“Meeting via Zoom” President’s Report Dear Rotary Friends and Friends of Rotary

I have just come home from a working bee at my church. Rather I should say that two of our gentlemen are replacing our horrid back steps with an amazing step / platform system and I have been the assistant. This has become the highlight of my week - actually being able to make a difference and physically help someone. Last week Samantha gave us a wonderful insight into her passion of working at Reef HG in Townsville. I think everyone who heard her also felt her passion. We look forward to her popping into one of our regular meetings as a Friend of Rotary. Our 2019 - 2020 Board and our 2020 - 2021 Board meet on Tuesday evening to look at where we are going and what we have been able to do given our present social distancing. We will share our outcomes in next week’s Spinifex, so we are all part of this Rotary journey together. For next week’s meeting - 4 June, please do not forget to wear something green, white or red and maybe all three colours. It is Italy’s National Day and our Champions Claudia and Maria will share their home country with us and Maria will also present her power point presentation on her year as an exchange student. I am really looking forward to this night. The Rising Sun Hotel had planned an Italian meal for us but alas that will not happen. Whatever this past week has offered you, I hope that you were able to share it with the people you care about and that you and your families are safe and well. Even though we are socially apart, we, as Rotarians are still making a difference in the lives of so many - the staff and children at WeeCare Residential Service, Simon Eggins and his family to only mention two. Thank you all for supporting these recent projects. Thank you also for being my Rotary family.

Last Week in Review Another fantastic gathering via Zoom with a period of socialising and friendly banter beforehand. Items of note included feedback that Simon was stoked with his new car including news that the new car had done wonders for his mental health, the offer of a new razor for Kevin Strike given his unshaven appearance, a question from Shane Smith about how to safely navigate through an asteroid belt (the background to his Zoom image was out of this world) and suggestion by DG Ron that an on-line trivia night might be something worth pursuing.

It was great to ‘see’ 28 members who linked into the meeting (29 if you count a brief appearance by Jim Baker towards the end of the meeting).

CHAIR Kat opened proceedings at 6.35pm. Jan Johnson recited the Four Way Test.

CHAIR Kat introduced PRESIDENT Sue who: • Extended a warm welcome and thank you to everyone

for linking in. • Thanked Kat and David for organising the meeting.

• Advised she had visited Wee Care and received feedback that they are extremely happy with the assistance provided by Mundingburra Rotary and the RAWCS Flood Relief Program. Fence repairs, new blinds and CCTV are all excellent. President Sue passed on sincere thanks to the entire club from Lyn, thanked Peter and Vince for their work and acknowledged the role played by the RAWCS Flood Relief Program under PDG Robert Tardiani’s stewardship.

• Mentioned a couple of items for which the date of 21 May is significant (Navy Day in Chile and a declaration in 2002 by the United Nations about the significance and importance of Cultural Diversity, Dialogue and Development).

• Reminded members it was important to continue to have fun and remember fellow Rotarians around the world in these difficult and unprecedented times.

CHAIR Kat thanked Sue for her report and then introduced Guest Speaker Samantha (Sam) Kentwell from Reef HQ (also a team member of Kat’s in a local AFL Club).

Sam proved to be a very dynamic and energetic young person with an absolute passion for all things marine but especially molluscs. In her presentation Sam focussed on: • Information about herself: o Grew up on central coast of NSW and moved to

Townsville for Uni o Studied B of Sc in Marine Biology majoring in

aquaculture o Really loves invertebrates (especially molluscs) o 4th year playing AFL o Has a two-year old cat named after Paul Puopolo

(Hawthorn AFL player I think?) o Used to work/volunteer at the central coast marine

discovery centre (Terrigal)

• Making a start at Reef HQ: o Started volunteering in 2017 o Casual education position offered late 2017 o Worked in education department for approx. 2 years o Moved to curatorial position in early 2020

Spinifex Edition “45” for 2019-20 Rotary Club of Mundingburra Inc 28 May 2020

Last Week in Review • Her role at Reef HQ: o Education: Primary task - Present the talks and tours

throughout the Aquarium including: • Discovery Lagoon • Predator live show • Turtle hospital • Feeding tours Secondary task - Present the talks and tours to

private groups including school groups o Curatorial: Current position is Casual Aquarist Main roles:

• Feed fish • Water changes • Ensure fish remain healthy • Exhibit maintenance

• Venomous v Poisonous - Sam explained the difference between the two and went on to show a variety of pictures of shells, fish and sharks to highlight the venomous v poisonous theme.

All in all, a remarkably interesting and informative presentation delivered by a passionate and committed young professional.

President Sue extended a vote of thanks to Sam thanking her for being part of the meeting and presenting so passionately, indicating she would receive (President Sue to deliver) a framed Certificate of Appreciation and $100 would be donated to the Rotary Foundation by Mundingburra Rotary in her name.

Chair Kat invited Graeme Kenna to offer a few words about how he ended up becoming a Rotarian. Graeme’s highlighted the following aspects of his Rotary story: • His first connection to Rotary and Mundingburra Rotary

started 25 years ago while he was employed by the Townsville Council and Mundingburra Rotary was working on the Shoot for Hoops Not Drugs Project (half basketball hoops in several parks).

Spinifex Edition “45” for 2019-20 Rotary Club of Mundingburra Inc 28 May 2020

Last Week in Review • His family has always had an affinity with providing

community service. Graeme’s father was a member of Lions for 35 years as well as being part of Apex and his mother had a voluntary role with Meals on Wheels for many years so ‘community service’ was a concept he grew up with.

• Ten years ago, he developed an association with Ron Degenhart (both working at the Townsville Council) which led to an invitation to formally join Mundingburra Rotary.

• His first project was helping to organise and conduct the annual Charity Golf Day (which he has continued to do each year since). He believes his sporting background helped enormously.

• Through a visit to Guide Dogs Queensland Playroom saw first-hand the difference Mundingburra Rotary’s fund raising through events like the Charity Golf Day make in the community. Children with vision impairment were captivated while playing with equipment only able to be purchased by GDQ because of funds raised through the Charity Golf Day.

• Graeme enjoys the fun, fellowship and fundraising and

indicated he must obviously enjoy it because he is still involved after ten years.

Vicki Degenhart provided an update about the situation with the End Trachoma Project she had undertaken in her capacity as District Goddess. The project has gone very well and the main aspects at present are:

• District 9550 had raised an outstanding amount of

$30,804.80. • Unfortunately, COVID-19 has limited progress with the

project temporarily on-hold but when restrictions ease it will resume.

• There is a new person at the Council who needs time to establish themselves and become familiar with the project.

• Once things resume several facilities will have wash basins etc installed.

• A visit to the area was planned to coincide with a trip to Alice Springs for a conference but cannot proceed due to the current restrictions.

• A fantastic movie/documentary has been made called ‘Homeland Story’ which will be aired via Zoom on three occasions i.e. 7.30pm on 29 May, 5 and 12 June (all Fridays) which Vicki encourages everyone to register for and link in (a fee of $10 is payable with proceeds split between the community and End Trachoma). Last Week in Review International Toast With Norwegian Flag prominently on display in the background Robyn Jones proposed a toast to the Rotary Club of Oslo. In District 2310 the club was formed in 1922 after Rotary began in Norway in 1920.

At CHAIR Kat’s invitation PRESIDENT Sue offered her concluding remarks which included: • Thanking Kat for chairing the meeting. • Thanking members and guests for taking part in this

Zoom meeting. • Announcing Graeme Kenna as the winner of the ‘Zoom

Raffle Draw’. Good luck with the scratchie Graeme! • Updating members about Secretary Jim’s wife Kay who

was unwell. Thanks were offered to Jan and Aloisia for arranging flowers.

• Reminding everyone about YEP Maria planned departure on 4 Jul noting there is a stay option open if circumstances necessitate.

• Congratulating Bill and Wendy Muguira on becoming great grandparent again.

• Mentioning a ‘Thought for the Week’ - something about not thinking too much and taking time to just breath.

Postscript - Secretary Jim linked in late in the meeting and provided an update about Kay. Jim advised Kay is going well despite having suffered a form of stroke (small brain bleed). Kay is expected to be out of hospital today or tomorrow. Jim thanked everyone for their good wishes.

CHAIR Kat thanked everyone for zooming in and closed the meeting at 7.35 pm.

Thank you! Members, for the lovely arrangement they made my day. Kay Baker

What about me - One Picture?

“100 Rotary Quotes”: 1973-74 William C. Carter (law - general practice), Rotary Club of Battersea, London, England. Rotary vision: That it make the present A Time for Action on the experiences of the past. “A Rotary club is autonomous, free to seek its own outlets for service. This is a source of strength. Springing from it is the ability of a club to adapt itself to the local community.” - Address to the 1974 Rotary Convention, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota, USA

“The Object of Rotary” Is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: First: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; Second: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society; Third: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business and community life; Fourth: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace, through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
