being compiled for analysis.

Wheat rusts surveillance activity 2015 in Sindh: The maximum infections of leaf rust were recorded at the localities of District Thatta. The maximum infection of yellow rust were recorded on Kiran-95 80S with 80% incidence at Daulatpur. The maximum infection of stem rust were recorded at Allah Tawakkal farm Umerkot on Galaxy-13 i.e. 60MS with 20 to 30%.

Performance evaluation of 21 exotic potato varieties at CDRI, Karachi:The crop was harvested and data were collected on different yield parameters and analysis was underway.

Biological Control Laboratory at PMRI: It was established recently and is now fully functional. Rearing of Papaya mealybug, Paracoccus marginatus, on Papaya leaves and fruits, round bottle gourd, pumpkin and potato was started.

Assessment of Storage Losses on Dry Basis in Basmati Rice: Rice bags (Marked) were weighed and placed (Horizontally and Vertically) at different positions. The purpose was to find the losses that take place during storage at different position, which indicated that on wet basis, the overall losses in basmati rice assessed by this method was 3.65 %. The average loss positions in vertical positions were same as in dry basis i.e. maximum loss took place in top layers followed middle and bottom.

Rodent Control: Evaluation of Vegetable Oils as taste enhancers against Norway rat, Rattus norvegicus. During the reporting month, three additional oils were used as additive (3%) in a bait base of wheat flour and broken rice under no-choice test to ascertain the potential of different oils against Rattus norvegicus. Sex-wise mean daily consumption data revealed no-significant difference in bait intake.

1.2 National Sugar Crops & Tropical Horticulture Research Institute (NSTHRI), Thatta:

Maintenance of sugarcane germplasm for flowering study: A total of 195 varieties/lines of National & International germplasm were planted during 2014-15. The growth performance of all the varieties/ lines was satisfactory and all are at tillering phase with average 4-5 tillers/plant.

Sugarcane nursery development: Fuzz of 22 sugarcane varieties was sown. Out of which, total 11 genotypes exhibited germination and produced 11103 seedlings. These seedlings are being maintained properly.

Mungbean+Sugarcane Intercropping Trials: Mungbean sown as sole and intercropped with sugarcane on 25 farmer’s fields in District Thatta and Sujawal was monitored properly. During the visit it was observed that the mungbean crop in some grower’s field has been burnt due to heavy irrigation water application.

Banana & Sugarcane Seed Multiplication Through Tissue Culture: Banana Tissue Culture: Total 3797 shoots of banana are under

multiplication/sub-culturing, 774 plants are under rooting and 1295 plants of institute lab + 2627 plants from NARC are under hardening process.

vaccine by serial passages on Vero cells. For the current month, 42 serial passages have been completed.

Four PPR isolates were recovered from samples collected during PPR outbreaks from sheep and goats in Tharparkar, Sindh. These isolates were analyzed using RT-PCR for F and N gene for amplification and whole gene sequencing of F and N gene of PPR virus.

Gene specific primers (F, N and M) for detection of PPR vaccine virus isolates were designed using Genious software and ordered for synthesis.

Eight FMD viruses were processed for lyophilisation.

Attended two FMD out breaks in Tarlai and Sohan. Samples were collected from the suspected animals (n = 10). These samples were analysed using indirect sandwich ELISA. Two animals were found positive for FMDV Asia-1.

Under the FMD project, different isolates of FMD virus of serotypes A, O and Asia-I were tested for serum neutralization using ARRIAH and Merial vaccines. It has been shown that ARRIAH vaccinated sera (thirty days post vaccination) gave good protection against FMD serotype O.

Won an RADP sub-project entitled” Establishment of PARC Veterinary Clinic at NARC”

Repository of different local isolates of PPR and FMD viruses are being maintained by the program. Besides, regular maintenance and sub-culturing of Vero and LFBK cell line were performed.
