The early days

Topic about library network in Asia and the Pacific started from 70s. For example in Indonesia, The national documentation and information networks were estabilished in Bandung, West Java, 1971 covering science and technology, medical science, agriculture, social science and humanities. And the 1st Congress of Indonesian Librarian was held in 1973, also in West Java.

APLAP founded 1990

In the year of 1990, APLAP was founded in Seoul, South Korea. This is maybe the first where Asia and the Pacific has the librarian international organization.

Almost 40s countries

The Association of Parliamentary Librarians of Asia and the Pacific is an organization for parliamentary libraries and parliamentary research and information services in the Asia Pacific region, from almost 40s countries are represented in APLAP’s membership. From Australia, Indonesia, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, and even Turkey. In 2011, APLAP added Afghanistan and Timor Leste as a new member, and Iran in 2015.

APLAP goals

APLAP was founded to encourage cooperation and knowledge sharing between bodies that provide library and research services to Parliaments in Asia and the Pacific. The organization has an important role in promoting information sharing and good practice in client services among its member libraries.

Conferences and training days

APLAP organises conferences and training days, every two years, where these activities offers members the opportunity to:

Learn from other colleagues in parliamentary libraries/research services

Get and sharing new ideasTo identify trends that will affect services in the

futureBenchmark services against international best

practice for parliamentary libraries/research services

Member of IFLA

Since 2012 APLAP has become the member of IFLA (International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions). IFLA, with 150 members countries arround the world, is the leading international body for library and information services. IFLA also has a section specifically focusing on the work of parliamentary library and research services.

IFLA full rate member

 IFLA Conference registration fees;

Whenever member of APLAP want to attends IFLA conference, they could pay as a full rate IFLA member, it means cheaper than non full rate member.

APLAP membership provides an important opportunity to peer networking, to meet our counterparts from the region and the world. And to learn how the librarian from other countries do their works through personal contact with them.

What we can do…To build a networkTo share our knowledge in librarianship

technique for example to make an index, thesaurus, online forum, computer and database knowledge;

Build cooperation to share our collection, legislative collection, law, research journal, thru the online services.

We can maybe also make a training between our staf/librarian/researcher/IT expert.
