Why should you choose Dulwich College Shanghai Minhang

Dulwich College Shanghai Minhang opened in August 2016, the eighth Dulwich College International school in Asia. Set in a stunning campus, the College is a well-resourced, purpose built school with 21st century learning spaces and world-class facilities.

The Dulwich family of schools shares an excellent reputation, a common ethos and high educational standards. Our team enjoys frequent opportunities to interact with peers at other Dulwich schools, sharing best practice, collaborating on action research or planning professional development events. Working in a network opens up a wide range of future career opportunities, and as the network expands beyond the UK and Asia, these opportunities will only grow.

Due to the growth of the College, we are looking to appoint additional teachers to join our talented team of professionals. We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated teachers who bring a passion for teaching and learning and a proven track record of going above and beyond for the children in their care.

If this sounds like you we would love to hear from you.

THE COLLEGE

DULWICH COLLEGE SHANGHAI MINHANG WILL CATER FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AGED TWO TO EIGHTEEN

Dulwich College Shanghai Minhang opened in August 2016 for students from Toddlers to Year 7. All students study compulsory Mandarin Chinese up to the end of KS3. The senior school will grow year on year.

Students in Years 10 to 13 will follow internationally recognised and respected IB curricula that will afford them admission to leading universities worldwide.

Like its sister schools, Dulwich College Shanghai Minhang emphasises the development of the whole child. Students at DCSM have the opportunity to take part in a number of collaborative group events throught the year, such as the Diversity Project (a series of music workshops and concerts across the schools), the Dulwich Games (a sports tournament for Junior and Senior School students), the Shakespeare Festival, and conferences for students and teachers spanning a variety of topics.

TEACHING AT DULWICH COLLEGE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS

A LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE

Teaching in an international school is a different experience from teaching at home. Living in an international context forces us to look at life from completely new perspectives and raises our cultural awareness. Across the group, our students hail from over 50 countries on 6 continents. Many teachers find it enormously fascinating to live in such a diverse community, as they further their careers while exploring new cultures, not only through their travels but also in their day-to-day encounters with members of the school community.

ACADEMIC

Our curriculum is based on the English National Curriculum, modified to suit the needs of international students. At our Colleges, examinations are taken at the same time as they are in the UK. In Years 10 and 11, students take IGCSE courses and in Years 12 and 13 students take the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, as these courses cater for international students.

Teachers whoare new to the international school environment are often pleasantly surprised by our class size. The maximum class size is 22 students except in the Early Years, where class sizes are smaller and strict adult/child ratios are observed.

As in London, admissions at Dulwich Colleges in Asia are academically selective, and Dulwich College Shanghai Puxi will follow suit. Teachers who are new to Dulwich have commented that the students are not only exceptionally able and engaged in their learning, but highly creative, confident and polite.

Our Colleges’ educational philosophy places equal emphasis on a student's intellectual and personal development, and students are encouraged to participate in a wide variety of activities both inside and outside the classroom.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Dulwich Colleges offer all students the option to take part in ECAs after school. Every teacher is responsible for taking part, by running an after school club, coaching a team, or getting involved in another activity. Teachers with a particular hobby, interest or skill can propose activities to run.Our teachers find that clubs can be a fun way of interacting with the students beyond the confines of a classroom or the strict rigour of a curriculum.

PERFORMANCES

Dulwich Colleges in Asia have a strong focus on music and the performing arts, frequently collaborating on music and drama events and festivals. Our Colleges have outstanding professional theatres, and they put them to good – and frequent - use. All the Colleges put on dramatic productions, and all Junior School and DUCKS teachers are expected to be involved in the organisation – casting, directing, producing, and sometimes even writing the assemblies, plays and musicals.

OUR PARENTS

We strongly encourage parents to support and be involved in their child’s education, and all Dulwich parents are members of the Friends of Dulwich, which provides an effective channel of support between the parent community and the school. Working closely with the schools, the Friends organise class representatives to help with selected class-based activities and events.

Friends volunteers also organise social activities, fundraising events, and support for familieswho are new to the community. They are dedicated and enthusiastic supporters of our schools, giving generously of their time to help make our events and celebrations a big success.

INTRODUCTION TO DUCKS

Our curriculum is based on the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage One programme of the English National Curriculum, and is guided by four principles:

• Every child is a unique individual who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured.

• Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships.

• Children learn and develop well in enabling environments, where their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parents.

• Children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates.

In Year One and Two, children are taught English, mathematics, Chinese, music and PE. Humanities, ICT, art and design and cultural studies are taught through integrated curriculum topics throughout the year. Science is taught either as a discrete subject or through integrated curriculum topics, depending on the topic each term. Valuable cross-curricular links are made where possible to enhance children’s learning.

Our small class sizes allow us to give each child the individual help he or she needs. Each class has a qualified and experienced teacher and a Mandarin assistant teacher. Our classrooms are bright and colourful and are designed to encourage reading, observation and discussion.

We aim to create a caring, exciting and rewarding environment that will give all of our children a love of learning and all our teachersgreat opportunities for development. We look forward to welcoming you to DUCKS.

INTRODUCTION TO THE JUNIOR SCHOOL

At Dulwich our aim is to ensure that all the children in our care are happy, confident, well motivated, enthusiastic and excited about life. We aim to provide an appropriate and balanced academic challenge to allow all students to realise their potential and to prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of Senior School and adult life.

We use an enhanced form of the English National Curriculum, which provides our students with a broad-based curriculum that develops skills, knowledge and understanding, as well as an appetite for knowledge and learning.

In the Junior School the children are grouped according to ability in mathematics and Mandarin to ensure that the pace of learning and teaching style are progressively tailored to suit each child’s particular needs.

Children are encouraged to participate in an extensive range of extra-curricular activities. They may learn to play one or more instruments, be part of a choir, ensemble or orchestra, and take part in sport, be it competitive or recreational.

The College has a vibrant House system, and every child and teacher is assigned to a house. Throughout the school year, students represent their Houses in a variety of friendly events, such as spelling, poetry, maths, music and football competitions. Children also earn House Points through good behaviour, manners, impressive work and good effort.

Every child and teacher in the Junior School take part in a dramatic production during the school year. Productions take time, energy and dedication – and they are always a big hit with students, parents and staff.

If you are an enthusiastic and committed teacher with a passion for learning, you would be very welcome to join us.

INTRODUCTION TO THE SENIOR SCHOOL

In keeping with over 400 years’ of Dulwich College experience and tradition, DCI schools take pride in Dulwich students’ achievements both in and out of the classroom. We give our students the greatest possible opportunities to develop their creativity, athletic abilities, positive personal qualities and self-esteem. Students come first.

The Senior School at Dulwich College Shanghai Puxi shares this ethos. It will open with a cohort of students in two year levels (Years 7 and 8), expanding upwards each year until graduating its first class. The first teachers in the Senior School will have wonderful opportunities to grow with the school and shape its development.

From the beginning we will deliver a rigorous academic programme, based on an enhanced form of the English National Curriculum, that gives students both breadth and depth of learning. With the opening of Years 10 to 13, the College will offer internationally recognised and well-respected curricula that pave the way for entry to the world’s leading universities.

The Senior School will be exceptionally well-resourced and located in a brand new 37,000m2 campus housing state-of-the art classrooms and laboratories, a 540-seat theatre, two black box theatres and an 8 lane, 50 metre Olympic pool.

LIVING IN SHANGHAI

Founded in 1291 as a small fishing village on the Yangtze River Delta, Shanghai has become China’s most prosperous and cosmopolitan city, with an estimated population of over 24 million. The city spans both sides of the Huangpu River. Puxi, on the west side of the river, is filled with a fascinating array of old and new architecture, while Pudong, to the east, evolved from farm land to skyscrapers in the space of about a decade, starting in the mid-1990s.

Shanghai’s history is unique in China. Puxi, with its plane tree-lined streets, art deco buildings and charming old villas, is filled with remnants of the European presence in the city, which dated from the mid-19th century and reached its zenith in the 1930s. Puxi also saw the founding of the Chinese Communist Party and was home to Dr. Sun Yat Sen and the Soong family. Pudong, across the Huangpu River, with its meteoric development, bears witness to the unparalleled economic growth that China has experienced in recent years.

The people in Shanghai speak Mandarin Chinese (“putonghua”) as well as the local dialect, Shanghainese (“shanghaihua”). Although English is not widely spoken or understood, it is very easy for non-Chinese speakers to navigate the city. Street signs and maps are usually written in both English and Chinese characters, and a number of apps are available that provide information and directions in both languages. The Shanghai Metro is inexpensive, covers a huge portion of the city, and is very simple to use, with station signs, directions, and ticket machines in both Chinese and English.

The health care infrastructure is among the best in China, with international clinics and hospitals located in every expatriate neighbourhood. The facilities offer state-of-the-art equipment and are staffed by locally and foreign trained English-speaking staff who are sensitive to cultural differences.

Page 16: Applying to Dulwich College Shanghai Minhang · The College prepares children to live their lives honestly with a spirit of respect for themselves and others 7. The College understands

The food scene in Shanghai is stunning. The city teems with diverse and interesting restaurants in all price ranges, offering cuisines from every region of China and every corner of the earth. Food and beverage apps are well developed and popular, providing ratings, information and GPS maps. A number of small grocers and online distributors sell imported foods and locally grown produce, including organic fruits and vegetables.

The variety of shops in Shanghai reflects its rich cosmopolitan history. High-end international designer shops abound along Huai Hai and Nanjing Roads, while the smaller streets of the former French Concession and nearby neighbourhoods are filled with tiny boutiques selling unique jewellery, clothing, cashmere, bags, shoes and home décor items. Many shops offer handmade shoes and bags, and tailors are found on nearly every block.

Shanghai offers an abundance of entertainment options. For children there is the Aquarium, the Dino Water Beach Park, the New World Ice Skating Rink, Shanghai Circus World and the ERA Acrobats. The Shanghai art and history museums, along with a number of smaller museums, are fascinating and deserve a relaxed visit. But one of the best ways to spend a few hours in Shanghai is simply to walk along the old streets of Puxi, where, within the space of a three or four blocks, you may find a high rise, a temple, a park, a decayed villa dating from the 1930s, a renovated villa from the same era, a tailor, a street food vendor, a convenience store, a tyre shop, a trendy vegetarian restaurant, a boutique, a bicycle repair shop, and a charming little coffee shop, perfect for stopping to appreciate the resplendence of Shanghai.
