Mission and Purpose of the APhA-PAC
PAC = Political Action Committee
• Mission: To support candidates for federal office who have demonstrated support for pharmacy issues and recognize the value of pharmacists in the health care system
• Purpose: To PROMOTE and PROTECTthe pharmacy profession
3
The American Pharmacists Association Political Action Committee (APhA-PAC) was formed in 1985.
Back the PAC Campaign
• What: Competition between APhA-ASP chapters to see who can raise the most funds for the APhA-PAC
• When: January 13th, 2020 – March 13th, 2020
• Why:
• The APhA-PAC is important to APhA-ASP members because its sole purposes is to support and protect our profession
• To raise political awareness through education
• The chapter that raises the most for the APhA-PAC during this campaign will receive a prize
Why YOUR Support Matters
• APhA member participation in PAC giving helps convey the strength of our message and our determination by demonstrating our members’ commitment to the profession and to our goals
• By investing in APhA-PAC, our members enable us to have a louder voice on Capitol Hill and enable us to build more support for our cause
• The future of our profession is reliant upon your specific involvement and advocacy today
• APhA-PAC also partners with other healthcare organizations, especially pharmacy organizations to secure legislators’ attention on issues important to our profession, such as provider status and DIR fee reform
• To achieve our goals, we must not only grow the size of contributions to the PAC but also increase the number of APhA members who support APhA-PAC

APhA-PAC Governance and LegalityThe PAC Board and FEC
• As a federal committee, the APhA-PAC can only contribute to candidates who are running for FEDERAL office
• APhA-PAC is NONPARTISAN and is not affiliated with any political party
• The success of APhA’s legislative priorities is dependent on the strength of the APhA-PAC. That is why it is crucial for all APhA members to support the PAC

of all funds received and disbursedo Penalties for failure to comply
with FEC regulators arepunishable with fines andprison time

Fundraising IdeasSales (continued)
** There are two very important legal restrictions that must be adhered to regarding the sale of any items for PAC fundraising purposes.
1.You may ONLY solicit APhA members• You absolutely cannot solicit anyone who is not an APhA member
2.The items being sold can either be paid for by the individuals as an in-kind contribution OR paid for by the APhA-ASP chapter• Example Items: store bought muffins or lab coats purchased in bulk, or
home-made cupcakes made from eggs, flour, sugar, etc.
• APhA and the APhA-PAC are unable to reimburse you for these purchases
• If you are selling a T-shirt or other, similar merchandise and some of the proceeds from the sale of said item will be used to recoup the cost of its production, you must specify what portion of the amount charged will be considered a PAC contribution, either in a percentage or in a dollar figure
19
Fundraising IdeasSales (continued)
EXAMPLE
Chapter selling a shirt for $15 where the cost of the shirt’s production is $5 and the profit is $10
o “$10 from the sale of the APhA-ASP University of Florida – Gainesville Chapter T-Shirt will benefit the APhA-PAC.”
o “33.33% of the sale of this T-shirt will benefit the APhA-PAC.”
o “Thank you for your support of the APhA-PAC. $10 of your purchase will go to the APhA-PAC.”
• Cash contributions are the easiest way to separate the PAC contribution of an item’s sale from the initial outlay
• If an individual wants to purchase the item using a check, they must write two separate checks, one to APhA-PAC and one to the chapter
