When you have completed ~ of the APN-59B Radar Set program, you should

be able to accomplish. the following:

1. Determine the normal pressure range of the APN-59B Radar Pressurization

System and adjust the pressure to the normal range.

2. Set all controls on the following panels to the proper position, prior to system TURN ON:

b. Synchronizer Panel

c. Marker Generator Panel

d. Antenna Panel

The APN-59B Radar Set is a complicated and delicate piece of equipment.

Proper care must be used when operating the set and certain procedures must

be observed prior to use of the APN-59B Radar Set •

The following pages of this booklet will guide you step by step in the

methods of setting up the APN-598 Radar Set prior to TURN ON, the step by step

method of TUNING, and then the proper method for set TURN OFF.

These methods should be used to prevent damage to the set and to prolong

the useful life of the APN-598 Radar Set .

This is not correct. Indicator "A" shows low pres sure . Turn the radar

pressurization switch to the MOMENTARY ON position and allow the pressur e t o

build up to 25 to 35 inches of mercury.

I hope this was your first choice as this is correct. The normal pressure

range for the APN- 59B Radar Pressurization System i s 25 to 35 inches of mercury.

The pressure must be maintained in t he normal range to prevent possible damage

to the system.

If the pressu re is too low, place the radar pressurization switch to the --~~.-..:.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~-- ~-

MOMENTARY ON position and a llow the pressure to build up to the normal rang~.

If the pressure is too high, push the BLEED button IN until the pressure is in

the normal range.

When attempting t o use the APN-59B Radar Set, with a few exceptions,

there are two basic rules to remember prior to system TURN ON.

With these two rules in mind, let' s go to the first of our control panels,

the Radar Set Control Panel. Please TURN to Page 5.

First, let's discuss the FUNCTION Switch. The FUNCTION Switch is the

MASTER POWER switch for the APN-59B Radar Set. The switch selects the mode

of operation. In the OFF position, the APN-59B Radar Set is turned OFF •

Let's take a look at the FUNCTION Switch on the Radar Set Control Panel.

The next control is the RANGE (NM) Switch. The RANGE (NM) Switch se lects

the range and range markers to be displayed on the indicators. The switch

for this switch prior to sys tem TURN ON.

used t o select the heading display at the top of the scope. When the control

The next control is the SCAN Selector. This control allows the operator

to select a left or right rotating scan or a back and forth sector scan.

Let's take a look at the Radar Set Control Panel and determine the proper

antenna remains level with the earth's surface during normal aircraft maneuvers .

In the IXlWN position, the antelU1a remains level with the aircraft. Let's deter

mine the proper position for the STAB Switch.

position prior to system TURN ON. The RANGE DELAY Switch follows the basic rule

the RANGE DELAY Switch.

The last controls are the HDG MK (Heading Mark) Control and the RANGE MKS

(Range Marks) Control. The hexagon shaped control is the HDG MK Control and is

used to control the intensity of the "heading mark." The round control is the

RANGE MKS Control and is used to control the intensity of the "range marks."

Let's take a look at the Synchronizer Panel and locate these controls.

The HDG MK Control is another exaeptio~ to the basic rule that all ~

The ANTENNA PANEL contains only two (2) controls. They are the RELATIVE

BEARING Control and the SECTOR WIDTH Control. They are use.d when the SCAN

Selector, on the Radar Set Control Panel, is in the SECTOR position.

"O" or OFF as appropriate, fill in the correct position for the two controls

MARKER GENERATOR PANEL.

The MARKER GENERATOR PANEL contains two (2) controls that have to be placed

to their proper position prior to system TURN ON. These two (2) controls are

the MARKER INTENSITY Control and the ISO-ECHO Control. The MARKER INTENSITY

Control is not normally used in weather reconnaissance, but needs to be placed

to its proper position. The MARKER INTENSITY Control DOES NOT follow the basic

rule for controls. This control should be "CENTERED". The ISO-ECHO Control

is used in weather reconnaissance to pinpoint the areas of greatest storm

intensity or areas of heaviest precipitation.

Fill in the proper ·position for these two control s on the arrows

The NAVIGATOR'S AZIMUTH and RANGE INDICATOR, commonly referred to as the

Radar Scope, contains two (2) controls that must be properly positioned prior

to system TURN ON.

These two (2) controls consist of serrated wheels mounted on the side of the

indicator face. The two controls, FOCUS and INT (Intensitx), follow the basic

rule in that they should be placed either full counterclockwi se , "O", or QfI. as

appropriate.

Study the picture of the Navigator's Radar Scope below and determine the

proper position for these controls.

The first item on the Pilot's Radar Scope to be discussed is the VID (Video)

Contr ol. The VID Control is used to control the brightness of the video display

and "range marks."

The next control is the PERSIST Control. Movement of this control counter

for background brightness intensi ty control. Let 's take a l ook at the Pilot's

This switch provides the following functions:

HOLD Causes the display to be retained on the Radar Scope for a period of time without any change.

ERASE Removes all previous information from the Radar Scope.

NORM Normal Radar Scope display.

The HOLD-ERASE-NORM Switch DOES NOT follow that basic rule that all swi t ches

must be DOWN prior to system TURN ON.

Place this switch to NORM prior to system TURN ON. Let's take a look a t the

Pilot's Radar Scope and locate the HOLD-ERASE-NORM Switch.

PILOT'S SCOPE

The HOLD-ERASE-NORM Switch should be placed to the position.

is to adjust the intensity of the trace line. This is accomplished by rotating

the I NT Control until the trace line becomes barely visible .

The INT Control should be rotated in which direction when adjusting the

trace line?

a. Clockwise

b. Counterclockwise



Clockwise. Sure. The INT Control was rotated fully counterclockwise prior

to system TURN ON. In order to adjust the intensity of the trace line, rotate

the INT Control clockwise.

NAVIGATOR'S SCOPE

The INT Control should be rotated clockwise until the trace line becomes:

a. as bright as possible.

b. barely visible.



Barely visible is corr ect. The INT Control shoul d be rotated clockwise

until the trace line becomes barely visible.

© The next step is to focus the trace line. The trace line will blur if not

properly focused • ..

NAVIGATOR'S SCOPE

This adjustment is accomplished by rotating the Control

clockwise.

Now that we know to rotate the FOCUS Control clockwise until the trace line

Our next step is to adjust the GAIN Controls. There are two controls, a

coarse adjustment and a fine adjustment.


The inner knob is for fine adjustment; therefore, the outer knob is for •

coarse control until the targets become visible and then use the fine control

to trim the setting of the coarse control for best displat:

• When adjusting the GAIN Controls, they should be rotated:

Clockwise is correct •. The GAIN Controls were rotated fully counterclockwise

prior to system TURN ON. In order to adjust the targets for best display, rotate

the GAIN Controls clockwise.

Remember, rotate the coarse control clockwise until the targets become

visible, then trim the setting with the fine control for best display.

For the next adjustments, let's go to the Pilot's Radar Scope.

The next steps in the adjustments will be accomplished at the Pilot's Radar

Scope. The first of these s teps is the BKGRD (Background) Control adjustment.

The BKGRD Control varies the intensity of the background. Let's take a look

at the picture below and locate the BKGRD Control .

The SCAN Selector is in the PPI position and the RANGE (NM) Swi tch is in the

50/10 position. Therefore, you would expect a~~~~~~ sweep on the scope .

STAB Swi tch, in the DOWN position, causes the antenna ta remain level with the

aircraf t . In the UP position, a gyro keeps the antenna level wi th the earth's

In order to keep the antenna l evel with the earth's surface during normal

with the PATT (Pattern) Switch. In the FAN (Down) position, a fan beam which

is narrow horizontally but wide vertically is displayed. In the PENCIL (Up)

the ~imuth reference for the scope. When the BEARING Switch is in the REL

(Relative) position, the top of the scope is aircraft heading. In the STAB

(Stabilized) position, the display is referenced to the magnetic compass system.

In this position (STAB), the top of the scope is the bearing as set by the HDG

SEL (Heading Sel ect) Control. Let 's take a look at the BEARING Switch located
