Describe the major focus of the presentation and why it is important.Introduce each of the major topics. To provide a road map for the audience, you can repeat this Overview slide throughout the presentation, highlighting the particular topic you will discuss next.***The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is a nonprofit medical research organization founded by aviator-industrialist Howard Hughes and is one of the largest philanthropies in the world.

Through its Department of Science Education, HHMI supports the Medical Research Fellows Program and the Summer Medical Fellows Program that provides medical, dental, and veterinary students with one-year and summer research opportunities.

The programs enable medical, dental, and veterinary students to immerse themselves in basic, translational or applied biomedical research for a year (Medical Research Fellows Program) or summer (Summer Medical Fellows Program). These programs give you an opportunity to decide if you would really like to make research a part of your career in the future. This is a chance for scientific exploration and professional growth that will greatly enhance your future career.

You must be eligible to work in the U.S. to participate in either program. Prior research experience is not required (except for the Janelia Farm option), but is extremely advantageous.

Note: For the Summer Medical Fellows Program, you are not eligible if you have already been awarded a full-time year-long research training award (the purpose of the summer program is to encourage students to pursue a year-long research training program after their summer experience).*Medical Fellows in the year-long program may conduct their research at any academic or nonprofit institution in the U.S., except for the NIH. So, if youre in medical, dental or veterinary school and youre working with a mentor and would like to continue the project, you can stay at your own institution. But you are certainly not restricted in your choice of institution. Research may even be conducted at an institution outside the U.S. as long as your mentor is affiliated with a U.S. fellowship institution (on faculty).

You must select a mentor and write a research proposal as key components of the application to the program.

In addition to receiving outstanding research training, there are regional events that will enrich your HHMI experience. Med Fellows are divided into regional groups based upon their fellowship institution and each regional group gathers during the year for panel discussions, career advice, and for the Fellows to share their research with one another.

(Photos: Clockwise from top left: Harvard Medical School, UCSF Mission Bay Campus, Boston Med Fellows regional group with HHMI investigator Todd Golub at their lecture/lunch series, Baltimore regional symposium dinner at Hopkins chair of neurosurgerys home; HHMI investigator Charles Sawyers speaks at New York regional symposium; Med Fellow Katie Cook talks with her mentor, HHMI investigator Elaine Fuchs).New as of last year-- HHMI is seeking highly talented students with an interest in neuronal networking and/or imaging for an intense year-long research training experience at the Janelia Farm Research Campus, a world-class biomedical research center in Ashburn, Virginia. Students should have a proven track-record of research accomplishment and a commitment to a basic research field being pursued by Janelia Farm investigators. Applicants receiving a fellowship will be matched with a research mentor at Janelia Farm and will live and work on the campus, located in the Washington, D.C. area. This year, we have 3 Med Fellows who will be working and living at Janelia Farm (from Chicago Medical School, UCSD and Yale).

*Medical Fellows at Janelia Farm applicants are encouraged to have a mentor and project in mind at another fellowship institution in the event their initial application does not progress in the Med Fellows at Janelia Farm competition. Those not progressing past the interview stage are strongly encouraged to complete the standard Medical Fellows Program application with a mentor at another fellowship institution by January 11.

*Applicants may not concurrently have two Medical Fellows applications in the HHMI Competition System (e.g., a Medical Fellows at Janelia Farm application and a standard Medical Fellows application). However, Medical Fellows at Janelia Farm applicants may apply to the standard Medical Fellows Program, with a mentor at another fellowship institution, after notification in early or mid-December that their Medical Fellows at Janelia Farm application is not progressing to the next stage of the competition.

Med Fellows financial support during the year is summarized on this slide.

Medical Fellows receive a fellows allowance that can be used for medical, dental, and vision insurance, education-related expenses incurrent as part of the fellowship, and a research allowance that can be used for travel to scientific conferences, Med Fellows regional events, HHMI science meetings, books, and some research-related expenses (although the mentor is expected to fund the majority of the research costs).

Note: Med Fellows at Janelia Farm will receive an annual salary of $29,000 as an employee of Janelia Farm, health insurance, on-campus housing and many other benefits. They will not receive a fellows allowance, but will receive a research allowance for related books, conference travel and courses ($5,500), and relocation expenses (up to $1,500).

Photos: top: HHMI investigator Dr. Michele Pagano presents his research to Med Fellows at the New York symposium; bottom: Med Fellows listen to the speakers at the symposium in New York.*Here are some statistics on the applicant pool and who was accepted.

Besides the fellows themselves, another strength of the Sarnoff program is the mentors. After acceptance, each Fellow is paired with a member of the Scientific Committee who helps the Fellow find the highest quality lab that studies an area that interests the student. The success of a research year depends not only on the mentorship he or she receives in the lab but also on the mentorship in choosing a lab.The Scientific Committee Advisor remains in contact with the Fellow and the laboratory mentor to monitor the years progress and makes a site visit early in the fellowship. The current annual stipend for the fellowship is $27,500 that are provided as monthly payments.

An applicant is not expected to have chosen a laboratory before receiving the fellowship. After a fellow has been granted the fellowship, he or she will work with the Board advisor to choose a number of laboratories that would provide an optimal research experience. Up to $7,000 is provided for travel expenses related to these lab visits, moving expenses, health insurance and computer equipment.Applications for the Sarnoff Fellowship Program must be submitted online on the Sarnoff website. The website also contains names of potential Sponsors at most US medical schools. You may also contact Dana Boyd for more information.

Thank you for your interest. Ill be happy to answer any questions.
