The word Rune has several meanings, these encompass Mystery, secret: council & lore, magical sign & written characters. It is believed that the Runes were in use by 200 BCE, when the earliest surviving runic inscriptions were written. Somewhere around 200 CE, the Elder Futhark was recorded on a metal helmet. The Elder Futhark consists of 24 Runes and is what is most often used today although there have been other variations arise over the years, one of these being the Armanen Futhark/Runes. This was an 18 Rune system synthesised by Guido Von List, around the late 19th century/early 20th. This system is still used by modern German Magicians. As a traditionalist I use the original 24 Rune Elder Futhark. Traditionally the Runes are carved in wood or stone, but bone & metal have been used also when appropriate for a particular magickal application. The Runes were most widely used by the Anglo-Saxon Germanic tribes, Goths of Eastern Europe, the Netherlands, England & the Danes and Vikings of Scandanavia. The word Rune has several meanings, these encompass Mystery, secret: council & lore, magical

sign & written characters.

It is believed that the Runes were in use by 200 BCE, when the earliest surviving runic

inscriptions were written. Somewhere around 200 CE, the Elder Futhark was recorded on a metal

helmet. The Elder Futhark consists of 24 Runes and is what is most often used today although there

have been other variations arise over the years, one of these being the Armanen Futhark/Runes. This

was an 18 Rune system synthesised by Guido Von List, around the late 19th century/early 20th. This

system is still used by modern German Magicians. As a traditionalist I use the original 24 Rune Elder

Futhark. Traditionally the Runes are carved in wood or stone, but bone & metal have been used also

when appropriate for a particular magickal application.

The Runes were most widely used by the Anglo-Saxon Germanic tribes, Goths of Eastern Europe,

the Netherlands, England & the Danes and Vikings of Scandanavia. The Danes and Vikings of

Scandanavia are collectively referred to as The Norse. To this day more of the Norse writitngs have

survived than of the other Germanic peoples.

The religion most widely followed by those who use the Runes is Asatru.

The 24 Runes are divided into three sets of eight, know as Aettir - ie; families, and a name of a god or

goddess is given to designate each Aett.

The Elder Futhark:

The Speech Of The High One

I know I hung on that windswept tree.

Swung there for nine long nights,

Wounded by my own blade,

Bloodied for Odin,

Myself and offering to Myself:

Bound to the tree

That no man knows

Whither the roots of it run.

None gave me bread,

None gave me drink.

Down to the deepest depths I peered

Until I spied the Runes.

With a roaring cry I seized them up,

Then dizzy and fainting, I fell.

Well-being I won

And wisdom too.

I grew and took joy in my growth:

From a word to a word

I was led to word,

From a deed to another deed.

The Nine Worlds

Norse mythology has kept was is known the Cosmology of the German Heathen alive and compared to the straight forward Christian Cosmology of Heaven, Earth & Hell, the Germanic version is quite complex & intricate.

There are nine worlds, all in self- contained dimesions, but all are interconnected. Some of the worlds are of matter and some of anti-matter. There are those of Nature, while others are of Spirit. These nine worlds are known as the Multiverse.

The Multiverse is referred to as The World Tree and is called Yggdrasil. The roots of The World Tree reast in the tri-level Well Of Wyrd (the container of all phenomenon), that which brings fourth all Manifestation in the nine worlds.

On the top level of The World Tree is Asgard, flanked by Vanaheim on the left and LossalFheim on the right.

ASGARD is the highest metaphysical realm and there resides The Aesir - Gods & Godesses of War, Will and Intelligence. They personify self-conscious and ordered evolution.

VANAHEIM (home of flowing water) is where The Vanir reside - Gods & Godesses of Nature & Fertility. They personify the survival instincts and evolution through natural selection.

When mankind was in its infancy the Aesir and the Vanir were enemies and fought a fierce war. The Vanir won then offered peace to the Aesir and they accepted. Now united their functions are intertwined. The most well known Gods/Godesses that make up the Aesir are Odhinn, Frigga, Thorr and Loki. But it is written that in Asgard there are twelve divine Gods and twelve divine Godesses. Those of the Vanir are Njord, Jord, Freyja and Freyr.

LOSSALFHEIM is the dwelling place of the Light Elves who are the shapers of thought and matter, also warder of the natural world. the allegiance of the Light Elves is given to Freyr, who received the kingdom as a gift from the Aesir.

On the next (middle) level is Midgard flanked by Jotunheim to the right and Swartalfheim to the left. The middle level is inhabited by humanity.

MIDGARD is the second highest metaphysical realm. This realm is seperated from the top and the one beneath it by many rivers and a vast ocean that is made up of the blood from Ymir. Within the ocean lives a terrible serpent called Jormungund (mighty wand), he encircles Midgard totally and bites his own tail. Though there is a bridge made up of air, water & fire known as Bifrost (shimmering path) or Asabru ( the bridge of Ases), that connects Midgard to Asgard.

JOTUNHEIM is north-east of Midgard, they are seperated by a river and towering mountains of ice and snow. This is the home of the Giants - preconscious beings of [necessary] dissolution & chaos. Jotunheim has a common border with Midgard & Asgard and this is made up of the forest known as Jarnvidr (iron wood), here dwells the might wolf Fenrir (fen/swamp dweller) is will slay Odhinn in the final battle called Ragnarok (destruction of the powers)

SVARTALFHEIM is north-west of Midgard and is the home of the Dark Elves or Dwarves. It is said that they live in the mountains, grottos and caves. The are known to be very shrewd, excellent smiths, also shapers of powers & form and emotions & matter. They make amazing magickal items that are coveted by the Gods. Their leader is Modsognir (frenzy roarer) and he has a deputy called Durinn (sleepy).

The lowest metapysical tier is made up of Niflheim, Hel and Muspellheim.

NIFLHEIM lies to the north of Midgard(to the left of Hel). This is the land of the dead - souls unworthy of entry into Asgard. Described as a place of bitter cold, mist and unending night - ice & darkness.

HEL (concealed) is not a place of eternal punishment but rather a place of rest for the souls that are awaiting rebirth to Midgard. It is said to be a rather pleasant place not unlike Midgard but there is a hall of punishment, for those wicked souls, know as Kvollheimr (home of twilight).

Hel is connected to Asgard by a bridge called Gjallabru (resounding bridge). From Migard it can be reached by way of a road called Helvegr (Hellway). It is seperated from the land of the living by a gate known as Nagrind ( corpse gate).

Beneath Hel is a dark place called NIFLHEL (concealed mist). This holds the souls that are too evil to be accepted into the halls of the Goddess of the Dead - Hella (concealer) - they are passed down into final darkness and die a second death into oblivion. They are then consumed by the serpent Nidhogg (vicious blow). Nidhogg also nibbles on the roots of the World Tree.

MUSPELLHEIM is a region of pure fire. Here the fire-being Surt (black-one) is the ruler of the 'sons of Muspell', who venture forth to join in the battle against Asgard's dwellers in the final conflict or Ragnarok (destruction of the powers). This will destroy the Nine Worlds but not the World Tree.

This is all a part of the history of the Runes.

Here I will give you some basic information on some of the Gods & Godesses of The Aesir and the Vanir.

BALDUR (the Bold), is the beautiful God. He is the son of Odhinn and Frigga. Having premonitions of his death, Frigga asked all things no to harm Baldur but failed to ask the Mistletoe because she considered it "too young" and thus harmless. Ultimately he is killed by a shaft of mistletoe that was fashioned into a spear by Loki ( the trickster God). He descended into Hel with his wife Nanna by his side and rose again after Ragnarok. He embodies the seed of the new world to come after the end of this world cycle. He is one of the Aesir and will inherit his father's throne as chief of the Gods.

FREYR (the Lord), is the son of Njord and the twin brother of Freyja. One of the Vanir, he is the patron of fertility & the deity of /Pleasure. He is the ruler of the realm of the light elves responsible for the growth of vegetation. He is considered to be the noblest of the brave gods or warrior-gods and is called upon for protection in battle. Also seen as the giver of riches and growth in all fields of endeavour. The patron of summer sunshine. His main attribute being his erect penis, he is probably the closest northern equivalent to the more politely-fertile horned God of Wicca.

FRIGGA (Lady - All Mother), is Odhinns wife and the mother figure of Norse mythology. She is also know as the "Silent Seeress" and Hlin (protectress). Her handmaiden is called Fulla (abundance) and she has a messenger named Gna (Plenty). Renowned for her knowledge, she is also famed for never giving anything away, not even her husband. This knowledge consists of the Wyrd ( destiny) of the Universe through her connection to the Norns. She has the ability to shape-shift into a Falcon. Frigga is usually depicted as a tall stately woman, beautiful in a white dress and heron plumes. She is the patroness of the northern housewife and mother, carrying a set of keys at her girdle.

HEIMDAL (the Home Brightener), also known as Vindlher ( watchman), he possesses the Gjallarhorn which he blows at the onset of the Ragnarok. is the shining God, guardian of the rainbow bridge which leads up to Asgard and his hearing is so acute that he can hear the grass grow and even hear wool growing on the sheep. He is also the protector of those seeking higher consciousness.

IDUNNA (the Rejuvenator), is the wife of Braggi, God of Poetry. She is responsible for the health of the Gods, they must eat a golden apple a day from her as-wood casket so they can keep their strength and youth. Apples are considered one of the holiest symbols of life and rebirth among the Germanic folk.

LOKI (the Trickster God), is a very complex character and it would take alot of reading to explore him fully. He is Odhinns blood brother but the connection runs even deeper than that, he is the shadow side of Odhinn. He is a good guy & bad guy all in one. Being both help and a menace, he not only gets others into trouble, most often he gets them out of it also, albeit a little reluctantly. He has giant in his ancestry as does Odhinn.

Page 6: api.ning.comapi.ning.com/.../ThewordRunehasseveralmeanings.docx  · Web viewThe word Rune has several meanings ... his father's throne as chief ... basis will help to lay down the

NJORD (the Earth Enjoyer), is the god of the sea and the patron of sailors and fishermen, also know as the 'Blameless ruler of all men he is the father figure of the Vanir, a well seasoned brave warrior and a bestower of riches.

ODHINN (Frenzy - the Inspirerer), is the Allfather, patron of poets, warriors and statesmen. Also God of the dead, war & magick. He can inspire either enlightenment or madness. He carries a spear called Gungnir, which never misses and has Runes engraved on the shaft which uphold the law. He rides an eight -legged stallion called Sleipnir and gathers warriors to fight beside him at the Ragnarok and feast in Valhalla (the hall of the chosen). He won the Runes for mankind by an act of personal sacrifice and gave his right eye for wisdom. From his high seat he sees all and hears all from his two Ravens, Huginn (thought) and Muninn (memory). His throne is protected by twin Wolves, Geri (greed) and Freki (rapaciousness).

THORR (the Giant), also known as the Thunderer, Son of Earth, God of ferility & generation, also defender of the Realm of the Gods and the Mankind who together represent the forces of Order against the Forces of natural Chaos, personified as Giants. He is Odhinns best known son. He is depicted as a red-bearded Giant whacker wielding a magick hammer called Mjolner, killing giants though is more of a hobbie than an occupation. Order and Chaos are both necessary for evolutionary momentum. He's not all that bright but has thunder and lightening in his armoury. In fact he is quite soft hearted, popular and resourceful when he has to be.

TYR (Heavenly-God), is the fighting God, the general of the pantheon, whereas Thorr is more the foot soldier and Odhinn the statesman. Despite his nobility and reputation for honesty he is forced to swear a false oath when the Fenrir Wolf is bound and loses his right hand to the beast as a penalty. Loki bred this wolf and left him in the care of the Aesir. As he grew larger and became more ferocious, Tyr was the only one that would feed and tend to him. The other Gods feared Fenrir so much that they had a fetter made by the dwarfs and got Tyr to place it on the wolf. He had to trick the wolf into believing it to be a test of strength and had to place his hand in Fenrir's mouth to prove honesty. As soon as Fenrir realized he could not get free he snapped Tyr's hand off.

These are just a few of the more known of the pantheon of Norse Gods, all have fascinating tales attached and for those that would take the time to explore Norse mythology in more depth the rewards would be great.

CRAFTING YOUR OWN RUNES

Traditionally Runes are crafted from wood or bone, clay, metal or stone has and can also be used or any object that has special significance for you. Try to avoid using any synthetic materials.

RISTING

The most traditional method is to use the wood from a tree that bears fruit, nuts or cones. For those who wish to approach making the Runes in the way of ancient customs, it is appropriate to select a living tree for your timber. Approach the tree with reverence for it is a living being. Ask the tree's spirit for permission to take the branches you need. The power of the tree will be in you Rune Staves. If possible, choose a branch that is North pointing. When cutting, keep in mind the purpose for which you are severing it. Select a branch that is not too thick, keep in mind the size that will be comfortable in your hand, remember you will be making 24 Runes for the most used Elder Futhark. Remove the bark from the branch while the wood is green, it can be hard to remove when seasoned. Cut your 24 slices, you can sand the surface of the cut slices or leave them natural this is up to you.

Now you are ready to Rist or score your Runes. The word Rist or Risting is the act of cutting or sawing especially used in relation to the Runes. It comes from the Old Norse word Rista.

Prepare your self psychologically and spiritually by quietening the mind. When you are ready, concentrate on the task before you. Contemplate Odhinn as the Rune Master and chant an invocation that you have memorised that concentrates your intention and invokes your will to impart power to the risting, or recite the following:

Woden Within

Woden Without

Help my Hand

Page 20: api.ning.comapi.ning.com/.../ThewordRunehasseveralmeanings.docx  · Web viewThe word Rune has several meanings ... his father's throne as chief ... basis will help to lay down the

To Rist the Runes Aright

It is a good idea to draw you Rune symbols in pencil on your stave blanks before risting begins, to ensure accuracy for the finished set. Always start from the bottom and work up and/or outwards. This can be difficult to master as we are usually used to drawing or cutting in the opposite direction. There is a magickal reason for this reversal. We are drawing the power of the Runes from the natural elements, from the Earth, so to remind the Runer from whence he/she draws their power and to channel it magickally, we follow this method. It is important to make an effort to retain the traditional Runic proportions when preparing Runes for divination and magickal usage. These proportions will give a volume area that is divisible by three, such as four units high by one and a half wide or four units high by three units wide. Working out the proportions for the rest of the Runes yourself will give you a good feel or their structure. By observation of each stave before commencement of risting, you will find that no one Rune has more than six component strokes.

CHANTING

With a sharp knife (traditionally, one that has been set aside and dedicated specifically for this purpose) or wooden carving tool, commence to Rist the Runes one at a time in the Futhark order (ie. starting with Fehu and finishing with Othala). Think of each Rune's meaning and chant its name to yourself as you work. It may not be possible to do all in one sitting. If this is the case, then only do one Aett at a time, that is from Fehu to Wunjo, then Hagalaz to Sowilo and finally from Tiwaz to Othala. In magickal lore, the best time for risting is the waxing moon, that is, between the new and the full moon.

STAINING & CLAIMING

The next stage is staining your Runes. You may use pigment, ochre or paint. Red is the traditional colour as it represents the fiery force of creative energy. This is reflected in our own bodies in the colour of our blood, our own life force. When staining you are claiming the Runes as your own by symbolically adding your life force to them. To continue ancient tradition, you many choose to add your own blood to the pigment or just use your blood alone for the staining as was done in ancient times.

Prepare yourself as you did before Risting the Runes. In magickal lore, the optimum time to stain the Runes would be the three nights of the full moon ( one night for each Aett or the middle night of the three for staining them all). Using a thin paintbrush or appropriate tool, paint in the grooves using single line strokes, much the same as you would if you were painting or drawing them on paper. You can tidy them up after the basic lines that compose the Rune are stained in the grooves. Use the Futhark order. Whilst doing so think of each Rune being alive with power; recite its name and/or qualities. When you have finished, chant a song of power of your own divising to fix your intent; or recite the following:

Page 21: api.ning.comapi.ning.com/.../ThewordRunehasseveralmeanings.docx  · Web viewThe word Rune has several meanings ... his father's throne as chief ... basis will help to lay down the

Urd, Verdhandi, Skuld,

In Well and Web be Found

Rune Might flows by Cunning Skill

And in these Staves be Bound

Now spend some time in meditation on your completed ritual and its significance.

Place the completed Rune Staves in a natural material bag eg.linen, wool or leather or a wooden, metal or stone box ready for use. If you don't need the Runes immediately, it is traditional to wrap them in dark cloth and conceal them for a period of nine days. This is symbolic gestation.

You can choose to do this or not. Concealing them for nine hours or even nine minutes still enacts the ritual significance of creation, gestation and birth. By doing so you are mythologically (and magickally) recognising the Rune Staves as a living entity ie. a source of cognative awareness, that you have brought into being. This ritual engenders respect for the Runic mysteries and the handling of your Staves.

The Staining can be done to a store brought set also, whether or not they are new or you have had them for some time. By painting (or applying your own blood) in the grooves, you are recharging and personalising the Runic vitality inherent in the Rune shapes.

The use of Linseed oil as a preservative for wooden Rune Staves is traditioanl. This oil will prevent the paint/pigment or blood from being worn away from constant handling. It also stops the wood from splitting as it drys out and looses its own natural oils over time. Some runers choose to use a natural varnish such as Shellac to finish and seal their staves. This can also be used on stone and its compounds such as fired clay.

Below is a translated version of an old Anglo Saxon Rune Poem, you may wish to recite these verses and apply a verse to each Rune Stave as you craft them, if you cannot come up with any words or your own choosing.

FEHU - Wealth is a comfort to every man, yet shall every man dole it out greatly, if he wishes before the Lord to gain glory.

Page 22: api.ning.comapi.ning.com/.../ThewordRunehasseveralmeanings.docx  · Web viewThe word Rune has several meanings ... his father's throne as chief ... basis will help to lay down the

URUZ - Aurochs is fierce and horned above, a very savage beast - it fights with horns - a well known moor-stepper; that is bold.

THURISAZ - Thorn is very sharp, for any thane to grasp, harmful, immeassurably cruel to any man who rests amid them.

ANSUZ - God (Odhinn) is the source of all speech, the support of wisdom and the comfort of the wise and to every earl happiness and hope.

RAIDHO - Riding is, in the hall, for every man easy, and very hard for him who sits upon a powerful horse over miles of road.

KENAZ - Torch is by all living known for its fire, shining and bright; it burns most often where the nobles rest inside.

PREPARATION FOR CASTING & READING THE RUNES

The basis of all meanings in Rune layouts must be related to the concept of the two-fold division of time with the allowance of what is yet to come. Each division had been assigned a female deity who was not only a guardian of her division but also a living expression of its function. These beings are known as the great "Norns". The relationship is as follows:

Urd: That which has become - the immutable past, which has objective reality.

Verdhandi: That which is becoming - the fluctuating present, which has subjective reality.

Skuld: That which should be coming - the unmanifested present (future), shich is dependent on the interplay of the other two functions.

Before attempting any casting, the Runer should prepare him/herself psychologically and spiritually. The best way to do this is by firstly seating yourself, facing North (the sacred ancestral direction) if possible, then breathing deeply and rhythmically emptying the mind and relaxing the body.

When you feel that your mind is clear, contemplate the Three Norns (Nornir) and their functions. Tune yourself to the vibrations of the Web of Wyrd. Know that the only realities are the ever-present "past" and the ever-changing "now". The "future" is only a potentiality. You can call on the Norns either mentally or out loud. Chant Urd, Verdhandi, Skuld until you sense an attunement with the patterns of time. Next call on Odhinn, as Master of Rune Lore, for the inner vision to read the Runes correctly, with this simple formula or something similar.

To Read the Runes Aright

You may also have a deity that you feel particularly close to that you may want to call on as well. You will feel when the time is right to begin casting.

A white cloth, is suggested as a neutral field to cast or place your Runes. This is traditional and serves not only to keep your Runes clean, but provides a psychic field free from distraction when you are contemplating their meaning, regardless whether you are selecting the Runes to place in a pre-ordained pattern or casting them at random. In some forms of casting, a grid for working, composed of three concentric circles representing from inner to outer - Urd, Verdhandi, Skuld - is either marked on it or is super-imposed mentally.

When formulating a question, hold the Rune bag (or container) in your hands. If you are asking for someone who is present you may allow them to hold the bag before you do, to assist in attuning the Runes. It is important that the querent have a clear cut question. The Runes reveal their meanings best if approached precisely. Try to avoid framing ambiguous queries until you develop the skill to read on multiple levels. When casting for someone else, have them speak the question. This focuses their thoughts it also helps you to choose your level of interpretation, ie. material, emotional, mental or spiritual, or a blend of any.

As your intuitional/psychic skills develop, coupled with your knowledge, you may discover that verbalisation of the question by the inquirer is not always needed. If there is no particular question you ask the Runes to pick up on the energy surrounding the subject. You may find yourself getting "flashes" of meaning or mental pictures and words, but do not be afraid to ask questions. Sometimes a key word on their behalf will help unlock deeper meaning.

If you are unsure of an interpretation, review the elements that stand out. They will usually "latch on" to you. In psychic matters, it is best not to over - analyse or be too logical. Remmeber, the conscious mind is a receiver of the hidden (unconscious) knowledge and is not the sole arbiter in your decisions. Feel what is right rather than think it. If you feel you cannot understand what the Runes are telling you, try another direction.

Consulting a good Rune book on a regular basis will help to lay down the intellectual foundation for you to be able to work spontaneously with your own interpretations of individual castings. Always remember to record your castings, so you may come back to them at a later date for reference.

By doing this, you may consciously observe the Web of Wyrd in action. It will also reveal to you how your divination ability is progressing - your perception of the Orlog in the Well. Treat the Runes with respect. It is not advisable to let others handle your Staves unless it is part of a reading.

By handling the Runes exclusively, you intermingle your psychic field with them, establishing a strong bond/resonance. If your friends wish to experiment or learn Rune casting, have a spare set for this purpose.

When you have finished your reading, you may close the procedure by chanting affirming words of thanks such as:

Hail the Norns that Nurture All!

Hail the Well that Ward All!

Hail the Rede that Rights All!

Odhinn, the great Rune Master, speaks to us across the centuries. His words:

Do you know how to cut them, know how to stain them,

Know how to read them, how to understand?

Do you know how to evoke them, know how to send them,

Know how to offer, know how to ask?

It is better not to offer than to offer too much for a gift demands a gift.

Better not to slay than to slay too many.

Thus did Odhinn speak before the Earth began when he rose up in after time.

These Runes I know, unknown to kings' wives

Or any earthly man. 'Help' one is called,

For help is its gift, and helped you will be

In sickness and care and sorrow.

Another I know, which all will need

Who would study leechcraft.

On the bark scratch them, on the bole of trees

Whose boughs bend to the East.

I know a third

If my need be great in battle

It dulls the sword of deadly foes

Neither wiles nor weapon wound me

And I go all unscathed........
