BROOKE Appointment of CEO

INTRODUCTION About Brooke

Brooke has been improving the lives of vulnerable working horses, donkeys and mules – as well as the communities that depend on them – for more than 85 years. Established by an inspirational British woman, Dorothy Brooke, rescuing former war horses working in Cairo, the charity has grown to become an international lifesaver. The animals are worked to and from the market carrying produce, or operating as taxis, as traction in waste management, and also in construction, carrying sand, stones or bricks. A working equid is vital to the whole family. For women around the world, they reduce the time and effort spent on daily household chores, carrying water and firewood, often over many kilometres.

Brooke operates across some of the world’s most challenging areas, working directly with 1.7 million animals and 1.1 million owners, with millions more benefiting as Brooke training, empowerment and system change ripples through whole countries. With more than 600 staff members across the globe, 500 of whom work in 11 developing countries in Asia, Africa, and Central America, the Brooke team includes vets, animal welfare experts and development specialists.

Our vision and mission

Our vision is of a world in which working horses, donkeys and mules are free from suffering.

Our mission is to transform the lives of vulnerable working horses, donkeys and mules around the world. We relieve their immediate suffering and create lasting change by working with people, communities and organisations.

Our Values

We are proud to be Brooke. We are resourceful, share new ideas and help each other succeed. Together we make change happen.
