    St. Gregory the Great

    Mission Statement

St. Gregory the Great is a Catholic Church made up of people of many different ages, talents, and cultural backgrounds. We are an urban faith community with a small town feel of welcome and hospitality. Motivated by our baptismal calling, we accept our duty to embody the presence of Jesus Christ in the world and to take up the mission he entrusted to us by our word and example.

We glorify God through support and service of our time, talent, and treasure to our church and to the larger community in which we live.

MINISTRY OF THE WEEK --PARISH FINANCE COUNCIL The Parish Finance Council provides support and feedback to the Pastor on issues related to the finances and the maintenance of the physical plant of the parish. Members help prepare the parish operating budget, communicate an annual financial report to the parish, and develop and oversee the budgets and fund raising activities of the parish. Meetings are held on the third Monday of every month at 7p.m. in the Parish Center except December. The contact person for the Parish Finance Council is Mark Soehn, 630-279-4949

APP OF THE WEEK If you have a smart phone, there is an excellent free app to add to your phone called Laudate. It contains daily readings and reflections, information about the Saint of the Day, the Liturgy of the Hours, the Order of the Mass, the Stations of the Cross, the Rosary, a listing of traditional prayers, a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Vatican Documents, the complete New American Bible as well as the Douay-Rheims Bible and much more.

SPECIAL COLLECTION FOR RETIRED PRIESTS OF CHICAGO A special collection will be taken up at all the Masses this weekend for the retired priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago. There are over 200 retired Archdiocesan Priests. Normal retirement age is 70 for Chicago priests. Without these dedicated men, many parishes would not be able to offer the full range of Masses and sacraments that are currently available. There are currently two independent living residences for retired priests that are subsidized by the Archdiocese of Chicago. The priests pension fund was adversely affected by the economic downturn. Millions of dollars will be needed in the coming years to bring it to appropriate funding levels. This collection is solely for the retired priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago. The retired priests of the Archdiocese receive no funds from the Religious Retirement Collection taken up in December. The Archdiocese of Chicago is committed to caring for our retired priests, but we need your assistance and the generosity of every parish community. Thank you in advance for your support of this collection.

KNOW THE MASS, ONE WORD AT A TIME

    Take

In England, you might see a restaurant sign that says “Dine in or take away.” For the British, “take away” is equivalent to our “carry out.” Actually, “take away” may be the more accurate phrase. It implies obtaining something, holding it, and going away to consume it elsewhere. Surprisingly, this same action of “taking away” is deeply embedded in the Sunday Mass we celebrate together, although it’s not an immediately obvious action. If we have fully and actively participated in the Mass, we will take away the Word of God and the Bread of Life that we have received. We will hold onto these sustaining realities within ourselves. We will walk back into our familiar worlds of family, work, and community. And there we will continue to draw from these mysteries and, God willing, share them with others.

Because of his compassion—”He was moved with pity for her”—Jesus returns the son of the widow of Nain to life and gives him back to her.

How has the Eucharist been “the bread of compassion” for me, enabling me to know God’s compassionate love for me and enabling me to bring compassion to my world?

MINISTERS OF CARE If you are homebound or know someone that is, and would like Holy Communion brought to you, please contact the Parish Center at 773-561-3546.

A WALK THROUGH THE MASS—INVITATION TO PRAYER Everything we experience at Mass can be summed up in this invitation to prayer that the people say. The priest presider prays: Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father. All: May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church. ADULT SACRAMENTS INFO- SESSION with Sister Regina If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a member of the Catholic Church or completing his/her initiation sacraments you are invited to meet with Sister Regina to learn more about what is involved in the process. A special Info session will take place on Sunday, June 23, immediately following each of our Sunday morning Masses.

Contact Sister Regina at the Parish Center at #773-561-3546 or e-mail her at [email protected] with any questions or further details.

    ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

In the Gospel we see how Jesus was moved with pity and said to the widow, “Do not cry,” and the people knew that “God had visited his people.” When you hear the

cries of the poor and reach out to help them, deep in their hearts the poor know that “God has visited them.”
