The Jesus of Scripture is a Jew

Two adult studies will start the fall with a study of the book and DVD, “Mudhouse Sabbath” by Lauren

Winner.

• Adult Class meets Sundays 9:45 – 10:20 am in the Chapel

• Men’s Group meets Wednesdays 12:15 pm, in the Gathering Space, starting with a meal

Winner has seen both sides of the Jewish-Christian faiths as a convert to Christianity. Her premise is that we

Christians lose some of the closeness with Jesus when we don’t understand the “Jewishness” of Jesus. The

rituals of the Jewish faith provided meaning for Jesus (observance of Sabbath, dietary restrictions, weddings,

prayer) and we Christian followers of Jesus can become closer to the Savior by learning from the Jewish Jesus

how to do the faith.

As a Jew-turned-Episcopalian, Lauren Winner encourages readers/listeners to:

• Keep Sabbath (Shabbat) separate (that is what the word, “holy” means).

• Be mindful of their food (kashrut)before eating

• Understand Mourning (avelut) is not for 3 days or for 3 months. It is a year-long and life-long process

to be walked in the presence of others.

• Re-think Hospitality (hachnassat orchim) as not a matter of having a perfect house but as a matter of

having an open heart.

• Remember that even one’s doorpost (mezuzot) plays a role in living as God’s people.

Books will be available for purchase at the church for $11. Even if you can’t make it to the class (but it is

better to discuss together than read solo), you may want to pick up a book or easily order online for yourself.

A friend recently pointed out that not only was Jesus a Jew, but so were his 12 disciples and the apostles who

fill the pages of the Book of Acts. When a sidewalk evangelist got in this friend’s faced and demanded, “Do

you know Jesus?” she responded, “Yes! He was a Jew like me!”

We can learn from our Jewish brothers and sisters what it means to follow Jesus – to not only believe in

Jesus, but to do the faith as Jesus did. Jesus the Savior is the fulfillment of the Jewish longing for the Messiah.

Thursday Morning Bible Study We Make the Road by Walking: A year-long quest for spiritual formation,

reorientation, and activation is the latest book by the critically acclaimed author,

Brian McLaren. Each week we’ll read scripture and a 3 page reflection, and then

spend time engaging deep questions of faith and daily life. Books are available

online and can be ordered by Pastor Chris, but they are not required to be part of

the study. Join us Thursdays at 10am beginning September 4.

Men’s Lunch Wednesday, Sept. 10, the Men’s Lunch group will resume its weekly gatherings,

providing “Food for the Body, Food for the Soul.” “Food for the Body, Food for the Soul.” “Food for the Body, Food for the Soul.” “Food for the Body, Food for the Soul.” Dave Wolsky has volunteered to

cook for the group through early November. Meeting in the gathering area at

12:15, men enjoy lunch, fellowship, a time of faith enrichment, and a closing

time of prayer. Pastor Kent Stillson will use a DVD series, focusing on “Jesus is a

Jew.” Volunteers help with setup and getting ready, serving the food and

cleanup. All men are welcome, including men from other churches. A donation of

$5.00 is suggested for the lunch.

The men will have a guest day on Wednesday, Sept. 24. They are encouraged to

invite a church member who has not come before or someone from another

church. There will be a signup sheet at the Welcome Center so Dave can have a

count for his food preparation. Deadline is Sunday, Sept. 21.

A gas BBQ grill has been purchased and will be available for other groups in the

church to use. Check with Don Voss (884-0636) or Sam Hatlestad (882-1413).

Those who use the grill are expected to keep it clean and help replenish the gas

used.

A Word of Thanks A word of thanks to the congregation of Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer and

the Women of LCOOR for your financial help, and for your prayers, when we

attended the national gathering of the Women of the ELCA in Charlotte, North

Carolina this past July. Every three years over 2000 women of the ELCA come

together to worship, learn, laugh, and share their faith, and it is wonderful to be

able to experience this gathering with the support of our congregation and our

women's organization. The next Triennial Gathering of the Women of the ELCA

will be held in Minneapolis, July 13-16, 2017.

St. Dysmas of South Dakota

"I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked, and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me." Matthew 25:35-36

Today the congregation named St. Dysmas is changing the lives of the

incarcerated at the South Dakota State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls.

This fully chartered mission congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church

in America (ELCA) was organized in 1988. St. Dysmas is a pioneer in

establishing bona fide "churches behind bars." Inmates "own" the program

and, through a council elected from their membership, direct its ministry.

Just like other congregations, St. Dysmas parishioners participate in worship,

Bible study, choir, and take part in special projects.

Though incarcerated, these are our brothers and sisters in Christ, members

of one body together with us.

Since prison congregations are not self-supporting, St. Dysmas of South

Dakota must rely on Mission Partnership support, one-time gifts, special

offerings, memorial donations, and contributions made by churches, groups,

and individuals. St. Dysmas is, therefore, a blend of unique congregation and

non-profit organization that cannot exist without financial support from many

sources. Financial support and prayers are needed and appreciated in order

for St. Dysmas of South Dakota to share the gospel with an increasing

population in the prison units in Sioux Falls, SD.

Prayerfully consider in the month of September to help support the ministry of

St. Dysmas through our Mission of the Month. As always, Mission of the Month

is above your regular giving. Please mark your giving clearly with “Mission of

the Month”.

Blankets and quilts are a very special gift to those with extreme poverty. They

bring warmth on a cold night or shelter from the sun on a hot day. They

become beds, room dividers, backpacks to carry belongings, and at times even

homes.

LWR accepts new bars of any brand of soap in their original wrapping,

however, 4-5 oz bath-size bars are highly preferred.

You can leave blankets and soap at the Welcome Center or in the LWR basket

outside the office area. Thanks so much for your generous donations!

senior citizens to share God’s love through various projects in the Watertown

community. The first 100 folks to sign-up will receive a ‘God’s work. Our hands’ t-

shirt and the next 100 will have the satisfaction and fun of working together on a

worthwhile project! Projects already planned and looking for volunteers are:

• 3 different Highway Road Ditch

clean-ups;

• Bike trail clean-up;

• Cookie baking at the church;

• Rebuilding a deck;

• Yard maintenance for shut-ins

(trim trees & bushes);

• Cutting & hauling firewood for LCOOR firepit & Joy Ranch;

afternoon of ‘service’, you are invited to gather in the Great Hall for a 5:30pm meal

and opportunity to learn from each other how you showed God’s love. Join us for

this fun afternoon as we join other ELCA congregations throughout the country

celebrating who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America – one

church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor.

the first and third Tuesday of each month at 10am. The September dates are

Tuesday, Tuesday, Tuesday, Tuesday, September 2September 2September 2September 2ndndndnd and 16161616thththth. Completed prayer shawls, infant blankets and

Prayer Shawl crafters – remember to keep track of your volunteer hours as you

work on the shawls – we will need to report to the Codington County Thrivent

Financial Chapter in November. Their gift of $500 is used to help purchase yarn

used for the prayer shawls. This ministry relies totally on special gifts and

donations to purchase the type of yarn needed.

Worship Opportunities Abound! As we head into the school year, there are several varied ways to participate in worship. Many people are needed to make worship run smoothly. From the ushers to the communion assistants to the musicians, God has given each of us talents that can be used as we worship our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Talk to Robbyn in the church office if you would like to share your talents in any of the following ways:

Praise & Rejoice ChoirPraise & Rejoice ChoirPraise & Rejoice ChoirPraise & Rejoice Choir Sing a new song unto the Lord! Under the direction of Arlene Brandt-Jenson, the choir practices Wednesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. Many friendships and wonderful harmonies have manifested from this group!

Handbell ChoirHandbell ChoirHandbell ChoirHandbell Choir The Handbell Choir is under the direction of Pat Crom and makes beautiful music together while practicing Thursday evenings at 7:45 p.m. Small groups of ringers also join together at times to provide special music for worship.

Worship TeamWorship TeamWorship TeamWorship Team Contemporary worship at 8:30 each Sunday morning is led by this dedicated group lead by Jim Miller. Keyboardists and drummers, as well as singers and guitarists are all essential parts of this group. Join this group for rehearsals at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays. We are also looking to begin a second Worship Team that will lead once a month and give our original Worship Team a well-deserved break. Let Robbyn know if you’re interested in serving with this group.

Liturgical DanceLiturgical DanceLiturgical DanceLiturgical Dance Dance has a great history of enhancing worship. Individuals age 8 and up are invited to join the Liturgical Dance Team. The Dance Team begins the year with dance at worship on Sunday, September 28th at both services. If interested in dancing with this group, contact Sara Goddard at (605) 956-0370.

Solos and Small GroupsSolos and Small GroupsSolos and Small GroupsSolos and Small Groups With four worship services each week there are many special music opportunities, as well as opportunities for keyboardists to play for worship or other groups and individuals. Whether you sing or play an instrument, like to solo or play or sing in a small group, your music is sure to enhance the worship experience. Be sure to make us aware of your interest!

Altar CommitteeAltar CommitteeAltar CommitteeAltar Committee The altar committee is responsible for setting up for communion twice each month and for light cleaning of the altar area each week. Communion is served on the first and third weekends and Wednesdays of each month at LCOOR, as well as during festival worship services. Talk to Pam Luckhurst, Janet Albers, Pam Raeder or Shelly Alvine to join in serving with this group.

Head UshersHead UshersHead UshersHead Ushers These individuals help insure that our worship services run smoothly and offer assistance to those who have volunteered through the Faith & Care program, as well as to the acolytes that serve each week. Many people are needed to fill this role. Head Usher volunteers generally serve at one service each month. Saturday Head Ushers are especially needed. See Robbyn for more info.

AcolytesAcolytesAcolytesAcolytes Acolytes are an important symbol of the liturgy. They remind us that everybody takes part in worship. Fifth and sixth graders serve as acolytes and are trained to assist in Sunday and special festival worship services.

Sound & Projection TeamSound & Projection TeamSound & Projection TeamSound & Projection Team This group of individuals is trained to run the sound and projection system at each worship service. Members of this group also serve during special events, concerts, programs and festival worship services. Team members are needed weekly for Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday worship services. Training times are customized to fit your schedule. See Robbyn or talk to any Sound & Projection Team member for details

Children’s ChurchChildren’s ChurchChildren’s ChurchChildren’s Church Volunteers are sought and assisted in preparing weekly children’s sermons. Contact Colleen Hestad, Robbyn or one of the pastors if you would like to help our youngest members experience God’s word in a way they can understand.

Special Guest Musicians Lead Music on Sunday, September 21 at 10:30

The Sunrise Trio will be leading music and worship on Sun. Sept. 21 at the 10:30 service; the trio is Pianist Kay Hoffland, Cellist Sonja Hinderlie, and Violinist Jane Schuneman. They have played together for over twenty years. Originally known as the Mount Carmel Trio, they resided in Alexandria, MN for the summer months playing for worship services, concerts, weddings, and special events until 2012. Since that time, they travel to schedule concerts in the spring, summer and fall. LCOOR members may remember Sonja Hinderlie from Nov. 16-17, 2013 when her Liturgical Dance group conducted a workshop here and led worship through dance at the Sunday services.

The Sunrise Trio states “The emphasis of our playing is to glorify God through the music. We are so thankful to be able to share the gift of music!” Don’t miss this special worship experience!

“If you don’t know what it is – is it still a bargain?” This past weekend, I bought a green wooden-handled “thing” for only $2.00 at an antique store. Before I plunked down the two bills, we debated about what it might “be.” Canning tool? Potato masher? Back scratcher? We even asked the sales clerk, but we were all stumped. Still am, actually. I had a similar opportunity last month to purchase a black-handled “utensil” for only 50 cents. On the end was a round, flat disk about 3-inches in diameter. Since not one of the grey-haired ladies at the rummage sale had the slightest idea of what it was, I let that one go. No matter what our age, we’ve seen a great deal of change during our lifetimes. Sometimes it all comes at us so quickly that we wish there was a way to put on the brakes. Setting aside a few minutes for a daily devotion can be that time. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.” – Hebrews 13:8 Isn’t it a great feeling to know that the Jesus our ancestors prayed to is the same Lord who is hearing our prayers today? During the planning for Watertown’s Celebration of the State’s 125th Anniversary, organizers decided that a time capsule should be part of the doings! So far, business cards, a cell phone, maps and newspapers have been gathered. The advertisements will certainly tell a story about the “bargains” we now enjoy in 2014. Personally, I think it would add some excitement to include something that will puzzle future generations…maybe I still have time to donate my green wooden-handled “thing?” ____________________________________________________________________________ This recipe from the LCOOR Cookbook by Deb Holter has certainly passed the test of time, and would be perfect for any morning of the week.

Oatmeal MuffinsOatmeal MuffinsOatmeal MuffinsOatmeal Muffins 1 c. oatmeal ½ c. vegetable oil 1 c. buttermilk 1 c. flour 1 egg 1 tsp. baking powder ½ c. brown sugar ½ tsp. baking soda ½ tsp. salt Mix oatmeal and buttermilk. Let it soak for one hour. Add the rest of the ingredients. Bake at 400 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes. Let cool. Makes one dozen.
