  • CHAPTER 1PRASNA AND ITS UTILITY

Prasna is a very important part of astrology and is verl' use-fuI. In some cases, onlythe prasna astrology is helpful. The Prasnameans rvhen we reply a question based on the horoscope preparedfor the date and time when a querent has approached for astrolqgi-cal help. Generally, the prasna is madc when the querent does nothave a birth horoscope. It is very important that whenever a querenthas approached for the first time, the time and date are noted. Theplace would be the location of the astrologer. ln case of a tele-phonic or an e-mail query the place remains as the location ofthequerent

For the researchers and advance learners noting downthe time of the first query is helpful in timing of events andrectification of the birth charts. Even the astrological reme-dial measures prescribed according to the ascendant of theprasna have proved to be helpful in majority of the cases, wher-ever a response was available.

The study ofprasna is very useful: -

When the querent or the person about whom the prasna isbeing made does not have a birth chart.

-To ascertain the ascendant when the ascendant is either inthe ending degrees or the beginning of a new sign. In such cases, the ascendant rising in the prasna generally matches with theascendant ofthe birth chart. The correctness of the ascendant ofthe birth chart is very important to figure out the true functionalnature of the planets in a particular nativity. Not only the func-tional natrre of planets plays a key role in the analysis of a chart

  • 2 Application of Prasna Astrology

but also it is necessary for prescribing the astrological remedialmeasures.

    - To time return of missing persons.

    - To time recovery of patients.

    - To predict recovery of stolen or misplaced items.

    - To predict solemnisation of marriagc. ,

    - To predict success of ncw vetrturos.

The only requircment for the success of the prasna astrologvis that thc quercnt approaches the astrologer without an1, appo'n,-ment for the sole purposc of a query. If a telephonic call is madeto fix up an appointment, then the time of the telephone call isnoted for the prasna while the actual meeting for the consultationmay take place at the appointed time.

Sometimes, it so happens when a person is introduced to anastrologer, the former immediately puts a question. Such a ques-tion should ahvays be replied according to the birth chart of thequerent. In case the querent does not have a birth chart. then he/shc should be asked to contact the astrologer after a rveek or tenda1's rvithout fixing an appointment. If the astrologer is not avail-able at the tlme of the approach made by the querent. then the timeofapproach should be noted and should be used for preparation ofa birth cliart. The prasna chart is prepared in firll for identifuingthe strength of the planets and working out the planetary periodsfor timing the events. The events are timed rvith the help of theoperating planetary periods and the transit influences, both forma-tive and separative.

Even at the cost of some repetition, the essential predictivetechniques of the Systems' Approach have been mcntioned in thisbook so that the case studies included in this book are properlyunderstood by the readers without referring to other books oftheSystems' Approach.

Prasna brings out the main question(s) of the querent basedon the conjunctions, aspects, placements and the operating plan-

ets. If the lord of the fifth house is afflicted- the prasna mavpeftain to the progenic n-ntters. If the lord of the seventh house isaft-lictcd. the qucstion ma1' pertain to spouse or marital affairs orforeign visit or foreign stal . All the conjunctions. aspects. place-ments and the operating planctary periods are to be studied u,ithreference to the ascendant and not treating the house pertaining tothe relation about rvhom the question is madc as al1 ascendant forrepl-ving the question. For example, if onc rvants to know about thespouse then the influences on the seventh house are consideredand the seventh house is not trcated as the ascendant ofthe spouse. This is further elaborated in the case studies included in thebook.

CONCEPTSMajor Constituents of the System of Astrology

The divine science of astrology has four major constituents, that are signs, houses, planets'and the planetary periods. It will bein the fitness of things if the four constituents of the system arebriefly discussed for developing the understanding for learning theHindu system of astrology.

    A. SIGNS

The first constituent of the system is signs. They are twelvein number and are ruled by the planets indicated against each ofthem:--

  • Concepts

You u'ill observe that the planets Mars, Venus, Mercury- Ju-piter and Satum rule over trvo signs. These planets have specialattention to one of their signs and this sign is known as theirrnooltrikona sign. The signs Aries, Virgo, Libra, Sagittarius andAquarius are the mooltrikona sign of the planets Mars, Mercury,Venus, Jupiter and Saturn, respectively.

The signs possess the positive and negative aspects oftheirlords according to their nature and according to the strength of ,their lords. The most important qualrty is that they lead us to inferthe extent of fructifications of the significations of a particularhouse. For example, if the sign Libra falls in a house and its lordVenus is in full strength. the significations of the house in particu-lar will flourish to a very affluent level of the society in which aparticular native (person) is living. The significations of the signshave been detailed in Chapter 3.

    B. HOUSES

The second constituent ofthe System is houses. The housesare tr;velve in number and each of the trvelve houses of the horo-scope deals with specific significations. The significations of thehouses fructify under the planetary periods connected with them. The significations of the houses have been detailed in Chapter 4.The houses are good and bad. The sixth, eighth and twelfth housesare known as bad (malefic) houses as these rule diseases, obstruc-tions and losses, respectively.

    C. PLANETS

The third constituent of the S1,51sm is planets. In Hindu as-trology, we consider the Sun, the Moon, Mars. Mercury, Jupiter.Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu as planets. While the Sun and theN{oon are the luminaries, Rahu and Ketu are the shadowy planets. As the planets Pluto, Neptune and Uranus neither have a lord-ship over a house nor have a planetary period of their own, they can in no way be considered in the predictive astrology.

The planets signifi'various things including the specific bodyparts and the functional s1'stem of health. For example, the Sun

rulcs hcart. digestive system and vitality. The Moon rules the lungs, fluids in body, lymphatic system. etc. The significations of theplanets have been detailed in Chapter 5.

The planets attain benefic or malefic functional nature in anativity (horoscope) based on the lordship of benefic or rnalefichouses. The planets may be weak or strong. The functional maleficplanets when influencing other planets or houses cause afflictionsto them.

The planets, r,r,hen placed in a particular sign, are consideredas exalted/debilitated. In their signs of exaltation the planets be-come strong while in their signs of debilitation the planets becomeweak. The planets become exalted or debilitated in the signs men-tioned against each:

Various tvpes of planetan/ periods for spccific planeta[' combina-

tions are mentioned in classical texts. But- rve lvill consider onll'

Vimshotri dasa system in this book as this is universally appli-

cable for all sets of combinations in a nativity.

results of the significations and houses ruled bl' them in their subperiods. More light on this will be thror,vn at appropriate places in

    the book.

    SIGNIFICATIONS OF SIGNS

    1. ARIFS: tt is a fiery sign and presided over by the

significator of energy, Mars. The Sun, the significator of vitalitr'-

is exalted in this sign. These factors render the natives born in this

strong and beneficially disposed. In case @suffers from rvounds- fevers, short-temperedness, diseases of im-

pure blood, inflammatory dtsorders.brarn- cranlum and taclal Dones.

    debilitated in this sign.

When this sign rises in the ascendant, the body description

    HOW TO ANALYSE CHARACTERTSTICS

The placr:ment of a significator in a mgveable sign makes aperson dynan ic in nature. The placement of a significator in afixed sign makes a person less flexible in approach. The place-ment of a significator in a common sign makes a person of adjust-able nature.

, The placement of the significator in a fruitful signindicates early gains while the placement of the significatorin a semi-fruitful sign indicates slow gains. The placementof a significator in a barren sign indicates gains after lot ofefforts.I

, Th. airy element makes a person thinker, creative and spiri-tualist while an earthy element makes a person pleasure-seeker

,and he is persistently engulfed in materialistic pursuits. The waterelement makes the person ease-lover and keeps him fully involvedin worldly attachments.

The positive element shows greater chance of success. Thehuman element makes the approach of a person humanistic in lifeand he is generous, helpful and respectful to others.

SOME OTHER CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SIGNS

    Sex of the Signs

  • Signitications of Signs

    Prishthodaya Signs

Aries. Taurus. Cancer. Sagittarius and Capricorn are signs

that rise rvith their hind parls first. If a significator planet is placed

in these signs and is an indicator of tin-ring the event. it r'vill cause

    the event early.

    Sirsodaya Signs

Leo. Virgo. Libra, Scorpio. Gernini and Aquarius signs rise

with their head first and indicate that normal time rvould be taken

for the fructification of an event.

    Ubhyodaya Signs

Pisces rises with both sides. The events are timed with the

help of the strength of tl-re planet in question and the placemeflt of

the planet in the srgn Pisces does not make a difference.

    Reptile Signs

Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are knoun as reptile signs.

    Directions of the Signs

Aries, Leo and Sagittarius rule the east direction. Taurus'

Virgo and Capricorn rule the south direction. Gemini, Libra and

Aquarius rule the rvest direction.. Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces rule

the north direction. The directions in the prasna analysis are

identified from the placement of the significator planet in a par-

    ticular sign.

    NOMENCLATURE OF HOUSES

    ANGULAR (KENDRA) HOUSES

    ' '

The first, fourth, seventh and tenth houses are callcd angular

    houses or kendra houses.

    Trines (Trikona houses)

The fifth and ninth houses are called trines or trikona houses.

First house is also considered as a trinc.

  • Signitications of Houses l7

    Malefic or dusthana houses

The sixth, eighth and trvelfth houses are called malefic houses

    or dusthana houses.

    Benelic houses

All houses, other than the malefic houses, are treated as

benefic or auspicious houses under the Systenis' Approach.

    Extent of Houses

Under thc Systems' Approach the extent of each house is 30

degre a-lr-s"d on the basis oi

p'I5Gifr6nt of the planets in a particular house. Their longitudinal

difference from the degree rising in the ascendant does not makg a

difference. lhe degree rising in the ascendant is considered as the

effectivegree rvould be considered as the most effective point of all the

hoilles Supposc l0 degree rises as the ascendant in Leo. The

frfrit effective poinl of all the houses would be l0 degrees. The

planets placed in a house having longitude betr, veen 5 degree to 15

degree would be influencing the most effective point of the con-

    cerned house.

The significations of houses fructify under the planetary

periods connected with them. The nature or extent of signifi-

cations is dependent on the strength of the lord of the house,

strength of the significator of the house and the effects on the

house itself. The significations of the houses suffer if their lords

and significators are weak or they or their lords are under the

    influence of functional malefic planets.

  • CHAPTER 5

    SIGNIFICATIONS OF PLANI| 'TS

    1. SUN: The Sun signifies highly placed porsons, adminis-trators, physicians, contractors, politicians, father, male child andsocial status. The Sun is karaka for vitality and life giver in a malenativity. He is bilious and has sturdy bones. It is hot, dry, construc-tive and represents health, blood, brain, digestive system, right eye(male) and lcft eye in the case of females. In case it is weak andafflicted in a nativity it gives rneak eyesight and diseases of head-aches, erratic circulation ofblood, bone fractures, fevers. high bloodpressure, baldness, bone cancer and low immunisation power. CONJUNCTIONS AND ASPECTS

When two or more planets have same longitudes, the con-junction is known as an exact conjunction. lf thc longitudinal dif-ference happens to be less than five degrees, the conjunction isknown as a close conjunction.

Similarly, when trvo or more planets mutualll' aspect eachother on the same longitudinal degree or a planet casts its aspectexactly on the most effective point of a house or houses. thcaspect is knonn as exact aspect. Ifthis aspect is rvithin a longitu-dinal diflerence of five degrees, then the aspect is knorvn as aclose aspect.

The conjunctions or aspects with more than fivc degrees lon-gitudinal difference are wide conjunctions or aspects. These'donot have permanent impact in life except the short lived transitinfluences on the planets involrred in wide conjunctions or aspectsseparately and severely.

    ANALYSING STRENGTH OF PLANETS

Those planets are considered weak, which are in their signsof dlbrilitatlion, are combust, are in the state of olc! age or infancyand placed in the malefic houses in the rasi chart. The S1'stems'Approach also considers a planet weak if it is placed in themooltrikona sign of another rveak planet and if a planet occupiesits sign of debilitation in t[9_nar,'amsa and other varga charts. third house in the sign Aquarius ruled by Satum. The Moon is a

functional malefic planet as it mles the eighth house. Since the

not only it mars the initiatives of the person but during the sr-rb

IDENTIFYING RESULTS OF MAIN OR SUB PERIODLORDS

Events fructif in the periods of indicative planets. There-fore, it is very important that rve understand the method of analysingthe dasa (main period) and bhukti (sub period) results.

Though various types of conditional planetary periods fbrspecific combinations in a nativitl'are mentioned in classical tcxts,Vimshotri dasa 51,51ep has 6een mentioned for general applica-tions. Based on the longitude of the Moon in the natal charts. thebalance of operational Vimshotri dasa is calculated. Thereafter, the planets have their main periods in a seriatirn. The order of themain periods (Dasa) under the Vimshotri dasa system is the dasaof the Sun followed by the Moon. Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn,Mercury, Ketu and Venus.

During the major period of a planet all othcr plancts shareperiods proportionate to their period in the Vimshotri dasa. Thisshare of period is known as sub-period (bhukti) and thc tirst sub-period in a planet's own main period is allavs its orvn fblloll'cdby other planets in the seriatim mentioncd abovc.

    Combust planets

When the Sun is a functional benefic planet its conjunctionlvith other well placed functional benefic planets is good and givesexponential growth for the significations of planets which are inclose conjunction rvith the Sun. The combust planets suffer underthe transit malefic influences.

When the Sun is a ftinctional malefic and is closely conjunctwith other planets all the planets involved suffer as they becomeafflicted by the conjunction of a functional malefic planet perrna-nently because of the natal affliction. The combust planets in suchcases suffer in transit afilictions.

    BADHAKA PLANETS

The principle ofbadhaka house is redundant. For various as-cendants from Aries to Pisces, the planets Saturn. Saturn, Jupiter-Venus. Mars, Jupiter. the Sun, the Moon, Mcrcury. Mars, Venusand Mercury are treated as Badhaka planets. Under no circum-stances- these planets act maleficalll'for thc various ascendants. If

  • Advance Analytical Techniques 3l

the so called badhaka planet is not closell, associated u,ith otherfunctional malefic planet or the most malefic planet, its influenceon any planet or the most effective point of a house, would neverbe bad.

    KENDRADHIPATI DOSHA

Similarly, the Kendradhipati Dosha is also a redundant con-cept. It is said that lvhen a natural benefic planet owns a kendrahouse its functional nature for the nativitv becomes malefic. Thereaders can find out for themselves that if the mooltrikona sign ofa natural benefic planet falls in a kendra house its influence onother functional benefic planet or the most effective point of ahouse would always be beneficial. However, whenthis planet formsmutual close conjunction or aspect with other functional maleficplanet, its own general and particular significations would suffer.

These two concepts, that is the Badhaka Planets andKendradhipati Dosha, have been stretched by those, who neverdid empirical studies and failed to interpret charts with one singleapproach.

    rMpAcT oF yocAs (PLANETARY COMBTNATTONS)

The particular conjunctions, mutual aspects and placementsin a natal chart are known as yoga. It may be a Rajyoga, Dhana5,oga,Duryoga, Mahapurush yoga. Mahabhagya yoga or even Kalsarpayoga. The impact of Rajyogas and Dhanayogas accrues only if theplanet(s) is or are placed in a good house, unafflicted and are strong.Whenever. the planets ruling the benefic houses conjoin or mutu-ally aspect closely, they form good yoga (say Rajyogas) connectedwith the indications of both the houses involved provided they arestrong and unafflicted. The involvement of a planet ruling the houseof income and./or wealth produces a Dhanayoga. In other words, mere location of a planet or a set of planets in a particular sign orhouse without creating a close relationship through a close con-junction or aspect does not result into yoga.

Similarly, until and unless the most malefic planet, the func-tional malefic planet, Rahu and Ketu form a close conjunction withanother planet(s) they do not produce any Duryoga or even Kalsarpa

    IDENTIFYING PRASNA INDICATIONS

The prime determinants of prasna are rveak planets and oneor more afflictors, explained below, involved in close conjunc-tions rvith other planets or the most effective points of the houses. If a planet is under the affliction of an afflictor, the following as-pects will be touched:-

    l. General significations of the planet.

    2. The significations of the house containing mooltrikona signof the afflicted planet.

    3. The significations of the house where the afflicted planet isplaced.

For various ascendants the following planets become theafflictors:

    Aries Mercury, Rahu and Ketu

Taurus Venus, Jupiter, Mars, Rahu and Ketu.

    Gemini Rahu and Ketu.

For spotting the indications of the prasna procccd as undcr :

    l. Identiff the malefic influcnce of thc afllictor(s) on the

most effective points of various houscs and thc rrcak

    planets.

    PRIME DETERMINANTS OF PRASNA

afflicted planets as mentioned above and the sub periods of the

planets placed in the malefic houses. These sub periods lead to the

irends that contilue throughout the sub periods and the trends can

be rel, ersed ifthe afflicted planets are strong and the follorving sub

periods are of strong, well placed and unafflicted planets'

Transit Influences: The studl' of transit influences on the

Prasna. Sometimes, the problem is inordinately prolonged due to

the close transit influence of slorv movit'tg planets of the prasna

planets. If the afflicted planets of the prasna are strong' the

problern ends after the transit impact is over. If the natal afflicted

planets are weak and badly placed and the sub periods of the

uffli"tot. are in progress then the problem turns into constant

    problem.

    TIMING OF EVENTS

The prasna may pertain to the significations ruled by the plan-

ets andthe significations of the houses containing mooltrikona signs

of the afflict"d *d/or badly placed planets. Tirning of the results

is worked out as per the strength of the operating or forthcoming

well placed lords ofthe sub periods and or separation of the rnalefic

transit afflictions. If the problem has been caused by the operating

sub period then the span of the problem may be for a longer dura-

tion and can only be reversed in the sub period of a rvcll placed

strong functional benefic planet. If the problem has been caused

b), a transit malefic influence on a r.vell placed or strong planet,

the span of the problem may be when the causing transit malefic

ilfluence separates. For desired results, application of astrological

remedial measures detailed in chapter 8 are prescribed. If the

native has a natal chart then the remedies are suggested as per the

natal chart. Ifthe native does not have a natal chart and he/she has

contacted for the first time, the remedies are suggested as per the

    ascendant of the Prasna.

  • CHAPTER 8

THE APPLICATION OF I\S'I ' ITOLOGTCALREMEDIES

To help pcople come out of their problcms thc qucrcnts areadvised appropriate astrological remedial measures. Thc problemsin life are caused by weak planets and./or afflictions to them. There-fore, two rvay application of astral remedies is administered afterdiagnosing the problematic planetary influences in a chart. Firstly, the strength is provided to the weak functionally benefic planets. The strength can be provided by various methods, e.g. stones, colourtherapy, KAVACH (the protective shield containing mystical num-bers of the planets) in an auspicious time. Secondly. the malevo-lence of the functionally malefic planets is reduced by offeringpropitiatory charities concerning these planets. The two r,vay ap-plication helps in reducing the impact of rnalefic planetary influ-ences to a large extent. The preventive use of astral remedies ismuch more useful than the curative astral remedies.

Generally, people resort to astral remedies in the end aftertrying all other therapies ignoring tlie distinct advantage of pre-ventive diagnostic power of the astrological science. Needless tostress the benefit of preventi'l'c medicinelredressal measures asagainst those ofthe curative nlcasures.

For both - curative and preventive remedies - the judiciousmixture of the following astral remedies is applied.

COLOUR THERAPY: This is a very potent prcvcntive rem-ed-v for epilepsy. mental retardation. psl, chic problcrns. ctc. and ispractised through the use of favourable colours in the matters ofdress and fumishings in one's living room.

  • The Application of Astrological Remedies 39

(As per the opinion of experts compiled by a Library inPittsburgh the grey colour of cars w'as found to be the r,vorst in carsafety.) As per our colour therapy. we had always been suggestingto avoid grey colours by those desirous ofhappy living and good

    health.

VASTU: Againthis is preventive as well as curative therapyfor solving the problems in physical and spiritual areas. Widerappl icat ions of this therapy are in the f ie ld of success ofprofessional ventures. This is practised through use ofoutlay ofa building to derive geo-magnetic forces for properly energisingthe total impact of building with the help of light, air, space andaura conducive to the main functionary.

KAVACH: This is a protective shield containing mysticalnumbers of the functionally benefic planets in a nativity and is astrengthening measure. The weak and afflicted planets are enabledto protect and promote their significations. The Kavach is worn ina specially elected auspicious time for generating the desired im-pact. This is used both for preventive and curative purpose.

CHARITIES: These are offered for the planets causing af-flictions/problems in a horoscope

MANTRAS: As part ofthe meditation, the recitation of Man-tras is prescribed for propitiating the trouble causing planets as perthe Vedic rituals.

The malefic influences are effectively tackled with the helpof propitiatory measures for the afflicting planets which are asunder:-

The Sun Give handful of wet wheat with 15-20 gramsofjaggery (Gur) to a cow or serving one's fa-ther or helprng old age needy persons.

Rahu Giving away brown coloured sweets to thebirds or helping old age needy persons orlepers.

Ketu Offering some food to a stray dog or serving/helping institutions/persons working forspiritualism.

These remedies are to be performed daily in the morning af-

    ter bath and before breakfast.

The vveakness of the significator planets, as indicated earlier,

are made up with the help of a specially prepared KAVACH to be

worn by the native in an auspiciously elected trme. For details of

the design, size and mystical numbers to be engraved on both sides

of the KAVACH, the readers mayplease refer to our book, "Pre-

dictive Techniques and the Application of the Astrological Reme-

    dial Measures".

These Kavachs (Yantras) get power to do good when the en-

gravings are done in an auspicious time as also due to a prescribed

way of life. The person prescribing use of the KAVACH shoulc

    follor,v the follgwing:-

    l. Bath in the morning without any bed tea, etc.

    2. Prayers to Lord.

    3. Performance of propitiatory remedies as per one's own chart.

    4. Practise the divine way in life - that is (l) Be content (2)

  • The Application of Astrological Remedies 41

Increase utility to humanit-v (3) Help poor and needy (a) Bekind, generous and benevolent (5) Avoid deeper involvementin sensual pleasures, anger> pride. greed and enry.

The lords ofthe tenth and the second houses are consideredas the primary determinants for analysing the professional af-fairs. ln case there is no mooltrikona sign in both the tenth andsecond houses. then the lord ofthe first house is considered asthe prime determinant.

The planets Mars and the Sun are badly placed and are

weak. Venus is weak as it is in its sign of debilitation in

havamsa and dasamsa both. Therefore, the presence of

Rahu in the tenth house, ruled by Venus, caused some tension to

the native for his manipulative activities pertaining to the sub

    period of Rahu.

As per prasna the sub period of Saturn was running in

the main period of Ketu. As the sub period lord was strongly

well placed in the chart no harm was seen and the native was

    advised accordingly.

However. to relieve him of the tension he was advised

propitiatory astral remedies for the functional malefic planet,

Rahu, and for strengthening the functional benefic planets, he

was advised to wear a KAVACH in an auspicious time.
