith of their family roots, and in prayers and fellowship with
others sing the great hymn, Amazing Grace gospel-style.
Years ago, of course, midwives had a dual role in their communities. Not only did they
accompany mothers in labour in bringing babies into the world but they also laid out
the dead. Theirs was a calling to be in the liminal places, where each one of us will
have been at least once and where we will find ourselves again.
Giving birth and dying can be a daunting and messy business. The company of others
in such sensitive times is clearly a great source of strength to many, in our shared
reality of mortality. Christian faith and the story of Easter invites us to see both
birth and death as transitional – liminal stages in an ongoing gift of life in all its
fullness, through the love of God the life-giver, who knew us before we were born,
and loves us beyond our days here on earth. In faith, we have hope – and strength
for living now and into the future.
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! God has great mercy, and
because of his mercy he gave us a new life. This new life brings us a living hope
through Jesus Christ’s resurrection from death. Words from 1 Peter 1 v3 in The
Bible.
Something to celebrate! Happy Easter! Reverend Sharon Goble

It would be appreciated if you could try to avoid contacting John on Fridays and Sharon on Saturdays.

and would like Holy Communion taking to them, please let Sharon or John know.

PARISH COUNCIL NEWS
The March meeting took place on Wednesday 14th and was attended by all 6
Councillors, the Clerk and 3 members of the public. Two issues were raised via the
Public Forum and via correspondence: the lack of respect of some vehicle-using village
shoppers who have been crossing the planting border and footpath to exit the car
park and the worsening situation regarding the vegetation which obscures the Fosse
crossroads warning sign. It was noted that the former had been resolved the
previous day by the planting of shrub/hedgerow whips and the latter issue remained
in the lap of the county Highways Department. There were no planning applications
to debate but it was noted that the Nurseries (Hockley Lane) development application
had been rejected. Warwickshire County Council has notified of road closures
associated with the developments currently in progress: Rogers Lane 2-6 April and
Banbury Road later in April. It was noted with displeasure that Stratford District
Council has dissipated in other directions the £150K supposedly earmarked for
Ettington affordable housing and so recent initiatives are aborted although the Beau
Homes representative will continue to pursue possibilities.
Much of the meeting was devoted to “housekeeping” matters and Councillors agreed
the budget for 2018-19, voted unanimously to adopt the Stratford District Council’s
Code of Conduct, nominated the internal auditor for the 2017-18 accounts, and
approved various recurrent expenditures including the Clerk’s remuneration rate.
The implications of the government directive on General Data Protection Regulations
were discussed and the Clerk’s workplan for their implementation accepted.
Councillor Holtom kindly agreed to fulfil the role of Data Protection Monitor with the
Clerk being our Data Protection Officer.
A grant application for the resurrection of the Fulready Show was approved – its
revival is due to take place in September – and Councillors resolved, as the organising
body, to make radical changes to the format and timing of the Annual Parish Meeting
in an effort to improve interest and attendance (see separate notice).

Development Plan, and some local businesses. All you need to know about the new
FULREADY SHOW in September and the WORLD WAR I CENTENARY
commemoration and celebration in November.

Don’t be put off, this event is nothing to do with any of the local authorities but they
can contribute. It is a legal obligation for every community in the country to hold
such a meeting annually and although ours is arranged by the Parish Council, it doesn’t
have to be. However, any reasonable proposals that emerge must be considered by
the Parish Council at a future date.
The aim this year is to make this gathering as informal as possible and attract
a sizeable proportion of our population so please attend and feel free to bring
along the children – there will be provision made for them.
Like to come but have mobility difficulties? Don’t worry, just call 01789
295827 or 07836 218592 and transport will be arranged for you.

Recent & Forthcoming Church Events & Services Lent was welcomed in with Ettington hosting the Benefice ‘Ashing’ service on the evening
of 14th February. The Deanery Lent Service on 27th and the Ettington lent lunch the
following day saw the proceeds of the service collection going to Urban Hope and the
lunch donations to Christian Aid. In March our ‘All Age Worship’ celebrated Mothering
Sunday and thanks go to Charlie Coldicutt for the beautiful flower posies she provided.
Looking forward, Ettington will be hosting the Benefice ‘Bring and Share’ Maundy
Thursday meal at 6.30pm on 29th March and our Easter Day service on 1st April will be
a communion at 11.15am. The PCC will be holding its annual meeting of parishioners and
its annual parochial church meeting on Sunday 15th April in the church following the
Sunday service. The first meeting has one item of business, namely election of
churchwarden/s for the coming year and the second meeting is a review of the church’s
year to include reports on the electoral roll, safeguarding in the church, audited
accounts, clergy report and the election of officers. The church electoral roll is open
for those who wish to be added and forms are available from Jane Evans or from the
back of the church. During April and May, the church will be the venue for a Bishop’s
Certificate in Discipleship Module entitled “The Creed” and anyone wishing to sign up for
this course can do so on the Diocesan website or by contacting our Benefice clergy,
Sharon and John. Members of the Benefice will be attending a Data Protection course
run by the Diocese in April, in light of the widely publicised National changes governing
data protection. On 29th April there will be a Benefice service in Halford church to
include prayers for our newly elected PCCs and those who lead worship in our 6 churches.
The Church of England initiative “Thy Kingdom Come” will run from Ascension Day on 10th
May through to 20th May. This will be reflected in our Benefice services and events and
further information will be available in due course.
Church Fundraising: On Saturday 16th June, there will be another village ‘big
breakfast’ with the proceeds of this one going to the church. If anyone is able to assist
at this event then please contact Steve Lowe on 07900 084642. There is a change to our
previously advertised fete date and the church fete will now take place on Saturday 8th
September from 2-4pm.
VILLAGE ORGANISATIONS
Monday Club Our next meeting will be after Easter on Monday 9th April at 7.30pm in the small hall of
the Community Centre when we look forward to welcoming Melissa Coleman, Travel
Counsellor. Melissa plans to give us a glimpse of some wonderful holiday destinations in
the UK and overseas, as well as expert holiday advice and planning. Non-members are
welcome to the evening, just come along or contact Pat 740664, Jackie 740192 or Pat
740442. A £3 charge for visitors includes tea/coffee and biscuits.
Quaker Meeting House The Friends meet at 11am on Sundays at the Meeting House in Halford Road
Ettington Gardening Club The club's March meeting on the first day of Spring was cancelled by the Beast from
the East sweeping in to deliver a severe winter shock to both gardens and gardeners.
The speaker for that night, Sue McNally, will be back in the 2018/19 programme. The
club’s next evening meeting will be on Thursday 5th April when we welcome the return of
Adrian James for his talk ‘Bodenham through the seasons’. All meetings are held in the
small hall of the community centre and start at 7.30pm. New members are very welcome
and the annual subscription is a bargain at £12. If you want to try us first then come to
the meeting of your choice for a visitor’s fee of £3. For more information on any of the
club’s events then please call Matthew on 748041. You can follow us on Facebook. This
summer the gardening club is running two outings. Wednesday 6th June is a two-centre
day out. Our first stop will be at Bodenham Arboretum, Worcestershire’s Hidden
Garden, where you can meander through the beauty, peace and tranquility of an oasis of
plantations, pools and avenues beautifully landscaped including over 3,000 species of
trees and shrubs from all over the world. Each season bringing a beauty of its own. Early
afternoon we will depart Bodenham to drive the short distance to Dudmaston National
Trust, described as enchanted wooded parkland, sweeping gardens and a house with a
surprise. Dudmaston is something unexpected in the Shropshire countryside. It is a
lovely, interesting house with extensive grounds and there is plenty to see and do here,
including a large modern art collection and any number of walks around the gardens and
grounds. We will leave Ettington at 9am in Martin's luxury coach and arrive back around
7pm. Coach fare is £14 plus entry fees for Bodenham and Dudmaston if you are not
members. Lots to see, eat and shop at both. More details are available on the websites
www.bodenhamarboretum.co.uk/www.nationaltrust.org.uk/dudmaston. Our second outing
is an afternoon visit to Marlbrook Gardens on Thursday 5th July. There will be two
gardens open, possibly three. These are the NGS gardens of Dave Morgan and friends in
Bromsgrove. Dave has been a guest speaker at a couple of recent club meetings. Cost
will be £5 for the two gardens, possibly a bit more if three gardens are open. Tea and
cake will be £2.50. For more details please call Matthew on 748041.
