We are celebrating Spring and learning about in-

sects and butterflies. The children have enjoyed reading books such as: The Very Hungry Caterpil-lar and The Grouchy Ladybug. We made home-made playdough and created our own caterpillars and spiders. The

children found sticks and stones to add to

their creations. We discussed how each animal lives and the

different foods each

animal eats.

We hope everyone is enjoying the weather as much

as we are!

We would like to wish everyone a Safe and Happy

Summer Break!

Pete the Cat is wearing

his favorite shirt—the

one with the four totally

groovy buttons. But

when one falls off, does

Pete cry? Goodness, no!

He just keeps on singing

his song—after all, what

could be groovier than

three groovy buttons?

Count down with Pete in this rocking new story

from the creators of the bestselling Pete the Cat

books.

A dab of blue here, a splash of

red there, a goopy smear of

green . . . everywhere. To the

tune of "It Ain't Gonna Rain No

More," one creative

kid floods his world

with color, painting

first the walls, then

the ceiling, then HIM-

SELF! Before this

feisty artist is

through, he'll have

painted his head,

back, hands, legs,

feet, and . . . Oh no--

here comes Mama!

The students in Head Start Home Based are working diligently to prepare for their new adventure in the “big school”. The younger students are working on letter identification and letter sounds, while the kindergarten bound students are working on putting letter sounds together to make words.

I have been asking parents to play games while on car rides. These games are simple and have no rules. I am asking while at a stop sign to spell S-T-O-P and have your child repeat it to you. This activity is teach-ing the children letter recognition as well as safety when they see the sign. Alternatively, I am asking the parents to spell G-O and have their child repeat the spelling when it is time to go.

The final game is what I have dubbed Rhyme Time. This can be played anywhere at any time. For younger students, rhyming is a hard concept. This game makes rhyming fun and interactive. A parent comes up with a word and asks the child to rhyme. For younger children examples are given to help them along and learn the concept, while older children should have a firmer understanding. The words don’t have to be real; they just have to have to same ending sound.

Parents have been great sports about the activities. It has truly been wonderful to see how the student’s knowledge has grown because of parent interaction. I am truly blessed to work with such great parents and students. Thank You!!

West Ohio CAP held their Winter Family Engage-

ment at Apollo Career Center on February 23rd. Our

events are a chance for families to meet and interact

with other parents in the Head Start, Early Head

Start, Home Based and Childcare Partnership programs. There are always lots of fun and educational activi-

ties for the children, a free meal, giveaways and great door prizes that everyone has a chance to win!

At this event had our children were using their gross motor skills in the play area, working on their fine mo-

tor skills with our bottle game and scissor cutting area, playing with playdoh, and working on math skills

with a game they could take home. Families were allowed to take home playdoh and free scissors to work

on their skills home. The West Ohio Food Bank gave us a generous donation that enabled us to hand out free

bags of food to families in attendance.

Be sure to come to our next Family Engagement event in the Spring! There will be plenty more games,

activities, prizes, food and more – all for free!

The children in Central G have been learning all about the ocean and the animals that live in it. We have made several graphs with multiple ques-tions to figure out what the children already know and what they wanted to learn. The children built a submarine, created their own ‘Ocean Senso-

ry Bottles’, and made our own ocean animals using salt dough.

The children have also been working very hard to improve their

skills to prepare for kindergarten including writing their names, learning

their letters and numbers, self-help skills and retelling stories.

LeeAnn Shade and Diane Fowler of the Lima City Police Department’s Crime Prevention

Unit, have come to our classroom several times this year. When it comes to teaching safe-

ty lessons, they are an invaluable asset. Ms. Shade and Ms. Fowler have presented infor-

mation on topics including seatbelt safety, stranger danger and shopping safety. Next

month they will do a presentation on bicycle safety. When educating young children, it

truly does take everyone’s input, and we are very grateful for all their help. The children

look, listen and learn in many ways. Guest presenters are a big part of that learning.

We have been busy in Market II learning about nutrition. Mona Lisa Hoffman from OSU

Extension has been visiting us twice a month, teaching the children about the different

food groups, how the different food groups affect our bodies and exercising with the chil-

dren. We have also had LeAnn Shade from the Lima Police Department visit to teach the

children Stranger Danger and Seatbelt Safety. We have volunteers come in and read sto-

ries to the children on Thursday. The children really enjoy that. We have a field trip

coming up to Safety City where the children will learn stranger safety, bicycle safety and

fire safety.
