Class Structure Model ProjectModel ProjectReferenced throughout the semesterFoundation for project management artifactsNote: I will introduce a specific scenario / project for a given assignmentHistorical, current or fictional*

*Please coordinate with me if you need to select a fictional project

#

DAY ONE10 Class StructureModel Project every student will have a model project (historical, current or fictional) This model project will be used throughout the semester to create project management artifacts.Note: on occasion, I may introduce a specific scenario / project in place of or in addition to your model project for specific assignments.

Class Structure Reading Assignments

TextbookFoundational reading to understand conceptsThe structure follows PMIs definition of project managementThe goal is to learn project management not become a PMPSupplemented with articles, presentations, papers that focus on project management in public health

#

DAY ONE10 Class StructureReading AssignmentsWe will use Schwalbe as our foundation to understand the conceptsBased on PMINote: The goal is to learn project management, not become a PMP. But it wont hurt to learn PMIs approach. We will supplement with articles, papers, presentations that focus on the practice of project management in public health

13

PMI ArticlesWe have 6 Required articles from PMI @$15/articleJoining PMI gets you access to all articles for freeYou also receive a digital edition of the PMBOK

Class Structure Modules Introduction

Module IntroductionWe will use a 2030 minute video and PowerPoint to introduce modulesSupplement to the written background information which will also be included

#

DAY ONE10 Class StructureStructureI plan to use a 20-30 video / PowerPoint presentation to introduce topics and explain assignments. This will be used to supplement the written intro which will also be included for every week / module

Ive learned that I am more of a guide than instructor in this distance learning format. So, I use the PowerPoints to introduce topics and also guide your reading and assignment approach. It also lets me go off script and bring in anecdotes and principles from the application of these principles in public health.15

Module and Assignment Schedule (in BB) one stop shot to get a glance of the semester. Learning modules will contain more detail on readings and assignments.

Panopto Introduction I use these to introduce the topics (not try to teach them that is what the readings are for). I also try to draw in specific public health applications and concepts as well as some anecdotes that may help to explain my gray hair.

Wednesday Office Hours / Discussion PeriodJon and Gretl will be available for an online discussion every Wednesday during the semester from 7:00pm 8:00pm EST. We will use this time to answer questions on assignments, readings, etc. We will also use this time to engage in dialogue on non-written assignments (as opposed to writing narrative responses in a discussion board). Participation for sessions that include discussion of non-written assignments is mandatory and will factor into your participation grade. If a student cannot attend, he/she must provide a written response to discussion questions before the Wednesday session.

Class Structure - ModulesModuleDescriptionModule 1 The Storm of ManagementWe are laying the foundation for the remainder of the course. We will introduce the nine knowledge areas and five process groups as defined by the Project Management Institute (PMI). Module 2 So the Project Looks Like What?We will dig into some of the PM tools. We look more closely at the Common Ground and CDC UP methods, and then learn how they drive the planning process and management of a technology deployment. We will be discussing and deriving planning tools to reflect the process of project management. The Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) will be examined.Module 3 Blocking and TacklingWe will focus on the fundamental concepts of project management. We will understand how to estimate, plan and monitor and control project work. We will also be exploring the important areas of risk management and change management that are so important to successful project execution

#

DAY ONE10 Class StructureStructureI plan to use a 20-30 video / PowerPoint presentation to introduce topics and explain assignments. This will be used to supplement the written intro which will also be included for every week / module

Module 1 Not heavy volume for the assignments but we do start quickly and we keep marching. So, dont fall behind. Module 1 gives you a chance to get into rhythm and to learn how I grade assignments. Use it as a foundation so you can be efficient going into Modules 2 and 3

Modules 2 and 3 The volume picks up. You might be able to get away with waiting until Saturday morning for Module 1. You will not be able to do the same with 2 and 3.

19

Class Structure Modules, cont.ModuleDescriptionModule 4 Waterfalls, sprints, use cases and stage gates can they all co-exist?This module will provide an overview of the various PM Methodologies. We will learn what makes a methodology a Waterfall approach which was prevalent in early software development. We will also learn about the Rational Unified Process (RUP). We will dive more deeply into the concepts of Agile and several types of Agile development. Finally, we will learn about the methodology used by Department of Health and Human Services and CDC called The Enterprise Performance Lifecycle (EPLC). Module 5 Finishing upWe will finish up our course focusing on three areas Communications Management, Procurement Management and Organizational Change Management. Closing Session Reality is Never PrettyIn our Closing Session, we will have a chance to bring it all together. You will have the opportunity to share what you have learned with your fellow students. We will also hear from a leader in the public health space and tour CDC.

Class Policies - GeneralSTUDENT HONOR AND CONDUCT CODEThe RSPH requires that all material submitted by a student in fulfilling his or her academic course of study must be the original work of the student. For more information about the School's Student Honor and Conduct Code, go to: http://www.sph.emory.edu/studentservice/conductcode.html. If you have any questions about this specific course, contact the instructor.

Feedback & Continuous ImprovementProgram IntegrityChallenging: It should be hardPractical: It should also be useful

DAY ONE20 - Policies / GradingW. Edwards Deming circle Plan, Do, Check, Act (he is why we buy so many Hondas and Toyotas)

Feedback One of the tenets of good project management is continuous improvement. Please provide feedback positive and negative.

Integrity of the programClass should be challengingPMP: Pain in the butt but it is an exam that you simply cannot mail in. So, it means something. My challenge is to challenge folks with a wide range of informatics and PM experience. I am definitely seeking feedback / ideas on accomplishing this more effectively.

Class should also be practicalBe a better PMBe a better team member22

Class Policies GradingGradingEvaluation based on a number of factors that include participation in group discussions and product deliveries from the assignmentsWe want to see that you can apply the concepts, not just understand and regurgitate them

Class Policies Late AssignmentsPolicy is based on The Triple Constraint of Project ManagementThe idea is quite simple: You cannot change one side without affecting at least one other sideWhich side should we adjust if schedule is impacted?

ScheduleCostScope

#

DAY ONEPolicy on late assignmentsSee my notes on project management triangle

The idea is quite simple: You cannot change one side without affecting at least one other side (Cost, Schedule Scope)

Reduced quality is considered a cost in my book

If schedule slips, what are our choices:1) Scope not gonna happen. Would not be fair to others2) Cost is the only other option but who pays?If there is no consequence to late assignments seems like no impact on cost but I disagree. The cost is paid by:- Other students- Integrity of the DegreeInstructor see Scope comment aboveStudent only fair way: The policy is such that points will be deducted for late assignments. However, you can still recover and get a good grade overall. In other words, one late assignment (especially if it is not too late) will not cripple you. However, if you make a habit of turning in late assignments, you will NOT be able to make it up and still get a good grade.

But a good PM will work to minimize the cost

DAY ONE

Like a project. Starts right away. No warmup time for a pm. Really heavy up front and then moves to steady state and finally a smooth close out.Stay on top (or get ahead early). Trying to catch up in the middle is very, very tough.
