Hostel seniors of the college help agrand fresher’s day for the new stu-dents who have joined the hostel. Itstarted in the evening at around 5:30PM. The dress code for the fresher’sin first year was white shirt andshorts, and the second and third yearstudents could wear anything oftheir choice. The celebrations startedwith munching on delicious snacks.The party got on the roll after anhour, when it was graced by the pres-ence of the college principal Dr.Rama, the hostel warden, the deputy

The results for this edition of theInnovation Project Scheme wererecently declared by the varsity. Thevision of University of Delhi statesthat the desired goal must have somereasonably clear real worldapplications, to promote innovationamong young minds by introducingthe ‘Innovation Project Scheme’ in2012 has been successful in grab-bing the attention and interests ofthe students and faculty . Thescheme is ‘designed to enhancelearning experience through stu-dent’s participation. It inspires over300 projects which then submittedby students and faculty of collegesaround the university. They were tobe conducted by team of 3 teachersand 10 students, being able to en-courage and support hands-onresearch by college teachers andstudents. Given a curriculum which wasbounded by a discipline basedsyllabus and strict timetables forlectures, the teachers and studentsdid not have the time, or the grants,to consider new ways of learning.The Innovation Project Scheme hasproved to be an inevitable part of theUniversity since 2012 providing abig platform to students to showcasetheir talents with monetary grants,an exposure like never before.A project submitted by the faculty

National Cadet Cops : Uttrakhand Track 2015

The trip consisted of fourseemingly arduous tracks and adven-turous visits to several sites.Dehradun was the site of base camp.The tracks: Bizapur to Gajuari 14.2kms. up & down by foot, Dehradunto Santaldevi Temple 15.7 kms. upand down by foot, Dehradun toMaldevta 21 kms. with bus and 7.1kms. by foot, Dehradun to Mus-soorie to Hathipaon to Vinor Hill toCloud ends 34 kms. with bus and12.4 kms. with foot up and down.Following were the sites visited: In-

dian Military Academy (IMA), For-est Research Institute (FRI), KumaoBN (Army Battalion), Rastriya In-dian Military College (RIMC),C.M. Heritage, T.A. (Eco force) whohelps in plantation, Bhadarkali Riverand artillery visits. The students had a great time notonly learning but also having a lot offun along the way. This trip was asuccess in terms of what knowledgeand experience it wanted to providethe students with, as the students feltmore confident and knowledgeablewhen they returned. For some ofthem, it was the most adventuroustrip they have ever went on.

Uttrakhand Track 2015 was organ-ized by 29 UK BN from September14 to September 30 for Cadets fromall over India. Delhi is one of the 17N.C.C. Directorates in India, andHansraj College, along with severalother colleges of Delhi University,comes under the Delhi Directorate.Many students from NCC ofHansraj College, Satyawati College,Shyam Lal College and S.G.N.D.Khalsa College availed theopportunity of being a part of thistrip. A total of 7 officers were se-lected from Hansraj NCC: SUO-Digvijay Singh, JUO’s-Ravikant,Vikram Singh, Vivek Tomar and

NSS Hansraj organised a Saree andPaper Collection Drive in collabora-tion with the NGO Goonj on 7thOctober' 2015. This charitable eventattempted to collect donations fromacross the college in order to aid thepoor sections with them, targetingwomen primarily. The teachers aswell as the students donatedrecyclable papers and sarees thatwere in good condition, in largenumbers.

Later, on the same day, there was aChuppi Todo Baithak where peoplefrom 'Not Just A Piece of Cloth(NJPC)' by Goonj came to spreadawareness on menstruation and tobreak the taboos surrounding it. They told us about how women useash, gunny bags, rags, etc. for menses.A lot of students initially unwillingto talk about it, took to the forefrontby the end of the seminar. It was anenriching experience for all.

n 15th October 2015 for the firsttime in the history of HansrajCollege an event i.e. White cane safetyday held which was organized byEqual Opportunity Cell with the jointeffort of Enabling Unit & So-ciety of General Awareness, wherethey promoted for a safeenvironment for the blind studentsand people to walk safely on roads andto make people aware to help and sup-port the visually challenged people intheir daily life. For conductingthis event they organized a peace rallywhere 200(approx.) students par-ticipated and marched throughout thecollege as well as to the road connect-ing kamla Nagar and Malkaganj toHansraj college where joined studentsmade voice to reach to the peopleabout the awareness of helping visuallychallenged people to cross the road.All the members of both societiesjoined this movement and made thepeople to know about this noble cause.

Enabling Unit convener Dr. RajeshSharma along with co-conveners Ms.Parul Pant, Dr. Chetna Gupta, and Dr.Vandana Singh has initiated theMarch with their valuable token ofwords of wisdom about this day. Theyinformed the students that this daywas celebrated after the joint resolu-tion made by the United Nations since1964. In 2011 this day was also namedas Blind Americans Equality Day byPresident Barrack Obama. Apart from the peace rally many funevents were organized.

participated in this event and shequoted that “Helping visually chal-lenged students will make studentsto realize yourself a Good humanbeing and a responsible citizen to thecountry.” Even Dr. Satendra SrivastavaFaculty of Philosophy DepartmentHansraj College has also participatedin the event and blessed us with hispositive attitude to the event. Studentsare very keen to organize this eventevery year with full enthusiasm andcommitment.

The Social Night: Hansraj meets MirandaHansraj hostel annually celebrates a social night with the hostel studentsof Miranda House. The night is celebrated with various events andcompetitions which help the students get to know each other better forfurthering a socially more advanced experienced of being in the northcampus of Delhi University. This year, it was celebrated on October 4, 2015.Around 80 students from the hostel participated enthusiastically. Thefunction began with introducing the newcomers. Then, the entire groupwas separated into pairs of one boy and one girl by randomly picking chitsout of a bowl. Several fun events like dialogue performance, paper dance,couple dance, etc. followed, and the students had immense fun throughoutthe function. Sandeep from B.Sc. Physical Sciences first year won the titleof the best couple along with his partner Aena. It was certainly amemorable night in campus for the students.

Diwali Mela and the Little HansariansOn 16th October 2015, NSSHans Raj organized its annualDiwali Mela. It was a grandaffair with various competi-tions and food stalls. Beautifulhandmade articles such aswall hangings, diyas, penstands and bookmarks made

by the volunteers were sold. For thehandmade dairies, student contacted alady who made and also sold them.The highlight of the Mela was the“golgappa eating competition”. It at-tracted a lot of attention of studentsthat they rushed to participate. Theperson who ate the maximum golgap-pas in 30 sec won a prize. ‘Dedicate asong’ stall and ‘Dare to Propose’ excited

the students even further. In LiveMusic Students could request a songthat they wanted to be played and inDare to purpose, a student was sup-posed to propose a random strangerwith a rose.Some seniors have a startup calledcake-o-frost. So they sold their cupcakes to students and everybody lovedthem. A lot of girls were seen getting

their hair braided into variouscolours. Delicious Bhelpuri fromthe Bhelpuri stall was also verytempting for all. Students playedmultiple rounds of the 'LuckySeven' game. The game of lucky 7was set up where in people had tobet over a number lower or higher

than 7 or 7 itself. The Mela’s proceeds would be utilizedfor the Padhaku kids. Their own cre-ative stall had put up all the craft ma-terial made by the volunteers and theteam. The proceeds of the same will beutilised for fulfilling the needs of Pad-haku kids. The event was successful inspreading smiles and giving the stu-dents a day off from studies.

Prof. Rajen-dra Kumar Saxena is teaching atUniversity of Delhi for the last 40years. He established the Departmentof Microbiology at South Campus andheaded it for more than 13 years, hehas been the Dean, Faculty of Inter-

disciplinary and Applied Sciences for3 years. The topic of the lecture was “BACTERIAL CELLULOSE: A GOLDENBIOPOLYMER WITH IMMENSEINDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS”.Importance of bacterial cellulose in

various industrial sectors along withthe production, scale-up, purificationand characterization were discussed.The program commenced by lightingof the lamp and a recitation ofSaraswati Vandana. The president thenwelcomed the audience with herspeech. Thereafter, Prof. Saxena had ashort interactive session with thestudents. A small token of appreciationwas then given to the honorablespeaker. Dr. Himanshu, the convenerof the Life Science Society concludedthe session and delivered the vote ofthanks.

A Seminar on Career Counseling, ORDINATEUROrdinateur, the Computer Sciencesociety of Hans Raj College, organ-ized a career counseling session onOctober 1, 2015 in Room NR-2,with the invited speakerDr. Ritukar Chaddha,M.Sc. in Mathematics,and Ph.D. in Fuzzy Logic.He has worked as aVisiting Faculty in a col-lege affiliated to GGSIPfor B.C.A/M.C.A andB.Tech classes. He haswritten a number ofbooks and is presentlyworking as the Director ofLandmark Institute. He isalso the founder and CEO of a newIT company “MeriPadhai.com”. Hecontinues to evolve as an education-ist to serve the nation.The seminar begun with a welcomeaddress given by Mr. Adib. Hewelcomed the guest speaker and

introduced the guest to the students.Mr. Adib, then, requested the guestto address the students andenlighten them with his proficient

advices with regards to the possiblecareer options for the students. Dr.Chaddha began his talk by enquiringthe students about their interest inMathematics and Logic. Henarrated a significant part of thestory of his becoming a reputed

professional to the students. Then, hespoke about the various topics inComputer Science. He focused onM.C.A. entrance tests and their syl-

labi. He also mentioned thetop colleges which offerM.C.A. in India. He alsoinspired students to pursuetheir goals & interests andguided them about the cor-porate world. He ended his talk by quot-ing a story of one of hisown students, who has be-come very successful. Afterthe guest’s talk, Mrs.Harmeet Kaur, H.O.D,

Amidst the urgent need and grow-ing demands for websites, and theswiftly growing field of ComputerScience, ORDINATEUR, theComputer Science Society of Han-sraj College conducted a 4-dayworkshop on Web Devel-opment in room NR-2.About 60 second and thirdyear students from theComputer ScienceDepartment joined quiteenthusiastically, along with10 volunteers assistingthem. Volunteers fromsecond year, Paras Jain,Ashita Diwan, MridulaGarg, Swapnil Ojha, and from thirdyear, Shobhit Aggarwal, VishalPandey, Purnima Yadav, Jatin Ag-garwal, Sherab, Prateek of the C.S.department came forward to helpthe students with organzing theworkshop. Students who wished toshare their considerable knowledgeabout Web Development spoke onvarious topics like HTML, CSS,JavaScript, PHP and MySQL underthe guidance of teachers. The impor-tant and basic topics were coveredquite efficiently as stated by the

attendees. On September 23, thefirst day of the event, ShobhitAggarwal, Purnima Yadav andVishal Pandey of third year C.S. de-partment spoke on relevant topics ofHTML. On the second day,

Purnima Yadavand Jatin Aggar-wal taught thestudents certainaspects of CSS.On the third dayof the event,September 28,Swapnil Ojha andParas Jainexplained basic

topics related to JavaScript. Theworkshop culminated with PHP andMySQL being taught to students onthe final day by Shobhit Aggarwal,Vishal Pandey and Prateek of thirdyear C.S. department.Assignments were given to studentsat the end of every day’s session forthe purpose of practicing. Learningwas the primary incentive of thisworkshop, and its successful organi-zation enabled the students to learnmany new and important thingsabout Web Development.

ORDINATEUR organized WEBDEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP

The Lumen Society, Department ofPhysics and Electronics held itsinauguration on October 08, 2015.The society had invited the reputedDr. V.K. Jain, Head of Amity Insti-tute of Advanced Research andStudies (AIARS), Amity University,Uttar Pradesh, who the Principalherself felicitated by presenting tohim a Tulsi plant. He gave an intro-ductory talk on microchips andNanotechnology. He discussedvarious ways of developingmicrochips and claimed its variousapplications. He ended the talk byconcluding that Nanotechnology

will give many revolutionary appli-cations in coming future. Another talk was presented by Dr.Ashok Kumar who is a professor inPhysics and Astrophysics depart-ment of DU, specialised on Detec-tors to detect very small and highenergy particles. He explainedworking of detectors . The talk com-pleted with vote of thanks from so-ciety. The event was an inspiring onefor the students, and gave them asense of an optimistic start. The newmembers look forward to an enrich-ing and productive year.

Lumen Society Kicks Off

The Zoology department organizeda workshop on “Bioinformatics: Ho-mology Modelling of Protein Struc-tures and Protein-Ligand Docking”on September 28, 2015 under theaegis of D.B.T. Star College pro-gram. A lecture on the modern useof computer tools to structurally de-fine proteins, probably the mostimportant of all biologicalcompounds was delivered to much ofinterest of the students by Dr. D.Mohanty of National Institute ofImmunology, a pioneer in the fieldof bioinformatics.The workshop wasaimed at providing hands-on expe-riences on using computer softwares

to identify the structures of proteins,and understand the docking of pro-teins and its respective ligands to thestudents of departments of Botanyand Zoology. With increase in thenumber of physiological disordersthat have either mutated protein(s)or misfolded protein(s), the work-shop was also aimed at inculcating instudents the scientific temper to geta directional approach in under-standing the disorders right. With30 students from both the depart-ments participating in the workshop,the teachers and students of theZoology department did a great jobin pulling off a successful event.

Physics and Electronics Department Visit NPL and NSC

The Physics and Electronics Depart-ment of Hans Raj College visited theNational Physical Laboratory and theNational Science Center on its openday which was celebrated onSeptember 30, 2015. NationalPhysical Laboratory is the NationalMetrology Institute of India and apremier research laboratory in the fieldof Physical Sciences. All the physicalparameters and standards areexamined and analyzed by NPL. TheSI system in India was established byNPL in 1958. NPL is working in var-ious experimental field of Physics.Covering research from material

science to space science, all the instru-ments are designed. This is one of thebest place in India for students to getthe flavor of new and interestingresearches. As per the NPL rules,Hans Raj College decided to take 30students (23 majoring in Physics; 7majoring in Electronics) and 6 teach-ers on 'first come, first serve' basis. Thedepartment visits NPL every year.Third year students are allowed to oc-cupy the seats. The departmentarranged a bus to the laboratory, andreached it at 10:00 AM. Students wereguided by reputed researchers. Manyinformative posters were on display,

which the researchers helped the stu-dents understand well. The studentswere enthralled to see the Radio andAstronomy Science Division of thelaboratory, which analyzes theionosphere and Earth protection fromspace. After spending about threehours in NPL, the department visitedthe National Science Centre (alsoknown as National Science Museum).They engaged themselves with themany science based exercises thatNSC had to offer them, and a lot ofposters that were on display there. Asper students' remarks, the visit wasquite an enriching experience.

I was eager to visit NPL since two yearsas it has very sophisticated instruments. A great deal of research is always going on there. NPL is serving Indiasince the last 6 decades. I was fortunate to visit it. I might not have learnt a lot that I can directly make use of,but seeing the people enrolled there and their devotion towards science certainly inspired me. Theprogram was to guide the students for internships, jobs and interviews andalso to find out the unique quality in themselves which make themdifferent and better than others and to convert themselves into a brand.The art of managing and basic employment skills were well framed by the chief speaker Mr.kamal Seth, founder ofhuman circle organization. Ithink, I ponder, I dream and draw theconclusion that Hansraj College has asoul and is not just a building made ofbricks and mortar.Established on 26th July 1948, a con-stituent college of University of Delhi,our college has been contributing to thedevelopment of emotionally balancedintellectuals with above board moralvalues, who are concerned about the so-cial problems and are up-to-date withthe very latest developments in technol-ogy and drift in the culture. The College has been providing a liberaland nurturing atmosphere for academicgrowth over almost last seven decades.Here, teaching & learning is an inno-vative amalgam of traditional andmodern methodologies, resulting in be-coming a natural choice for students.The commitment of the college towardsholistic growth of the individuals hasbeen able to attract the best students inacademics, sports, and co-curricular ac-tivities. first edition of this Newsletter. I amtaking this as an appropriate opportu-nity to apprise the students of the jour-ney of evolution of the academic soul ofour college.Way back, on 25th May, 1948, DAVManaging Committee unanimouslypassed a resolution that a new collegeshall be opened in Delhi, to be named asHansraj College. The most befitting ed-ucationist, Dr. G. L. Dutta was chosento be the first Principal of the College,which had a humble start in two roomsin the premises of DAV School, Chi-tragupta Road; offering only twocourses, Prep. and B.A. (Pass). Mr.Anand Prakash was the first studentenrolled in the college. Honours coursesin Mathematics, Economics, English,Sanskrit, Philosophy, History andHindi were introduced. The collegestarted the classes for M.A. Sanskrit,Hindi and Mathematics in 1949-50,while B. Com. (Pass) was started in1953-54. While History (Hons.) wasadded in 1956-57, session 1962-63witnessed the introduction of B. Com.(Hons.); wherein a batch of 40 studentswas enrolled. In the very next year, M.Sc. Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoologyand Anthropology were also started. Continuing the journey of expansion,as well as in light of ever increasing de-mand, the Management decided to addM.A. History and B. Sc. (Hons.) inGeology in the session 1968-69.After almost three decades of serving thesociety and producing best of students,the college became co-educational forundergraduate courses also in 1976.

Till then, there were only 32 femalestudents enrolled for M. A. classes. Thebeginning of 80’s witnessed addition ofM. A. Economics. Thereafter, M. Com.and B. Sc. (Hons.) were added in thecurriculum in 1987. With the start ofnext session, an equipped Electronicslab was made functional while B. Com.(Pass) was discontinued.To keep pace with the changing envi-ronment, the Honours course in Com-puter Science was added with the startof 1998-99 session.By now, our college is almost like a miniuniversity, shaping the future of morethan 5000 students and groomingthem into the future builders of ourcountry and brand ambassadors of ourvalues globally.In my 35 years of association with thecollege, starting as a first year studentin 1981, and then as a teacher since1987, I have lived and grown withthis temple of learning. I am indebtedto the Almighty for giving me the op-portunity to be a part of this movementcalled Hansraj College and pray thatbeing an Hansrajian, I get strength toimbibe the values of selflessness, truth-fulness, self-discipline, commitmentand service. Theirtargeted areas for plantation were lawn near amphithe-ater and playground area. The event was led by PayalLFT college head and co-head Abhishek. Around 80volunteers came up for the noble cause and event be-came successful in its plantation drive and grabbing theattention as well. The event was executed well by itsmembers - added a source!!

ENACTUS AT WORK! - Project Boond

The previous year brought a lot ofglory to Enactus Hans Raj. Itssincere year-long efforts at theEnactus India National Competition2015 invested in the team’s ProjectBoond and Project Mithaas helpedit secure the 3rd position at thenational level. Project Boond aims toprovide access to clean drinkingwater to the unprivileged throughpurifiers that do not use electricityand Project Mithaas establishes bee-keeping as an alternate source ofincome for the farmers. Teammembers representing the college atthe competition attest to the eventbeing exhilarating and satisfying inaddition to being a memorablelearning experience.Enactus Hans Raj followed arigorous recruitment process thisyear, carefully choosing new mem-bers from a pool of immenselyskillful aspirant entrepreneurswilling to make the world aroundthem a better place. A new sessionhence brings to Enactus a new team,which undoubtedly retains the oldspirit and unflinching zeal of thesociety. With the new pool of

talented members come new ideasand a renewed sense of enthusiasm.The members hope that this yearwould be even more rewarding thanthe last, and that they are able topositively impact and transform livesof those in need while creatingyoung leaders to take on the world. Project Boond is an initiative byEnactus Hansraj to provide theunprivileged masses, who cannotafford purifiers available in themarket, with an easy access to cleandrinking water through theproduction of low cost waterpurifiers that run without electricity.The water purifiers are based on amulti-stage Carbon Filter – UFMembrane purification systemwhich gives pure water and protectsagainst water-borne diseases. The students, during their need-assessment survey, found out that thepeople living in slum areas in Delhiare mainly occupied with manualwork that does not pay enough tosustain their lives. They are depend-ent on the municipal taps for watersupply, which is often not fit fordrinking purposes. So they came up

with the idea of providing them withlow-cost water purifiers make cleandrinking water accessible to and af-fordable for them.

The project has been success-fully implemented and has greatlysolved the problem of clean drinkingwater for many. The team is workingtowards spreading awareness aboutwater sanitation and its need.Production of these purifiers iscarried out by an intellectuallychallenged community under NGOSamvedna in Delhi. The communityis being empowered in a manner thatwill ensure an improvement in theirlivelihood by instilling in them asense of confidence and a belief thatthey are accepted by the society,along with providing them a finan-cial stability.With the expansion and growth op-portunities that the Enactus team vi-sualizes, Project Boond has thepotential to solve a major clean-water crisis that is faced by thou-sands of people in the city aloneevery day.

The Investment and Finance Cell,Department of Commerce, HansRaj College organised Stock Guru -a freshers' inter-college mock stockcompetition yesterday on 9th Octo-ber 2015. The competition com-prised of two main rounds - theprelims and the finals, which werefurther divided into two roundseach.After two intensely occupyingrounds, the results were declared,with the prize money and goodiesfrom Worlds of Wonder being dis-tributed on the spot. The winners were as follows:First position - Aarush Jain andRohan Bhatia from SSCBS;First runner-up: Sankalp Vohrafrom Sri Venkateswara College; andSecind runner-up: GagandeepSingh from SGGSCC.The competition gave the studentsan insight into the nitty gritties ofthe finance world.

It witnessed a footfall of over300 participants, who representedcolleges from all over Delhi. The Department of Commerce,Hans Raj College, organized a paneldiscussion "E-Talk: where revolu-tionaries plot the future" on 19thOctober 2015, Monday in the col-lege auditorium. The topic for thediscussion was "Current start-upecosystem in India".The panelists for the event were Mr.Alok Vaish, CFO, yatra.com, Mr.Rohit Chawla, founder, iLabs andshopsberry.com, and Mr. UmangKumar, president, cardekho.com andco-founder, gaadi.com. The modera-tor for the discussion was VinayakSingla, a commerce student from thecollege.Main topic discussed: The currententrepreneurial ecosystem, How togo about failures and Funding. Manyother points were discussed. The audience listened to the discus-sion keenly, and asked various ques-tions from the panelists, it helpedbroaden their horizons.

India’s energy sector has always beenin a state of perennial deficit, withthe demands far exceeding the sup-plies. This has forced our policymak-ers to resort to imports which in turnhave burdened our economy withseemingly insurmountable debts. Arecent study states that 78.75% ofIndia’s crude oil demands arecompensated with imports. Thismeans that in the current fiscal year,India will have to spend a staggeringUSD 115 billion to meet the nation’severincreasing oil consumption as per thecurrent barrel rate which is slated toincrease steadily. The import dependent oil industry isjust one part of India’s grim energyscenario. The country’s natural gasmarket is also reeling under shortageof supplies. In the last fiscal quarter38% of the gas demand was unmet.As a result, the dependence on LNGimports has increased and there hasbeen an underutilization of gas-con-suming industries, particularly in thepower and fertilizer sectors. Addi-tionally, the existing gas-based unitshave to rely on expensive alternativefuels such as naphtha, diesel, furnaceoil and LNG to meet demand. Thegas shortage problem has been ag-gravated by dwindling productionlevels in the KG-D6 block. There-fore, the construction of new gas-based units, particularly in the powersector, which were allocated suppliesfrom the block has been stalled. Thismeans that the country’s dependenceon imported gas is likely to increaseconsiderably. The share of importedgas in India’s total gas supplies is

likely to increase from 22.5% inFY12 to 54.2% in FY22.In additionto this India’s thermal energy sectoris in a perilous state. Having saidthat, the beaurocratic inadequacy,political indecision and crony capi-talism are partly to be held responsi-ble in addition to the unfavorablyskewed demand to supply ratio.India's January 2015 imports in-cluded 12.76 million tonnes of pow-ergenerating thermal coal and 2.40million steelmaking coking coal, ac-cording to the data from a jointstudy by Tata Steel and the SteelAuthority of India Ltd. Given thestate of the supply deficit and heavyreliance on imports, it becomes im-perative for India to harness all it’senergy resources, including shale gas,appropriately. The unlocking of do-mestic shale gas can help India meetits growing energy demand, besidesreducing its dependence on expen-sive energy imports and the energyimport bill. According to the experts,there are many basins in India withrich shale energy reserves. But forthe time being six such basins havebeen identified wherefrom extractionis possible. They are Cambay, Assam-Arakan, Gondwana, Krishna-Go-davari, Kaveri, and the IndoGangeticplain.India also has a healthy shalegas recovery rate which hoverssomewhere around as compared tothe recovery rate of a mere 30% as-sociated with conventional oil andgas. A case in point is Gujarat wherethe development of gas infrastruc-ture led to the application of gas innew sectors such as industrial andcommercial establishments in the ce-

ramics, glass, chemicals, textiles,pharmaceuticals and diamond in-dustries, among others like thehousehold and automobile segmentshave the potential to further boostcity gas demand as well. Once gas is cheap and widely avail-able, it is possible to consider dealingwith the “last mile” problem of pro-viding home refuelling kits so con-sumers can fill up natural-gaspowered cars in their own garages.In addition, under an exploration in-centive scheme, companies receivesubsidies for arranging drilling andhydraulic fracturing equipment.Other countries such as Algeria,Poland and China are currently inthe process of framing new regula-tory policies, which includes quickerland approvals and tax-free importsof equipment. In 2010, China cre-ated a National Gas ShaleTaking cue from these steps, theIndia’s government and entrepre-neurs must consider the immenseuntapped potential of India’s shalegas reserves as a viableenergy alternative.By- Subhomay Saha

Kalam Sir is no more. When I heardthis sad news on radio, I could notbelieve this. What an incidence thata teacher has lost his life among hisstudents, while delivering a lecture.It took seven days to normalize my-self because it seemed that I have lostmy own father, my own teacher, whotaught me through his books likeWings of Fire, Ignited Minds, Forgeyour Future, My Journey: Trans-forming Dreams into Actions. I hadthe opportunity to listen and interactwith him in the years 2000, 2003 and2010 at Vigyan Bhawan, Universityof Delhi and Teen Murti Library re-spectively. After meeting him I real-ized that how a hard worker scientistbehaved like a ‘saint’.

Kalam Sir was a man courage,conviction and commitment who in-spired not only the young scientistsof ISRO and DRDO but also stu-dents and teachers of schools, col-leges and universities. Even whileholding the post of President, heworked as an apolitical figure acrossall political parties. His simple butpowerful speeches and inspiringwritings have always ignited youngminds. Being a scientist, he was wellcautious that in the race of technicaldevelopment we should not forgetthe value of humanity. In one of his

speeches he remarked—‘We haveguided missiles but misguidedhuman beings.’

In all his speeches he emphasizedthe significance of human values byquoting the words of Martin LutherKing Jr’s – “The biggest crisis ofpresent generation is the crises ofhuman values.” Therefore, it is ourduty to nurture and inculcate ethicalvalues as well as technical skills inschool children.

Being even a scientist he did nothave any negative attitude towardsreligion because he did not perceivescience and religion as contradictorydomains. He wrote in his Autobiog-raphy, Wings of Fire pg. 15.-

“I wonder why some people tendto see science as something whichtakes man away from God. As I lookat it, the path of science can alwayswind through the heart. For me, sci-ence has always been the path tospiritual enrichment and self-reali-sation.”

This view was well endorsed byfamous scientist Einstein in a differ-ent way- “Science without religionis a lame and religion without sci-ence is blind.”There are some thinkers who criti-cized Kalam as ‘being hawkish ’ be-cause he led the developments of

AGNI series missiles. But thesecriticisms are not very convincing.Our past experiences of our neigh-bouring countries have not beengood. If any country attack on usthen we cannot defend ourselves bythis excuse that we are very poorand peace loving country, please donot attack on us. Therefore it be-comes necessary for us to make ourarmy strong by upgrading Scienceand Technology. Dr. Kalam did it byinfusing the aphorism- “Only

strength respects strength.” into theminds of scientists and politicians.In this context he side-lined theview of even the great economistProf. Amartya Sen, who said thatMay 1998, Pokhran-2 nuclear testwas ‘ill conceived.’ (For detail, seeIgnited Minds, pg. 109-10).

This does not mean that Dr.Kalam was not concerned aboutsocio-economic issues like poverty,health, education, and unemploy-ment. He was deeply involved in thesolution of these problems. In hisbooks like Ignited Minds, India

2020, Beyond 2020 and Target 3Billion; PURA: Innovative Solu-tions Towards Sustainable Develop-ment, he identified five areas forintegrated development of India viz.food-security, education, health,electricity and technology. Kalamemphasized the urgency of rural de-velopment for a better India. He re-established the Gandhian sloganthat ‘the soul of India lives in vil-lages.’ He opined that India can’t bea developed nation without rural de-

velopment. The migration from vil-lages to cities is a big problem inIndia because it badly affects theurban infrastructure and also de-stroys the fabric of joint family sys-tem. Rural development is the onlysolution to this problem. He startedPURA (Providing Urban Amenitiesin Rural Area) to serve the samepurpose.

Kalam Sir was a man of action.There is hardly any differenceamong his thought, speech and ac-tion. This is the reason that a personbelonging to a very poor family and

a non-descript place reached thepinnacle of such a meaningful suc-cess without compromising his in-tegrity. His simple and hearttouching speeches and writings willcontinue to inspire the coming gen-erations. Some of his thoughts thathe wrote and delivered in his variousspeeches are followings-1. When a difficulty arises be thecaption of it and defeat it. Let thedifficulty know that you are too diffi-cult to defeat.2. Dreams are not those which yousee in your sleep but are those whichdo not let you sleep.3. When I enter into my laboratorythen I leave all of my worries outsidejust as my father took off his shoesoutside when he entered into themosque for prayer.4. Courage is the highest virtue be-cause in the absence of it one cannotpractice other virtue.5. Thinking is capital, enterprise isthe way, and hard work is the solu-tion.6. Indian youth must de-learn self-defeating way of life.7. A good book is equal to hundredfriends but a good friend is equal towhole library.And finally, at the last page of his

autobiography, he wrote in a very

poignant way-8. This is the story of a lad who soldnewspapers to help his brother,whose sister, Zohara mortgaged hergold bangles for his engineering fees,whose mother feed her last chapattiand kept herself hungry. This storywill end with me, for I have no in-heritance in the worldly sense. I haveacquired nothing, built nothing - nofamily, sons, and daughters. ... I donot wish to set myself as an exampleto others, but I believe that a fewsouls may draw inspirations andcome to balance that ultimate satis-faction which can only be found inthe life of the spirit.

There is no doubt that histhoughts and teachings will echo inthe heart, mind and soul of every In-dian. Mother India has lost her trueson. The real tribute will be thatwhen we inculcate his teachings andphilosophy of work culture in ourlife. We assure you SIR we shall doit definitely.

TRIBUTE TO “KALAM” SIR

There is no definition of corruption which is accepted universally, but in general it can be said to mean the abuse ofbestowed power or position seeking personal benefits. It umbrellas many activities including bribery and embezzle-ment. The word "corrupt", when used as an adjective, literally means "utterly broken" which signifies the completebreakdown of the system within which the person is working.Nowadays, every news channel and newspaper comes with headlines that cover news of offices being raided andmore officials being caught taking bribes, be it in a municipality office or among politicians, corruption is prevalenteverywhere from the lowest rungs of the hierarchy to the highest ones. Corruption alone is powerful enough tostagnate our nation's growth and hinder the tag of a developing country. Today, its tentacles have spread for andwide and have penetrated so deep inside our systems of work that it has become a common place part of our lives.The issue has been in notice for quite long but, unfortunately, it has not cropped up any remedial measure, be it AamAadmi Party's making a political issue in the elections or Bhartiya Janta Party's working diligently towards amendinglaws against Black Money and making them stricter. None of them could ultimately give a refined and efficient ver-sion of it. It would also be unjust to blame the government entirely for it, because we as individuals also need towork sincerely towards removing this malice from the country. Nowadays, media is playing an active role in bringingthe corrupt officials to face the camera in front of the public, and that uncovers their numerous murky dealings. Thesting operatives are a step in the right direction. But there is a need for everyone to work towardsa nation free of corruption. We should encourage a healthy national and moral mindset that doesnot allow it at any level.To deal with this problem only Government policies and raising one's morality alone will not suffice.Both of these need to be strategized in the most efficient way to tackle it. A single individual or asmall group would stand quite insignificant in eradicating widespread corruption. It has to be a col-lective effort, and that too on a large scale. Only then we could possibly dream of getting rid of itfrom the roots.

CORRUPTION - Is It Inevitable ??

Empiricalscience historically developed out ofNatural Philosophy.From the mid-19th century, when itbecame increasingly unusual for sci-entists to contribute to both Physicsand Chemistry, "natural philosophy"came to mean only Physics. IsaacNewton's book Philosophiae NaturalisPrincipia Mathematica (1687), whosetitle translates in English to "Mathe-matical Principles of Natural Philos-ophy", reflects the use of the words"natural philosophy” in his times. Andin the 19th century, a treatise by LordKelvin and Peter Guthrie Tait's,which helped defining much of mod-ern Physics, was titled Treatise onNatural Philosophy (1867).Even today, we make hypotheses,especially in Physics, on the basis ofthe concepts of Natural Philosophy,considering empirical data. Science asunderstood today is a little differentfrom Natural Philosophy. For in-stance, Natural Philosophy states thatall principles are consistent and ex-pressible in some form as expressed inmathematical language, but it doesnot care about scientific data like sci-entists have fundamental force equa-tion, and complete the equation andtheir constants by boundary condi-tions which are observe experimen-tally. This is the reason the term"Science" was defined, which marks

the difference between Natural Phi-losophy and itself. A Physicist al-ways believes in Natural Philosophyand predicts that Natural Philosophyshall take over all aspects of scienceand umbrella them within itself. Onecan understand this process like this:The empirical data itself will be de-termined by understanding the theo-retical aspects.The term ‘Science’ gained itscontemporary meaning whenexperimental science and the studyscientific method became a special-ized branch of study apart from Nat-ural philosophy. In an axioms ofNatural Philosophy, the Law ofCausality, Causality is described byNatural Philosophy as invariant overtime; the natural laws are expressiblein a language that is mathematical innature; and law of induction as well asother laws of nature are consistent.Natural Philosophy doesn’t say thatfuture is deterministic. It says thereare laws, in which you can believe, onwhich every idea, every thought isbuilt.Natural Philosophy includesastronomy and cosmology, the studyof nature on a grand scale; etiology,the study of causes; the study ofchance, probability and randomness;the study of elements; the study of theinfinite and the unlimited (virtual oractual); the study of matter; mechan-ics, the study of translation of motionand change; the study of nature or thevarious sources of actions; the study ofnatural qualities; the study of physicalquantities; the study of relations be-tween physical entities; and the phi-losophy of space and time.

The study of Natural Philosophy seeksto explore the cosmos by any meansnecessary to understand the universe.Some ideas presuppose that change isa reality. Although this may seemobvious, there have been somephilosophers who have denied theconcept of metamorphosis, such asPlato's predecessor Parmenides andlater Greek philosopher Sextus Em-piricus, and perhaps some Easternphilosophers. George Santayana, inhis Skepticism and Animal Faith, at-tempted to show that the reality ofchange cannot be proven. If hisreasoning is sound, it follows that tobe a Physicist, one must restrain one'sskepticism enough to trust one'ssenses, or else rely on anti-realism.Scientists propose hypothesesleading to coherent, organizedtheories that are eventually validatedby experiments. The theoretical studyof Nature i.e. theoretical Physics isgrounded on Natural Philosophy. Ifthe theoretical study is consistent withthe preexistent theoretical study ornatural philosophy, it must be true. Ahistorical example would be that of1960s, when seven experimental re-sults were wrong against the theoret-ical formulation of an idea, becausewhat was inferred from thoseexperiments was wrong and theoreti-cal results were already consistentwith old theories and the idea wasproved later experimentally with newapproach by experimentalists. That iswhy theoretical Physics is a funda-mental study, and it is concurrent withNatural Philosophy.

Pre-vious attempts to craft a coherent approach werethwarted by competing for national interests and insis-tence by some countries, mainly the former ommunistcountries which object to having policies imposed uponthem by others.The Visegrad Four, i.e. Czech Republic, Hungary, Slo-vakia, and Poland, downright rejected the refugee quota.These countries feel that distribution of migrants shouldtake place on a voluntary basis. They have also demandedthe borders of the Schengen Area to take more securitymeasures and protect against smugglers while also de-vising a way to streamline returning refugees to theircountries of origin. The Hungarian Prime Minister Vik-tor Orban has warned that the growing Muslim influxis threatening Europe’s “Christian roots.” Although theUK has agreed to provide asylum to 10,000 refugees, itis pushing for EU reforms to check migration withinEurope (especially from Eastern European countries).

Europe witnessed a most severe refugee crisis in the sum-mer of 2015, with more refugees coming in than duringthe Second World War era. The Syrian population founditself at the centre of struggles amongst the regime, rebelgroups and other extremist factions. All these groups areresponsible for some of the most abominable war crimescommitted against humanity, their methods including theuse of chemical warfare, mass executions, large-scale tor-ture, and repeated deathly attacks on civilians. An esti-mated one-third of the Syrian population has beendisplaced within the country itself while over 4,000,000have had to flee the country. A lot of these refugees, aboutninety-five percent, have been given refuge to by neigh-bouring countries namely Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon,Egypt and Iraq. The Arab states of the Persian Gulf,Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, and Oman,together have accepted zero refugees, and this failure hasbeen called ‘especially shameful’ by Amnesty Interna-tional. The United Nations and The World Food Pro-gramme were not prepared for a refugee crisis of this scale

Accepting a mere 0.25% of the total number of refugeescoming to Europe from Syria, would not only demolishBritain's credibility of being a global power but wouldalso deprive it of an opportunity to be a forerunner infinding a suitable solution to this problem. David Cam-ron, Prime Minister of Britain, has termed the recentwave of refugees coming to Europe as a “swamp of peo-ple”. On one hand, he talks about increasing the inter-vention in the Middle East for “taking action right acrossthe board, helping countries from which these people arecoming, stabilising them and trying to make sure thereare worthwhile jobs and stronger economies there.” Andon the other hand, he chooses to ignore that the inter-vention, although necessary, does notsolve the problem of relocating therefugees. In 2014, the UK lobbied tostop an enormous search-and-rescueoperation called Mare Nostrum thatwas designed to discontinue asylumseekers from drowning in theMediterranean.

He is only 20 years young and has won over 80 awards till date. His dedication tosing better and best following every dawn seems to be an inspiration for everyone.So, in order to get some encouragement and valuable advice for the upcoming, wishing to be singers, here is a small interview with the maestro.

Meenakshi Sheoran, an alumni of Army Public School and presently a third year undergraduate majoring in Englishliterature at Hansraj College, Delhi University has seen it all in the first 19 years of her life. From being a commonschool going girl to becoming a national level shooter, her life has been quite like a roller coaster ride. She currentlypossesses 4th position in All India Junior Ranking and is aiming for a lot more in life. Here is a small talk we hadwith her:Q. It is appreciable and inspiring to see you faring so well in your life at such an early age. How did it all start?Ans. I was an ordinary school going girl till class 12th, and wanted to become an astronaut. But it was only in class12th that I realized what I actually wanted from my life. I started practicing at the army shooting range and eventually

life happened to me and took its course. Further, you always have parents and sen-iors who constantly guide and support you to achieve more in life.Q. That is amazing! So what has been your biggest achievement till date?It is undoubtedly when I had bagged my 4th ranking in the All India Junior Rank-ing. I was on 95th rank and achieving the 4th one at one go was truly a tremendousexperience.Q. And what about your first achievement?Ans. Well frankly speaking, I consider taking up shooting was in itself the firstachievement for me. It was the first time in my life that I knew what I want fromit and I started taking it very seriously after that. Talking materialistically, I hadbagged a silver medal in the state championship, which was my first achievementas a shooter.Q. Being a girl, was it an easy thing to become a shooter in the first place?Ans. Well, I think gender discrimination by near and dear ones has almost neverhappened with me. I have always had my parents and coaches me supporting meat each level. In fact, I believe that their inclination towards not being biasedagainst females is precisely what has landed me here, and I am grateful to themfor that. Further, I feel that as long as you are focused and you know what youwant from life, and you really, really want it, things like your sex do not matter.No sex is innately inferior to the other. Q. What are your future prospects?

Ans. I have the Asian Championship coming in November, so I am just gearing up for that.Further, all I want from life is to achieve a better position each day and become a better human being. I want tomake my country proud and I am working on this dream every day. I would also like to be an inspiration to the girlswho wish to come out of their shells and do what they want in their lives. We all have that feeling that we must giveour best, no matter what. After all, who doesn't want a satisfactory life in the end.

Thefirst match of league was with St.Xaviers on 19th September evening.They won that match by score of 54-40. Second match of league was withLoyala College Chennai final scorewas 69- 47 in favor of HansrajCollege. Then last match of leaguewas against Jamia Milia Islamia finalscore was 58-42. After being first inthe pool matches, team qualified forquarter finals which was played

against LNIUPE Gwalior and beatthem by score of 56-43 and qualifiedfor semi finals which held on 22September against BKBIT Pilani inwhich the final score was 67-42. Thefinal match was against Shri RamCollege of Commerce on 22September evening. During matchKunal Raghav's ankle got twistedand Mohit Phutela got injured butstill hansraj team performed well butas it wasn't their day.

The 13th Asian Shooting Championship will be held soon inKuwait. Leaving at November 01, Tushar Jain, Meenakshi Sheoranand Prerna Gupta from HRC would participate in this quadrennialevent. This is the last match before the Olympics through whichthe shooters could obtain a quota for the country.

Several memories floated across my mind when I was asked to write an article on my experience in LSE. I must saythat it was a time of my life. I had filled the application in the month of February, and one day the confirmationletter showed up on my doorstep. In no time, I left for London. Landing there, I found myself among students fromall nationalities. And it was a pleasure to meet them, greet them and learn from them. The course I opted for wasJudgment and Decision Making for Management. It was a three weeks intense course. From the first day itself itproved to be very interesting and enriching. The whole course was divided into two sections, a mid term exam afterthe first one and the final paper at the end of the second session. I took both the tests and had managed to score anA+. The faculty, the library, the atmosphere in the school, all of it was even better than how Ihad desired it to be. Also LSE had organized various social events for its students, which gaveus that streak of fun and relaxation amidst our busy schedule.Being on your own in Londonfor three weeks is an amazing opportunity to get familiarized with London. The weather wasan icing on the cake to my stay there. The best part of the whole program was that we wereall so carefree as everything fell into the right place on its own. We didn’t have to worry aboutanything and thus had a lot of fun. And amidst all that I was too overwhelmed to realize Iwas going through what would crystallize into memories for life. In the end I would like to say that the experience, the exposure, the friends, the memories,and that independence made my summer 2015, the best summer of my life.

It was managedby Mr. Chakraborty, the HOD of Physical Education in the college. 12 players could participate from all over DU,out of which 6 were to be selected. Hansraj feels proud that out of these 6 students, 3 were from Hansraj College.Harshit Muchal (B.Com I year), Junaid Muzaffar (I year), and Siddharth Choudhary (B.A. Eng. hons. I year) werethe three students.

Shivani ranked 3rd in NAEST-2015Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) aims to upgrade the quality of the teaching ofphysics at professional levels. Anveshika is an IAPT initiative which organizes the event“Anveshika-NAEST” annually in different regions of India so that students and teachers canlearn experiment-based Physics and try out their own ideas. It is a competition which testexperimental skills . There were four rounds: Screening, Prelim, Semi-Final and Final. Screeningand Prelim exams were conducted on 21st and 28th of August, respectively at Archarya NarendraCollege. Shivani cleared both exams and ranked 1st in Delhi region. The participants who clearedformer exams with 1st rank were invited to Kanpur for the next two rounds. In total, there were 17 participantsfrom all over India. Shivani cleared the Semi-Final on 30th September and the final round was conducted on October1, 2015. The results came out at evening and she ranked 3rd. Here is Shivani's Experience:-

Q1. You have scored 3rd rank in Anveshika NAEST, and you represented college and Delhi region in semi-final and final, wouldyou like share your experience?Ans. Yes, it was indeed an amazing experience. I was given accommodation in IIT Kanpur which is again a prestigiousinstitute for physicists. Frankly speaking, I never thought that I would come so far in this competition and to secure3rd position was something I had never expected. We were supposed to perform 3 experiments in the semifinalsand the finals, each taking not more than 45 minutes. Also, we had to derive many important results out of that. So,overall it was a test to check the experimental skills of a student. The main motive of this competition was to makestudents understand the fact that we can derive the most important results of physics from the scrap.

Q2. You met Dr. H.C. Verma, who is one of the most distinguished professors in India, what did you learnt from him?Ans. I was feeling lucky and honored to meet Dr. H.C. Verma. He sounded very modest and was polite with all thestudents. He was helping all of us throughout the competition. He helped us in analyzing the data we collectedthrough the experiment. It was more or less a learning session going on under his supervision.

Q3. The Anveshika test is about to test experimental skills of students and you scored 3rd rank in India. Would you like to tell othersabout what the most important skills one must have while performing experiments and analyzing scientific data are?Ans. I believe that all you need is to analyze the things around you. What I have learned through this competitionis that a good experimentalist should be very precise about what s/he needs to determine through the experiment.The method to be followed should be one’s own. During the competition , my mentor told me that if I wanted tobecome a good experimentalist than I should follow the first principle approach, which actually meant that oneshould be creative enough to design his own way of doing something. Otherwise if s/he follows somebody else’smethod, then they have to quote it as well. Also, according to me experimenters should be always ready to face bigchallenges.

Q. Hello Saptak! You have now gone famous andhave successfully established your name on thestepping stones in the field. So, who was your firstinspiration or idol that inspired you to startsinging?Ans. My first and biggest inspiration is my father,who is also my guru Shri Sarathi Chatterjee. I alsodraw inspiration from Pandit Rajan Sajan Mishra,Pandit Arjun Chakravarti and my grand fatherShri Arun Kumar Chatterjee. I also like westernartist like Steven Wilson and Pink Floyd.

Q. Nice, so, how old were you when you sang yourfirst song and what was it? Ans. I sung my first song when I was 4, mymother taught me a bangali song and luckily I got1st prize in the competition. Q. Great! what you love the most about singing?

Ans. I love singing because according to me, it is the universal language to expressone's emotion. Each and every or any emotion that a human heart can feel,whether it is love, sorrow, happiness can be expressed using music. One can nar-rate an event, poem, spin a story with it.

Q. How does it feel to get so many awards at such a young age? Ans. I don't really think how many awards I have got really matters.At the end of the day, as you know where you stand, how good orbad you are, how technically you sound are, how much grip youhave on your art is what matters. Maybe 6 years down the line, theseawards won't matter as hopefully I would have achieved somethingmore. At the end of day training, raiyaz, dedication and how honestyou are to your art, is what matters the most. One's focus needs tobe absolute and absolutely not diverted.

Q. Who was the first one to recognize your talent? Ans. My family was the first one to discover that music was in myheart and ever since they had recognized it, they have always triedto develop it further. They are helping me make myself a better mu-sician.

Q. What keeps you motivated to keep practicing singing?Ans. Practicing helps me develop my skills. My passion anddesire to learn more, help me understand music in a betterway, help me feel music in a better way. Music is what I wantto take as my career that is one thing that motivates me .So Ihave to concentrate and develop my skills in order to be suc-cessful in life...

Q. What is your goal in life? What role has your family hasplayed to develop your hobby into career? Ans. My goal in life is to be a musician, to spread the wingsof classical music, spread the knowledge that I have receivedfrom elders! My aim is to take music to a level where peopleforget everything else and just enjoy the music, its notes andmelody.

Q. What’s your band name? What all events you guys have been a part of ? Ans. Well, my band's name is The Hansraj Projekt .We participate in all DUcompetition, IIT Kanpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi etc. My band has been fortu-nate enough that we have won almost all of them. We have been lucky enoughto open the stage for Bollywood celebrities like Mohit chauhan, Farhan Akhtarand privilege of sharing the stage with raghu dikshit, etc.

Q. Wow! That is a great achievement. So, when we are talking about music andsinging, you prefer English songs or Hindi songs and why? Ans. Language doesn't matter to me as long as I can feel the tune, vibe, melody,be it Hindi, Urdu, English, Bengali, Spanish etc. Music needs to be soothing tothe ears.

Q. Would you like to make singing as your professionor would like to let it remain your passion? Ans. Singing is my passion .I’m trying my level bestto convert my passion into my profession.

Q. What studying in Hansraj has give you? What's the best thing about Hansraj? Studying in Hansraj made me meet my fellow music society members without whom Iwould have no knowledge about western music .They have helped me grow as a musiciana lot .The best thing about Hansraj is its ECA, its massive cultural societies where studentsare very dedicated.

Q. Any message for your Hansraj juniors? Something you have learnt in these years which is important for juniors to follow in their college life?Ans. It is extremely important to join a society, apart from the academics. You get to learn a lot of other things in the society .Each and every member ofsociety teaches you a lot they help you to grow as a person in totality.Thank you so much Saptak for sharing your views and proving a direction to work on by our upcoming juniors. The Mask Design competition ‘Masquer-ade, Rendezvous’ was held on 19th of Oc-tober, Monday in IIT Delhi. Two teamsfrom the fine arts society ‘Kalakriti’ ofHansraj College participated, one of theteam Sagarika Rao (I year) and AvishiGoyal (I year) won the first prize. They hadto design a mask having some thought-provoking theme behind it. The competi-tion consisted of prelim round, whereinparticipants were supposed to make theidea on paper with 3D effects. From thisround 20 teams were selected among 65 teams. They made a 3D peacock outof paper maché and cut the feathers out of another sheet of paper which de-teriorated towards the end basically trying to show how resources are dwin-dling as well as degrading at the rate of extinction. Blood dripping fromsecond eye stating how our society is moving towards self-destruction. Thejury loved their piece and awarded Rs.7000 to the team along withcertificates of appreciation.

Not concerned much with theassociated profits, Sirjandeep wants the novel to reach every household. “I want to express this to all the girls that keeping quiet is no way to deal.You need to raise voice because if you choose not to speak today, then you can never speak to choose”, she adds.

One can easily draw lines on a blackboard using a chalk. But if one wants to etchdotted lines smoothly, it is certainly not an easy task. Fortunately, there is a way todraw dotted lines that feels like drawing normal curves on a blackboard with theuse of a chalk. The easy trick was invented by Dr. Walter Lewin at a very young age.Following are the steps in his strategy: 1. Pick the chalk very tightly, as one picks for normal drawing.2. Start drawing with chalk. This will give continuous curves.3. The angle which the chalk makes is only the important point here. Normally, oneplaces the chalk on black-board making 30-60 degree angle from the lower side ormeasured clockwise from right-side. 4. To draw dotted lines, make this angle about 145 degree, or 45 degree from the upper side.5. Now pull the chalk down, but keep putting pressure on it constantly. The lines will be dotted lines.6. Whatever you want to draw in dotted lines. Keep 145 degree angle from the side where you want to proceed.Higher the speed more spacing between dotted lines. 7. By practicing for hours, one will become expert drawing dotted lines easily and smoothly. Happy sketching!
