This September marks the beginning of my 12th year at AOSR. It is a real honor for me to continue to collaborate with such an amazing team of educators and staff members as we do our very best to meet our school’s mission: to prepare tomorrow’s global leaders to meet the challenges of a changing world with courage and integrity.

As the school of choice for so many families in Rome, we are extremely proud of our many accomplishments over the years. Here’s to another great year of learning and growing together.

This year we welcome 14 new teachers to AOSR. On the next few pages you can read about these highly qualified educators who are now members of our professional and experienced team of teachers and staff members.

Our PTO president this year is Ms. Stacy Mansager, who begins her second year in the role. Following a very successful year we are excited that she and her team of enthusiastic parent volunteers are back. You may have seen Ms. Mansager and her team on campus throughout the first few weeks of school where they welcomed new families at orientation, sold school supplies and AOSR logo items. They hosted a warm and inviting PTO Welcome Coffee on Tuesday, September 9, with record attendance.

The next event is the PTO Family Picnic on Saturday, September 27 from 11:00-15:00 on the quad.

Throughout the summer we are always busy with our annual campus upgrades. This summer we restructured the technology department. For better efficiency and cost effectiveness the management of our Internet and wifi networks, was outsourced. We bid farewell to our director of technology and alumni coordinator, Mr. Geoff Miller, and thanked him for his years of service to our school. We will continue to reach out to our alumni and invite them to visit the campus or meet up at reunions around the world.

As you walk around campus, you’ll notice quite a number of changes that are in line with our Strategic Plan. Some will be quite evident, while others are not necessarily visible. All help to improve teaching and learning at AOSR and make our campus a safer and more esthetically pleasing environment.

This promises to be a school year filled with learning and new experiences! It has been incredible to observe our students, teachers and families join together in this special school. We are fortunate to have a diverse community whose members are all deeply committed to our mission of preparing tomorrow’s global leaders to meet the challenges of our changing world with courage and integrity. Our desire as educators to see our students succeed academically is coupled with our belief in nurturing children’s social and emotional growth. The process starts at AOSR with our youngest learners (age three) and carries on through to our eldest high school students.

At the elementary level parents can join with us to reach our mission by:• Partnering with your child’s teacher and communicating. Students thrive when parents and teachers are on the same page and working collaboratively!• Spending quality time with your child(ren). We all lead very busy lives. Finding this time can sometimes be difficult. Please try to make this a priority. It can be as simple as setting aside time to ask a few questions about the school day. Be sure to start off by asking a positively phrased question. (For example, “What was the best part of your day and why?” or “Tell me something you learned from your teacher or from a friend today.”) Children tend to share more information when a question is positively phrased and specific. This quality time can also take the form of reading with your child daily. Discuss the books that you read and talk about what you both think is the author’s message or what a character is feeling. There are many different ways to engage children with literature. Making reading fun and not a chore is important. Model the joy of reading. If your child sees you reading for enjoyment or for knowledge, he/she may try to emulate this! • Fostering independence. Depending on the age, parents can support their child the most by letting him/ her figure something out before doing it for them. Encouraging children to take (safe) risks and reassuring them that being “wrong” or doing it incorrectly is not negative. “Failure” is an important part of the learning process. Being comfortable with this builds resilience in students. • Setting routines. Setting routines for children around homework (and bedtime) is critical for developing strong study skills. For most children, structure fosters secure feelings of what to expect in their daily lives. • Living a healthy lifestyle. Get enough sleep, healthy food and exercise. Students who arrive at school having had a healthy breakfast and a good night sleep will be more successful in school. • Leading by example and being a role model for your child. We, as adults, are where children look for guidance and modeling. Young children emulate what they see and hear. We have an obligation to help children know that learning is a life long process and that treating others with kindness and respect is essential.

I look forward to working with new families and returning families. All the best for a wonderful school year!

The new teachers have been meeting the challenges of settling into a new school as they get oriented to both Rome and AOSR. We know you will be impressed with their experience and energy. While new to AOSR, they bring a wealth of experience to their work with our students. Also, we have almost fifty new students who joined us in middle and high school for 2014-15. We welcome all!

Schedules with room and teacher assignments were passed out on the first day of school (and at our Open House on September 18) along with the homework agendas, course expectations for individual classes and supply lists needed for a successful year. The Student and Parent Handbook was distributed on the first day of classes as well. We asked that you read through and keep as a reference as questions arise.

With PowerSchool, students and parents also have access to their schedules, assignment grades, attendance and more. Please contact us if you do not have or have forgotten your user name or password.

As always, please contact us if you have any questions about your student’s educational program and/or any general concerns.

All the best for a great school year.

Dear AOSR Parents,

Welcome to AOSR Secondary School 2014-15! At AOSR we are so fortunate that our students have the benefit of being part of a group that is truly international, representing many countries, many faiths and many cultures. Our students learn from a staff both veteran at AOSR and joining us from schools around the world. In future issues of the Falcon Flyer we will highlight examples of student learning that give a sense of what an AOSR education is all about. We look forward to sharing our pride in our students, our staff and our work with all of you.

ES/MS/HS Music: A native of Richmond, Virginia, Ms. Rhonda AbouHana has been teaching music for 18 years, both in the classroom and through private lessons. She has served as department chair and music director at independent schools in Richmond, Virginia and Baltimore, Maryland. She has directed choral ensembles, taught music theory, music history, and general music at all grade levels, and has served as music director, vocal coach, and conductor for several high school musical theatre productions. Some highlights of her career include taking her choral ensembles on performance tours in Scotland, Greece, and Italy. In addition to classroom teaching, she also teaches private voice lessons. A soprano, Ms. AbouHana has performed in recitals, operas, musical theatre productions, and choral ensembles. She is currently a member of the New Chamber Singers and the choir at St. Paul’s Within the Walls. She has been living in Rome for two years and is very happy to be teaching music to the students at AOSR.

Secondary PE/Health: Mr. Steven Buchholz comes to AOSR via Bend, Oregon, where for the past decade he has taught middle school science, health and physical education. He is a 1994 graduate of Montana State University and has a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Physiology and a minor in education. In addition to teaching, he is a former ski school director and has coached alpine ski racing for just over 20 years. The combination of teaching in both large public and small private schools, coupled with his coaching experience, has allowed him to work with individuals of all ages and diverse backgrounds in a variety of settings. Mr. Buchholz strongly supports AOSR’s goal to “educate the whole child,” and is looking forward to creating a healthy community through exercise and wellness education.

Secondary Resource: Ms. Katherine Derian grew up in an international environment, living in Florida, Michigan, England, The Netherlands, Ireland, Cayman Islands, and Spain throughout her childhood. She attended Michigan State University and received a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in child ecology and attended Salem College, obtaining a master’s in special education. Ms. Derian comes to Rome from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where she was a secondary resource specialist at an IB World School. She has become passionate about the middle and high school population, where advocacy, risk taking, independence, and confidence are key factors in her resource classes. Outside of teaching, Ms. Derian is an avid golfer, a diehard Michigan State Spartans fan, and a pilot. Since she was a transient child, she loved the art of flying from a young age, something about navigating the earth from that perspective stuck in her, and by age 7, she exclaimed to her family that she would become a pilot. She believes that experiencing different cultures is a major priority in life and as an international educator.

ES Librarian: Ms. Michele Farina is thrilled to be a part of the AOSR family as the new ES librarian. She moved here from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and prior to that she spent more than ten years abroad in Okinawa, Japan; Athens, Greece; and Sicily and Naples, Italy. She has studied and taught for extended periods of time in Denmark, Argentina, Brazil, the U.S., Egypt, Jordan, and Italy (having lived previously in Bologna, Siena, and Rome). She loves learning alongside her students: watching them grapple with new ideas, pushing them to ask more probing questions, witnessing them dive 100% into the unknown…and making sure there’s a lot of laughter along the way. She looks forward to her first year at AOSR as she explores, challenges, and embraces a myriad of perspectives, all the while, helping her students to do the same!

ES Art: Ms. Melissa Joseph always wanted to live in Italy. For an art teacher, there is no better place to be! She has a degree in textile/surface design, and worked as an industrial and fashion textile designer in New York for three years before feeling drawn to education. She earned her Bachelor of Arts from New York University and went back to school for art education at the Rhode Island School of Art and Design (RISD), where she earned a master’s degree. She’s been teaching ever since. Most recently she moved from Washington D.C., where she had been teaching for the last five years. Coming to AOSR is a dream come true for her! She has wanted to teach in an international school and to experience living in another country for as long as she can remember. Ms. Schneider loves to challenge herself in new ways from running half-marathons to skydiving to learning how to play tennis. She is thrilled to become part of the AOSR family and excited to work with all of the amazing students in her class!

Jonas Ullman (53), beloved AOSR secondary school science teacher and alumnus (Class of ‘79) passed away suddenly at school on September 10, 2014. Anyone who had the privilege of knowing Mr. Ullman quickly realized that he truly loved his students, whether they grew up at AOSR, as he himself did, or came from around the world as did so many of his students.

Mr. Ullman began his distinguished teaching career at AOSR in 1991. He taught biology (AP and IB) as well as physical science, earth science and life science throughout the course of his career at AOSR. In addition, Mr. Ullman was an adjunct professor of biology and environmental studies at the American University of Rome from 1996-2010. Hundreds filled the Church of San Roberto Bellarmino in Piazza Ungheria on Saturday, September 13, a true sign of the love and respect that so many family members, friends, colleagues, and generations of students had for Mr. Ullman. At the conclusion of a beautiful service, his brother, Patrik Ullman (Class of ‘83), noted that seeing so many students and members of the AOSR community present spoke to the power of his brother’s contribution to our school and our students. Patrik reflected that to honor Mr. Ullman, students should keep learning for their futures and we certainly agree.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Ullman’s family, and to all who called Mr. Ullman their teacher, their colleague or their friend.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees I would like to welcome our students, staff and their families to the 2014-2015 school year. A special welcome to those families and teachers new to the AOSR community.

AOSR has always been known for its active and supportive community never more evident than following the recent tragic loss of our friend, teacher and mentor Jonas Ullman. The entire school came together to grieve and to support one another, a real community in action; together through the good times and the bad.

On behalf of the American Overseas School of Rome and Falcon Sports Council, I would like to welcome you to our school community. It will not take long for you to feel a part of AOSR, I assure you! An easy and rewarding way to accomplish this is to jump right in and get involved! This year’s PTO and Falcon Sports Council members are a very dynamic group and will be a lot of fun to work with.

The PTO designs its activities and events to enhance the educational experience of all our students. We depend on you to volunteer to make these events a success. If you are interested in helping plan special events, working with a particular grade level, helping in the school libraries, selling hotdogs and hamburgers at the Booster Bar, cheering with our Falcon Sports Council, or volunteering with our friendly PTO, we have a group for you and on your own time schedule! Contact us now!

The weeks ahead will be very busy as we get into the flow of the school year. There will be sports games, plays, musical recitals, Friday burgers, grades and homework, but amidst all of this, we can hold onto the memories wehave of a wonderful teacher and the support of a kind and compassionate community.

An effective community like ours needs an engine to drive it. The engine behind the AOSR community is its volunteers. Many give generously of their time to support our school through the PTO, Sports Council, and Board of Trustees. We always need more volunteers especially as we work to raise funds for our new Performing and Fine Arts Center.

AOSR is owned and operated by the parents of students who attend. All parents are eligible to join the AOSR Corporation which will hold its Annual Assembly on Thursday, November 13th. Information is available within the about us section of the school website, www.aosr.org, under Board of Trustees. The Board is elected by the Corporation. It is responsible for establishing school polices, long term strategic planning, approving the annual budget and appoint-ing the head of school. The Head is the executive officer of the school and responsible for implementing its policies. The Board meets monthly during term time. To find out more about the work of the Board, contact me.

Not only is this my third year as the AOSR Athletic Director but it also marks 15 years as an AOSR alum! I spent all four years running cross country, playing basketball and soccer as an AOSR Falcon. Many great memories and life-long friendships were made in the classroom, on the sports fields and on our trips.

We hit the ground running three weeks ago with teams representing us in tennis, cross country and girls and boys volleyball. All teams have their work cut out for them, the bar set high last year with multiple teams finishing at the top of European Championships and our boys volleyball team becoming two time Mediterranean Champions.

Beyond league competition, our student-athletes are applying their athleticism to combat and raise awareness of issues related to global food inequalities. AOSR, spearheaded by our high school athletes, will be taking part in the “Hunger Run,” co-hosted by FAO/IFAD/WFP and Bioveristy International on Sunday, October 19th. For more information or to signup, come by my office in the gym or email me at [email protected].

Looking forward to winter sports, we will be hosting girls/boys basketball, coed cheer and coed wrestling tryouts during the week of Monday, November 10th. Please make sure your student-athlete has an up-to-date sports physical on file with the nurse before tryouts.

On August 25, 2014, Desmond O’Grady, dubbed ‘the great outsider,’ passed away at the age of 78. Mr. O’Grady’s legacy is impressive and consists Photograph courtesy of Mr. Roy Zimmermanof more than 20 collections of his own poems, a dozen collections of translated poetry, and a number of prose memoirs. Throughout his career he met with and traveled in the same circles as Picasso, Jean Paul Sartre, Samuel Beckett, and Allen Ginsberg, to name a few. While in Rome, he collaborated and became close friends with Ezra Pound and also had a brief role in Fellini’s film La Dolce Vita.

Desmond O’Grady taught English for a decade at (A)OSR from the mid 1960’s to mid 1970’s. He shared his passion for life and literature with dozens of students over the years who still remember him as a dynamic, one-of-a-kind teacher.
