MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Welcome to SPRING! We had such a gorgeous winter I almost missed the arrival of spring. Wildflow-ers and cactus are bloom-ing everywhere. It took me several days to remember to carry my camera in the car again so that when opportunity strikes, I will

be ready. The color of the sky in the Tucson spring is unique and beautiful. Spring is full of color and color makes me want to grab a brush and paint. I sincerely hope that you feel the same way.

By now you should have received your ballot for the upcoming SAWG Election of Of-ficers. Please note that there aren’t the “voting buttons” I mentioned at the March general meeting, but we are offering several ways for you to cast your ballot: reply via email to Nancy Huber ([email protected]); bring your ballot to the April 11th meeting to be held at the Gallery and deposit it in the ballot box; or print a copy of your marked ballot and send it either to the Gallery or to Nancy at 4376 N Atfield Place, Tucson, 85719-1175.

We had hoped to have an updated version of the SAWG By-Laws ready for your consider-ation and approval this month, but the Board has not yet completed their careful review of the work of the By-Laws Committee. The work is too important to rush through and so the discussion has been temporarily tabled. By-Laws are the governing documents for the guild and do not reflect policy or procedures. Webster’s definition of By-Laws is as follows: By-Laws are rules adopted by an organization chiefly for the government of its members and the regulation of its affairs. There will be an an-nouncement and plenty of lead time when the By-Laws are ready for review and approval by the membership.

The reception for the Fiesta Sonora Show was well attended with a number of very hap-py award winners. If you have not yet treated yourself to the Fiesta Sonora show experience, do so before the last day, Sunday, April 3rd.

Our last show for this season is the ever fascinating and always original Experimental Show which runs from April 5th through Satur-day, April 30th. We also have the four summer shows working so make sure that you check our web-site under resources for entry forms.

Our next General Meeting will held at the SAWG Gallery on April 11th and it is our fantastic Scholarship program with a guest speaker. They bring their friends and families to join in the joy of receiving a Scholarship. Please plan to participate as you attendance supports these young people in their future endeavors.

Spring Cleaning for SAWG! The next time you get a chance to do any spring cleaning, save your artsy stuff for SAWG. The next rummage sale proceeds will go towards Western Fed for when we host in 2018. If it’s in your way too badly, get in contact with a board member and we’ll stash it at the storage unit.

A Special Thank You to our Donors!SAWG is a group of artists who love to paint. We also show our work at the gallery. Nothing is more exciting

than when our painting receives recognition! It’s always a highlight of the show receptions to see whose work the awards juror picks.

These awards come from a variety of sources. About half comes from the SAWG General Fund. Merchandise Awards include M.Graham Watercolors, Jack Richeson & Company, AZ Art Supply, Dr. Ph. Martin Fine Art Hydrus Watercolors, Blick Art Materials, Daler Rowney, AZ Frame, Golden Artist Colors, and Jack Kulawik.Another source is individual members who donate anonymously for a whole award or a partial one such as the Past Presidents Award. The Wednesday Watercolor Group is another collective award. Some awards specify excellence in a particular category such as use of design, color or the figure. The last source we wish to thank is our memorial awards: the $100 Del Sutton Memorial Fund award and most recently (coming up for the Experimental Show) the Ruth Canada Memorial Fund award. We are grateful for not only all of these donors but for the efforts of Marti White, current VP of Shows, Mary Kramer, and Judy Constantine, Past VP’s of Shows and the show chairs for soliciting these awards.

Thank You All!If you would like to contribute to a specific award in an upcoming show, please let the VP of Shows know.

Substitute DocentsWhat is a Stipend/Substitute? It is someone who can substitute for an exhibiting artist who is unable to fulfill their obligation of sitting the Gallery. Why this is necessary: there are some members who are unable to Gallery sit because they live out of town, work full-time and have busy weekends, or feel that for whatever reason they cannot docent, yet would like to show their work in the Gallery.Although we encourage you to train and become a Gallery docent because it is an excellent opportu-nity to interact with other members on a more personal level, and to meet members of the public that are interested in art, we realize that it isn’t always possible for our mem-bers to participate in this SAWG activity. To fill this need the board has voted to initiate a policy to that will allow members to arrange privately with a group of Stipend Substitutes who are willing to docent for $20 per shift on your behalf. We hope that there will still be those mem-bers who are willing to volunteer to help other members who have medical or family emergencies and need someone to fulfill their docent shifts. If you are interested in being a Stipend/Substitute please look for more information on the Resource page of the SAWG website. We hope to generate a list of qualified docents as soon as possible. If you need further information call or email Dru Hill.

The Gallery still has docenting opportunities that need filling. Email or call Mary Kramer with a date that works for [email protected] 520-260-3918.

LONGTIME MEMBER RECOGNITION

RECOGNIZING LONGTIME MEMBERS OF SAWG

The second in our series of articles to acknowledge longtime members of SAWG features another past president, Tom Hill. You may recognize his name as the author of “Travels With My Paintbox”, one of six books he had published. In 2010, Tom generously donated 250 of his books to SAWG to benefit our programs through the proceeds of sales. You may have also recently seen his work at the Tubac Center of the Arts on display in Nov, Dec. and January 2016. Tom is one of “The Tucson Seven”- a group of some of the West’s most noted artists and painters, all of whom were suc-cessful painters and illustrators in the New York and Chicago publishing worlds before they all moved West to the Tucson area.

It was in 1963 that Tom arrived in Tucson. Through a mutual friend, he got acquainted with Gerry Peirce. They became good friends with their common inter-est in art and especially transparent watercolor. Ten of Gerry’s regular students from his watercolor classes called themselves “the Puddle Pushers”. This group formed the nucleus for the future Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild. In 1967 the group organized and joined the Southwestern Watercolor Society of Dallas. Blanche Judd was elected their first president followed by Molly Hale in 1968. About this time, it was decided to invite well known watercolor teachers to come and give workshops ( the “thing to do” in watercolor so-cieties everywhere). So the first one around 1968 was to be taught by a teacher from Florida. The date and students were all set when a telephone call came from Florida to let the group know the teacher had died. An-swering a frantic call from the group, Tom Hill jumped in and taught his first of many workshops for SAWG. By then he was a member of the American Watercolor Society. Thus began his involvement with SAWG. A year later, Tom became the president of the now 40 + members who were then meeting at St. Phillips Church. The following president (1970-71) was Patty Cooper Hughes. During her term the group decided to leave the Southwestern Watercolor Society. They chose the name, SAWG and Tom decided they needed a news-letter. He designed the original logo still in use today! Times have changed though- it typed and xeroxed and mailed to all members back then for 8 cents apiece.

As Tom’s career took other paths teaching in the States and oversees, writing books on color and wa-

Tom Hill

tercolor painting and showing his work in galleries around the country, he became less active in SAWG but remembers fondly the beginning years. Today he lives in Tubac with his wife, Barbara Hill who is an artist in oils and author of books on painting as well. Thank you Tom for your dedication to SAWG and your many contributions to who we are today!Debra Irons ( excerpts from EARLY SAWG MEMORIES- As remembered by Tom Hill- May 2008).

WORKSHOP NEWS

STERLING EDWARDS - March 15-18In the words of his students, the four day workshop with Sterling Edwards

was “Inspiring and one the best they had ever attended!”Each day started with a funny story (actual or

not) before he began painting. He worked fast but every step of his demo piece was explained in detail.

Topics included an old barn on the first day, an iris painted loosely on the next, an abstract building on the third and finally a total abstract piece to complete the week.

Although the subjects were different the approach was the same. He focused on posi-tive and negative, glazing, composition and on his “four step” process.

The subject of his upcoming book - “The Four Step Process” is as follows:

1. Paint the mid tones saving white paper around the center of interest.2. Put darkest darks in a few places.3. Selectively eliminate whites you don’t need.4. Refine and Detail the painting

A highlight of the week was a fun evening of dinner on the patio of Cushing Street Bar and Grill with stu-dents and teacher alike getting to know each other.

On the final day with an afternoon critique everyone got to see and admire what the other students had accomplished and all left with new techniques and lots of ideas to enhance their future work.
