Greetings from the ALCM President

On behalf of the Board of Directors of ALCM, I

welcome you to Fort Wayne, the “City of Churches”,

for the Region 1 conference, “Let All the People Praise

You: Singing through the Generations.”

A marvelous conference awaits you! The planners

have gone above and beyond expectations in

arranging for stimulating speakers, talented

musicians, engaging workshop leaders, and

meaningful worship experiences, graciously hosted by

Trinity English Lutheran Church.

Of course, one of the greatest benefits of attending an ALCM conference is the

opportunity to meet new colleagues and share ideas. Each of us has a unique

perspective to offer. Each of us has much to share, and much to learn. Take

advantage of this time together to absorb something new: a new choir anthem,

hymn text, liturgical practice, or theological idea.

The sheer joy of singing together is another gift you will receive here. It surely is a

“foretaste of the feast to come.”

Blessings on your time together! May each of you be renewed and refreshed in the

coming days,

Anne Krentz Organ

President, Association of Lutheran Church Musicians

ALCM nurtures and equips musicians

to serve and lead the church's song.

Greetings from the ALCM Region 1 President

Welcome to Fort Wayne! The conference planning team, including your three Region 1 officers, have been hard at work for nearly two years preparing for this conference. As we gather to sing, pray, worship, learn, and share with one another, I encourage you to make the most of this time together. One of the founding goals of ALCM was to “foster professional exchange.” Events such as this are one way ALCM fulfills that goal. Be sure to talk to your colleagues. Talk about what worked, what did not, what you will take home, what you missed. In workshops and other gatherings, reflect with one another. Be sure to ask questions of the leaders and of each other. When you leave Fort Wayne, I hope you find ways to continue the professional exchange at home. Share you experiences with other colleagues near you. You might even encourage them to consider membership in ALCM if they are not already a part of this fine organization. Our board works hard to spread the word and cultivate the future of ALCM, but it is the personal invitations and relationships that need to be at the heart of our “professional exchange.” Blessings on your time here in Fort Wayne and your continued ministry at home. John Weit President, ALCM Region 1

Greetings from the Conference Chair

What a gift it is to gather as God’s people in song! Welcome to “Let All the People Praise You: Singing through the Generations,” the 2016 Region 1 Conference of ALCM. We are glad you are here! I look forward to our being renewed in workshops, worship, and musical events centered on the theme of music from across time and space sung by all generations. I also anticipate the informal yet valuable conversation at meals, exhibits and social times. These can be times to share our stories of how we have been called to our vocations and how we envision and plan for the future. Fort Wayne, the “City of Churches,” is a fitting city for celebrating the church’s song. We will experience worship, concerts, and receptions in a variety of spaces dedicated to the arts. A generous grant from The Lutheran Foundation demonstrates Fort Wayne’s commitment to the music and worship of the church. A children’s track, a first for an ALCM regional conference, affirms the invaluable presence of children in liturgy and song. The events of these days are a collaborative effort of talented and dedicated people. I thank especially the hard work of the conference planning team and the ALCM office. Please read the “Acknowledgments” and be sure to thank these committee members and many others for their work and vision. I pray God’s blessing on our time together. Children’s Track

This summer's Region 1 conference features something new and, we hope, exciting: a special track for

children ages 7-18. As conference attendees gather in plenary and workshop sessions, choristers are working

with master music educators Karol Kimmell and Joshua Pedde. More information about these clinicians can

be found on pages 24 & 25 of the conference book. Those attending will have the opportunity to worship with

their parents while contributing to our Friday evening prayer service. Participants will also enjoy drama classes

and play a variety of instruments.

The children’s track schedule is listed below, and you are welcome to stop in to observe rehearsals and other

Workshop Descriptions

A Tube, a Clapper, and You

Susan Lough

Thursday 11:00 a.m. - (Theatre – Lower Level) HANDCHIMES: They play like a handbell (sort of), remind you of a tuning fork, but sound completely

different…and you know you’ve wanted to try them out for yourself! Whether you are an experienced handbell

player or a total novice to the world of bell music, this is your chance to see what makes handchimes so special

and so much fun to play! We will cover the basic playing techniques, give you some strategies and ideas for

music you can use immediately if you want to start a beginning group, and have fun playing some music. If you

know your right hand from your left hand, and the colors pink and green, you have everything you need to

make music with handchimes.

Artistry in Anthems

Sigrid Johnson

Friday 10:45 a.m. - (Chapel – Main Level) Specific techniques that speak to the text of the anthems. Using word-stress, syllabic stress, dynamics and

tone--lift the poetry "off the page." We will explore ways to convey the text of our anthems in a way that reaches

the congregation in an optimum way. We will discuss what we want to convey and address technical ways to

achieve this. Ultimately the congregation will hear the text more easily if it is presented in a conversational way.

Be Not Afraid: Renaissance Music and the Church Choir

Zebulon Highben Friday 1:45 p.m. - (Rm 204W – Upper Level) There is a wealth of Renaissance choral music that is suitable for church choirs and appropriate for worship

use. Yet at first glance, Renaissance music can appear daunting and unachievable. This workshop will present

rationales for programming Renaissance music, as well as strategies and techniques for teaching it. Particular

attention will be given to repertoire appropriate for smaller choirs.

Beer & Hymns

Justin Rimbo

Thursday 3:30 p.m. - (Rm 204W – Upper Level) Beer & Hymns are increasingly popular events that provide people with opportunities to sing old (and new)

songs of faith in a public setting. Come learn about the theology within this particular kind of gathering, the

ministry of being hosted, and advice for starting your own (or connecting with one that already exists)! And, of

course, we'll leave time for singing. (Beer not provided.)

Designing and Presenting Hymn Festivals

John Ferguson

Friday 10:45 a.m. - (Rm 201W – Upper Level) A respected presenter of hymn festivals shares thoughts about designing and presenting hymn festivals.

Considerations include selecting themes, selecting contents, providing commentary or readings, options for

participants and more.

Page 16: “Let All the People Praise Youalcm.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/ALCMFtWayne... · 2017-09-16 · Welcome to “Let All the People Praise You: Singing through the Generations,”

15

Encouraging and Equipping Young Instrumentalists for Participation in Worship

Melvin Machemer

Friday 10:45 a.m. - (Rm 204W – Upper Level) This workshop will look at repertoire, consider the basics of working with young instrumentalists, share ideas

for organizing rehearsals within and outside the school day, and explore performance opportunities that serve

as confidence building "warm-ups" prior to participation in worship.

Exploring & Singing Hymns with Children

Karol Kimmell

Thursday 11:00 a.m. - (Music Room – Lower Level) Children love the hymnal – really! Move beyond finding the author, composer, and tune name. Learn new ways

to delve into melodies, rhythms, texts, composers, authors, phrases, visual images and more with your young

singers so they are excited to open their hymnals and SING! Descants appropriate for children will be provided.

Five Free Things You Can Do to Improve the Sound of Your Worship

Jeff Barnett

Thursday 11:00 a.m. - (Room 204W – Upper Level) It’s no secret that audio technology can be expensive, so it may come as a welcome surprise that some of the

biggest improvements you can make are absolutely free. Join church sound expert Jeff Barnett for these 5 tips

for audio excellence.

From Service to Technique

Joshua Pedde

Thursday 3:30 p.m. - (Music Room – Lower Level) As church musicians we plan according to the church year and our repertoire is based on the season rather

than on a curriculum. Come to this session where we will focus on how to take the repertoire that fits the

church year, and create a curriculum that teaches all levels of singers.

Improvisation in Hymn Playing

John Ferguson

Thursday 11:00 a.m. & Thursday 3:30 p.m. - (Nave – Main Level) Every time we play a hymn we are improvising. John Ferguson shares insights on creativity in hymn playing

and explains how he believes that every time we play a hymn at the organ we are modifying what is on the

page to better lead the singing and to reflect that we are playing something not written for organ. From there

we also will look at simple techniques to enrich our skills as "hymnprovisers."

Introducing Global Music to Congregations

Nicole Busarow, Robert Hobby, Omaldo Perez

Friday 10:45 a.m. - (Rm 203W – Upper Level) Utilizing a tag team approach, Nicole Busarow, Robert Hobby, and Omaldo Perez will offer an informal hands-

on opportunity to “sample” basic and stylistic ways to incorporate music from around the world into

congregational repertoire.

Page 17: “Let All the People Praise Youalcm.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/ALCMFtWayne... · 2017-09-16 · Welcome to “Let All the People Praise You: Singing through the Generations,”

2016 Region 1 Conference

16

Piano Possibilities: Exploring Textures and Styles for Worship

Omaldo Perez Friday 1:45 p.m. - (Music Room – Lower Level) Music is the realm of the imagination, and the piano will be our ship. In this workshop we will look at ways of

enriching our Sunday mornings by drawing from historical and contemporary performance practices, and

discuss the ways the piano can help us illuminate the text in fun and perhaps unexpected ways.

Presiding with Dignity and Grace

Paul Grime, Robert Rimbo Friday 1:45 p.m. - (Chapel – Main Level) When it comes to the rubrics (those instructions in red in our service books), we've all witnessed some practices

that might be charitably described as less than desirable. While there is no single way to preside at the table

and font, are there certain practices that are better than others? And who gets to decide? This and more will

be explored in this practical workshop, led by Robert Rimbo and Paul Grime.

Steel Drums

Mitchell Rorick

Friday 10:45 a.m. & 1:45 p.m. – (Theatre – Lower Level) Looking for a fresh and fun way to expand and enliven worship? Steel drums are versatile instruments that can

play everything from dance music to beautiful, classical melodies. This workshop will provide the basics about

steel drums, including how to play, resources for buying pans, and why steel drums are worth the investment.

By the end of this workshop you will be equipped to start your own church steel drum ensemble - or take a

job as a pannist for a cruise line!

Stewards of Mysteries: Vocation of Musicians and Pastors

Robert Rimbo

Thursday 3:30 p.m. - (Rm 201W – Upper Level) Musicians and pastors are stewards, caregivers, agents. How they work together to invite people into the

(Friday Evening Concert) Acclaimed worldwide for their virtuosity, life-affirming energy and charm, The King’s Singers are in global demand. Their work, synonymous with the very best in vocal ensemble performance, appeals to a vast international audience. Performing to hundreds of thousands of people each season, the group tours regularly to Europe, North and South America, Asia and Australasia. Instantly recognizable for their immaculate intonation, vocal blend, diction and incisive timing, The King’s Singers are consummate entertainers. The group’s repertoire has evolved to become one of the most diverse and compelling imaginable. The King’s Singers have commissioned over 200 works, including landmark pieces from leading contemporary composers including Luciano Berio, György Ligeti, Sir James MacMillan, Krzysztof Penderecki, Toru Takemitsu, Sir John Tavener, Gabriela Lena Frank and Eric Whitacre. They have also commissioned arrangements of everything from jazz standards to pop chart hits, explored medieval motets and Renaissance madrigals, and encouraged young composers to write new scores.

In addition to performing to capacity audiences and creating highly regarded and much-loved recordings, The King’s Singers share their artistry through numerous workshops and masterclasses around the world. The group hosts a biennial residential Summer School at Royal Holloway (part of the University of London) where they are also Ensemble in Residence. Among the work supported by The King’s Singers Foundation, A Carol for Christmas is a composition competition that seeks to encourage young and up-coming composers, giving the winners the chance for their piece to be performed in King’s College Chapel (Cambridge, UK). Double Grammy® award-winning artists,

the group were honored in 2009 for their Signum Classics release, Simple Gifts, and again in 2012 for their contribution to Eric Whitacre’s Light and Gold album on Universal/Decca. Recently voted into Gramophone Hall of Fame, rave reviews and repeated sell-out concerts confirm that The King’s Singers remain one of the world’s finest vocal ensembles.
