Apps Associates Hosts Oracle E-Business Suite on the AWS Cloud for American Commercial Lines

American Commercial Lines, ACL, is a shipping company headquartered in Jeffersonville, Indiana. They move both liquid and dry commodities at scale on the inland waterways of the US. With over 2300 barges they are one of the largest shipping companies in the country.

Migrating Oracle EBS to the CloudACL uses Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) 12.1.3 Financials, Purchasing, Inventory and Asset Management modules. EBS is a mission critical application for ACL and is used by employees across the US. Oracle EBS is integrated into several other applications within the organization and it is fundamental to many business processes.

ACL had been working with a third party hosting organization and they were running EBS in a hosted data center, with single tenant infrastructure.

So why did they want to change? Their hosting contract was coming to an end and they were looking for a cloud solution for their critical applications. Specific drivers for the move to the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Platform were:

• Flexibility (add or remove servers and storage as needed)

• Cost Reduction

• Pay As You Go (no upfront capex)

ACL decided to start work on AWS infrastructure with a development and test environment until they were comfortable with the platform and ready to go live.

Firstly they had to choose a partner to help them with the migration from their hosted environment to the AWS cloud. As Mike McGrath, VP of IT said they chose Apps Associates “because they are specialists in both Oracle EBS implementations and AWS infrastructure. This is vital. You need a partner’s expertise and experience to ensure the right balance between cost and performance.”

Apps Associates and ACL planned a 3 month migration. This included two passes of migration and integration testing. The production migration was very smooth and the transition downtime was only 4 hours.
