This booklet is a prograJllIDed text on the APN-59B Radar Set. The text
will consist of two sets.
Set I will cover th~ prop~r s~ttlqg ~or all contrQl~ prior to system

When you have completed ~ of the APN-59B Radar Set program, you should
be able to accomplish. the following:
1. Determine the normal pressure range of the APN-59B Radar Pressurization
System and adjust the pressure to the normal range.
2. Set all controls on the following panels to the proper position, prior to system TURN ON:
a. Radar Set Control Panel
b. Synchronizer Panel
c. Marker Generator Panel
d. Antenna Panel
3. Set all controls on the following indicators to the proper position, prior to system TURN ON:
a. Navigator's Radar Scope
b. Pilot's Radar Scope
4. Turn the Radar Set ON and make the necessary adjustments for best display.
5. Turn all controls to the proper position prior to system TURN OFF.
6. Turn system OFF.

The APN-59B Radar Set is a complicated and delicate piece of equipment.
Proper care must be used when operating the set and certain procedures must
be observed prior to use of the APN-59B Radar Set •
The following pages of this booklet will guide you step by step in the
methods of setting up the APN-598 Radar Set prior to TURN ON, the step by step
method of TUNING, and then the proper method for set TURN OFF.
These methods should be used to prevent damage to the set and to prolong
the useful life of the APN-598 Radar Set .

of the Pilot's Indicator Scope and ISO-ECHO Contx:.Q_l!..

This is not correct. Indicator "A" shows low pres sure . Turn the radar

From Page 1 Page 4
I hope this was your first choice as this is correct. The normal pressure
range for the APN- 59B Radar Pressurization System i s 25 to 35 inches of mercury.
The pressure must be maintained in t he normal range to prevent possible damage
to the system.
If the pressu re is too low, place the radar pressurization switch to the --~~.-..:.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~-- ~-
MOMENTARY ON position and a llow the pressure to build up to the normal rang~.
If the pressure is too high, push the BLEED button IN until the pressure is in
the normal range.
When attempting t o use the APN-59B Radar Set, with a few exceptions,
there are two basic rules to remember prior to system TURN ON.
~place all control knobs either full counterclockwise, "O", or OFF
as appropriate.
~ place all contro l switches to the IX>WN position.
With these two rules in mind, let' s go to the first of our control panels,
the Radar Set Control Panel. Please TURN to Page 5.

MASTER POWER switch for the APN-59B Radar Set. The switch selects the mode
of operation. In the OFF position, the APN-59B Radar Set is turned OFF •

One control on the Pilot's Radar Scope not previously mentioned is the BRILL
(Brilliance) Control. The BRILL control wheel opera t es a polaroid filter which
enables scope viewing in a dark environment. The BRILL control wheel will rotate t
• 360 degrees which varies the filtering from dark to clear. <
Adjustment of the BRILL Control, light or dark, is left to the personal
desires of the operator. Let's take a look at the Pilot's Radar Scope and

This completes the TURN ON procedures for the APN-59B Radar Set. After
using the set and before shutting the Radar Set down, all controls shoul d be
returned to the position they were in prior to system TURN ON. Recalling the
two basic rules to follow prior to system TURN ON; all controls to be either
full counterclockwise, "O" or OFF as appropriate and all control switches OOWN.
Let's take a look at t he Pilot's Radar Scope and on the arrows provided, fill
in the correct position for all controls prior to turning the Radar Set OFF.
