The Apple-store purchasing

Apple did a great job in re-inventing the brick and mortar checkout process for their customers and by just using their own technology with a iPod touch instead of a bulky and expensive cashier system from companies like NCR, IBM or Wincor Nixdorf.

Other big retailers adopted that idea and invested millions into their own solution like Nordstrom, Home Depot, Sephora, Urban Outfitters and Gucci. All those companies did an amazing step into the future of brick and mortar retail using iPod touches and transforming the purchasing experience for their customers compared to their competitors. Today, we are already talking about mobile checkout 2.0 – An iPod touch might be handy but not exactly user friendly, because of it’s tiny screen and offering mobile checkout from anywhere in the store is not the only unique benefit of having mobile technology devices in a store! Mobile checkout 2.0 includes next to a payment option features like showcasing, product look-up, customer order and much more. For these great and amazing features right on the sales floor you will no doubt need a bigger screen in a one to one consultation with a customer! Having said that, mobile checkout 2.0 means bringing the iPads and Android Tablets to the POS!

The cash register will go mobile: In the old retail model, customers browsed in the aisle and paid at the register. This was partly because the registers were hard-wired to phone lines to gain the necessary authorizations. As we move to a world where even the transactions in a shop are transmitted on the back end via the Internet, sales associates will be free to roam the stores and help their customers check out and pay from the aisle or even the changing room… and if they don’t have the right size or color in stock, they’ll order it for you on the spot to be delivered direct to your home.
