Here are some of the online suggestions for observing Family Fun Month: order pizza and watch a movie in the backyard, go camping, take a vacation, go out for ice cream, build a backyard fort, take a family bike ride, take a day trip to the zoo, or enjoy a backyard campfire. Are you serious about that last idea? The person responsible for that list obviously is not from the South and has never heard about the dog days of summer. I am thinking sitting under a shade tree on the creek bank, with an ice cold beverage, and my toes in the water might be a better suggestion for family fun. The dogs are welcome to sleep in the shade, or swim in the creek along with the children. In late summer Sirius (the Dog Star) rises and sets with the Sun. The star is so bright the ancient Romans believed it actually gave off heat, accounting for the long stretch of sultry weather and even spawning thunderstorms. At 8.6 light years distance from earth, it has very little to do with additional heat, or our weather patterns. According to Google, it is all about the earth’s tilt. The tilt toward the sun causes its rays to hit at a more direct angle, increasing heat. So much for Google, heat from stars, and a tilted earth, I am putting my phone down, reaching for my beverage, and tilting my chair toward the shade tree. It’s my plan to enjoy the observance of dog days.

WHEN THE YANKEES CAME A CALLIN’Submitted by Martin Everse

Montevallo knew they were coming – a looming apocalypse of 9,000 blue-clad horseman. From the banks of the Tennessee River, Union General James H. Wilson’s army had smashed through the Alabama countryside for a week and by the evening of March 29, 1865 had pitched camp along the Cahaba, 10 miles from Montevallo. The following day thick black clouds of smoke to the north and sporadic gunfire harkened their arrival. Montevallo’s main event in the American Civil War was at hand.

Captain Charles Hinricks of the 10th Missouri Cavalry scribbled in his diary, “The skirmishing in front was at times pretty brisk. The enemy had fortified the road at places with fence rails from behind which they fired. Drove them without trouble out of a little town called Mount Valley [Montevallo] and encamped.” Another Yankee trooper, E. N. Gilpin, wrote, “General Upton, with a detachment and two pieces of artillery, marched rapidly over a rough and broken country toward Montevallo. Eight miles from town our advance encountered the Confederates under General Roddey, fought them into town, and charged them out. Many citizens went with them.”

By 9 p.m. the Union troopers had bedded down for the night around the King House where General Emory Upton established his headquarters. Future Alabama historian Mary Gordon Duffee remembered, “I was in Montevallo when the invading army entered. About sunset rolling drums and prancing horses in a long column approached Montevallo. All night we waited, knowing a battle was imminent.”

That night and the next few days the Union cavalrymen didn’t waste much time sleeping. They were hungry and so were their horses. Margaret Butler, a freedwoman, lost all her corn and flour to the ravenous soldiers. She did protest. “I told them I thought it was pretty hard to take the last bit of corn and flour I had, but they said they were obliged to have it.” Edmund Moss, a slave, recalled losing his food. “They just come by droves and took off the flour, bacon, sugar, coffee, honey and molasses. They toted it off.” At the Perry farm just north of town, “Mounted troopers dashed through the flower gardens decapitating chickens with sabers.”

Not all Yankee soldiers were happy with the conduct of the army. Stephen Shipman, a major with a Wisconsin regiment, wrote on the 30th, “I am tonight disgusted with things in this army. The attachees of Head Quarters are permitted to plunder and pillage entirely too much. I am ashamed of it.” He was impressed with Montevallo, however. “Here are a fine college building, some five churches and some good looking women and contrary to the prevailing fashion were dressed well.”

The morning of March 31st, General Upton sent an Ohio regiment east to destroy the Shelby Iron Works and the 10th Missouri Cavalry southwest to wreck the Bibb Iron Works at Brierfield. As the Missourians returned to town from their foray about noon, the Confederates followed them and attacked. Hinricks related the scene. “We went back to Monte Valley, unsaddled & just as I fixed to take a sweet nap, our pickets 300 strong were driven in. The enemy wasbold & thought we were retreating. The unavoidable boots & saddles were again sounded & 10 minutes afterwards, the noses of the Gents of the Confederacy were again turned towards their dear, dear south. About ½ mile from our picket post we found the first dead Reb. The road was strown with guns & sabers & accoutrements of every description.”

William Gray of the 3rd Iowa was in on the chase. “Well, at 12 o’clock we started for the Rebs. They could not stand our guns that was loaded all the time. Our gun is the Spencer carbine and we load it at the breech with seven balls, then when we want to shoot we throw a lever that throws the ball into the barrel. It is done very quick. This we call ‘pumping thunder at the Rebs’ or so they thought.

An Indiana newspaper summed up the battle. “At Montevallo – Here the enemy, about 1,000 strong, attacked Gen Upton’s advance, and to use an expression, ‘got used up,’ losing about 60 men; Upton lost 11.

The next day the Yankee cavalry regiments were still passing through Montevallo. George Kryder of the 3rd Ohio remarked, “Had reveille at 4 o’clock, marched at daylight 9 miles to Montevallo, a nice town. Went through about 9 o’clock, came to where they had a skirmish. Seen three dead rebs and lots of [dead] horses.” Another Ohioan “saw several dead rebels and horses, fires burning in the woods and some of the dead rebels burnt.”

As the invading army continued on toward Selma, Mary Gordon Duffee, with her friend Emmie Bailey, organized a band of women and children to search for wounded and dying southerners. She did not describe what they found.

The Montevallo Chamber of Commerce named its Citizen of the Year and other award recipients at its annual Community BBQ Picnic on June 27.

“Everything about tonight is positive,” Montevallo resident and emcee Bill Lawson said to a large audience at the University of Montevallo’s Stewart Student Retreat Center. “It’s a special night.”

Montevallo Civitan Club President Billy Tyler presented the Civitan of the Year award to Hilda and Roscoe Hicks, active members of the club since 1997.

Montevallo Boys and Girls Club Board Member Joe Williams presented the Partner of the Year award to University of Montevallo Athletics. UM Assistant Athletic Director Dawn Makofski accepted the award on behalf of the teams.

Makofski presented the University of Montevallo Good Neighbor Award to Jerry Fulmer, a 1969 graduate of UM.

Shelby Emergency Assistance Director Karen Pendleton presented the Volunteer of the Year award to Jim Quakenbush, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran known for his musical talent and frequent playing as a military bugler.

As president of the Montevallo Kiwanis Club, Lawson presented Tim Alexander and Maurice Valentine with a $700

Montevallo Chamber Director Steve Gilbert announced the Business Hall of Fame Class of 2019 inductees: Moore Brothers Automotive (Jim and Obie Moore – Joe Compton accepting), The Flower Shop (Elizabeth Studdard) and Central Industrial Supply (Tim Bragg).

Gilbert presented the Civic Leader of the Year award to the Montevallo Civitan Club, citing the organization’s “impact on the community by striving to make Montevallo a better place to live and work.”

Gilbert presented the Citizen of the Year award to Karen Pendleton, SEA director.

Gilbert said nomination letters poured in for Pendleton, whom he described as a “clear thinker, problem solver, team builder, true mentor and leader.”

Pendleton praised her board of directors, and said she was grateful to have a job she enjoys.

“I appreciate it,” she said, holding her award plaque. “Thank you so much.”

ANNUAL SENIOR BBQ & BINGO

It was that time of the year again for seniors of Montevallo and friends to come out to the Annual BBQ & Bingo. It must have been that familiar smell and we are not speaking of that Aspercream smell. It was BBQ! On Saturday, July 6th at the Grady R. Parker Senior Center in Orr Park at 11:00 a.m attendees arrived to play Bingo and have some good food. As everyone knows the fireworks were spectacular on the 4th but not even that could compare to the world famous baked beans that were on the menu! In preparation for this event everyone had their hearing aids charged in the hope to hear every number called out! Thanks to Montevallo Park and Recreation Board for another successful Annual Senior BBQ & Bingo .

CITY OF MONTEVALLO NEWSMayor’s Message...

Hollie C. Cost, Mayor

MONTEVALLO: BECOMING A MODEL OF SUSTAINABILITY

Positioned in the geographic center of the state, it seems only fitting that Montevallo serves as a model communityin the State of Alabama. When traveling across the state and even across the nation, I speak with pride about our community engagement, our public safety, our volunteer spirit, our willingness to openly communicate about difficult issues, our nationally recognized institutions, our strong base of youth leadership, our walkable design, our commitment to p-16 education, our diverse citizenry, our growing economic base and of course, our extraordinary natural resources. Our little unconventional oasis has all of the key elements of an ideal community, and we are being recognized for this. Over the last several years we’ve been selected as a Main Street Community, invited to a national politics exchange, presented with the Civvy Award, recognized as a model for walkability and cited as one of the safest communities in the state. It is important to me to share these accolades as reminders to us all to cherish what we have. We truly are special.

In that light, I have more news to share. Recently, Montevallo was featured at a national conference on walkability (thanks to Jermaine Mitchell, presenter extraordinaire), invited to become an age-friendly community and I was selected to serve on the Regional Planning Commission and Alabama Environmental Council (AEC). All of these recognitions are a testament to who

we are as a community and in particular to our commitment to sustainability. Sustainability focuses on human, social, economic and environmental commitments and this is where Montevallo truly shines. Aligning with this, AEC has as their focus: preserve and protect Alabama’s natural capital, unify information and action for healthier people and places and promote economic growth through green business. While there are many different definitions of sustainability, I particularly appreciate that of the Bruntland Commission “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of the future to meet theirs.” But it is the words of Patricia Beaumont that resonate with me the most and appear to truly reflect the spirit of Montevallo “sustainability is the act of not being a glutton of the earth…revere, care for and respect the earth as you would your children and your elders. Those who respect have the traits of conservation, goodness, giving, self-control and honesty.”

In order to appreciate Montevallo’s commitment to sustainability, all we need to do is glance around town and reflect on a some of our key initiatives. We have award-winning parks and trails, a model recycling facility, prioritize historic preservation, strategically plan our growth and development, seek out businesses that embrace our priorities, tout the first citywide bike share in the state and are hosting community forums to not just fix our broken recycling system but develop a way to reduce the overall waste we produce as a community. So, this is just a short “Thank you” to all of you out there who make Montevallo the special place that it is by focusing on sustainability. I thank you. Your children thank you and their grandchildren will thank you later. I feel incredibly fortunate to serve as the mayor of a community with such a strong commitment to future generations.

“MOONLIGHT AND MAGNOLIAS” by Ron Hutchison Presented by special arrangement with Dramatist Play Services, Inc. Serious warning for peanut allergies!

Show Dates: Aug 22nd, Aug 23rd, Aug 24th @ 7:30pm, and Aug 25th @ 2pm

This show is a hilarious telling of how the beloved movie “Gone with The Wind” was rewritten in the middle of filming in just five days. Just in time for the 80th anniversary.

“1939 Hollywood is abuzz. Legendary producer David O. Selznick has shut down production of his hew epic, “Gone with The Wind”, a film adaptation of Margaret Mitchell’s novel. The screenplay you see just doesn’t work. While fending off the film’s stars, gossip columnists and his own father-in-law Selznick sends a car for famed screenwriter Ben Hecht and pulls formidable director Victor Fleming from the set of “The Wizard of Oz”. Summoning both to his office he locks the doors, closes the shades and on a diet of bananas and peanuts, the three men labor over five days to fashion a screenplay that will become the blueprint for one of the most successful and beloved films of all times.”

MONTEVALLO NAMED 2018 TREE CITY USAfrom Alabama Newscenter Website

Montevallo was named a 2018 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation for the city’s commitment to effective urban forest management.

Montevallo met the program’s four requirements of having a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance or proclamation.

Tree City USA has been around since 1976, providing a framework for cities to keep their communities green and full of trees.

“Tree City USA communities see the impact an urban forest has in a community firsthand,” said Dan Lambe, president of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Additionally, recognition brings residents together and creates a sense of community pride, whether it’s through volunteer engagement or public education.”

Montevallo also has Orr Park, a preserve along Shoal Creek known for tree carvings by local artist Tim Tingle.

According to the Arbor Day Foundation website, more than 3,400 communities have committed to becoming a Tree City USA. Several cities in Alabama have made the commitment, including Auburn, Birmingham, Mobile, Montgomery and Tuscaloosa. The total population of Tree City USA communities nationwide is about 145 million.

Trees serve a great purpose, increasing property values and wildlife habitat, while reducing home cooling costs and air pollution, said Montevallo Mayor Hollie Cost.

“Our natural world is at the very core of our existence. In Montevallo, we are a proud tribe of tree-huggers,” Cost said. “Being named a Tree City USA is a distinct honor, which we wholeheartedly embrace, appreciate and celebrate.”

UM NAMED TO PRESTIGIOUS NATIONALCOLLEGES OF DISTINCTION LIST(Shelby County Reporter)

For the eighth consecutive year, the University of Montevallo has been named to the prestigious national Colleges of Distinction list, remaining one of only two public higher education institutions in the state to achieve the honor.

In addition to again earning the overall Colleges of Distinction designation, UM also achieved program-specific recognition for the Stephens College of Business and the College of Education & Human Development, and was praised for its efforts to prepare students for their careers after graduation.

The University of Montevallo has earned the Colleges of Distinction designation for the eighth consecutive year.

“The University of Montevallo is delighted and honored to receive this tremendous, continued recognition as a College of Distinction, and for program-specific recognition of the Stephens College of Business and the College of Education & Human Development,” said UM Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Mary Beth Armstrong. “Since this organization recognizes colleges that are the best places to learn, to grow and to succeed, what they are really recognizing are colleges that put student learning above all else. For us, it is a recognition of the outstanding job our faculty members are doing engaging students in the learning environment.”

Colleges of Distinction Chief Operating Officer Tyson Schritter praised UM for offering an innovative, student-focused curriculum, and for achieving measurable success across multiple criteria.

“We are so proud to see the University of Montevallo walking the walk,” said Tyson Schritter, chief operating officer for Colleges of Distinction. “Colleges of Distinction knows that a truly valuable education can’t be measured by rank or reputation. Students learn and thrive best when they embrace hands-on learning in a vibrant, welcoming community. That’s why it’s so encouraging to find the University of Montevallo take such an innovative approach with its curriculum: its high-impact educational practices ensure that the undergraduate experience is worthwhile and unique.”

Colleges of Distinction’s selection process consists of detailed interviews and research for each institution’s freshman experience and retention efforts alongside its general education programs, career development, strategic plan, student satisfaction and more. Schools are accepted on the basis that they adhere to the four distinctions: engaged students, great teaching, vibrant community and successful outcomes.

“Student success is a given at the University of Montevallo,” Schritter added. “All of its programs are backed with broad perspectives across the liberal arts. Every student is pushed to be inquisitive and active. And with such extensive experiential learning opportunities, it’s no wonder why the University of Montevallo’s graduates feel expertly prepared by their professional education.”

THE LITTLE FREE PANTRY AT OAK & PLOWMAN

“Take what you need, leave what you can.” That simple thought is the idea behind the Little Free Pantry in front of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church (at the corner of Oak and Plowman streets, across from Montevallo High School). The Pantry, which looks like a miniature church, is mounted on a post. Its red doors are always unlocked, so you can take or supply food at any time day or night.

Little Free Pantries have been springing up across the country as part of a grassroots movement that seeks to address hunger and food insecurity. The LFP movement describes itself as neighbors helping neighbors, offering a community solution to an immediate and local need.

If you want to help stock the pantry, bring non-perishable food items (canned goods, dried milk, cereal, crackers, boxed pasta, and so on). If you need food, help yourself. And while you are there, check out the Little Free Library beside it. Both are sponsored by St. Andrew’s.

Want to put up your own Little Free Pantry? Go to www.littlefreepantry.org to learn how.

JOIN US FOR NEW STUDENT MOVE-IN DAY!FRIDAY, AUGUST 23RD, 8 AM – 12 NOON

It’s almost time once again to welcome new students and their families to our Montevallo community. As you know, moving away to college is an exciting and at times overwhelming milestone in the lives of our students and their loved ones. Part of the UM tradition is for our faculty, staff, alumni and community to join together to help make this less overwhelming by assisting our new students to move into the residence halls. The students and their families truly appreciate the extra help. We hope that you will join us in offering a warm Montevallo welcome to the students moving into our community.

New students will be moving in Friday, August 23rd from 8 am until noon. Two shifts (7:45 am — 10:00 am or 9:45 am — 12 noon) have been designated. However, whatever amount of time you can donate to this important campus event would be appreciated.

There are many ways you can assist us in extending a hearty welcome. In addition to helping students carry belongings to their rooms we need people to hand out water, hold doors and answer general questions among other tasks. There is something for everyone! Please come by the Housing and Residence Life Office (Main Hall 1st floor west wing) prior to your shift to receive your complimentary t-shirt. Your UM Move-in 2019 t-shirt is a small token of our thanks for your help and will signify to the students and their parents that you are a part of the official move-in process.

Plan now to take just a couple of hours to help on this very important day and to join in the enjoyment of meeting the newest members of the UM family. Please call the Housing & Residence Life Office at 665- 6235 or email [email protected] to sign up. A reply by August 21st would be appreciated.

BICYCLE BENEFITS

Cycling has all sorts of benefits outside of increasing your physical strength and looking really cool. Here are some other major benefits that you may not have known.

Emotional Benefits – According to Bicycling Magazine, a recent study analyzing 26 years of research found that as little as 20-30 minutes of exercise per day can help prevent depression. A good ride can have emotional benefits including feeling better, relieve anxiety, and increase stress resistance. Decreasing Stress - A 2013 study by Ida and colleagues published in BioPsychoSocial Medicine found that after 15 minutes of pedaling a stationary bike participants levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, declined significantly.

Memory and Reasoning – The Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research published a study in 2013 by Nanda and colleagues which found that participants scored higher on memory, reasoning, and planning tests after 30 minutes of moderately intense spinning on a stationary bike than before they rode.

Aging Benefits – Chapman and Associates published an article in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience in 2013 that took participants ages 57-75 through a physical training program that included using an exercise bike three times per week.

They found that benefits begin to show before the 6-month mark in maintaining adequate blood flow to the brain. They conclude starting aerobic exercise sooner is better since the slope of decline in brain health becomes steeper from age 50 onward.

Get Outside – In a 2014 study published in Frontiers in Psychology, Pearson and Craig found that spending time in nature can reduce stress and decrease symptoms of depression and anxiety. Cycling in the great outdoors and in natural surroundings will increase these benefits. In fact, there is also evidence that exercising outside will increase enjoyment of and motivation to maintain an exercise program. Prescription for Happiness – Bicycling Magazine recommends the following based on a recent review study on exercise and depression: 3 - 5 (45 - 60 minute) sessions per week, keeping your target heart rate between 50 - 85% of your maximum.

You don’t have to take these researchers’ words for it. Grab a bike and go for a ride to discover your own benefits to riding! ValloCycle is committed to creating and supporting a biking community in Montevallo. ValloCycle is Alabama’s oldest citywide bike share.
