Hospitality & Catering

Hospitality is one of the UK’s most exciting and fastest growing industries. It’s the UK’s fifth largest employer, with over 2.4 million people. It’s also packed full of diversity, opportunity and hard workers.

The Hospitality industry offers career paths that reflect its dynamic, often vibrant nature. There are many opportunities to start at the bottom and work your way up to management; you just need to set your goals, gain the appropriate experience and training and then work hard. You could even open your own business down the track.

Some sectors of the industry provide the more traditional vertical career paths, such as the kitchen where it is possible to move up from being an apprentice chef up through various positions to head or executive chef.

Many chefs move on to become owners/operators of their own restaurants or move into management positions in hotels.

Career paths in the hospitality industry are very flexible. With enthusiasm and industry experience, your hospitality career is only limited by your knowledge of what is possible!

Within this sector, we offer Apprenticeship programmes at Levels 2, 3 and 4:

• Hospitality Team Member

• Commis Chef

• Chef de Partie

• Hospitality ManagerHospitality Manager

Retail & Commercial Enterprise

Walk down any high street, and you’ll see chain stores, independent shops, cafés, hairdressers, pubs, and restaurants. You could put yourself in a strong position for a job in any one of them with an Apprenticeship within Retail and Commercial Enterprise.

Within this sector, we offer the following Apprenticeship programmes at Levels 2, 3 and 4:

• Retailer• Retail Team Leader• Retail Manager When most people consider retail as a career possibility, they often think of casual part-time roles in shops or working shifts, including weekends and irregular hours. However, the retail industry is a big business with numerous facets to it.

The retail sector is very diverse and ranges from the smallest corner store to a market trader to the most significant department stores and supermarkets. Over 3 million people work in nearly 300,000 retail businesses in the UK.

The retail sector also includes catalogue sales and internet based stores.

You could find yourself advising customers, arranging window displays or learning how to manage a shop. You could pick up experience in sales and marketing; both are essential for any business.

“My apprenticeship has given me back my confidence and allowed me to believe in my abilities. It has given me a passion for learning and inspired me to encourage others to take up an Apprenticeship and realise their own potential”

Ofsted June 2017 - Grade 2 in all areas In June 2017 Smart Training and Recruitment undertook a full Ofsted inspection whereby the organisation maintained its Grade 2. Smart Training and Recruitment are incredibly proud of the result. This is what Ofsted said:

• Apprentices benefit from highly effective support from training advisers and employers. They develop high levels of confidence and good industry skills which enable them to progress well and make a valuable contribution to the businesses in which they work.

• Leaders and managers have developed excellent relationships with employers, enabling them to deliver high-quality programmes that meet local and regional needs and the needs of apprentices.

• Employers value the expertise that apprentices develop during their programmes and they recognise the improved contribution that apprentices make to the businesses.

• Training advisers use their recent industry experience effectively, enabling apprentices and trainees to apply their learning in a variety of work contexts. As a result, they gain high levels of confidence and develop good, industry-standard skills quickly.

• Training advisers support apprentices well through regular and timely review meetings, during which they monitor their progress and provide effective feedback which enables apprentices to make good progress

• Leaders and managers have developed highly productive working relationships with employers. They have worked collaboratively to improve the choice and relevance of the qualification units available to their apprentices and to develop in-house training packages.

Traineeships

A traineeship is a training programme with work experience that unlocks the great potential of young people and prepares them for their future careers by helping them to become ‘work ready’.

Designed to help young people aged 16-to-18 who don’t yet have the appropriate skills or experience, traineeships provide the essential work preparation training, English, maths and work experience needed to secure an apprenticeship or employment.

The flexibility of traineeships offers employers the opportunity to help build a pool of high-quality future recruits for your sector.

Traineeships are very flexible, and by working closely with us, we can design a programme which suits your needs and those of the trainee.

At the end of their traineeship, each young person will be guaranteed a job interview if a role becomes available or an exit interview together with meaningful written feedback to help them secure an apprenticeship or employment with another employer.

If you decide to offer a trainee an apprenticeship, you could be eligible for an apprenticeship incentive for employers of £1,000

What Are The Benefits Of Offering Traineeships?

Traineeships have been developed in response to research showing that young people frequently lack the knowledge and experience employers expect in the workplace. Traineeships will help to tackle this problem while benefiting your business in the following ways:-

• Employers can design a high-quality traineeship

in partnership with Smart Training - one that suits

both the needs of your business and the needs of

the trainee.

• Traineeships allow you to nurture the next

generation, helping your business to develop a

loyal, talented workforce. Your current employees

will have the opportunity to build their own

mentoring and coaching skills, supporting the

trainee.

• All training costs are covered by Government

funding, including a free job site to post your

traineeship opportunities.

Apprenticeship Levy, what you need to know

What is the Apprenticeship Levy?

In May 2017 the Government introduced the apprenticeship Levy to help fund three million new apprenticeships by 2020. The Levy applies to all industries in the UK and has replaced previous apprenticeship funding models.

Who pays the Apprenticeship Levy?

All employers in the UK who have an annual wage bill of £3 million and above are required to pay into the levy using their Apprenticeship Service Account. This equates to approximately 2% of the nations employers. This same group of employers will also receive a 10% top up to their Apprenticeship Service Accounts based on their monthly contribution.

What about if you are an SME and are not required to pay into the Apprenticeship Levy?

Non-Levy (SME) employers are able to access Apprenticeships under a co-funded model. The Government will pay 90 percent of the agreed price whilst the employer must fund 10 percent of the total cost. Employers with less than 50 members of staff are entitled to fully funded apprenticeship training for each 16-18 year old they employ.

What is the Apprenticeship Service Account?

This is the online portal available to levy paying employers. This is where you will be able to view all available funds and transaction history aligned to your organisation. Employers will select their provider of choice from a list of approved apprenticeship providers alongside entering learner details once ready for enrolment. In 2018 the Apprenticeship Service Account will be available for all non-levy paying employers too.
