UR IN TUNE WITH THE EASTMAN SCHOOL OF MUSIC:
Richard Wagner’s Debt to Italian Operatic Form Thursday, April 2nd 4:00pm
The music dramas of Richard Wagner (1813-1883) are widely understood as highly original works in
which the conventions of nineteenth-century Italian and French opera are rejected in favor of
“symphonic,” through-composed musical gestures. Further, these gestures are made up of referential
Leitmotive which are understood to replace traditional arias, duets, choruses, and so on. The author
challenges this view by demonstrating that in the first half of his career, Wagner utilized the
conventional musical forms found in Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, and Verdi, and that he did not abandon
Italian formal techniques even in the more “progressive” works written after 1850. Musical examples
from well-known works including The Flying Dutchman, Tannhäuser, Lohengrin, Tristan und Isolde,
and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg will demonstrate that current received knowledge of Wagner as the
grand innovator who rejected all that came before him is overstated at best, and misleading at worst.
William Marvin has been on faculty at the Eastman School of Music since 2002, where he teaches
undergraduate and graduate courses in music theory and advises doctoral dissertations. Previously he
taught at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. His research on nineteenth century opera, eighteenth- and
nineteenth-century instrumental works, music theory pedagogy, and Broadway musicals has been
published in numerous scholarly journals and book chapters, and he presents regularly at regional,
national, and international conferences. Bill is currently President of the Music Theory Society of New
York State, and he was awarded the University of Rochester’s Edward Peck Curtis Award for Excellence
in Undergraduate Teaching.

“UR” ALWAYS LEARNING LECTURE:
An Unknown River to Explore: John Wesley Powell Making History at the Bottom of the West Monday, April 27th at 4:00pm John Wesley Powell's two expeditions down the Green and Colorado Rivers in 1869 and 1871-72 mark a
turning point in western American history. His expeditions are often considered the "first" trips down the
river, a claim that is both true and problematic. It undercuts those who came before and the
achievements of those who followed in his wake. We will use his journey to launch our own
investigation into his story and its place in American history.
Michael Read is a Ph.D. candidate in colonial and early American History at the University of Rochester.
He grew up eating Lorna Doone cookies while listening to his grandmother's stories from her own
childhood on a ranch in Northern California during the Great Depression.
