1-① What are the “Recovery and Reconstruction Games”?Although the 2020 Games are referred to as the “Tokyo” Olympic and Paralympic Games, one of the key pillars promoted at the time of the bid was the support the Games would provide to recovery and reconstruction from the Great East Japan Earthquake, as an event that would involve all of Japan.

The Games are an excellent opportunity to bring the world's attention to three disaster-affected prefectures (Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima).

Site visits by representatives from foreign embassies in Japan of the disaster-affected areas.

<Participants’ feedback>・This is a clear indication that reconstruction is moving ahead. What an amazing achievement considering the situation eight years ago. I also had a chance to see the appeal of tourist areas. I would like to return to this area with my family and friends (Miyagi).・This was a chance for me to see the resilience of the Japanese people. I was struck by the intent to make things stronger (more disaster-resistant) than before the disaster. Education on disaster prevention in Japan should be taught around the world (Iwate).・During my visit to Fukushima, I ate local foods and realized myself just how delicious and safe they are (Fukushima).・I learned that the greatest efforts are being made on-site in these areas even now to recover from the nuclear accident (Fukushima).・I was struck by the students’ clear goals for the future to reconstruct and revitalize Fukushima (Fukushima).

The press and sporting officials from overseas enjoyed dishes made with ingredients from the disaster-affected areas

Visitors watched Soma Nomaoi, an ancient horse racing festival, in Minamisoma City

Many municipalities in the three disaster-affected areas are host towns.

Interactions between residents and Olympians and Paralympians from overseas are also planned to take place

after the Games.

<Examples of activities already started>Sports events for parents and children (baseball event at J-Village, etc.)

To give people from the three disaster-affected areas as many chances as possible to experience the Games:・Torch relay to start at J-Village in Fukushima・Torch Relay to pass through as many areas as possible and extend the number of days for one day to increase opportunities for people to take part as Torch Runners・The first Olympic matches to be held in Fukushima prior to the opening ceremony

“Recovery and Reconstruction Games”

For the Recovery and Reconstruction Games to be successful,

people concerned in Japan from various backgrounds and

people from overseas living in Japan nowor visiting for the Olympic and Paralympic Games

must work together as "one team",

sharing different ideas and taking action.

Active participation of people from all generations is anticipated.

Students took active part as storytellers during the Rugby World Cup.

A student-centered group is creating a monument to be displayed during the Games

to express their appreciation to people supporting reconstruction efforts.

For example, some junior high and high school students are involved in these ways.
