“Theatres are curious places, magician’s trick-boxes where the golden memories of dramatic triumphs linger like nostalgic ghosts, and where the unexplainable, the fantastic, the tragic, the comic and the absurd are routine occurrences on and off the stage. Murders, mayhem, political intrigue, lucrative business, secret assignations . . . and of course, dinner.”BRUSHSTROKES OF A GADFLYE A BUCCHIANERI

Good music, good books, good company and good conversation are leisurely pursuits that bring great happiness. At the opera there are three ways to approach the conversation par t of this evening of leisure:

• Let the chef take the strain and and book your guests into the restaurant in the mansion for a three-course dinner

• Let Fortnum & Mason delight you with a picnic hamper

• Create your own picnic

Our association with Fortnum & Mason is now in its second year and a cause for celebration in itself. William Fortnum came to London to seek his fortune and found employment in the Royal Household where he had responsibility for the daily replenishment of the royal candlesticks. Half-burned candles were his to do as he chose. He sold them and, with the proceeds, expanded into the grocery business.

“It wasn’t until 1707 that it settled down into Fortnum, collected its Mason, and became the sweetest sound in the English language for those countless perceptive thousands who know that life can be sustained by bread and water, but is given a sharp upward boost by more imaginative combinations.” [The Delectable History of Fortnum & Mason 1957]

Bon appetit!
