“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’ ”

- Martin Luther

It was another busy year for Bethel as we worked to provide progressive services for our seniors while also preparing to address this population’s future needs. Factors such as improved medical technolo-gies, longer life expectancy, shifting demographics, socio-economic trends and nationwide healthcare reform continue to result in new philosophies and protocols on how best to help our aging population.

With this in mind, we undertook several external efforts including successful partnerships with area -hospitals to reduce 30 day hospital readmissions, a statewide and national initiative. Through the over-sight of our Medical Director, Dr. Edward Merker, along with Phelps Hospital Northwell Health and New York Presbyterian-Hudson Valley Hospital Center staff, we reduced our 30 day readmission rate to 2.4% in 2015.

In addition, as a member of the NYS $8 billion Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment Program, Bethel is working with hospitals and service agencies to support and initiate change to more efficiently provide healthcare throughout the Hudson Valley region. We also began implementing an Electronic Health Record system among our community physi-cians, pharmacy and healthcare providers to more effectively access resident health information.

Internally, we welcomed Michael Dobbins as the new administrator of Bethel Nursing Home in Ossining... We sponsored the showing of “Alive Inside” a movie about Alzheimer’s disease as part of the Ossining Library’s Documentary Series…Our Home Care offices moved from the Ossining to Croton campus... We held our first-ever Un-gala event, inviting peo-ple to “not attend” Bethel’s annual fundraiser... and so much more.

All of these efforts, diverse in size and scope, have one singular purpose, to help us provide the best possible care to our residents. For over 100 years, Bethel has looked at the big picture, anticipating the changing landscape and having a fresh palette ready to paint a new scene with bold, colorful strokes. We continue to create these settings where seniors can be assured peace of mind and hope for the future in knowing Bethel will always be here for them.

Beth Goldstein, CEO

As one of the few remaining not-for-profit senior healthcare and housing organizations in Westchester County, we can be proud of our longevity and ability to care for seniors in an ever-changing world.

Whatever the daily headlines have -heralded over the last 100 years, be it the stock market crash of 1929, the first man to walk on the moon, taking down the Berlin Wall or the creation of a global culture dependent upon

cell phones, the internet and social media, we have been there for our residents, providing care and security, despite the changing world around us.

Today, as seniors live longer, we are finding ways to prolong their inde-pendence to ensure they continue to have a good and happy life. Through Bethel’s community services, afforda-ble housing options and, when need-ed, person-centered care in our -nursing and rehabilitation centers, we

are meeting these chang-ing needs. Bethel’s ability to determine the future concerns of our aging population has allowed us to remain a viable and integral resource for seniors and we look forward to providing continued innovative care and services as we move further into the 21st century.

“Attendees” Stay Home to Benefit Bethel! Chinese take-out and a favorite flick was just one way to support Bethel’s first-ever Un-Gala event last fall! Instead of up-do’s and gowns, it was all about couches and comfort. No need for black ties or spit-shine shoes. Baseball caps and t-shirts were the way to go.

It was all about having an extra Saturday night to do whatever one chose, be it a movie, going out to dinner or seeing friends.

And, although casual in approach, donors were still fastidious in their response. All proceeds were used to enhance Bethel’s resident-centered programs and services. We thank our donors for their continued generosity!

In the meantime, stay tuned for information on the 2016 gala. Hint: Although one may see cleats and pennants, it is not a sports venue….there will be pulpits, but no preachers...there will be dolphins, but not the kind one swims with...let’s just say, -attendees will knot be disappointed….

Bethel’s IT Director, Mr. Jeff Scott, was recognized by -Assemblywoman Sandra Galef and Mr. Daniel J. Heim, Vice-President of Leading Age NY, upon being named Employee of Distinction in a state-wide campaign, during a reception in his honor at Bethel.

Mr. Scott received this -accolade from Leading Age NY, which represents 600 not-for-profit, mission driven and public continuing care -providers.

Bethel’s CEO, Ms. Beth -Goldstein said that Mr. Scott was deserving of the award and that he “is an employee

with a big heart.” She explained that he often uses his own time, including weekends, to help the residents’ vegetable garden flourish, organize intramural Wii bowling tournaments between -campuses and assist with other events such as Super Bowl -parties and barbecues.

Mr. Scott thanked the -dignitaries, as well as Bethel leadership, and also singled out resident, Mr. Albert Ferrara, 91, with whom he has managed the resident garden for the last ten years, for his camaraderie and friendship.

A Little Help Can Go a Long Way!

Bethel’s Home Care program, comprised of the Certified Home Health Agency (CHHA) and the Licensed Home Care Services Agency (LHCSA) continues to provide care to seniors in their homes. For over 30 years, Bethel’s home care services have been helping seniors to remain inde-pendent in their homes and communities.

Providing medical assistance, personal care and light housekeeping tasks can offer just the right amount of support to help seniors main-tain their independent, day to day routines. Whether it’s wound care, physical therapy, help with showering or light housekeeping, Bethel’s Home Care program is helping seniors live at home.

Bethel’s CHHA and LHCSA work together to provide a combination of comprehensive short and long-term, clinical and non-clinical services. Although based in Westchester, Bethel’s CHHA can also provide ser-vices in Putnam, Bronx. Manhattan and Queens.

Adult Day Services—Supporting Community Seniors & Their Caregivers

Bethel’s Adult Day Medical and Social Program continues to offer an engag-ing setting for seniors, as well as res-pite for their families.

Seniors in the medical model receive clinical and personal care, in addition to socialization, meals and events.

Participants in the social model also have an opportunity to engage, share meals and enjoy special programs and events.

Door-to-door transportation is availa-ble for both programs.

Meanwhile, caregivers have an -opportunity to manage their day to day tasks and routines with peace of mind knowing that their family -members are safe, happy and enjoy-ing the company of other seniors.

And it was a busy year for our seniors! Outings and events included fruit -orchard trips, walks along the Hudson River, shopping excursions and dining at area restaurants. Onsite events included carnivals, luaus, Cinqo de Mayo celebrations, and barbecues, among other such activities.

“We rise by lifting others.” - Robert Ingersoll

Bethel Nursing Home

Back in the day it was a sturdy farmhouse where a small group of elderly people lived as an ex-tended family, receiving care, in

a congregate setting.

It was a bucolic life in the early 1900’s as residents ambled the grounds enjoying the natural -setting of Pines and hills where gardens were planted and farm animals roamed.

As a working farm, vegetables, fruits and fresh milk, from an obliging cow, made it to their kitchen table each day.

Today, despite newer buildings and a larger campus, the inti-

mate, close-knit sense of commu-nity that first began in the farm-house has remained. For seniors seeking a 21st century healthcare experience with an old-fashioned, family style approach, Bethel Nursing Home is a great choice!
