COURSE DESCRIPTION: Applied music in piano is designed for those students
looking for a more intensive learning experience by working in a one-on-one lesson
setting.
LENGTH: One semester, 32 hours of instruction. All Applied Lessons for
academic credit are 1 Hr. in length. Lessons taken for Enrichment (notated with a
“C” after course number) may be ½ Hr. in length.
TEXT: There is no required text for this course. However, students may be asked
to purchase works according to their playing ability.
SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS: Students are required to bring a spiral bound
notebook to each lesson to keep as a practice log, and to come prepared for each
lesson with a pencil and all music that has been assigned. A 3-ring loose leaf binder
is suggested for supplement music and practice sheets which will be distributed
periodically.
GOALS: Each student will be required to learn three different pieces of varying
styles, by memory. Students will be required to perform in two studio classes; one
recital; and final jury at the end of the semester. Dates and times of studio master
classes are located on the Kellogg Community College/Music web site. Students are
responsible for accessing this information and making personal copies of each form.
Other objectives will be set with the instructor, based on each individual’s playing
ability and personal goals.
ATTENDANCE: Students are required to make all scheduled lessons. In the event
of illness or family emergency, absences will be accepted. Students are required to
contact the instructor in advance so that other arrangements may be made for make
up lessons. Please allow 24 hour advance notice if at all possible. .
GRADING SCALE: Attendance and preparation will be the primary focus
concerning grades. Final grades will be based on the following:
Attendance 40%
Preparation 40%
Performances 20%
COURSE OUTLINE: Each student will learn three pieces of contrasting styles
using correct technique patterns in practicing and knowing every aspect of material
taught in each lesson. Lessons will also include technical exercises, such as scales,
triads and inversions, arpeggios, chord progressions and theory. Information given
will be based on each student’s playing ability and level of musical knowledge.

SPRING FACULTY RECITALS, TO BE GIVEN AT THE FIRST LESSON. A
DETAILED SCHEDULE OF ALL PERFORMANCES WILL BE GIVEN AND
DISCUSSED AT THE FIRST LESSON FOR THE SEMESTER.
